Is this a new low point for Greenie stupidity?

Seattle is known as a place where the rain never stops, but lately it's been snowing, and the roads have been icy. On Friday the result, as the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported, was a near-disaster:

Two Northwestern Trailways buses slid down the snow-covered cobblestones of East Thomas on Capitol Hill and smashed into each other, careening through a guardrail on Melrose Avenue East, 20 to 30 feet above Interstate 5.

Fortunately, the buses did not fall onto the highway below. They "came to rest with their front ends hanging over I-5."
It turns out there's a reason Seattle's roads are so icy. Today's Seattle Times reports:

There's snow and ice left on major arterials by design. "We're trying to create a hard-packed surface," said Alex Wiggins, chief of staff for the Seattle Department of Transportation. "It doesn't look like anything you'd find in Chicago or New York." . . .

The icy streets are the result of Seattle's refusal to use salt, an effective ice-buster used by the state Department of Transportation and cities accustomed to dealing with heavy winter snows. "If we were using salt, you'd see patches of bare road because salt is very effective," Wiggins said. "We decided not to utilize salt because it's not a healthy addition to Puget Sound."

Puget Sound is a saltwater estuary. That's right--Seattle officials are making their roads more dangerous because they're trying to keep salt out of the ocean.

Mormon hatred

Another gusher of Leftist hate below. He attacks Mormons, a tiny minority in California, for their support of a California constitutional amendment that blocks homosexual marriage. Most analysts say that blacks and Hispanics were the real muscle behind the "Anti" vote so I guess that some of us have wondered why the Mormons were singled out by lots of Leftists on this occasion.

As you read below however, you see that he has always despised Mormons ("money-soaked", "smug self-containment" etc.). Leftists are just full of hatred for anybody who is happily getting on with their lives and any excuse will do to let some of the hatred out:

"It has to do with the passage of Proposition 8, that California trash that befouled an otherwise heavenly election. Specifically, it has to do with the Mormon Church, which swung its considerable clout to the travesty of denying gays the respectability and dignity that Mormons have spent well over a century trying to get for themselves. And which now, they themselves should be denied.

That's right, you heard me. The Mormon Church has become a hateful bully and should be treated as such. Other people voted for Proposition 8, true, and much has been made of how black voters probably ensured its passage. But black voters aren't a money-soaked, monolithic, corporatized, sanctimonious monstrosity that poured $20 million into the effort, are they?

It's frustrating that there's not much we can do. We could refuse to spend our money in Mormon-owned businesses. We could refuse to vote for Mormon politicians. We could challenge their religious tax exemptions and I would love it if someone asked some serious questions as to why there's always a damn Mormon seminary within a stone's throw of nearly every high school from here to Salt Lake City.

But frankly, those of us who grew up around the smug self-containment of our Mormon neighbors will realize none of that would work and, in fact, would probably only make them more smugly self-contained. The Mormon Church has always luxuriated in their history of being picked on.

Yet after this orchestrated disdain for the happiness and emotional well-being of their fellow citizens, my fear of saying what I really think of them (that variety of cowardice I spoke of earlier) is a thing of the past. I am now free to be as unaccepting of them as they are of gays. There is an old tradition among rigid religions-I believe the Mormons still practice it on occasion-called "shunning." Now that they have placed themselves on the wrong side of both morality and freedom, I shun them. Better yet, I excommunicate them. They don't exist to me. Their marriages don't matter. Their happiness and emotional well-being don't matter. Let us move on, around them, as though they weren't there. Let us excise them from our thoughts and our hearts.

But listen, we would never want to be quite as intolerant as them, would we? And in that spirit, should they ever renounce the evil in their hierarchy and escape the sin of their dogma, we must let them know they are always welcome back, here in the fold of America.

"Sin of their dogma"? I thought that there was no such thing as right and wrong to a Leftist? I wonder where he gets his notion of sin from? Romans chapter 1 tells us that homosexuality is a sin. I guess he just pulls his notion of sin out of his butt.

