I think you are confusing Franklin Foer with Eric Foner.
The Foers (Franklin, Jonathan, and Joshua) were raised in Washington, D.C., not New York.
Eric Foner, a faculty member at Columbia, is the son of CCNY professor Philip Foner.
By the way, Jake & Maggie Gyllenhaal are the children of Eric Foner's first wife, Naomi Foner Gyllenhaal.
