The U.S. unemployment rate plunged to 7.8 per cent, the lowest since January 2009, as the number of Americans saying they have jobs increased by more than 870,000 in September from the previous month. 

All year, the unemployment rate has been stuck in a range of 8.3 per cent to 8.1 per cent, as it was in August. Unlike recent dips in the unemployment rate, the September drop was the result of more people telling a government survey of households that they have jobs. Last month, the jobless rate dropped because thousands of people gave up looking for work. 

The improvement in the unemployment rate could be a boon for President Barack Obama, who is trying to regain his campaign footing after a lacklustre performance in this week’s first of three presidential debates.

A New York police detective shot and killed an unarmed man, whose hands, a witness said, were on the steering wheel of his Honda, after he had been pulled over early Thursday for cutting off two police trucks on the Grand Central Parkway in Queens, the authorities said.

The shooting, which occurred at 5:15 a.m., was the latest in a series of episodes in which police officers fatally shot or wounded civilians. While the Police Department had explanations in the other instances, it could not immediately provide one for the shooting on Thursday.

The detective, Hassan Hamdy, 39, a 14-year veteran assigned to the Emergency Service Unit, fired one bullet through an open window of the car, which his squad had just pulled over with the help of a second police vehicle. The bullet struck the driver, Noel Polanco, 22, in the abdomen. He was declared dead less than an hour later at New York Hospital Queens....

... A passenger in Mr. Polanco’s car, Diane Deferrari, said in a phone interview Thursday night that just before pulling the car over, officers appeared irate that Mr. Polanco had cut them off. She said that one of the officers — but not Detective Hamdy — stuck up his middle finger and was screaming obscenities from one of the moving police trucks.

“As soon as we stopped — they were rushing the car,” Ms. Deferrari said. “It was like an army.”

She said a group of officers swarmed the car, yelling for the three people in Mr. Polanco’s car to put their hands up. Mr. Polanco, whose hands were still on the steering wheel, had no time to comply, Ms. Deferrari said. At that instant, a shot rang out, and Mr. Polanco gasped for air, she said.

“I felt the powder in my face,” she said.

Officers then dragged Mr. Polanco from the car and onto the highway, where traffic was snarled, as early-morning commuters slowed to look, she said.

“This is all a case of road rage on behalf of the N.Y.P.D. — that’s all this is,” she said. ...

FRENCH GOVERNMENT DELEGITIMIZING JERUSALEM

France’s most populous administrative zone, encompassing the capital Paris, has signed a cooperation agreement with the Palestinian district of Jerusalem, a move organizers say is designed to send a “political message” of solidarity with the Palestinians and their aspirations for a future capital in the city.

The French region described the agreement as the “first of its kind.”

The decision is a blow to Israel’s claim that the eastern sector is part of its united capital. A spokesman for Israel’s Foreign Ministry said east Jerusalem “does not exist” as a separate entity and that the French council was “living in a make-believe world.”

The Regional Council of Île-de-France voted September 28 in favor of a “decentralized cooperation agreement” with the Palestinian Authority (PA) district of Jerusalem, making it “the first French community to sign an agreement of cooperation with the Arab part of the holy city,” a statement on the council’s website read. The agreement is to be officially signed during the month of October.

Israel extended its sovereignty to the entire city of Jerusalem following the Six-Day War of 1967, and does not recognize the PA’s Jerusalem district, which incorporates some 400,000 Palestinian residents in Jerusalem and its outskirts.

Nor should they recognize such a thing, because it doesn't exist. What the French government is doing here is offensive, and a waste of their own public's taxpayers money. Now you can see where any taxes the Hollande government might rob the public of might go - to delegitimization efforts against other countries.

The Judge went out of her way to validate and substantiate the ridiculous premise of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), that the AFDI pro-freedom ad would endanger passengers on the D.C. subways and thus must not be posted, or at least delayed until some (fanciful) time when the jihad threat would subside. It was painful to watch Judge Collyer almost physically wrestling with the First Amendment, trying to tackle it and pin it to the floor. But the First Amendment was much too wily for the wrongheaded, utterly subjective, and clueless judge. 

... The ad is not hate speech, it's love speech. It's love of life speech. The ad speaks to the defense of freedom and individual rights for all. LEWISTON, Maine (AP) — Ten years after a Lewiston mayor set off a firestorm by saying the city's Somali population was growing too fast, a new mayor's remarks about the immigrant community is sparking another wave of anger and calls for his resignation.

Somali immigrants and their supporters in this former mill city in central Maine say Mayor Robert Macdonald should apologize and step down for what they call repeated anti-immigrant remarks, including telling a British Broadcasting Corp. interviewer that immigrants should "accept our culture and leave your culture at the door."

A group of about 50 protesters rallied outside City Hall on Thursday before delivering 1,400 petitions to Macdonald's office, asking for his resignation.

