Locals who have lived in the area for a long time say these kinds of exercises are unprecedented.

No rumors so much as shock by how many bombs that are being blown up. Especially the bunker busting type. Like I said, people are use to the bombs. But everybody is saying that the vast quantity of bombs and especially the bunker busters, are far more than normal.
You can't ignore the bombs here. But people who have lived here for a long time, have gotten to where they don't "hear" them as much. Until now. Suddenly, everybody is feeling these bombs.
Maybe they're getting ready for possible troubles surrounding an invasion of Syria, like for instance, IRAN.
Or maybe Obama is actually going to go after Iran.
Obviously we won't know until it happens. I definitely would be happy if it's Iran.
Bunker busters would makes sense for Iran.

I would like to add that the only speculation involved in anything we have written on this is our use of the term "bunker-busters". We do not know that the bombs being used are bunker-busters. There really isn't much left at Ft. Knox. The Armor school has long moved to Ft. Benning. They did take in a new crop of ROTC cadets last week so maybe they are doing firepower demonstrations.
The sort of exercise where one might see a bunch of bombs going off would be done out West on the large test and training ranges such as in Nevada or Ft. Irwin in California or Ft. Hood, TX even.
Knox would be a good training ground for a European conflict, but probably not so useful for the Middle East.
