The opposition in Kyrgyzstan says it is setting up a "people's government" after deadly clashes left dozens dead.

The opposition said Prime Minister Daniyar Usenov had agreed to resign but President Kurmanbek Bakiyev has yet to do so.

The whereabouts of President Bakiyev are not clear but reports say that he has flown out of the capital, Bishkek.

Protests at rising prices, corruption and the arrest of opposition leaders had erupted in three cities.

Kyrgyzstan is a strategically important Central Asian state and houses a key US military base that supplies forces in Afghanistan. Russia also has a base there.

... Russian PM Vladimir Putin denied that Moscow had played any role in the unrest, saying it was a "domestic affair" and that there should be
"restraint".

Large-scale protests on Wednesday appeared to overthrow the government of Kyrgyzstan, an important American ally in Central Asia. Government officials said at least 41 people had been killed in bloody fighting between riot police and demonstrators in the capital of Bishkek and elsewhere in the country.

While the opposition declared that it was forming its own government, President Kurmanbek Bakiyev left Bishkek in the presidential plane, though it was not clear whether he was leaving the country or heading to another Kyrgyz city. Earlier in the day, the police used live ammunition, tear gas and stun grenades against a crowd of thousands that massed in front of the presidential office in Bishkek, according to witness accounts.

Barry Rubin at the Gloria Center writes about how the former Canadian diplomat Robert Fowler has resorted to blaming Israel for middle eastern problems:

Yet beyond George Packer, a generally fair-minded New Yorker columnist, the panel is stacked with radicals and their friends:

Tariq Ramadan may be lauded as a Muslim "reformer," but his type of reform is closer to the Islamist version laid out by his grandfather, Muslim Brotherhood founder Hasan al-Banna. When one removes his carefully crafted doublespeak about tolerance and diversity, a disturbing portrait of the Oxford professor emerges: Ramadan finds nothing to reject in al-Banna's supremacist ideas; he has been accused of links to terrorists; he has justified bombings in Israel, Russia, and Iraq as legitimate resistance; he went no further than calling for a "moratorium" against stoning while the practice is debated; he supports restrictions on the public lives of women; he demands that integration take place on Muslims' terms; he led a boycott against the 2008 Turin Book Fair because it honored Israel; and on and on. He is no moderate; he is a master of taqiyya.

Dalia Mogahed, another panelist, runs the Gallup Center for Muslim Studies and serves on Obama's Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships, where she arrogates to herself the role of "convey[ing] … what it is Muslims want." RIFQA BARY NEEDS ASYLUM GRANT, BUT PARENTS WANT TO PREVENT IT

The AP/NY Times is reporting on this case. Aside from the predictable biases, it seems that the parents are still trying their utter reprehensive to sabotage her ability to get an asylum grant:

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- A teenage girl who converted to Christianity and ran away from home is being blocked by her Muslim parents from fighting the possibility of deportation, her attorney told a judge Monday in an ongoing custody dispute.

Rifqa Bary, 17, who fled home last year and stayed with a Florida minister whom she met on Facebook, is an illegal immigrant and does not want to be returned to her native Sri Lanka because she fears being harmed or killed by Muslim extremists.

Notice how they don't actually mention that the only reason she's in the US illegally is because her parents are too. Or that her own parents are said extremists.

Bary and her parents, Mohamed and Aysha Bary, have agreed to follow a counseling plan drawn up by a county child welfare agency to try to resolve the family's conflict. It requires both sides to work with individual counselors and to try to attend join counseling.

But a face-to-face meeting remains unlikely any time soon.

Jim Zorn, a children's services attorney, told the judge that Bary continues to believe that a reconciliation with her parents is impossible. Bary's counselor has indicated that contact with her parents would be premature, he said.

Bary has also complained that her parents have not responded to an emotional letter sent to them through a counselor that explains why their relationship broke down, Lloyd said.