The mayor's remarks sounded like he was telling immigrants to abandon their religion, their language and their identities, said Nimo Yonis, 26, one of an about 6,000 Somali refugees who live in Lewiston and the neighboring city of Auburn. The mayor's words were painful, hurtful and "represent hate," she said.

"Basically, he's telling us to forget who we were," Yonis said. "Just leaving your culture at the door is leaving what you believe, what you stand for and who you are at the door."

Macdonald has attempted to clarify his comments, saying immigrants should try to assimilate into American culture. He has said his comments were taken out of context, and has claimed he never said anything derogatory about Somalis.

I won't be surprised if the AP's taken anything he says out of context too, and the BBC would certainly be willing to do that. But he's right if he simply challenged their cultural beliefs, which is NOT the same as attacking race. And learning local language is a positive step too, both in and out of the household. If they want to adhere to the Religion of Rape, they should remain in Somalia.

He wrote in a local weekly newspaper that "submissive Somali women turn into obnoxious customers at the grocery store cash register." He also wrote that he was tired of news stories about Somalis being treated poorly; most complaints, he wrote, came from "boo-hoo white do-gooders and their carpetbagger friends."

He later told a reporter that immigrants shouldn't "insert your culture, which obviously isn't working, into ours, which does."

And that's right, I'm afraid. Being an immigrant doesn't make you a saint, and some of those immigrants have been acting like they own the place. They certainly didn't seem to get much support for that protest they had by the town hall either. The first highlighted part likely refers to the leftarded MSM which has been pushing the victimology line here.

Maine has been having a lot of problems with welfare, exactly what these Somalis want to exploit, and should try to reverse the laws allowing it.

THE MIND OF MARINE LE PEN

Here's another something to ponder that puts Marine Le Pen's dedication to a clear view under a question mark:

In a follow-up interview on French TV, Le Pen repeated her statements, adding, “Jewish skullcaps are obviously not a problem in our country,” but “what would people say if I’d only asked to ban Muslim clothing? They’d burn me as a Muslim-hater.” Le Pen has no qualms about trampling on the right to religious expression of both Jews and Muslims to advance her xenophobic and intolerant agendas.

I fail to see her logic here. She's not making clear whether it's the public opinion or the media she's worried about. And even the most demented of Europeans would surely admit that they've never felt physically threatened by Jewish men wearing kippas, not even Haredim. So what's she worried about anyway? And if she's got a problem with kippas, does that also include the similar caps worn by Catholic priests?

The sad part is that the Jerusalem Post themselves are blurring the differences here between Judaism and Islam, and may even be trying to defame Geert Wilders even if his party does have a flaw:

Europe’s Jewry cannot rely on politicians such as Le Pen. And Le Pen is not the only right-wing disappointment. Wilders’s Party for Freedom has reportedly included in its platform a prohibition of ritual slaughter – both Muslim and Jewish. And Dion Graus, a parliamentarian from the party, intends to continue efforts to ban the import of ritually slaughtered meat. Chief Ashkenazi Rabbi Yona Metzger has written to Wilders asking him to reconsider.

Despite this being bothersome, it somehow doesn't strike me as being as problematic as Le Pen's own galling mishmash, so I'm not going to just write off Wilders the way they want to. But a difference should be made clear - what's considered "halal" is not considered kosher: there's plenty of food manufactured under halal steps like seafood that's not considered kosher by Jewish dietary habits. Not even meat. And halal food isn't as good with health benefits as kosher is. Maybe those who think kosher food could be a problem might want to reconsider and just call for clearer labels on halal food packages?

Update: just brilliant, the moldy-old father of Marine, Jean-Marie, has defended her statements with no interest in distinguishing himself from how he handled his own beliefs before:

Jean-Marie Le Pen, founder and former leader of the far right-wing French party National Front (FN), on Wednesday came to the defense of his daughter and current leader of the party, Marine Le Pen, who called for the prohibition in public of Muslim veils and Jewish kippot.

In an interview with AFP, Jean Marie Le Pen said his daughter initially had spoken to the daily Le Monde about the veils, and that the matter of skullcaps was raised only by her interviewer.

“She didn’t put the two subjects on the same ground,” he said. “She [just] demanded that Jews wearing a kippa make a patriotic gesture not to wear it in order to more easily enable a prohibition against the veil.”

No, Le Pen, she didn't. She said they should be banned in public, not make a request to help make things easier. She didn't think over her response well either. Comparing such a pint-sized headwear to the veil and female to male garments was stupid too. As I'd implied before in fairness, if she wanted to make a case in that context, she could have asked religiously observant married Jewish women to refrain from wearing hair-scarves while telling the interviewer that she can't see how such teensy male headwear as a kippa counts because it doesn't hide identities. But she didn't, because she's so desperate to "cash in" on the platforms she allegedly supports. Likewise, her father's own defenses of her approach fall flat, and that includes the following groaner:

Le Pen added that Sarkozy’s center-right UMP party lost because it had always refused to form an alliance with the FN. In an interview earlier this week with the extreme right-wing newspaper Minute, he accused the B’nai B’rith of having “imposed” this stance on the UMP.

