OBAMA'S CORRUPT DEALINGS WITH CHICAGO DEVELOPER REZKO

WE BLOGGED THIS TWO YEARS AGO. NO ONE WAS INTERESTED THEN.

OMABAMGATE CONTINUED: THE REZKO LAND DEAL (12/17/06)
WASH POST/VIA MALKIN:
In June 2005, in what Obama now describes as a "boneheaded" mistake, Obama and Rezko's wife bought adjacent properties on Chicago's South Side, closing the deals on the same day.

Seven months later, wanting a bigger yard for his $1.65 million house, Obama bought a slice of the Rezko property for
$104,500.
"Bonehead deal"?! From the smartest man in the democrat party!? YEAH, RIGHT! Obama's a crook. (The photo on the left shows Rezko and his mouthpiece leaving court after pleading not guilty to a recent indictment. Rezko is on the right.)
WE FOLLOWED UP WITH THIS, 9 MONTHS AGO - IN APRIL 2007:
OBAMA: A CORRUPT CROOK IN DEEP WITH A CORRUPT CHICAGO REAL ESTATE DEVELOPER
CHICAGO SUN-TIMES (VIA PAJAMAS MEDIA):
U.S. Sen. Barack Obama said Monday he accepted campaign contributions from Antoin "Tony'' Rezko without knowing that Rezko was a slumlord with problem buildings in the state Senate district Obama represented at the time.

"Should I have known these buildings were in a state of disrepair? My answer would be that it wasn't brought to my attention,'' Obama, who's seeking the Democratic presidential nomination, said at a South Side campaign stop.

His comments came in response to a Chicago Sun-Times report that he had done previously undisclosed legal work between 1995 and 1998 on a series of troubled low-income-housing deals involving Rezmar Corp., owned by the indicted businessman.

Obama worked for a small Chicago law firm -- Davis Miner Barnhill & Galland -- between 1993 and 2004. The firm worked on deals that got $43 million in government funds for 15 apartment buildings Rezmar rehabilitated with not-for-profit community groups. Four of the buildings ended up being foreclosed on.
OBAMA IS OBVIOUSLY LYING.

REZKO AND OBAMA ARE VERY CLOSE: REZKO HELPED OBAMA BUY HIS MANSION - JUST A FEW YEARS AGO. WITHOUT REZKO, OBAMA COULD NOT HAVE BOUGHT HIS HOME.
After graduating from Harvard Law, the then utterly unknown Obama was contacted by a bright aggressive NYC literary agent who thought - because of Obama's mixed heritage and modest background - BHO Jr might have an interesting story to tell. They signed a contract. After much work, the agent sold Obama Jr's book. It was Obama Jr's first.

After Obama Jr's pretty and pretty well-received convention speech in 2004 - (and before he was elected to the Senate) - he broke this contract with this agent, (the one who picked him up out of nowhere and got him his first book deal), in order to sign with a bigger agent, (to whom he was introduced by perjurer Bill Clinton).

Instead of being loyal to the agent who helped put him on the map, he dumped her the first chance he got, and jumped on to the roster of a bigger bigshot - who didn't have to break a sweat in order to sell Obama Jr's SECOND book! (Barack Hussein Obama Jr. eventually agreed to a settlement for breaking his contract with his first agent.)
OBAMA: NOTHING BUT A SMOOTH-TALKING LEFT-WING CROOK.

WHICH IS WHY HE'S THE PERFECT STANDARD-BEARER FOR THE DEMOCRAT PARTY!

(AND WHY THESE REVELATIONS DON'T SEEM TO BOTHER ANY DEMS!)

GLOBAL COOLING KILLS 11 IN PAKISTAN

THE PAKISTANIS AIN'T JUST AFFLICTED WITH JIHADOMANIACS; THEY'RE ALSO GETTING SOME UNUSUALLY COLD WEATHER:
Heavy rains, snow claim 11 lives

ISLAMABAD: Heavy rains, snow and near-freezing temperatures during the weekend killed at least 11 people across Pakistan, a Pakistani report said yesterday.