And doesn't that tell that they've clearly stigmatized her and have no intention of respecting her wishes? It doesn't take too much to guess that they're the ones unwilling to undergo counseling. Exactly why she needs refugee status approval.

Here's something that, unlike the al-Durah hoax, is now being corrected very quickly (JPOST):

Muhammad Farmawi, a 15-year-old said to have been shot dead by the IDF during Land Day riots in Gaza on Tuesday, was reported on Saturday to be alive and well.

The Palestinian Ma’an news agency said Farmawi’s mother was surprised to find her son alive four days after he was allegedly killed. His death had been confirmed by medical professionals in the Gaza Strip.

The IDF, however, firmly denied allegations that Palestinians had been killed during demonstrations on Land Day, which marks the 34th anniversary of the killing of six Galilee Arabs during protests against land confiscations.

According to the Ma’an report, Farmawi arrived in Gazan Rafah on Friday alive and well. He was discovered to be part of a group of 17 Palestinian youths who were arrested after trying to infiltrate Egypt via smuggling tunnels. Gaza police facilitated the boys’ return to their homes.

There's something mighty confusing here - medical pros "confirmed" his death? Wouldn't there have to be a real stiff in custody to verify this is true or not?

There should also be some criticism here of how these youngsters are endangering themselves all for the sake of nothing but hate. But there isn't.

In a major victory for environmental advocates, New York State has ruled that outmoded cooling technology at the Indian Point nuclear power plant kills so many Hudson River fish, and consumes and contaminates so much water, that it violates the federal Clean Water Act.

The decision is a blow to the plant’s owner, the Entergy Corporation, which now faces the prospect of having to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to build stadium-size cooling towers, or risk that Indian Point’s two operating reactors — which supply 30 percent of the electricity used by New York City and Westchester County — could be forced to shut down.

... Alex Matthiessen, president of the environmental group Riverkeeper, said it was conceivable that Entergy could spend the money to retrofit its cooling system and then reapply to the state. But that would cause a huge delay, he added.

“For all we know, this is it — the beginning of the end,” he said.

JIHADISTS AND LEFTISTS STAGE COORDINATED RIOTS IN ISRAEL

The IDF and other security forces on Friday quelled several simultaneous riots by Palestinians and left-wing activists on one side and settlers on the other inJerusalem and in the West Bank.

Dozens of left-wing activists and Palestinians descended on the Shepherd Hotel in east Jerusalem’s Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood to protest what they call the “Judaization” of Jerusalem.

The hotel, owned by Jewish American millionaire Irwin Moskowitz, was rented out to the Border Police for many years, but a recent approval to renovate the building and build Jewish housing units there prompted American condemnation and turned the site into a hot spot for protests.

In Friday’s riots, several demonstrators were wounded and others were detained.

Elsewhere in Sheikh Jarrah, left-wing activists held a protest against the moving into the neighborhood of several Jewish families who entered homes owned by Jews from which Palestinian families were evicted by court order.

Also on Friday, several settlers from Yitzhar, near Nablus, held a parade in the Palestinian village of Hawara, south of the city, to protest the wounds sustained by Shmulik Cohen, a Yitzhar resident who was badly hurt when his car was pelted with stones.

Border police officers arrived at the scene when the residents of Hawara began stoning the settlers. The Yitzhar residents protested what they called thesecurity forces’ “feebleness” in dealing with Palestinian rioters.

The military said some of the settlers threw stones at the soldiers, but that the demonstration was dispersed with no incident.

In Nabi Salah, northwest of Ramallah, Palestinians and left-wing protesters were dispersed by the military. Left-wing activists claimed that two men were wounded by rubber bullets, and others said the IDF used live ammunition.

The military flatly rejected the claim, saying it used only rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse the protest.

Several hundred protesters gathered in Ni’ilin and Bil’in, two Palestinian villages near the West Bank security barrier where protests are held every Friday. The military last month declared the area where the protests take place a closed military zone on Fridays, but the protesters were not deterred. They stoned soldiers, who responded with tear gas.