When questioned about this during his interview with the AFP, he said he himself had not witnessed this firsthand.

“But it was said 10 times, 100 times,” he explained. “It is not a scoop. It is a plausible explanation. It was not denied.”

He sounds like a 9-11 truther in the vein of Lyndon LaRouche and Ron Paul. This is just a form of Jew-blame, accusing the community of influencing political platforms for all the wrong reasons.

LYON (EJP)---Three young Jews wearing skullcaps have been severely attacked Saturday night in Villeurbanne, near Lyon, by ten people, described as being of North-African origin, who beat them with hammers and iron bars, an act denounced as "extremely serious" by French Interior Minister Manuel Valls.

The Interior Ministry says the attack by 10 assailants on the three people was anti-Semitic, and has called for the assailants to be brought to justice. Two of the victims were hospitalized.

The office of Manuel Valls said Sunday that police were mobilized to arrest those behind the attack a night earlier in Villeurbaine, near the city of Lyon.

The ministry said the assailants wielded a hammer and an iron bar.

One youth had an open wound to the head and a girl was struck in the neck, authorities said. The third was hit in the arm.

French Interior Minister Valls, denouncing the assault, said he was "determined to fight against any aggression of a religious nature.

"These extremely serious acts are a deliberate attack against our republic, which allows everyone, without exception, to live freely and in all safety in their religious affiliation," his office said in a statement.

The victims were hospitalised but later released as police stepped up patrols in the neighbourhood.

The National Bureau of Vigilance against Anti-Semitism said the attackers were of North African origin.

Investigations were under way and no suspects had been arrested.

"We are in the 21st century and there are youngsters assaulting those wearing Jewish skull caps with hammers and bars," lawyer Alain Jakubowicz of French civil liberties group Licra said.

Lyon is located about 470 kilometres (300 miles) south of Paris. The Jewish community there is about 20,000 strong.

France is home to western Europe’s largest Jewish community, estimated at about 600,000 people, and has faced bouts of violent anti-Semitism.

Much of France was shaken in March when a radical Muslim gunman shot dead a rabbi and three Jewish children when he attacked a Jewish school in southwestern Toulouse.

Then-President Nicolas Sarkozy promised o crack down on Muslim extremism and anti-Semitic incidents.

And this is the reason why AARP has said that your plan would weaken Medicare substantially, and that's why they were supportive of the approach that we took.

The Free Gaza Movement, a U.S.-based activist group known for provisioning ships to run the Israeli-Egyptian blockade of Gaza, was hit with charges of anti-Semitism on Wednesday after posting a tweet claiming that Jews were responsible for the Holocaust.

“Zionists operated the concentration camps and helped murder millions of innocent Jews,” read a Tweet posted Sunday to @freegazaorg, the official Twitter feed of the group, which includes Canadian author Naomi Klein and Bishop Desmond Tutu on its board of advisors.

An embedded link led to a video of a speech by known conspiracy theorist Eustace Mullins claiming that the word Nazi is an amalgam of the words “National socialism” and “Zionist.”

“[Hitler] allied with the Zionist Party, and the mission of the Nazis was to force the anti-Zionist Jews to accept Zionism — and this is what the concentration camps were about,” said Mr. Mullins, who died of a stroke in 2010.

Although the tweet was eventually deleted, it was picked up on Monday by Avi Mayer, head of social media with the Jewish Agency for Israel. In a Wednesday blog post, Mr. Mayer posted a screenshot of the post along with a link to the video, which he claimed revealed Free Gaza as “the lowest anti-Semites.”

Within hours, the American founder of the movement, Greta Berlin, tweeted that she had intended only to publish the link to her private Facebook account, but it was accidentally redirected to the Free Gaza Twitter feed.

“I shared it without watching it. I am sorry that I just sent it forward without looking at it. It won’t happen again,” read a tweet from the Free Gaza Movement account, posted Wednesday afternoon.

Message to monster Berlin: your "apology" is not accepted. This kind of vile condonement of conspiracy theories goes hand-in-glove with people of your standing. On the 1st of October 1989, the same year that the Berlin Wall fell, Axel Lundahl Madsen and Eigil Eskildsen were the first homosexuals in the world to be married. They were engaged in 1950, and had been together since 1944. They even changed their last name to Axgil. They helped found the Danish Gay and Lesbian Organisation and a prize - the Axgil - is given in their name. Only problem is that a new book has revealed that Eigil Eskildsen volunteered to serve in a Nazi Uniform in 1943. This isn't the first time Nazism and Homosexuality have been associated.