Inclement weather, especially at higher elevations in the country’s northern areas, was expected to continue this week, the Pakistan Meteorological Department said on its website.

The Urdu-language Express newspaper reported that six people died due to cold weather in the Sahiwal and Okara districts of Punjab province, where the temperature fell to 7 degrees in mountainous areas.

In Balochistan province, five members of a family died when heavy rains caused the roof of their house to collapse, the newspaper said.

In Pakistan’s high-elevation northern region, many towns were cut off because of avalanches.

In the Leepa valley, some 40,000 people were cut off because avalanches had blocked roads leading out of the area.

  • IF MAN-MADE GASES CAUSED GLOBAL WARMING THEN THIS COULD NOT BE HAPPENING.
  • YET PAKISTAN AND EUROPE AND CANADA ARE HAVING THEIR COLDEST AND SNOWIEST WINTERS IN DECADES.
  • RIGHT AFTER THE SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE HAD IT'S COLDEST AND SNOWIEST WINTERS IN DECADES.
AGW IS TOTAL BS.

A MESSAGE FOR DEMOCRATS: IF YOU OPPOSE THE "WAR ON TERROR", THEN YOU SHOULD VOTE FOR RUDY

The Democrats and the Left around the world often say there is no global war on terror, and they also often say that they hate the term as mush as they hate the term islamofascism.

They deride us hawks as warmongers and blame us for... well er um the war on terror.

In the UK, the left-wing Labour government has gone as far as banning government officials from using the words War on Terror and islam when dealing with, well er um... global jihad.

People on the left prefer the law enforcement model; they argue that global jihad is containable (as they argue Saddam was) and that the jihadists are not as bad as the USSR was and that they can be countered using law enforcement.

(Forget for the moment that they also fight tooth and nail to give the jihadists every single legal tool in the book, and that they fight just as hard to hamstring law enforcement while they're at it!)

WELL: If they really REALLY believe this then they should NOT vote for Hillary or Obama or Edwards or Kucinich or anyone BUT RUDY GIULIANI.

After all, nobody in the entire USA has anti-crime law enforcement cred's like Rudy: he cleaned up the carting industry, the fruit and vegetable markets and the fish market (all dominated by Organized Crime Syndicates) and also made the streets and the subways safe.

YUP: if you think the GWOT is a law enforcement issue vote Rudy.

Or content yourself with lesser qualified "enforcers" or... your own hypocrisy.

MCCAIN IS ONE OF OUR BEST HAWK SENATORS...

THAT'S WHY WE SHOULD KEEP HIM THERE!

WHY CONSERVATIVES IN NEW HAMPSHIRE MUST VOTE FOR MITT

NEW HAMPSHIRE IS A BIG PRIZE WHICH WILL CONFER A LOT OF MOMENTUM TO ONE OR TWO CANDIDATES.

IT CAN CAN ONLY BE WON BY ONE OF TWO LEADING CANDIDATES: MCCAIN OR MITT.

AS A CONSERVATIVE, I WOULD RATHER SEE MITT WIN. AND HERE'S WHY:

It's simple: McCain is a GREAT hawk, but NO CONSERVATIVE.

McCain voted against the Bush tax cuts, and was the key fella behind campaign finance reform and the unsuccessful effort to give illegal immigrants amnesty. He also is a follower of Al Gore and his Church of man-made global warming.

REPEAT: McCain is no conservative.

SO... to stop McCain FROM WINNING NH, the conservatives need to unite behind one guy - the one guy with a chance in NH, and that's Mitt.

It ain't Fred. It ain't Hunter.

And Rudy and Hucksterbee are not so conservative either.

Maybe the southern conservatives can reject Mitt and vote for Fred - BUT WE GOTTA GET THERE FIRST.

That's why I want New Hampshire conservatives to vote Mitt.

NOW... as far as Mitt being a phony or a flip-flopper: I JUST DON'T BUY IT!

I say people change their views and do become more conservative.

