USA government trying to delay Israeli ground incursion into Gaza

When the USA government, as currently led by Democrats, is the one doing this, something is terribly wrong:

The US government has pressed Israel to delay its imminent ground offensive in the Gaza Strip to allow for the release of more Hamas hostages and aid into Gaza, CNN reported on Sunday, citing two sources briefed on the discussions.

“The [administration] pressed Israeli leadership to delay because of progress on the hostage front” and the need to get trucks of aid into Gaza, one person familiar with the discussions said.

The National Security Council did not immediately respond for comment.

When US President Joe Biden was asked Saturday if he was encouraging Israel to delay the invasion, he responded: "I'm talking to the Israelis."

In the meantime, the President on Sunday took to social media in an attempt to cool off Israel's battle plans. "Israel has the right to defend itself. We must make sure they have what they need to protect their people today and always," Biden wrote on X.

"At the same time, Prime Minister Netanyahu and I have discussed how Israel must operate by the laws of war. That means protecting civilians in combat as best as they can," he added.

The President continued, "We can’t ignore the humanity of innocent Palestinians who only want to live in peace. That’s why I secured an agreement for the first shipment of humanitarian assistance for Palestinian civilians in Gaza. And we cannot give up on a two-state solution."

The persistence in talking about 2-state solutions is another serious problem that can't be approved of. And nobody should underestimate that Biden and company are doing everything they can to sabotage the war and rescue efforts. The Israeli government must not let this be the case.

Giving Gazans work permits within Israeli parameters enabled them to plan the massacre

One of the reasons the Hamas was able to conduct such a horrific attack on October 7 was because of the work permits Israel made the grave mistake of providing:

Among the litter of guns, korans, and maps discarded by the Hamas terrorists whose bodies lie alongside bullet-riddled vehicles and dusty roads are green Gaza IDs with work permits. Normally residents of the Hamas territory can’t enter Israel, but work permits allowed over 20,000 Gazans to enter Israel. When some returned, it was as Hamas rapists and killers.

The Hamas invasion succeeded so well because the terrorists had an intimate knowledge of the communities they were targeting because they had worked there or had intelligence from those who had worked there. The attackers had detailed maps and building layouts. One woman whose husband and son were murdered said that the Hamas terrorists knew the names of the people, how many children they had and even which of them owned dogs.

Last year, Secretary of State Blinken addressed a J Street even and told the anti-Israel lobby that the Biden administration had pushed Israel to “improve the lives of Palestinians” by, among other things, “issuing thousands of work permits for Palestinians in Gaza”.

The number of exits from Gaza into Israel rose sharply under the Biden administration and the left-wing Bennett-Lapid government which handed out an unprecedented number of work permits.

In 2021, there had been a total of only 7,500 exits a month from Gaza, but by July 2022, there had been 35,370 exits.

The massive increase was due to the work permits that the Biden administration had sought and that Bennett, Lapid and Gantz had willingly provided. Prime Minister Naftali Bennett made the decision to increase the number of work permits from 5,000 to 15,000. Defense Minister Benny Gantz assessed the security situation and approved the move which embedded Hamas terrorists into Israel. By late 2022, the number had expanded to 17,000.

While Lapid and Gantz, along with Biden and Blinken, obviously have to shoulder much guilt, even Bennett - and Ayelet Shaked - have to shoulder much blame for enabling this, by pulling a coup d'etat, all because they didn't like Netanyahu, and come to think of it, they clearly didn't like Donald Trump either. Now, untold damage has occurred by enabling terrorist moles to gather information for planning the massacre that could've been avoided if they really cared about safety. Now, it's crystal clear they don't. And, lest we forget, even Israeli employers must be utterly ashamed of themselves for employing these monsters to begin with.

In another related subject, an insurrection led by pro-Hamas demonstrators took place at Capitol Hill, and unlike the pro-Trump protestors on January 6, 2021, nobody's calling these criminals for what they are:

About one hundred pro-Palestinian insurrectionists occupied a federal House office building in Washington, DC, on Wednesday, chanting “ceasefire now” and “let Gaza live.”

