DOUBLE UH-OH'S: IMF WARNING ON GLOBAL GROWTH AND NEW GREEK WORRIES

1- The IMF warned on Tuesday that global growth prospects have dimmed as the sovereign-debt crisis in the euro zone has entered a “perilous new phase.”

2 - The euro is falling against the dollar on worries that Greece might not reach a deal with its creditors. A deal is needed in order for Greece to receive its next bailout payment and avoid a default. A default could hurt Europe's financial system and trigger a financial panic around the world.

Much of the theatrics over the last several months have been deliberately handled - with what's touted as weekly salvation plans followed by new angst - to give big money handlers time to move assets to plan b and plan c investments so that the impact is reduced when the inevitable happens.

Unfortunately, the inevitable is gonna happen a lot sooner than the planners think and it will have very nasty short term consequences.

Ancient Jewish scrolls found in north Afghanistan

A cache of ancient Jewish scrolls from northern Afghanistan that has only recently come to light is creating a storm among scholars who say the landmark find could reveal an undiscovered side of medieval Jewry.

The 150 or so documents, dated from the 11th century, were found in Afghanistan's Samangan province and most likely smuggled out—a sorry but common fate for the impoverished and war-torn country's antiquities.

Israeli emeritus professor Shaul Shaked, who has examined some of the poems, commercial records and judicial agreements that make up the treasure, said while the existence of ancient Afghan Jewry is known, their culture was still a mystery.

"Here, for the first time, we see evidence and we can actually study the writings of this Jewish community. It's very exciting," Shaked told Reuters by telephone from Israel, where he teaches at the Comparative Religion and Iranian Studies department at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

The hoard is currently being kept by private antique dealers in London, who have been producing a trickle of new documents over the past two years, which is when Shaked believes they were found and pirated out of Afghanistan in a clandestine operation.

It is likely they belonged to Jewish merchants on the Silk Road running across Central Asia, said T. Michael Law, a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellow at Oxford University's Center for Hebrew and Jewish Studies.

"They might have been left there by merchants traveling along the way, but they could also come from another nearby area and deposited for a reason we do not yet understand," Law said.

‘Sold elsewhere for ten times more’

Cultural authorities in Kabul had mixed reactions to the find, which scholars say is without a doubt from Afghanistan, arguing that the Judeo-Persian language used on the scrolls is similar to other Afghan Jewish manuscripts.

During a talk at a South Carolina foreign policy forum, Newt floated some half cooked ideas about puting the dollar back on the Gold Standard.

I can imagine nothing to be more foolish at a time when the world economy is in the midst of a unprecedented financial crisis and where massive injections of liquidity have barely sufficed to soften the blow of multiple collapsing bubbles.

Newt also states that the Fed should forget Employment, and concentrate only upon Inflation. It was precisely the European Central Bank's preoccupation with Inflation that has led it to stymie the European economy!

What we need is more transparent and flexible markets, not extremely volatile markets (that benefit traders) nor currencies (like the Chinese) that are held artificially fast.

By floating this kind of retrograde nostalgia Newt is proving he is fit for the Kremlin, but not the White House.

Modern mufti in Jerusalem preaches the hate of the Hadith

The prime minister has demanded an investigation into a local mufti who preached anti-Jewish hatemongering (via Big Peace):

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu Sunday called on Attorney-General Yehuda Weinstein to open an investigation into Jerusalem Mufti Sheikh Muhammad Hussein for incitement after he was recorded quoting a passage by the Islamic prophet Muhammad in the Hadith that calls for the killing of Jews.

"These are grave words that the world needs to condemn," Netanyahu said.

Responding to the allegations of incitement on Israel Radio Sunday, Sheikh Muhammad Hussein denied inciting the murder of Jews, saying he was just quoting the Islamic text. "I can't change the Hadith," he added.

But he can admit what that particular filth is like, and it's just as bad in the main Koran, as seen in verses 2:52-65 and 5:59-60, for example. It just shows what a horrific hate book both the Koran and Hadith really are.