I DID. I was once a leftie pro-choice dove. Now I am a conservative pro-life hawk.

Mitt changed too.

AS DID REAGAN.

Remember, Reagan was an FDR Democrat lib until 1964!

It would have been unfair to call Reagan a flip-flopper in 1964 - when he endorsed Goldwater and gave the speech - (RENDEZVOUS WITH DESTINY) - which made him the leader of the conservative movement and eventually made him president.

It would be wrong to quote a speech given by liberal Reagan in 1948 and compare it to the conservative Reagan in 1964 (or later) and call him a phony.

BUT THIS IS WHAT PEOPLE ARE DOING TO MITT.

They're looking at speeches he gave in 1992, and saying he's STILL a lib.

But we don't have to look at his old speeches.

Mitt has a record of governing.

And Mitt governed as a conservative.

And his extraordinary leadership and management skills in private enterprise make him an ideal protector of the freemarket -and individual liberty.

CONSERVATIVE NEW HAMPSHIRITES: PLEASE VOTE FOR MITT.

Please go to his website and watch his position videos - HIT THE ISSUES TAB AND WATCH THEM ALL!

You'll see that his positions are the most cogent, clear - AND CONSERVATIVE.

MORE IDIOTIC ALARMISM AND CLASS WARFARE FROM KRUGMAN

KRUGMAN:
"... for 30 years American politics has been dominated by a political movement practicing Robin-Hood-in-reverse, giving unto those that hath while taking from those who don't."
FOR THIRTY YEARS!? 30?! THREE DECADES!?

  • YOU'DA THUNK THE POOR WOULDA RUN OUTTA MONEY DECADES AGO!
  • WHERE DO THE POOR KEEP MAKING ALL THIS MONEY IN ORDER TO KEEP THE RICH WEALTHY!?!?!?
KRUGMAN IS OF COURSE IDIOTIC.
  • IN FACT, IT WAS THE "GREAT SOCIETY" AND THE WELFARE STATE WHICH FAILED THE POOR.
  • AND IT WAS THE REAGAN REVOLUTION WHICH SAVED THEM AND THE MIDDLE CLASS AND THE WEALTHY!
AND AS MITT SAID LAST NIGHT, YOU CAN'T ATTACK WAGE-PAYERS AND EXPECT IT TO BENEFIT THE WAGE-EARNERS.
  • KRUGMAN IS DEMAGOGUING, AND TOEING THE POPULIST - IF NOT MARXIST LINE.
  • THE PROBLEM IS THAT HAYEK PROVED MARX WRONG.
  • AS DID REAGAN AND THATCHER .
  • AS DO CHINA AND INDIA - AND EASTERN EUROPE.

KRUGMAN AND THE DEMOCRATS AND THE ENTIRE LEFT ARE ON THE WRONG SIDE OF HISTORY.

AND... BETWEEN US AND OUR DESTINY.

THINGS HEATING UP IN PAKISTAN'S TRIBAL REGION

BBC:
Pakistan tribal elders shot dead

Gunmen in Pakistan have shot dead eight pro-government tribal leaders in the troubled South Waziristan region on Afghanistan's border, officials say.

The tribesmen were killed in two separate attacks on Sunday night and early Monday, a security official said.

Three of the men died in Wana, the region's main town, while the others were shot dead at their homes in Shkai, a town north of Wana, he said.

South Waziristan is a known stronghold of Taleban and al-Qaeda militants.

The region has been at the centre of fighting between the army and the militants in recent months.

Gunmen stormed the office of Taleban commander Maulavi Nazir in Wana on Sunday night and killed three of his supporters and wounded four others, officials said.

They said five people were killed in the nearby Shkai area in another attack on the office of Commander Khanan, who is loyal to Mullah Nazir.

Officials say they suspect the attackers to be Uzbek militants, who are opposed to Mullah Nazir.

Although a Taleban commander, Mullah Nazir recently fought foreign militants with the backing of Pakistani government troops.