The insurrectionists, many who wore face masks and dressed in black and flew a banner demanding that Israel stop defending itself from rocket attacks against civilians, occupied the ground floor of the Cannon Office Building, one of three main buildings where congressional staff and lawmakers work.

Rep. Rashida Tlaib was leading the protest:

No shock at all. And the Democrats will continue to be okay with this, and do nothing to expel her from their repulsive ranks.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) was on the scene and noted a double standard between the pro-Palestinian insurrectionists and the protestors on January 6. “There’s an insurrection happening now on Capitol Hill,” her video caption read of the event. “They are claiming they want peace but they want money to go to terrorists.”

Some news reports noted that the far-left Jewish Voice for Peace was involved. No shock that self-haters would participate either. What next, will Neturei Karta turn up? And what are the chances that nobody who took part in this left-wing insurrection will ever be prosecuted?

Congress ousts Ilhan Omar from foreign affairs committee

It's good to see the GOP's done something right here, banishing antisemitic Omar from a committee she doesn't belong on, any more than the rest of the modern Democrats:

The House voted Thursday along party lines to remove Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) from her seat on the Foreign Affairs Committee through a resolution that cites her past derogatory remarks about Jewish people and anti-Israel posture.

The vote passed 218 to 211, with all Democrats voting against the resolution and one Republican, Rep. David Joyce (R-OH), voting “present.”

If Joyce didn't support the resolution, it demonstrates how the GOP still has problems of its own with bad apples.

The vote is a win for House Republicans, who hold a slim majority in the chamber, after a few from their conference initially objected to the resolution. The three who had vocally opposed it, Reps. Victoria Spartz (R-IN), Nancy Mace (R-SC), and Ken Buck (R-CO), had flipped their vote by Thursday morning.

Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN), a key player in the successful whip operation, told Breitbart News in an exclusive statement that Omar, a fellow Minnesotan, had “no place representing American interests” on the Foreign Affairs Committee.

“There is no debate that Ilhan Omar, the face of antisemitism in the Democrat Party, has no place representing American interests on the Foreign Affairs Committee. Ms. Omar is an embarrassment to Minnesota and our country,” Emmer said.

[...] Republicans’ opposition to Omar serving on the committee comes after the two-term Minnesota Democrat gained a reputation for promoting antisemitic tropes, such as claiming Israel had “hypnotized the world” and that support for Israel was “all about the Benjamins.”

Omar later apologized for the remarks but continued to take anti-Israel positions.

In 2019, Omar introduced a resolution that supported the anti-Israel “boycott, divestment, sanctions” (BDS) movement. In 2021, she lumped “atrocities” supposedly committed by the U.S. and Israel in with those committed by the Taliban and Hamas. Equating the U.S. and its Middle East ally to the two terrorist groups led to condemnation from her own party’s leadership and again resulted in Omar apologizing. Later in 2021, Omar was one of just nine members of the House to vote against a $1 billion investment in Israel’s defense system.

The harm she caused on her part is considerable. And her "apologies" were entirely false, seeing how she continued with the same behavior long after. Sadly, she could still be reelected to Congress in the next election, and that's why efforts are still needed to make sure people like her aren't allowed to continue working in Congress.

SARKOZY: OBAMA'S AN EMPTY SUIT ON FOREIGN POLICY

French president Nicholas Sarkozy has summed up the problems with Barack Obama's foreign policy positions (Hat tip: Hot Air):

French President Nicolas Sarkozy is very critical of U.S. presidential candidate Barack Obama’s positions on Iran, according to reports that have reached Israel’s government.

Sarkozy has made his criticisms only in closed forums in France. But according to a senior Israeli government source, the reports reaching Israel indicate that Sarkozy views the Democratic candidate’s stance on Iran as “utterly immature” and comprised of “formulations empty of all content.”

