European efforts to ban airbrushing in fashion photography are gaining momentum.
The U.K.’s Committee of Advertising Practice has received a report compiled by more than 40 academics that demands a ban on ads featuring digitally altered models targeting girls under 16 years old.The report, signed by academics from countries including the U.K., the U.S., Australia and Brazil, comes just six weeks after a group of French politicians proposed a law that could require all retouched photos to be labeled as such.The U.K. report shows a correlation between unhealthy behavior in adolescents who are exposed to images of skinny, airbrushed models.
The Committee of Advertising Practice (CAP) is responsible for updating and revising the British code of advertising.“The weight of the evidence…shows that thin, ‘perfected’ media images have a detrimental effect on how girls and women think and feel about their own bodies,” said Dr. Helga Dittmar of the University of Sussex, one of the authors of the report.

A Pakistani court has ordered that two men have their ears and noses cut off, as punishment for doing the same to a woman who refused to marry one of them.

I think the federal government ought to start a federal/national lottery.
This is how it should be done:
All tax-filers could opt to pay an additional $52 to have their social security number entered into a weekly lottery.
There are 150 MILLION tax-filers, so this could potentially raise $5.2 billion.
The federal government would keep half - and use it to pay for a specific project - like a new hospital for veterans..
Then, every week, an IRS computer would randomly select the social security/TAX ID number of a tax-filer who opted in.
So every week, there'd be a $75 MILLION dollar winner - and the winner would be guaranteed to be a tax-paying US citizen, (or legally employed resident).
Once an SS/TAX ID number has been selected, then that number would be withdrawn from the pool of remaining numbers.
So, there's guaranteed to be a new multi-millionaire every week.

The winnings would be free of federal income tax, but not state or local taxes.

Water does not disappear. It changes form. When you cook, water evaporates ... and then comes back down to earth in the form of rainfall, dew, etc.
When you irrigate crops, water evaporate and/or get transferred into the plants, where it is stored, and consequently ends up in the digestive systems of human beings and animals.
When you drink water, or ingest anything which has water in it - which is everything - it goes through your system, and comes out as urine which contains, get this, WATER.
Which then evaporates, and comes down in the form of rainfall, dew, etc.
And, of course, this "we're running out of water and we must do something about it right now" scenario also rests on the assumption that we will develop no new technology which will help us harvest water.

The Senate health reform bill is packed with lumps of coal for New York's Christmas stocking.
Gov. Paterson, Mayor Bloomberg and other officials warned the Senate plan would:
- Force the city to close 100 health clinics.
- Blow a $1 billion hole in the state's budget.
- Threaten struggling hospitals, nursing homes and other facilities.
"It is really a disgrace and we've got to make sure that we fight before the bill is finally passed," Bloomberg fumed.
New York ended up on the short end as Senate brokers showered cash on states whose senators were among the last holdouts before Democratic leaders locked up the 60 needed votes.

In reading the health-care bill approved by the House of Representatives and Harry Reid’s bill pending in the Senate, I find (so far) 26 new opportunities for plaintiff lawyers to sue doctors for malpractice.
At least 26 sections in the House bill and 21 sections in Senator Reid’s bill require that doctors adhere to certain standards of care in patient care, payment initiatives, payment determinations, and wellness-prevention programs that do not now exist in law. Each of these provisions could be used by a plaintiff’s lawyer to assert that the doctor failed to comply with “best practices” guidelines and become the basis for a medical-malpractice lawsuit.
What frustrates physicians and state policymakers alike is that none of these proposed guidelines actually enhance patient care or safety. Instead, in inventing all these new standards of care — relating to such things as effectiveness research, accountability provisions, medical training standards, research and data recorded by pilot programs, task force and demonstration projects, qualification standards for medical personnel, and quality standards (many with enhanced civil penalties) — Congress is creating a regulatory nightmare for physicians and hospitals.

The Islamist group Hamas is masterminding efforts to have senior Israeli leaders arrested for alleged war crimes when they visit European countries including Britain, a top Hamas official involved in the effort has told The Times.
The claim comes amid continuing diplomatic fallout after a British arrest warrant was issued last week against Tzipi Livni, who served as Foreign Minister during Israel’s Gaza offensive last winter. The warrant was withdrawn when it became clear that Ms Livni, now leader of the opposition, was not in the country. The car of Iranian opposition leader Mirhossein Mousavi has been attacked by "plainclothes men" on motorbikes, reformist website has reported.
The assault happened as Mr Mousavi returned to Tehran after attending the funeral of leading dissident cleric Grand Ayatollah Hossein Ali Montazeri in Qom, Kaleme website said.
The group on motorbikes reportedly insulted Mr Mousavi, and those accompanying him, and stopped his motorcade several times.
"One of the assailants shattered the back window of the car carrying Mousavi," Kaleme said.
Earlier, opponents of Grand Ayatollah Montazeri had stopped his memorial service, reports said.
Huge crowds of Iranians were marking the funeral in Qom, 80 miles south of Tehran. Websites reported scuffles between mourners and police.