Reports from Wana say the attacks may be in retaliation for an incident last month in which a suspected Uzbek militant was trapped and killed by Commander Khanan's men in the neighbouring North West Frontier Province district.

  • AL QAEDA IS UNDER INCREASING PRESSURE.
  • I FEEL THEY ARE GONNA BE SMASHED AND SOON.

STAY TUNED.

OBAMA - "THE COWARDLY LIAR": ONCE SAID HE KNEW SURGE WOULD WORK; TWICE SAID IT WOULD FAIL, AND ALSO CLAIMED THE DEM-DOVES WERE WHY IT SUCCEEDED!

NRO/CORNER/CLIFF MAY:
at the debate in New Hampshire Saturday night he [OBAMA] said:
Now, I had no doubt — and I said at the time, when I opposed the surge, that given how wonderfully our troops perform, if we place 30,000 more troops in there, then we would see an improvement in the security situation and we would see a reduction in the violence.
But a year ago this month, on ABC’s Nightline, Obama said
The problem we have is Shia and Sunni are unwilling to compromise and arrive at the sort of accommodations that would lead to stability. And in the absence of that, 20,000 troops is not gonna make a difference.
He said almost the same thing on Larry King’s show:
But I did not see anything in [President Bush’s] speech or anything in the run-up to the speech that provides evidence that an additional 15,000 to 20,000 more U.S. troops is going to make a significant dent in the sectarian violence that's taking place there.
OBAMA REVEALS A FEW THINGS:
  • HE'S AS GOOD A LIAR AS BILL CLINTON AND MIKE HUCKABEE
  • AND HE KNOWS NOTHING ABOUT MILITARY AFFAIRS.
EARLIER, OBAMA CLAIMED THAT DEMOCRAT [PRESSURE CREATED THE POST-SURGE SUCCESS AND NOT THE SURGE (VIA GATEWAY):
I would point out that much of that violence has been reduced because there was an agreement with tribes in Anbar province -- Sunni tribes -- who started to see, after the Democrats were elected in 2006, you know what, the Americans may be leaving soon, and we are going to be left very vulnerable to the Shi'as. We should start negotiating now. That's how you change behavior.
THIS ALL ADDS UP:
  • FOR HIS PREVARICATIONS ABOUT WHERE HE STOOD ON THE SURGE
  • AND HIS FANTASY EXPLANATION ABOUT IT'S SUCCESS
  • OBAMA PROVES HE IS UNFIT TO BE COMMANDER IN CHIEF.
  • REPEAT: ALL OF HIS EXPLANATIONS CANNOT BE TRUE; HIS CONFLICTING NARRATIVES REVEAL HIS HAS NO COMPUNCTION ABOUT BALD-FACED LYING, AND HASN'T A CLUE ABOUT MILITARY AFFAIRS.
  • HE IS UNFIT TO BE PRESIDENT OF THE USA. ESPECIALLY DURING WARTIME.

OBAMA REMINDS ME OF THE GUILTY DEFENDANT ACCUSED OF STEALING AND WRECKING A CAR - WHO SAID UNDER OATH:

"FIRSTLY, YER HONOR, I NEVER DROVE THE MAN'S CAR; SECONDLY, HE LENT IT TO ME; THIRDLY, I RETURNED IT IN PERFECT CONDITION!"

STANDING FIRM ON JERUSALEM IS GOOD, BUT IT CAN'T BE JUST THAT

The Shas party has now announced that they will quit the government if Ehud Olmert agrees to divide Jerusalem for Dubya, but you know something? That's not enough. They have to stand firm on the issue of Judea and Samaria as well. For what if withdrawal from those places led to rockets being fired at Jerusalem as a result? Would they want that?

There's also something here about Shas' call for Jonathan Pollard to be released, that tells something interesting:
During US President George W. Bush's visit to Israel this week, Yishai plans to give him, via Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, a letter from Shas spiritual leader and Israel's former Sephardic Chief Rabbi Ovadiah Yosef, appealing for freedom for Jonathan Pollard.

