The issue has become ethically and politically volatile because extracting the cells entails destruction of an embryo.

Mr Bush appeared yesterday with 18 families who had "adopted" frozen embryos discarded by other couples but subsequently used to have children.

Embryo adoption is the solution - for pregnant women who don't want to go to term. Instead of aborting, they should give up their embryo for future adoption.

It's a WIN-WIN-WIN: the pregnant woman gets to terminate her pregnancy; the embryo gets a chance to live and breath and dream; and loving parents - who would otherwise not be able to have a pregnancy or a child - get to have a pregnancy and a baby!

Each side in the abortion debate - instead of financing political brawls - should finance medical research to make this a reality, and charities to make it a viable alternative for all women who have unwanted pregnancies.

We could shut down EVERY ABORTION CLINIC, and re-open them as embryo extraction, freezing and adoption centers.

And that's why Olmert - like Bush - has consigned deterrence (at least as it relates to the GWOT) to the dustbin of histry, where it belongs.

The goals which Olmert has set out for this campaign are concrete and attainable, and not abstract - like "deterrence."

The Olmert Doctrine has HUGE implications for Iran. Just as Israel cannot accept Hamas as the government of the so-called Palestinian Arabs, and cannot accept Hizb'Allah, (armed with missiles and rockets) controlling its border with Lebanon - Israel cannot - and will not - accept Iran armed with Nukes.

Israel is now paying the price for having allowed the jihadomaniacs on their Lebanese border to spend the last 6 years arming themselves to the teeth. They will not allow a repeat. Not in Lebanon. Not in Gaza. And not in Iran.

The Olmert Doctrine is simple: Israel will attack and destroy the enemy's capacity to make existentially threatening attacks. It's very much like the Bush Doctrine - as it should be: we are fighting the same enemy. Using the same strategy makes perfect sense.

IAF fighter jets dropped over 20 tons in bombs late Wednesday night on a Hizbullah bunker, possibly the hiding place of the group's leader Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah, in the Burj al-Arjana refugee camp in southeast Beirut. It was still unclear who was in the bunker at the time and what their fate was, but IDF sources said the bunker was totally destroyed and that all that was left was a crater.

The IDF obtained intelligence information late Wednesday night that Hizbullah leaders possibly including Nasrallah had taken refuge inside the bunker. A wave of aircraft immediately took to the air and dropped 23 tons of explosives on the bunker.

IDF sources would not confirm that Nasrallah was in the bunker at the time, but said that high-ranking Hizbullah leaders were inside, and that it appeared that the attack was successful.

IF THEY DIDN'T GET HIM WITH 23 TONS, THEN THEY WILL TRY AGAIN WITH 50.

Israel intensified its bombing across Lebanon on Monday, hitting an army barracks in Tripoli and bases in Baalbek, both in the north. It shelled fuel tanks in Beirut’s port and continued pounding southern Lebanon and Beirut’s southern suburbs. In the afternoon, Israel made a brief ground raid into Lebanon.

Israeli military officials said they succeeded in hitting a rocket launcher in Beirut carrying one of Hezbollah’s longest-range rockets, an Iranian Zelzal, with a range of 62 to 124 miles. Exactly as I analyzed and predicted on Friday July 14: (1) how long it would last; (2) how the pace would quicken, and (3) the exact limited military and political goals.

It will take one more week to destroy 90% of the remaining missiles and rockets and launchers and kill the teams trained in their use. And the leadership of Hizb'allah will either be dead or in exile a week after this occurs.

UK scientists have traced the history of wildfires by studying lumps of ancient charcoal from around the world. The fossils show the incidence of fires through time is closely related to the level of atmospheric oxygen.

Andrew Scott and Ian Glasspool say huge swathes of the planet were ablaze when concentrations of the gas peaked some 275 million years ago. Their research is published in the US scientific journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. "People might think the charcoal they pull out of a bonfire is just rubbish; but look at it under a microscope and you see that it has beautiful anatomical preservation," said geologist Professor Scott, from Royal Holloway, University of London.

"In other words, the charcoal retains information not just about the fire but about the type of plants that were being burned. This means we can tell whether the fires moved through surface plants or big trees," he told BBC News.

Oxygen feeder

Charcoal is almost pure carbon and is left virtually unchanged in the fossilisation process. Scott and Glasspool, who is affiliated to Chicago's Field Museum, examined charcoal residues preserved from about 440 to roughly 250 million years ago.

Charcoal and plant debris (Royal Holloway, University of London) It covers the period when scientists believe plants first got a strong foothold on land and spread rapidly across the surface. The charcoal samples studied came from all around the world, including the US, Australia, Scotland, India, Norway, South Africa and Antarctica.