Obama visited Paris in July, and the Iranian issue was at the heart of his meeting with Sarkozy. At a joint press conference afterward, Obama urged Iran to accept the West’s proposal on its nuclear program, saying that Iran was creating a serious situation that endangered both Israel and the West. According to the reports reaching Israel, Sarkozy told Obama at that meeting that if the new American president elected in November changed his country’s policy toward Iran, that would be “very problematic.”

Wow. Now that's saying something. Indeed it would be a problem, since no way is Iran going to cease their nuclear warfare building by just asking them.

On France24 Television news, they tried to make it sound as though Europe prefers Obama. This should prove otherwise, and it's also a very good warning of some of the things that could go wrong under an Obama-led government.

Victoria Wulsin's pitch for more Arab Oil and Socialism

In Ohio, Democrat Victoria Wulsin has been trying to unseat Rep. Jean Schmidt since, oh, around the time of the French Revolution.

Her fruitless, pathetic campaigns involve lots of dollars (generously provided by hard-left causes) wasted on egregiously fabricated campaign ads. The latest ad buy, which PolitickerOH reports is saturating Ohio airwaves, positions a 2003 vote by Jean Schmidt as having the potential of raising gas taxes

Wulsin, of course, is a handmaiden of Nancy "No-Drill" Pelosi with a pathetic record on regressive, Marxist policies that would benefit foreign oil.

"Vic Wulsin is an astonishing hypocrite... She attacks Jean Schmidt for voting for Ohio's budget almost seven years ago while hoping people forget Vic proposed a significant tax increase less than two years ago."

The reference is to a television interview Wulsin did in 2006 on WLWT during which she said, "One more thing about gas prices... I believe we need some sort of progressive tax on gas prices. The way they work now, again the working class, the middle class, pays more than their fair share than the very wealthy. And I believe that we as a country, believe in equality for all, and that means that we who benefit from our society need to contribute."

...two years ago Wulsin proposed "a ludicrous gas tax idea that would have seriously hurt middle-class families." Pfaff called Wulsin a "protégé of Speaker Nancy Pelosi who has thwarted every attempt to make America energy independent."

And who has advocated "economic fairness", the hard left code-phrase for socialism.

In 2002 Saddam Hussein's intelligence organization wrote a letter to Al Qaeda chieftain Ayman al-Zawahiri requesting a meeting regarding the launch of terrorist operations. The invaluable MEMRI translation service reports

The Kurdish daily Kurdistani Nwe has published a 2002 letter from the Iraqi presidency that it says proves that there was cooperation between the regime of Saddam Hussein and Al-Qaeda.

The letter, which appeared on the paper's front page, was published by the intelligence apparatus of the Iraqi presidency and discussed an intention to meet with Ayman Al-Zawahiri in order to examine a plan drawn up by the Iraqi presidency to carry out a "revenge operation" in Saudi Arabia.

The lies about Iraq promoted by the hard left bank of American politics continue to unravel.

Put bluntly, there were proven ties between Hussein's Iraq and Al-Qaeda.

And even the left-leaning mainstream media is reporting that the longstanding 'Bush lied' theme was as phony as the bogus Obama presidential seal.

Democrats Rosalynn Carter, Walter Mondale, and Gerry Brown made campaign visits to the Peoples Temple’s “comrade leader.” The mayor of San Francisco even rewarded Jones for his activism by appointing him chairman of the city’s housing commission. “The temple was as much a left-wing political crusade as a church,” The Nation reported in 1978. Unfortunately, as the years progressed, more Americans gulped down the Left’s Kool-Aid that Jones was of the religious Right and not an atheist leftist.

A year before Hitler came to power in Germany, Margaret Sanger called for a vast system of concentration camps for the United States. The Planned Parenthood founder demanded “a stern and rigid policy of segregation or sterilization” for “dysgenic” Americans who “would be taught to work under competent instructors for the period of their entire lives.” The 1932 speech concluded that “fifteen or twenty millions of our population would then be organized into soldiers of defense—defending the unborn against their own disabilities.”