Yeshai did not say if he had confidence that Olmert would actually hand over the letter to Bush. It will be recalled that Olmert's predecessor Ariel Sharon, in February 2002, was given a letter on behalf of Pollard signed by 110 Knesset Members to give to Bush, but - it was later found out - never delivered it to its destination. Similarly a few months later, when Sharon met again with Bush in Washington, the issue of Pollard was not raised. Olmert, too, has been roundly criticized in the Pollard camp for all but ignoring him.

Rabbi Yosef's letter explains the importance of the concept and religious obligation of "freeing captives" in Jewish tradition, and the urgency of the Pollard case in particular.
One could probably argue that Sharon "forgot", but decidedly, it wouldn't be enough, or it'd be too easy. Sharon only showed weakness, and failed in responsibility, though not as much as when he withdrew from Gaza and enabled Hamas to fire rockets at Sderot.

ISLAMIC GROUP WON'T GET A CHAIR AT TEMPLE UNIVERSITY

Good news from Philadelphia. Temple has rejected donations from an Islamic front group that Sami al-Arian may have been connected with:
Last spring, an Islamic group came to Temple University with an extremely generous offer: $1.5 million for an endowed chair in Islamic studies to honor religion professor Mahmoud Ayoub.

But after months of talks, the deal fell apart when trustees and others raised concerns about the donor, the International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT), a nonprofit research organization that was included in a government probe into funding of suspected terrorists.

[...]

IIIT was among 20 charities and nonprofits raided by the government in 2002 to gather evidence against Sami Al-Arian, a former professor suspected of funding Palestinian terrorists through a University of South Florida think tank. Al-Arian was aquitted of most charges but pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy and received 57 months in prison.
Is he still in prison? I think a retrial is in order, as he can't be allowed to get away with his terror funding involvement. I'm certainly glad that Temple wouldn't take the offer.

IRAN HARRASSES AMERICAN NAVY

We were very close to taking them out. Do they really want to start a war with us?

From the New York Times:
WASHINGTON (AP) -- In what U.S. officials called a serious provocation, Iranian Revolutionary Guard boats harassed and provoked three U.S. Navy ships in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, threatening to explode the American vessels.

U.S. forces were on the verge of firing on the Iranian boats in the early Sunday incident, when the boats turned and moved away, a Pentagon official said. ''It is the most serious provocation of this sort that we've seen yet,'' said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak on the record.

White House spokesman Tony Fratto said: ''We urge the Iranians to
refrain from such provocative actions that could lead to a dangerous incident in
the future.''

The incident occurred at about 5 a.m. local time Sunday as a U.S. Navy
cruiser, destroyer and frigate were on their way into the Persian Gulf and
passing through the strait -- a major oil shipping route.

Five small boats began charging the U.S. ships, dropping boxes in the water in front of the ships and forcing the U.S. ships to take evasive maneuvers, the Pentagon official said.

There were no injuries but the official said there could have been, because the Iranian boats turned away ''literally at the very moment that U.S. forces were preparing to open fire'' in self defense.

The official said he didn't have the precise transcript of communications that passed between the two forces, but said the Iranians radioed something like ''we're coming at you and you'll explode in a couple minutes.''

Iranian officials were not immediately available for comment Monday,
and there was no news of the incident on Iranian state-run media.

They dropped "boxes" in front of our ships. Of course, our guys couldn't have known the contents of those boxes. They could have been bombs.

This was a probing exercise. They want to see how far they can push us.

Question, how did they know when they went too far? They turned back just as we were about to take them out? Was that mere luck?

RELIAPUNDIT ADDS: THESE ARE THE FRUITS OF APPEASEMENT:

It's no accident they pull crap like this weeks after the NIE. Appeasement always engenders more adventurism.

Now we must send a very clear message. And maybe it should be kinetic.

SOONER OR LATER, ISRAEL'S RELATIONS WITH EGYPT WILL FALL APART

P. David Hornik talks about the rising tensions between Israel and Egypt, following the discovery of their helping terrorists enter Gaza.