A MOSQUE NEAR THE NORTH POLE

Guess where the latest plan is to build a mosque?

While the North Pole’s landscape may evoke images of igloos and barren snow fields, the crescent moon and minaret will soon vie for their place in Norway’s Arctic thanks to a Saudi businessman’s donation to build the region’s first mosque.

A Saudi businessman has donated 20 million Krone ($2.78 million) to build the first mosque in the Arctic region, near the northern part of Norway, according to a news report published by a local Saudi newspaper.

It's just like Norway to do something like this, and allow the House of Saud to build a foothold for the Ummah in a district of theirs.

A 67-year-old Iraqi who has been living in the United States since the 1980s pleaded guilty to a federal conspiracy charge yesterday and admitted that he secretly served for more than a decade as an agent of the regime of Saddam Hussein.

Saubhe Jassim Al-Dellemy, who came to the United States as a student and became a permanent resident in 2000, was identified as an agent through documents recovered after the U.S. invasion of Iraq, prosecutors said. The recovery of such records has led to charges against at least a dozen Iraqi agents, according to the Justice Department.

Given the code name "Adam," Dellemy provided information to Iraq and its intelligence agency about the identities and activities of people and groups opposed to Hussein and his government, according to a factual summary that accompanied his plea agreement.

All those years Dellemy has been living in the United States, and for what? To enjoy the freedoms here? Only so far as those freedoms allowed him to subvert the United States.

This story does make one wonder how many more spies are among us, spies having come in as students and staying to do something else entirely.

And I'm willing to bet that Dellemy's clientele at the restaurant he ran thought he was a wonderful guy, too.

Putin warns of higher prices as gas-OPEC, GECF, meets in Moscow

A Red/Black Alliance of Russia, Venezuela, and the Islamic nations of OPEC are coming together to attempt to control the world's oil prices.

Venezuela said on Tuesday that the fledgling Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) shares the same principles as the OPEC oil cartel, which seeks to influence global crude prices.

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin warned on Tuesday that consumer countries faced higher gas prices, as a fledgling forum that has raised fears of an OPEC-style gas cartel met to coordinate policy.

 

The Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) groups Russia, the world’s biggest gas producer, with other gas-rich states such as Iran and Qatar and 11 other gas-exporting countries.

 

In a keynote address at the forum’s meeting in Moscow, Putin said that higher costs of exploration, production and transport meant that the era of cheap gas prices was ending.

 

"The expenses necessary for developing fields are rising sharply, and this means that despite the current problems in finances the era of cheap energy resources, of cheap gas, is of course coming to an end,"Putin said.

 

Putin’s comments come amid a weeks-long standoff between Ukraine and Russia over Kiev’s debts to Russian energy giant Gazprom and the price it should pay after the New Year.

 

Gazprom supplies a quarter of the European Unions gas, mostly via Ukraine.

 

Forum officials were at pains to emphasize that the purpose of the annual meeting was to finalize and approve a charter for the body rather than create an OPEC-style cartel to fix prices.

 

"The goal of the meeting is to transform it into a more organized format. We expect such a decision to be taken. This is a gas Non-OPEC," said the deputy chairman of Gazprom, Alexander Medvedev.

 

Referring to the indexing of gas prices to oil prices, Qatar Energy Minister Abdullah Bin Hamad Al Attiyah added: "The gas price is still related to the oil price, we are not discussing how to create a price formula."

 

"It’s not a cartel. We are defending the interests of our countries, that’s all," said Venezuelan Energy Minister Rafael Ramirez.

 

But he added: "We see in this forum an opportunity to build a solid organization, which has in its foundation the same principles that gave birth to OPEC."

 

Members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) meet regularly to agree their production quotas in order to influence the price of crude oil on global markets.