BACHMANN IS RIGHT ABOUT NEWT: HE'S AWFUL

BACHMANN:

For me, these past weeks have been filled with much prayer and personal reflection - which has provided some clarity. Ultimately, I recognize that endorsing a candidate is the responsible thing to do.

But it is far more responsible to ensure that candidate is one I can support with a strong conviction knowing, without any doubt, that they protect our values and have the ability to restore our nation's greatness. With some doubt still present, I am not yet prepared to offer my endorsement, but look forward to doing so in the coming weeks.

However, through this exhaustive process of consideration, it was strikingly obvious that one candidate could not be less acceptable to be our Party's nominee.

He lacks the poise, experience and moral fiber to represent our principles and values. That candidate is Newt Gingrich.

In sum, our nation is in desperate need of a proven and moral leader who can point us back in the right direction - not a desperately flawed candidate like Newt Gingrich who has only proven he cannot lead.

ARE REPUBLICANS BIGOTS?

I find it difficult to understand just what unites the various followers of the "anybody but Mitt" movement. If one looks at Mitt's record as a successful businessman and competent Governor, and add to that the fact that he is from outside the Beltway, he appears to be the best qualified candidate in the Republican pack.

Whatever one thinks of Mormonism it is a uniquely American form of Christianity. I know very little of the Mormon faith: mostly what one hears second or third hand; what one learns of the Federal Governments attempt to isolate the Mormons out west; and of course what one gleans from reading the Book of Mormon - if it happens to be in the night table at your Motel. Yes - there is a lot about Mormonism that seems strange to me - but as one who was brought up as a jew I must point out that many christian beliefs - for example the Holy Trinity, Mary's Immaculate Conception, and Jesus's Birth Incarnate also seem...well, complex to say the least.

As a believer in G-d, I accept the fact that others embrace alternative faiths. It appears to me that Mitt Romney believes in G-d, the 10 Commandments etc. Newt Gingrich, on the other hand, seems to believe in Newt Gingrich above all else.

People who criticise Romney seem to be motivated by a deep seated mistrust - but they rarely provide substantive arguments that criticise his record of service. From my perspective the most fervent critics of Mitt Romney seem to be Christians who don't like Mormons. And unless they can provide more substantive arguments against Romney's qualifications or positions then they are nothing less than Bigots.

Newt Gingrich and the politics of frustration

Conservatives are very frustrated, and rightfully so. Their feeling is that they play by the rules – they work hard, pay their taxes, raise their kids right – but what do they get for it? Their values are mocked on television and the movies, the media castigates them as a bunch of extremists, they pay taxes while half of the country does not, and the Obama administration took to demagouging them virtually from day one of his tenure. I know of what I speak – a few months back I was driving down the road and saw a sign in front of a business lamenting, “Where is the America I grew up in?” I nodded my head in approval.

Enter Newt Gingrich, the person on the debate stage who finally speaks truth to power. ‘Not so fast, John King!’ ‘Hold it just a damned minute, Diane Sawyer!’ ‘How dare you talk to me like that, Brian Williams!’ These are the sorts of thoughts that millions of conservatives have every week. And now here is Newt Gingrich actually saying it right to them. Never mind the fact that he is expressing indignation at liberals while sometimes offering not-so-conservative policies, or using it as a form of misdirection to turn attention away from his own questionable deeds. Conservatives everywhere love to hear somebody finally stick it to the elites.

This explains why they are excited about the prospect of an Obama-Gingrich debate. They love the thought of someone finally standing in front of Obama and saying, “How dare you, sir!”

SRI LANKA COUNTER-ATTACKING AGAINST JIHAD: EXPELS 16 MUSLIM CLERICS

Sri Lanka has reportedly ordered 161 foreign Muslim preachers to leave the country for flouting visa regulations.

A senior immigration official was quoted as saying that the clerics had no right to preach in mosques because they had arrived on tourist visas. He also said that some local Muslims had complained that the visitors were not teaching a moderate form of Islam.

The preachers - from Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, the Maldives and Arab nations - must now leave by 31 January.