The researchers examined the material to ascertain the types of fires that produced the charcoal and their likely incidence. They then compared this with models other scientists have produced to describe how oxygen in Earth's atmosphere is thought to have changed over time.

There appears to be a strong link.

The team found that fires were rare and localised for the first 50 million years of plant evolution but then they increased in frequency as the levels of oxygen in the atmosphere rose. From around 365 million years ago, severe fires became widespread across the planet. Oxygen levels peaked at 30% 275 million years ago, in comparison with only 21% today. In this period even damp vegetation would have ignited easily causing many more fires.

"From the Late Devonian - from about 365 million years ago - there was a rapid increase in fire," Professor Scott explained.

"One might have expected that to occur earlier but it seems to have coincided with this rapid rise in atmospheric oxygen that people have modelled. So, this is the first time anyone has used the charcoal record to constrain the atmospheric oxygen models."

PREDICTION: WAR ENDS IN 2 WEEKS WITH ISRAEL LIBERATING SOUTHERN LEBANON

Hezbollah has between 10,000 and 12,000 rockets of varying ranges and types, [IDF] General Nehushtan said, most of them provided by Syria and Iran.

If Hizb'allah uses about 300 a day and loses about 300 a day (to IDF strikes on weapons depots) - and since they cannot now be resupplied - then that means that Hizb'allah will run out of rockets and missiles in about 20 days AT THE CURRENT PACE. I feel that the pace of the IDF's counter-attacks will quicken, accelerating the destruction of these weapons, and that the IDF will force the leadership of Hizb'allah to flee to Syria and Iran - in two weeks, effectively ending their reign of terror over southern Lebanon, effectively LIBERATING SOUTHERN LEBANON FROM SYRIA AND IRAN.

This will effectively mean that UNSCR#1559 will have been enforced by Israel - a GREAT and LONG OVERDUE event:

Hours earlier, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert told UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan that Israel would not end its military operation in Lebanon until the implementation of Security Council Resolution 1559, which calls for disarming Hezbollah and the deployment of the Lebanese army in southern Lebanon.

This victory by Israel will be enjoyed by most of the Arab nations in the region - all except Syria and Yemen.

The Saudi official said Hizbullah's actions could lead to "an extremely serious situation which could subject all Arab nations and its achievements to destruction."

"The kingdom sees that it is time for those elements to alone shoulder the full responsibility for this irresponsible behavior and that the burden of ending the crisis falls on them alone."

Jordan helped us get Zarqawi. Mubarak tried to get the hostage released and couldn't and blamed Syria. Now, Saudi Arabia - which has probably killed as many al Qaeda as anyone, in the last year - is OPENLY criticizing Hizb'allah, (who are after all Shias).

Taken together it PROVES that Syria and Iran and their jihado-stooges Hamas and Hizb'allah, are becoming INCREASINGLY ISOLATED, and it means that Israel's victory - in the comings DAYS - will also be a huge REGION-WIDE VICTORY.

These Arab nations mow see that they - like Israel - are threatened by the jihadomaniacs, and by Syria and Iran.

I now expect Jordan and Saudi Arabia to allow Israel to use their airspace to mount a counter-attack against Iran for ANY attack by Iran on Israel - a REAL, NEAR-TERM possibility.

JUST AS I PREDICTED YESTERDAY: HIZB'ALLAH ATTACKS HAIFA

Two rockets have struck the Israeli city of Haifa, hours after a threat by the militant Lebanese group Hezbollah. ... Israeli police said two rockets had fallen on a Christian area of Haifa called Stella Maris. The Israeli ambassador in Washington, Danny Ayalon, described the Haifa incident as a "major escalation" of the crisis. He said the international community should make it clear to Iran and Syria - who both have links with Hezbollah - that they were "playing with fire".

IMHO: IRAN WANTS TO PROVOKE THE IDF INTO ATTACKING SYRIA SO THAT THEY HAVE AN EXCUSE TO LAUNCH A MASSIVE MISSILE ATTACK ON ISRAEL, SPECIFICLLY TEL AVIV AND HAIFA; (IRAN AND SYRIA RECENTLY SIGNED A MUTUAL DEFENSE PACT). THIS ATTACK WOULD BE COORDINATED WITH SYRIA, HAMAS AND HIZB'ALLAH AND COINCIDE WITH AN ATTEMPT TO TAKE JERUSALEM.

I intuit this based on my feeling that a prisoner exchange is VERY small stuff and therefore cannot explain the massive risk/exposure to counter-attack which the kidnappings were SURE to provoke. Iran is looking for an excuse, something to make their long dreamed for attack on Israel seem provoked. (The Captain has similar thoughts.)

More and more I feel that Iran's bold intransigence means that it already has a nuke - even if it was not of their own manufacture; (for all intents and pourposes we shouold assume they do). Perhaps they bought some from Kim Jong Il? Who knows.