 

But analysts say that a cartel for natural gas makes far less sense, since gas exports generally require the construction of capital-intensive pipelines and contracts are signed over long-term periods.

 

Oil exports, on the other hand, are generally based on a spot market price to the barrel for delivery within relatively short timeframes.

 

"There is a serious difference between the oil market and the gas market, which renders the idea of the gas cartel superfluous," said Vyacheslav Bunkov, an analyst with Aton investment group.

 

Putin last month rejected as "baseless" claims by critics that the forum would act like OPEC and cooperate to fix prices.

 

The forum, whose creation dates back to 2001, groups Algeria, Bolivia, Brunei, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Libya, Malaysia, Nigeria, Qatar, Russia, Trinidad and Tobago, the United Arab Emirates and Venezuela.

 

Equatorial Guinea and Norway are attending the Moscow meeting as observers.

 

Five of these countries between them control nearly two-thirds of the world’s gas reserves and account for 42 percent of its production -- Russia, Iran, Qatar, Venezuela and Algeria.

So much Christian music celebrates Israel that I fail to see how anybody brought up in the Christian tradition can be anything other than Pro-Israel. But there are even many Jews who are either indifferent to or antagonistic in various ways to Israel so I suppose I should not be surprised at people who can sing one thing in Church and say very differently out of church. There are even whole Christian denominations that are anti-Israel, including one Methodist outfit, if I remember rightly. How can they not know that both the "old" and "new" parts of their holy book were written by Jews -- and that their saviour was an Israeli Jew?

An outpouring of hate from the Left

When rich Zionists lose a piece of their portfolios, especially to the guile of one of their own, it is a delight.

The press was first to report Madoff's pilfering of the Robert Lappin "Charitable" Foundation, an organization whose "mission is helping to keep our children Jewish, thus reversing the trend of assimilation and intermarriage." If the reader has trouble seeing the blatant racism here, substitute "White" for "Jewish" and imagine it was the stated goal of the David Duke Charitable Foundation.

While Mr. Burston found Madoff's bilking of "fellow Jews, even Holocaust survivors" particularly outrageous, there are those who find divine justice in seeing one fraud defraud another. Elie Wiesel and his Foundation for Humanity would certainly qualify. Here is a man who has made millions peddling his narrative on the deaths of Jews in World War II; his novel, Night, is mandatory reading for most high school students; questioning it in any way invites charges of "anti-Semitism" and "Holocaust Denial." He has been feted by Presidents and holds dozens of honorary degrees. If there were a CEO of the Holocaust Industry (a term coined by Norman Finkelstein), surely it would be The Great Weasel.

WSJ: FBI probe into Bernard Madoff targets key lieutenant

INVESTIGATORS probing the alleged fraud carried out by Bernard Madoff are looking at a key lieutenant at the firm and have issued a subpoena to the accountant who audited the firm's financial statements, seeking documents going back to 2000, people familiar with the matter said.

Authorities are trying to determine who helped Mr Madoff carry out what they say appears to be at least a 30-year scheme that may have caused at least $US50 billion ($73 billion) in losses.

They are seeking information from the accounting firm that handled Mr Madoff's audits for decades and are examining the role of Frank DiPascali, who dealt with client accounts and worked at Mr Madoff's firm for more than 30 years, said a person familiar with the matter.

"If you wanted anything, a new account, money in, money out, you called Frank," said one Madoff investor. "Nothing moved in that office without him, operationally," this person said.

Marc Mukasey, a lawyer for Mr DiPascali, said: "Frank DiPascali would like to see investors get back whatever they can."

He declined to comment further.

After Mr Madoff's arrest on December 11, investigators from the Securities and Exchange Commission showed up at the Madoff firm's headquarters in Manhattan and questioned Mr DiPascali.

He "responded evasively" and his answers were "incomprehensible," according to an SEC memorandum reviewed by The Wall Street Journal and a person familiar with the matter. He told the SEC he didn't know who was responsible for the parts of the investment-advisory firm that cleared and settled trades, the SEC memo said.