It's going to happen, eventually, that diplomatic relations will crumble. Not that I would feel sorry, seeing how Egypt's Islamists led by Hosni Mubarak haven't changed an iota. "Peace" with Egypt is on a political level only, and if they're going to continue their Islamist hostility, then I think a parting of the ways with them would surely be quite welcome.

HAS BILL'S "LEGACY" LOST ITS SHINE?

As Hillary's numbers continue to slip in the polls in the final run-up days to the New Hampshire Primary, her husband may not be off much help. From this article in the Washington Post:
AMHERST, N.H., Jan. 5 -- He's no kid anymore, and it's his wife who is attempting the comeback. But former president Bill Clinton looked and certainly sounded Saturday like a politician whose legacy is on the line.

As Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) campaigned an hour away in Durham, barely mentioning her husband as she sought to rebound from her stinging Iowa loss, Bill Clinton blended a retrospective on his long career with highlights from his wife's resume and assessments of where she stands on the major issues of the day. But for the most part, it was Bill Clinton on Bill Clinton, a weary warrior fighting against a powerful wave.

[...]

Facing in Obama a candidate with charisma of his own and a message of change, even Clinton advisers conceded that, of all the images that the former president conveys, a fresh face is not one of them.

Does Clinton himself sense this? At their joint event on Friday morning, Clinton scanned the crowd as his wife spoke, biting his nails.

...He did blame the news media, at least in part for the Iowa outcome, contending that reporters have given a free pass to Obama, who won the caucuses by a convincing eight percentage points.

[...]

...[H]e was rarely animated. When audience members asked questions, Clinton stole looks around the room. For once, he kept his eye on the clock. "I gotta run," he called out when the hour was up....
Could we be seeing the demise of the Clinton Machine? It's too early to say, of course. But for the moment, the Clinton Machine has lost its shine. Tuesday's result in the New Hampshire primary will tell the tale.

SO DID BARACK OBAMA PRACTICE ISLAM?

Daniel Pipes now confirms that yes, he did. Read about why it matters.

A bit of silliness from "The Times" of London: "UK living standards outstrip US"

Living standards in Britain are set to rise above those in America for the first time since the 19th century, according to a report by the respected Oxford Economics consultancy. The calculations suggest that, measured by gross domestic product per capita, Britain can now hold its head up high in the economic stakes after more than a century of playing second fiddle to the Americans.

It says that GDP per head in Britain will be o23,500 this year, compared with o23,250 in America, reflecting not only the strength of the pound against the dollar but also the UK economy's record run of growth and rising incomes going back to the early 1990s. In those days, according to Oxford Economics, Britain's GDP per capita was 34% below that in America, 33% less than in Germany and 26% lower than in France. Now, not only have average incomes crept above those in America but they are more than 8% above France (o21,700) and Germany (o21,665)....

Oxford Economics says that while the comparisons are affected by sterling's high value against the dollar, they also reflect longer-term factors. "The UK has been catching up steadily with living standards in the US since 2001 -- so, it is a well established trend rather than simply the result of currency fluctuations," its report says. It concedes, however, that a significant fall in the pound against other currencies would push Britain back down the ladder. It has assumed an exchange rate of just over $2 for the purpose of the calculation but in recent days the pound has slipped below that level.

The Oxford analysts also point out that Americans benefit from lower prices than those in Britain. With an adjustment made for this "purchasing power parity", the average American has more spending power than his UK counterpart and pays lower taxes. (In the run-up to Christmas many Britons travelled to New York and other American cities to take advantage of the strength of sterling against the dollar and those lower prices.)