American intellectuals looked upon the hell on earth that was post-revolutionary Russia and saw a heaven on earth. The New Republic credited the Russian Revolution with providing “the most democratic franchise yet devised in our world,” while The Nation found that “the franchise is more democratic in Russia than in England or in the United States.” Lincoln Steffens marveled after a visit to the Soviet Union, “The revolution in Russia is to establish the Kingdom of Heaven here on earth...”

1. Nazi-Soviet Pact

The Left switched from pacifists to warmongers overnight once the Nazi attack upon the Communists dissolved the Hitler-Stalin Pact. Communist Party USA chief Earl Browder, who had dubbed WWII “the second imperialist war” during the pact, so thoroughly switched course when the Nazis attacked the Communists that he embraced conscription (after his opposition to it led to jail in WWI), endorsed a ‘no-strike’ pledge for labor unions (after encouraging strikes to impede the war effort), and kicked out Japanese Americans from the CP (after ostensibly championing civil rights). The Hollywood Anti-Nazi League ceased operations during the pact. The Communists’ New Masses panned the anti-Nazi Watch on the Rhine when it appeared as a play during the pact only to praise it when it appeared as a movie when Hitler and Stalin were again enemies.

Obama: Israel a "constant sore" that "infects... foreign policy"

Interviewed in The Atlantic, Barack Obama tells us that Israel is a "constant wound... a constant sore..." and an infection. Gateway Pundit caught Obama's latest inflammatory remarks.

Jeff Goldberg:--- Do you think that Israel is a drag on America’s reputation overseas?

Barack Obama:--- No, no, no. But what I think is that this constant wound, that this constant sore, does infect all of our foreign policy. The lack of a resolution to this problem provides an excuse for anti-American militant jihadists to engage in inexcusable actions, and so we have a national-security interest in solving this, and I also believe that Israel has a security interest in solving this because I believe that the status quo is unsustainable. I am absolutely convinced of that, and some of the tensions that might arise between me and some of the more hawkish elements in the Jewish community in the United States might stem from the fact that I’m not going to blindly adhere to whatever the most hawkish position is just because that’s the safest ground politically.

Obama's remarks seem to parallel those of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

In yet another verbal attack against Israel, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad called the Jewish state a "filthy bacteria" whose sole purpose was to oppress the other nations of the region.

"The world powers established this filthy bacteria, the Zionist regime, which is lashing out at the nations in the region like a wild beast," the Iranian president told supporters at a rally in southern Iran.

Come to think of it, a Mr. A. Hitler had some remarks along these lines.

Against the infection of materialism, against the Jewish pestilence we must hold aloft a flaming ideal. And if others speak of the World and Humanity we say the Fatherland - and only the Fatherland!

Great Moments in Carter History #73: Meeting Dr. Mengele

Many criticized Carter's decision to meet with Dr. Josef Mengele in 1943. Carter, however, defended his actions. "I think it is absolutely crucial that in the final and dreamed-about and prayed-for peace agreement for Europe that the Gestapo be involved and that the SS will be involved," Carter told a Zyklon-B conference outside Auschwitz.

Carter aims to get Mengele to agree to a "peaceful resolution of differences, both with the Jews and also with Catholics, Gypsies and Gays."

The Left's Litany of Lies

You know what's startling? The fact that liberals (er, I mean, progressives) have blithely ignored a tidal wave of lies promoted by their ostensible leaders. And I don't mean routine buffoonery like Hillary's tale of Bosnian snipers disguised as child greeters or her mother's encounter with Sir Edmund Hillary in The Time Tunnel.

Instead, I refer to the Democrats' tectonic lies. Lies so foundational, so interwoven into Democrat lore that they can no more be removed from the party than its symbol (the ass, donkey, whatever) can be replaced with a platypus.

Some of the most outrageous lies marketed by the left include the following:

LIE #1: There is no terrorist threat. There is... No... Terrorist... Threat.... I repeat: There is no terrorist threat. None.