I think, therefore, that -- (until Iran has regime change, or until their missile capability is neutrlized - perhaps by deployment by Israel of a NMD in addition to their Patriot their Arrow systems) -- Israel must contain their counter-attacks to known Hizb'allah and Hamas property and persons within south Lebanon and Gaza. AND WIPE THEM OUT. Utterly. And assassinate all jihadoterrorists it has the opportunity to assassinate. With extreme prejudice and all due haste. I hope this is what Peretz is intimating (via LGF).

I FIRST PREDICTED THIS ON SEPTEMBER 25 OF 2005:

this is either the opening round of the next BIG ARAB-ISRAELI WAR, or the beginning of the Gazan Civil War, (if Abbas tries to assert his legitimate control over Gaza - in which case he will get help from the USA and Israel - and he will win).

To become a big Arab-Israeli War a few other things would have to happen:

(1) Assad would have to try to take advantage of stepped up hostilities between Gaza and Israel, and use THAT as a pretext to attack Israel in a cynical attempt to strengthen his precarious hold over Syria and perhaps to regain control over Lebanon. Assad would claim to be coming to the aid of the Gazans.

(2) Hiz b'Allah would have to step up its attacks against Israel from southern Lebanon into a full-fledged offensive. They'd use Gaza and the Shebaa Farms as a pretext (and also they're newly re-motivated by the belief that the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza was FORCED by Hamas and terror).

(3) Zarqawi would merely have to step up attacks against King Abdullah II of Jordan to create a third front in the ARab-Isrzaeli War, (and a fourth in the overall GWOT - if you include Gaza, Shebaa farms, and the Sunni Traingle; it's the "FIFTH FRONT" if you include eastern Afghanistan; sixth if you inlcude the Moro islands; seventh if you include Kashmir - AND SO ON; IOW: JIHAD IS A GLOBAL WAR).

Right now, the odds of another Arab-Israeli War are as least as good as the odds of a Gazan Civil War. The odds that peace will break out are quite bad

"REUTERS": "Pro-Syrian Hizbollah guerrillas raided north Israel in a botched attempt to capture Israeli troops on Monday, triggering the worst round of fighting since Israel pulled out of south Lebanon five years ago. Lebanese security sources said Hizbollah guerrillas raided Israeli posts in the Israeli part of the divided border village of Ghajar..."

AP/FOX: "Hezbollah guerrillas fired mortars and rockets at Israeli troops Monday in a disputed border area, the first clash between the two sides in five months, the group said. The Israeli army confirmed that several missiles or mortars were fired from Lebanon into the Chebaa Farms, an area where the borders of Lebanon, Syria and Israel meet."

Israel has indicted two West Bank militants for al-Qaida membership, Egypt arrested operatives trying to cross into Israel and a Palestinian security official has acknowledged al-Qaida is "organizing cells and gathering supporters."

Al-Qaida's inroads are still preliminary, but officials fear a doomsday scenario if it takes root.

The closer we get to defeating the jihadoterrorists (al Qaeda in Iraq, and Syria and Iran in the UNSC - for starters), the more desperate they all become and as a result they try desperate attacks to attempt to divert our focus and diminish our resolve - hence the Egyptian beach-resort bombing, the wedding bombing in Jordan and the recent mosque bombing in Samarra.

Mr. Regev added: "Abu Mazen goes to foreign capitals and says, 'I'm the partner you want. I'm the address.' But if he's not a partner in stopping violence, how can he be a partner for peace?"

If the soldier "isn't returned immediately then Israel will have to act," Mr. Regev said. ...

Hamas spokesman, Mushir al-Masri, now a member of the Palestinian Parliament, welcomed the attack. "We consider this operation a part of the natural response to Zionist crimes, especially after the series of killings of children, women, old men and whole families in Gaza," he said. "It is the right of our people to defend themselves with all the means available."

The spokesman for the Popular Resistance Committees, Abu Mujahid, said the attack was carried out to avenge Israel's assassination of the group's leader, Jamal Abu Samahdana, on June 8. Mr. Samahdana, who had been wanted by Israel, had also been serving the Hamas government as the commander of a new "executive force," a mostly Hamas militia that has engaged in a series of clashes with Fatah-dominated forces like the Preventive Security.

Iran wants to scuttle any deal between Abbas and Hamas, and to distract the world from maintaining the focus necessary to halt their nuclear weapons program.

REMEMBER: Israel is LITTLE SATAN to Iran - (and to anti-Semitic isolationists in the USA). Their MAIN goal is to get NUKES in order to defeat the GREAT SATAN - the USA. Iran (and al Qaeda) have been attempting to start a regional war in order to distract us from this - their ULTIMATE goal.