Pope Benedict XVI has said that saving humanity from homosexual or transsexual behaviour is just as important as saving the rainforest from destruction.

He explained that defending God's creation is not limited to saving the environment, but also protecting man from self-destruction.

The pope was delivering his end-of-year address to senior Vatican staff.

His words, later released to the media, emphasised his total rejection of gender theory.

Pope Benedict XVI warned that gender theory blurs the distinction between male and female and could thus lead to the "self-destruction" of the human race.

The fate of the Jews -- continued

I trod on thin ice recently in my reflections about the history and fate of Jews. But despite my reflections getting a couple of thousand hits, I got only one really hostile response -- so I am encouraged to continue the discussion. I am however not going to put it up here as the owner of this blog disagrees with it and disapproves of it.

People Making Money Is Not Chavez's Idea Of Progress

You can't express the message of "Socialism" better than Chavez does here. A mall is being built. People will have fun. They will spend money. They will enjoy clothing, food, and other goods, and many other people will make money, have jobs, and grow careers.

But, Chavez says this is not his idea of progress.

Chavez orders halt to construction of Caracas mall, says building to be expropriated

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) -- President Hugo Chavez ordered construction halted on a major shopping mall in Caracas on Sunday, saying the government will expropriate the unfinished building.

The Venezuelan leader said it would be out of line with his government's socialist vision to allow the new Sambil mall to take up precious urban real estate -- and that unbridled consumerism isn't his idea of progress either.

Chavez said the mall, scheduled to open in La Candelaria district in downtown Caracas next year, would severely clog an area that already is so crowded "not a soul fits."

The hulking concrete and brick structure takes up an entire city block and according to the Sambil Web site was to include 273 shops.

"We're going to expropriate that and turn it into a hospital -- I don't know -- a school, a university," Chavez said to applause during his Sunday television and radio program, "Hello, President."

Constructora Sambil, the company building the mall, did not immediately respond to requests for comment. It operates Sambil malls in cities across Venezuela, including another vast shopping center in Caracas.

"How are we going to create socialism turning over vital public spaces to Sambil?" said Chavez, who has nationalized Venezuela's largest phone company, electric utilities and oil fields.

The president also has urged Venezuelans to shed their materialism and their taste for designer clothes, sport utility vehicles, Scotch whisky and plastic surgery.

Chavez often urges Venezuelans to rethink their values, and the timing of his announcement appeared to be no accident -- just as Christmas shoppers packed malls elsewhere in Caracas.

He didn't preach against the buying frenzy in general, but did say at another point in his speech that "Christ was a socialist."

Consumerism has flourished in Venezuela in recent years, with the economy awash with cash and windfall oil earnings rolling in. Malls are often packed, and new shopping centers have been sprouting up quickly.

The president did not say how much the government might pay the mall's owners in compensation.

Must not joke about Obama (again)

We read:

"Florida Politics has, thankfully, collected a series of absolutely shocking statements that shows Palins peeps for who they are - racists. Here is just a few of the examples that they are keeping:

Al Austin, a high-level Republican fundraiser from Tampa, sent an e-mail to his list of his political contacts Wednesday containing a joke that refers to the assassination of Barack Obama. Is that funny? Well here's the alleged "joke":

The joke concerns a group of school children discussing the definition of "tragedy," as opposed to "great loss" or "accident." The punchline says that if an airplane carrying Obama and his wife was blown up, "it certainly wouldn't be a great loss, and it probably wouldn't be an accident either."

Israel's government is supposedly getting ready, I presume, for a ground strike, not just simply an air strike, on Hamas in Gaza. But don't be sure if they'll be convincing about this.