On April 2, 2008, the Department of Homeland Security issued the following statement: "Nuclear terrorism remains a threat." But perhaps the DHS is populated with partisan liars? Oh, wait, a report from the Congressional Research Service, a bipartisan team of scientists and researchers, opens with the following statement:

It would be difficult for terrorists to mount a nuclear attack on a U.S. city, but such an attack is plausible and would have catastrophic consequences, in one scenario killing over a half-million people and causing damage of over $1 trillion...

In combating nuclear terrorism, the standard for success for the United States is daunting — zero nuclear detonations, which may require stopping every terrorist or rogue state attempt to acquire and deliver a nuclear weapon — while a single nuclear detonation in the United States would constitute a terrorist success... ...studies have shown many potential weaknesses in U.S. ability to thwart nuclear terrorism.

Furthermore, there have been numerous documented attempts at nuclear terrorism in the past. And more appear to be on the way, with the Atlantic's William Langewiesche stating "the spread of atomic weapons can't be stopped."

The assertion that "there is no terrorist threat" is as baldfaced a lie as has ever been marketed to the American people even disregarding the stunning national security ramifications.

LIE #2: Iraq is a distraction from the War on Terror. This fabrication, unceasingly marketed across the entire swath of spectrum controlled by the mainstream and leftist new media, is as patently false as the assertion that Michael Moore is a celebrity endorser for Subway.

The website Hussein and Terror (authored by Deroy Murdock) is an excellent starting point for understanding Iraq's role as the central clearinghouse of terror. Abu Abbas, Abu Nidal, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, Ansar al-Islam and Salman Pak are central to that level of understanding; those who can't define these terms believe this lie and those who know the terms comprehend why this is such an egregious lie.

Other facets to consider include A.Q. Kahn's offer of nuclear weapon design to Iraq and Kenneth Timmerman's analysis of recently released Pentagon documents:

“Despite their incompatible long-term goals, many terrorist movements and Saddam found a common enemy in the United States,” the report’s authors at the Institute for Defense Analysis (IDA) state... ...a Jan. 18, 1993 order from Saddam Hussein, transmitted to the head of Iraqi intelligence, “to hunt the Americans that are in Arab lands, especially in Somalia, by using Arab elements or Asian (Muslims) or friends.” ...In response, the head of the Iraqi Intelligence Service informed Hussein that Iraq already had ties with a large number of international terrorist groups, including “the Islamist Arab elements that were fighting in Afghanistan and [currently] have no place to base and are physically present in Somalia, Sudan, and Egypt.” In other words, al-Qaida.

Put simply, Hussein's Iraq was linked to a myriad of terrorist groups including Al Qaeda and its affiliates. Putting Hussein down was a blessing not only for the Iraqi people but also for the citizens of the West who would have suffered as victims of terror attacks sponsored by Saddam.

LIE #3: The Ripple Effect: not so much a single lie as an entire genus of lies in which falsehoods spread from left-wing anthills to the mainstream media.

A perfect example is represented by a recent (March, 2008) incident involving CNN's Glenn Beck. In an interview with pastor John Hagee, Beck noted that certain crackpots had emailed him with rumors that Barack Obama was the "Anti-Christ."

Within hours, the odious (and failing) Media Matters website posted an "alert" that claimed Beck had seriously considered that Obama is the Anti-Christ. As you might expect, this alert was effectively read right off a teleprompter by an unhinged crackpot (and MSNBC "journalist") named Keith Olbermann. At which point, the New York Times picked up the story.

The whispering campaigns allege that Mr. Obama is a secret Muslim planning to impose Islamic law on the country. Incredibly, he is even accused — in earnest! — of being the Antichrist... Glenn Beck of CNN asked the Rev. John Hagee, a conservative evangelical, what the odds are that Mr. Obama is the Antichrist.

