In the biggest energy deal in years, Exxon Mobil said on Monday that it had agreed to buy XTO Energy, a domestic producer of natural gas, in an all-stock deal valued at $31 billion to increase its holdings in unconventional resources in the United States.

The deal includes the assumption of $10 billion in debt.

The purchase allows Exxon, the world’s largest publicly traded oil company, to expand in shale gas, an area that has grown tremendously in the last few years. It will give Exxon the equivalent of about 45 trillion cubic feet of natural gas throughout the United States.

The acquisition extends Exxon’s bet that fossil fuels will remain a critical part of the nation’s energy supplies for decades to come.

In recent years, energy companies have discovered large reserves of natural gas tightly trapped in shale rocks in Texas, Colorado and Wisconsin, as well as in the Northeast. The discoveries have led to a gas drilling boom that has greatly expanded domestic resources, while also raising some environmental concerns.

Exxon will set up a production unit to manage its global portfolio of unconventional resources, which include shale gas, tight gas, coal bed methane and shale oil. It will be based in Fort Worth in XTO’s current offices.

Add to this, the fact that oil has also been found to be a naturally-occurring substance, not a "fossil fuel", and it just seems like every argument Greenies make is just coming down like a house of cards.

M. Simon at Power and Control has discovered a group of scientists vying to be the leaders of the next "Crisis" movement:

An international group of scientists say there is an immediate need for a global assessment of the nitrogen cycle and its impact on climate.

On a planetary scale, human activities, especially fertiliser application, have more than doubled the amount of reactive nitrogen in circulation on land. This massive alteration of the nitrogen cycle affects climate, food security, energy security, human health and ecosystem health. The long-term consequences of these changes are yet to be fully realised, but the human impact on the nitrogen cycle has so far been largely missed in international environmental assessments.

Nitrogen's role in climate change will be highlighted at an event on 7 December at the COP-15 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen. Event organisers will be calling for a new assessment of nitrogen and climate, which will identify innovative nitrogen management strategies for global climate change mitigation and associated co-benefits to society.

Dr Cheryl Palm, the chair of the International Nitrogen Initiative (INI), which is organising the event, said "Nitrogen and climate interactions are not yet adequately included in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change assessment process.

Will Water Footprints be the Next "Energy Star"?

Like their cousin the carbon footprint, water footprints are one of the latest methods scientists and policy makers are using to assess humanity's impact on the planet. And now businesses are starting to use water footprinting as well.

A water footprint measures the total amount of water it takes for a company to manufacture and transport a product, or for a city, country, or business to operate.

Calculating water footprints can help businesses and communities better understand and prepare for the impacts of global water scarcity, according to experts.

Exceptionally water-intensive products and food items include beef, coffee, and cotton. For example 2 pounds (1 kilogram) of beef requires 4,227 gallons (16,000 liters) of water to produce, once you consider the water needed to grow feed and process the meat, according to WFN. Likewise, 776 gallons (2,900 liters) of water is needed to make a cotton shirt.

Applying a standard to water footprinting is crucial, said Stuart Orr, WWFs freshwater-footprint manager. That's because the complex ecological analysis, which involves identifying and measuring multiple water inputs, is "confusing everybody right now," he said.

But, footprinting represents the best tool for reducing water demand in already severely water-stressed countries that will have to support some 3 billion people by 2025.

"We cant screw this up," he added. "There is no Plan B with water. Lets be clear about that."

The U.S. has the biggest water footprint per capita, at 766,098 gallons (2.9 million liters) per person each year, according to WFN.

When you drink water, or ingest anything which has water in it - which is everything - it goes through your system, and comes out as urine which contains, get this, WATER.

Which then evaporates, and comes down in the form of rainfall, dew, etc.

And, of course, this "we're running out of water and we must do something about it right now" scenario also rests on the assumption that we will develop no new technology which will help us harvest water.

No new Desalination technology.

No new Cloud Seeding technology.

Jerusalem – Israel and Turkey have managed to retain military cooperation despite rising political tension, a report by the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs said.

The report asserted that the Islamist government of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has kept their military partnership with Israel despite their political crisis this year. Still, the Center, in a report by a leading U.S. analyst, warned that Israeli-Turkish relations were threatened by Ankara’s strategic alliance with Syria.

“Israel’s military relationship with Turkey, including ongoing joint air force training, military exchanges, and arms sales, appears to be secure for the time being,” the report, titled “The Islamist Transformation in Turkish Politics,” said. “Should bilateral political tensions continue, and as Ankara and Damascus enhance strategic ties, inevitably Israeli-Turkish military-to-military relations will suffer.”

I think sooner or later, Israel will have to come to terms with how Islamofascism is on the rise again in Turkey, and that's why continuation of army ties is just not worth it.

Mr. Schenker, now a senior fellow at the Washington Institute, said Ankara’s embrace of Syria over the last three years reflected the decline of Turkey’s military. MOGADISHU SUICIDE BOMBER FROM DENMARK

It has now been confirmed that the suicide bomber who murdered 24 human beings, including 3 Ministers (Education, Higher Education and Health ministers) in the Somali government came from Denmark. Most of the victims were students at Banadir University. The 24 year old Somali lived for 15 years in Denmark, before returning with his wife and children to Somalia in 2008, to commit this crime, reportedly on behalf of al Shahaab. Gee...I wonder what motivates these people?

BRRRRRRR!: WORST SNOWSTORM IN IOWA IN 38 YEARS

It's official: The 2009 blizzard of Dec. 7-9 was the snowiest storm in 38 years, almost 39.

It dropped some 10.2 inches of snow across Iowa on average, according to State Climatologist Harry Hillaker.

This week's storm ranks third in snowfall statewide since 1950.

"The storm we had this week was incredibly well forecast," said Hillaker. "Then it actually did what it was expected to do. It started slowly and didn't cause a lot of surprises."

A few reports from some areas of the state still haven't been received, but they are not expected to change the order of things, Hillaker said.
