A Turning Point in the Revolution

The 'rebel' Ayatollah Montazeri passed today on Qods Day. I had been concerned about the lack of new protest footage coming out of Iran late this week, but today I am just swimming in it and can barely keep up.

Iranians have been protesting almost every day since the 7th and of course screaming from rooftops every night for months. I have been documenting this in a playlist in my sidebar, which you've all hopefully noticed by now.

But this is something I have not seen before: people taking to the streets, in Tehran on Mohseni Square, no less, late into the night.

RIFQA BARY'S BROTHER BUSTED!

Atlas Shrugs reports that the brother of Rifqa Bary named Rilvan had been arrested last month on charges involving drinking, a strong clue to how some Muslims in the west, if anywhere, aren't that faithful to the Islamic opposition to alcohol. His arraignment is supposed to be in another two days, the same time the next hearing for Rifqa's custody issues was supposed to take place.

We have to hope this'll be noted in any further hearings Rifqa herself will have in court, but only if we remain on the ball and alert will it be possible.

BRITAIN'S SUPREME COURT DELEGITIMIZES ORTHODOX JEWISH SCHOOL SYSTEM

Melanie Phillips reports that the UK's supreme court has made an absurd ruling on the case of an Orthodox Jewish school that wouldn't accept a child whose mother had converted to Judaism under the Masorti (Conservative) sect.

They claim it was racial discrimination, when it was just a case of their not accepting students who don't follow their sect of religion in Judaism.

I've sometimes thought that a sufficient distinction is needed between the Jewish race and its similarly named religion, so that certain matters won't be confused.

Unfortunately, you won't find those kind of distinctions in Britain, which is clearly set out to delegitimize the religious school system there. But don't worry, you can be quite sure that won't happen with Muslim schools in such a hurry!

BBC: UK shoppers have defied the harsh winter weather to spend during the last weekend before the Christmas holidays.

The New West End Company, which represents more than 600 traders in central London, said sales were up 10% on last year's sluggish trading.

"We estimate £140m to be spent over the weekend and we are looking to go over a million people," it said.

Heavy snowfall has caused traffic chaos in many parts of the UK, and is expected to continue on Sunday.

After the oil price collapse of 2008, the subsequent rise to $80 this year convinced many that people that oil traders were anticipating a tight oil market with the economic recovery. Meanwhile, others felt that speculators were reacting to financial factors like the weak dollar rather than market fundamentals. The former were very much encouraged by the many advocates of “peak oil” who perceived a long chain of negative news and predictions as heralding the end of the oil age.

Here’s the reality: we are nowhere close to the end of the oil age.

A careful examination of the facts shows that most arguments about peak oil are based on anecdotal information, vague references and ignorance of how the oil industry goes about finding fields and extracting petroleum.

In fact, today’s oil market is similar to what we saw back in the 1980s, which saw an oil price spike, followed by a price collapse that persisted for years.

NIGERIAN TRUCK "ACCIDENT" KILLS MORE THAN 100

Up to 100 people have been killed after a runaway truck ploughed into a crowded market in Nigeria.

Officials said 55 people died, but a BBC reporter at the scene, in Kogi state, counted at least 100 corpses.

Kogi state police said the lorry hurtled down a hill at speed, smashing cars and motorcycles then crashing into the market, injuring up to 40 people.

Traffic accidents are common in Nigeria because vehicles and roads are badly maintained.

"I can only confirm that 55 people were killed. The driver of the truck lost control and ran into a group of people moving in a procession along the road," a senior police officer told AFP news agency.

Burned beyond recognition

Kogi state commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission, Yomi Asaniyan, said brake failure was the cause.

Declaring three days of mourning, Ibrahim Idris, the governor of Kogi state, expressed his sadness and offered to pay the medical bills of those injured.

Eyewitnesses told Nigeria's Sunday Trust newspaper that the market in Allo village in the Dekina area was filled to capacity when it was rammed by the lorry.

A number of vehicles caught fire, burning people beyond recognition. It is not yet clear whether the accident happened on Friday or Saturday.

Last week, more than 20 people burned to death when a bus carrying mourners to a funeral collided with a truck on a road in Oyo state, south-west Nigeria.

Nigerian militants attacked an oil pipeline early Saturday morning, breaking a tenuous cease-fire with the government over the long absence of its ill president.

The attack comes after President Umaru Yar'Adua held formal peace talks with the group and many militants put down their arms as part of a government amnesty. While the militants have broken cease-fires in the past, the attack highlights the Nigerian government's struggles with Yar'Adua's weeks-long absence as he tries to overcome a reportedly serious heart condition.

The most surprising thing about the failure of COP15 is that the MSM is surprised by the failure of COP15.

Of course there is a great deal of confusion - and even more spin - about the significance of the Copenhagen Declaration... but if one looks beyond the charade, I believe one will see true Realpolitik at work.

The fact is the oil producing nations, and China and India are not interested in reining in the economy.

Yesterday, Denmark enjoyed the lowest December temperature since 2000.

That was until today!

A look at the chart shows the record lows for November (1973), December (1981), January (1982), and February (1942) are relatively recent, and even Feb '42 was well into the Industrial Age.

(I do not recall the Wermacht complaining about Global Warming while they were bogged down on the Easter Front!)

Of course extreme temperatures may not be as useful as the Global Mean Temperature but - as informed readers already know- there really is no valid long term database of GMT - only fraud or extrapolation at best.

It is also interesting to note that satellite measurements of the temperature in the mesosphere have revealed no significant increase as a result of a supposed CO2 insulator---but there is evidence that mesopheric temperature reacts to Solar Tides...

Lawrence Solomon at the National Post writes about a topic that WUWT readers have known about for a long time: How Wikipedia’s green doctor rewrote 5,428 climate articles.

We’ve known for some time that Wikipedia can’t be trusted to provide unbiased climate information. Solomon starts off by talking about Climategate emails.

The emails also describe how the band plotted to rewrite history as well as science, particularly by eliminating the Medieval Warm Period, a 400 year period that began around 1000 AD.

The Climategate Emails reveal something else, too: the enlistment of the most widely read source of information in the world — Wikipedia — in the wholesale rewriting of this history.

He then focuses on RealClimate.org co-founder William Connolley, who has “touched” 5,428 Wikipedia articles with his unique brand of RC centric editing:

All told, Connolley created or rewrote 5,428 unique Wikipedia articles. His control over Wikipedia was greater still, however, through the role he obtained at Wikipedia as a website administrator, which allowed him to act with virtual impunity.

When Connolley didn’t like the subject of a certain article, he removed it — more than 500 articles of various descriptions disappeared at his hand.

When he disapproved of the arguments that others were making, he often had them barred — over 2,000 Wikipedia contributors who ran afoul of him found themselves blocked from making further contributions. Acolytes whose writing conformed to Connolley’s global warming views, in contrast, were rewarded with Wikipedia’s blessings.

In these ways, Connolley turned Wikipedia into the missionary wing of the global warming movement