In other words, the Ripple Effect -- a series of increasingly shrill falsehoods -- spread from an inconsequential progagandist website to the New York Times (but I repeat myself).

On CNN, Beck predicted the outcry before it even occurred and also described a series of similar events that can all be categorized as outright lies.

LIE #4: the assertions of Obama's church - I need not rehash the all of the lies of Pastor Wright and his friend Louis Farrakhan.

The highlights: the U.S. government invented HIV as a means of genocide against people of color; that racist Louis ("The Jews helped Hitler get the Third Reich on the road") Farrakhan "epitomizes greatness"; and reprinting (in a church newsletter, no less) the lies of a murderous posse of terrorist thugs known as Hamas.

The church, now under greater scrutiny due to Obama's 20-year relationship with it, has done its best to airbrush its website, removing damaging newsletters and statements. Furthermore, references to Wright on Obama's website have been purged.

Both are moves reminiscent of the "bad old days of the Soviet Union."

Al Qaeda Recruiter Blues

March 23, 2008: The sharp drop in suicide bombings in Iraq is partly due to the decline in foreign al Qaeda volunteers coming into Iraq.

The recruiting, mostly in Saudi Arabia and North Africa, preys on the unique social conditions in those areas. Namely, high birth rates and high unemployment. This produces a lot of younger sons who are unemployed, unmarried and face a dim future.

So the al Qaeda recruiter, often working out of a local mosque, makes a free trip to Iraq, ending in a glorious death for the cause, sound like a solution. But over the last year, the number of such volunteers has declined from 120 a month, to about 40.

The main reason for this is bad news, and some survivors, coming back from Iraq. Not many of these losers make it back, but the word gets on to the Internet, and this has caused quite a commotion on pro-terrorist web sites and message boards.

There's also been a sharp drop in pro-terrorist combat videos coming out of Iraq. This is largely due to the death or capture of the people responsible for getting those videos onto the Internet.

• SOMEONE TELL THEM ALL TO STFU.

WHAT IS IT ABOUT THE DEMS THAT MAKES THEM WANT TO HAVE "DO-OVERS" ALL THE TIME!?

The Dems mostly voted FOR the Iraq War in 2002.

But when it got tough in 2004 and went sour in 2005-7 they all said they were really against it. It was BUSH'S WAR.

And some of their leading stars said they'd wished they voted against it and/or were hoodwinked by Bush.

BOTTOM-LINE: they wanted a do-over.

(Now, that we're winning again, they ignore it altogether!)

But there is a pattern here:

They wanted a DO-OVER in Florida in 2000.

They wanted a DO-OVER in Ohio in 2004.

Now, many of them want a do-over in Michigan and Florida.

I think the Dems are like this because they are fundamentally like CHILDREN - most postmodern leftists are.

When they lose they want to re-write the rules to suit them. And they claim they are entitled because as losers... they're victims.

Victimized by Bush or Diebold, or arcane party rules, blah-blah-blah.

You now what all this really is a symptom of? Democrat childishness.

Some say that the GOP is the daddy party and the Dems the mommy party.

I think that's no longer operative.

I think the GOP is the ADULT party and the Democrat Party is for adolescents, at best. (Many of them are teens who are still in diapers - figuratively speaking!)

There are no "do-overs" in real life. When things get tough, adults bear down and get tougher.

2008 will pit an adult - McCain - against one of two children: Hillary or Obama. Each of whom wants the federal government to play nanny.

If you think you can take care of yourself, mostly, and if you want the government run by people who believe most people can and should, then you must vote GOP and McCain.

Either that or vote Democrat and demand your pacifier. And a do-over whenever things get tough.

ANOTHER MASS GRAVE FOUND IN IRAQ - PROBABLY ONE OF SADDAM'S

BBC:

Security forces in Iraq have found a mass grave containing about 100 decomposed bodies.

The grave, discovered in Khalis, north of the capital, Baghdad, is one of the largest such finds in several months.

...A US military spokesman said the bodies were mainly skeletal, indicating they may have been there a long time.