Egypt is trying to undermine efforts to do it already. They say they're angry at Hamas for ending the "truce", as if there ever was one in the first place, yet they warn Israel against a "devastating" assault on Gaza. Believe me, Egypt is not improving, and I wouldn't be surprised if in another decade, they'll collapse into a worse situation once again.

OBAMA'S CABINET: THE 1/2 GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY

Obama's cabinet picks provide a fascinating glimpse into how he will govern and what he will try to accomplish.

1 - Obama selected Holder to be USAG because of one thing: he's black and Obama wanted to appoint the first black. This is identity politics and groupism and proves that Obama will continue the collectivist approach to social problems.

2 - The economics team is an experienced group of center-left economists who will do okay - not what we conservatives want, but a lot better than we might have gotten. Volcker, and Summers are solid.

Obama will let them do what they have to do to get the financial system rolling again. Summers won't oppose eventually raising taxes to Clintonian heights.

3 - The national security team are also centrists - but Scowcroftian; they will pursue dialog, appeasement and what they call "realism" - AND TOSS ISRAEL UNDER THE BUS A SOON AS THEY CAN.

4 - The team which will run the LEFT-WING departments - HHS, Education, Labor, the EPA and his science advisor are all HARDCORE LEFTIES.

This is where Obama will pursue an aggressive left-wing agenda.

British hospital bosses to limit doctors’ hours -- by hiring more bureaucrats!

This must be a high-point of socialist stupidity. They are hiring more bureaucrats in order to reduce the hours that doctors work. As if the person making up the rosters at the moment cannot simply make them up differently! It is more doctors, not more bureaucrats that are needed. So how about spending the money instead on hiring more doctors?


The NHS is appointing a new layer of managers to ensure that doctors do not work too hard. Hospitals say the bureaucrats are needed to ensure compliance with European legislation which says that, from August next year, no doctors will be allowed to work more than 48 hours a week. At the moment, junior doctors can work up to 56 hours.

Scarborough and North East Yorkshire Trust appointed a “working time directive project manager” in 2006-7. Mid Essex Hospital Services NHS Trust is advertising for one at a salary of up to 44,527 pounds. A spokeswoman said the purpose was to “redesign roles and rotas in preparation for compliance next year”.

Last week the European parliament voted to end Britain’s opt-out. Unless a compromise is reached in the European Union’s council of ministers, this will mean doctors cannot work longer hours even if they want to. The Royal College of Surgeons has issued a warning that the NHS will not be able to cope when hours are cut next year.

No, Christ isn't allowed in Christmas

6th-grader's teacher says Jesus can't be mentioned in holiday poem:

"A public school teacher in Mississippi marked down an eleven-year-old's Christmas poem assignment and told the boy to rewrite it because he used the word "Jesus," which, the instructor explained, is a name not allowed in school.

Liberty Counsel, a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing religious freedom, reports that sixth-grader Andrew White of Hattiesburg, Miss., chose to write the poem on the assignment "What Christmas means to me." After White turned in his rough draft, however, his teacher circled the word "Jesus" and deducted a point from his grade. The teacher then explained that he needed to rewrite the poem without the offending word.

When White's parents questioned the teacher, Liberty Counsel reports, they received a response email explaining, "[Andrew] and another child did a poem about Christ. I know we can't discuss these type [sic] of things in school so I asked the two of them to do another poem of their choice."

Mathew D. Staver, founder of Liberty Counsel and dean of Liberty University School of Law, expressed dismay that despite many legal clarifications on the issue, there are still educationl officials that mistakenly believe students can't speak of their faith at school. "Some educators need education that the story of Christmas is not banned from public schools," Staver said in a statement.

The principal at White's Thames Elementary School agreed with Staver. After White's parents encouraged Andrew to turn in his first, unedited poem, Principal Carrie Hornsby changed the boy's grade to a 100 and conceded that there was nothing improper in using Jesus' name. Hornsby also coordinated a mailing to all the school's parents, explaining that students' religious expression is permitted under federal guidelines.