Iraqi army officer Major General Abdel Karim al-Rubaie added that the victims were beyond recognition.

"We can't identify them," he told AFP news agency. "There are just bones in there. At the moment we have left the remains in the grave itself."

Khalis Human rights groups believe there are many such mass graves in Iraq where thousands of people killed during the regime of deposed president Saddam Hussein were buried.

Since the Saddam Hussein regime was overthrown in May, 270 mass graves have been reported.

By mid-January, 2004, the number of confirmed sites climbed to fifty-three. Some graves hold a few dozen bodies—their arms lashed together and the bullet holes in the backs of skulls testimony to their execution. Other graves go on for hundreds of meters, densely packed with thousands of bodies.

"We've already discovered just so far the remains of 400,000 people in mass graves," said British Prime Minister Tony Blair on November 20 in London.

The United Nations, the U.S. State Department, Amnesty International, and Human Rights Watch (HRW) all estimate that Saddam Hussein's regime murdered hundreds of thousands of innocent people.

"Human Rights Watch estimates that as many as 290,000 Iraqis have been 'disappeared' by the Iraqi government over the past two decades," said the group in a statement in May. "Many of these 'disappeared' are those whose remains are now being unearthed in mass graves all over Iraq."

If these numbers prove accurate, they represent a crime against humanity surpassed only by the Rwandan genocide of 1994, Pol Pot's Cambodian killing fields in the 1970s, and the Nazi Holocaust of World War II.

YET THE OBAMESSIAH AND HILLARY AND DEMS SAY WE SHOULD HAVE LEFT HIM ALONE.... SHEESH

Two Winnable Wars

No one can return from the battlefields in Iraq and Afghanistan, as I recently did, without believing that these are wars that can still be won.

They are also clearly wars that can still be lost, but visits to the battlefield show that these conflicts are very different from the wars being described in American political campaigns and most of the debates outside the United States.

... The military situations in Iraq and Afghanistan are very different. The United States and its allies are winning virtually every tactical clash in both countries.

In Iraq, however, al-Qaeda is clearly losing in every province. It is being reduced to a losing struggle for control of Nineveh and Mosul. There is a very real prospect of coalition forces bringing a reasonable degree of security if decisions such as Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr's announcement Friday to extend his militia's cease-fire six months continue over a period of years.

Military victory is far more marginal in Afghanistan.

NATO and international troops can still win tactically, but the Taliban is sharply expanding its support areas as well as its political and economic influence and control in Afghanistan. It has scored major gains in Pakistan, which is clearly the more important prize for al-Qaeda and has more Pashtuns than Afghanistan. U.S. commanders privately warn that victory cannot be attained without more troops, without all members of NATO and the International Security Assistance Force fully committing their troops to combat, and without a much stronger and consistent effort by the Pakistani army in both the federally administered tribal areas in western Pakistan and the Baluchi area in the south.

  A bomb evidently meant to destroy a U.S. Embassy car exploded as the vehicle passed by Tuesday, narrowly missing the car but wounding its Lebanese driver and a fellow passenger and killing at least three civilians traveling in the car behind, according to local reports, aid workers at the scene and State Department officials in Washington.
  
  The bomb exploded on a coastal road just north of Beirut in an industrial district called Bourj Hammond. There was no immediate claim of responsibility.
  
  Other reports and aid workers said that at least 20 other people had been wounded, including bystanders and people working in nearby shops and offices. At the scene, glass littered the road and the police had sealed off the area. Two cars were badly damaged in the attack, but the American car - a large, four-wheel-drive armored vehicle - sustained much less damage.
  
  Initial reports suggested that the bomb had been placed under a car on the side of the road but this could not immediately be confirmed.
  
  In Washington, the State Department spokesman, Sean McCormack, said that two embassy employees, including the driver, had been in the vehicle damaged in the blast. The driver was slightly wounded and the other staff member was fine, McCormack said. He said no American diplomats or U.S. citizens had been in the car.