More here

GDP per capita is an important statistic -- much more objective than the various "national welfare" and "quality of life" indices. But it DOES need to be adjusted for domestic purchasing power. The above results simply reflect the fall in the external value of the US dollar -- but a buck still buys much the same as it used to in the USA itself. Something which I and many others have informally noted is that in Britain, a pound buys about the same as what a dollar buys in Australia -- yet the external value of the Australian dollar is (like the US dollar) about half the value of the British pound. On that admittedly rough criterion, the average Brit is only HALF as well-off as the average American or Australian. That sure is how it looked to me last time I was in Britain. And it has in some ways apparently got worse since then. Note the following report, also from "The Times":
"The crowds are packing the pavements around Oxford Circus Tube station. On the roads, cars and buses are jammed in a giant gridlock. This is central London - but it's not the pre-Christmas rush or the height of the sales. It's just the start of another working day. Similar problems afflict many city centres: Birmingham's New Street, Glasgow's Sauchiehall Street and Edinburgh's Princes Street see similar daily throngs. It is something that city dwellers have become accustomed to, but living in British cities used to be a very different experience."

I used to love London but I am glad I don't live there now.

PAKISTANIS FLEEING TRIBAL REGIONS AHEAD OF MAJOR CONFRONTATION

BBC:
Thousands of Pakistanis have fled into Afghanistan with the security situation deteriorating in Pakistan's tribal regions over the past week.

Hundreds of families, comprising some 6,000 mainly women and children, have been crossing the border.

The UN refugee agency says clashes between Pakistan's Shia and Sunni groups have forced people to flee.

It is the first time so many people have crossed this way as for years it was Afghans fleeing fighting.
EARLIER TODAY WE RELATED THIS:
Pakistan launches new operation in Swat Valley
WEBINDIA: Pakistan launches new operation in Swat Valley

The Pakistan Army launched a new military operation Sunday to clear out armed Islamic militants spotted in remote areas of the strife-torn Swat Valley in the northwest, where hundreds have died in two months of clashes.
AND WE RELATED THIS IN AN EARLIER POST:
NEW GOVERNOR FOR PAKISTAN'S TRIBAL REGION: MUSHARRAF ABOUT TO GET VERY TOUGH
BBC: Key Pakistan governor steps down

The new governor, Owais Ahmed Ghani, has been known for his tough action - which often took the form of brutal force - against Baluch nationalists.

If his appointment indicates anything, it must be that for the Pakistani authorities, the use of force is still very much an option in dealing with militancy in the tribal areas.
  • THE HAMMER IS ABOUT TO COME DOWN ON THE ANVIL.
  • IT'S LONG OVERDUE.

STAY TUNED...
THEN THERE'S THIS FROM THE LONG WAR JOURNAL; (VIA HOT AIR):
Report: Osama bin Laden’s security coordinator captured in Pakistan

By Bill Roggio January 6, 2008 11:15 PM

Osama bin Laden escorted by the Black Guard. ...

A senior al Qaeda commander has been reported to have been captured in the Pakistani city of Lahore, according to a Pakistani newspaper. Dr. Amin al Haq, the security coordinator of Osama bin Laden’s Black Guard, “was apprehended from Lahore couple of days back,” The Nation reported, citing “credible Afghan sources.” Al Haq is said to be “under interrogation” at an undisclosed location.

The report of al Haq’s capture has not been confirmed, a senior intelligence official told The Long War Journal. US intelligence agencies are aware of the report.

... As security coordinator for the Black Guard, it is believed al Haq would be in close proximity to Osama bin Laden. US intelligence believes Osama bin Laden is hiding in Pakistan’s tribal agencies, a claim the Pakistani government has denied.
THOUGH WE RELATED THAT RECENTLY MUSHARRAF DID INDICATE OTHERWISE - FOR THE FIRST TIME:
FOR THE FIRST TIME, MUSHARRAF PUBLICLY SPECIFIES WHERE OSAMA IS HIDING
SATP: Pakistan
Osama bin Laden hiding around Bajaur, says President Pervez Musharraf

President Pervez Musharraf has for the first time identified an area where he thinks al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden may be hiding, according to Dawn.

When asked where he thinks the Osama could be, Musharraf said in an interview to The Washington Post that he could be in the area that borders Pakistan’s Bajaur tribal agency and Afghanistan’s Kunar province.

... THIS IS AN AREA WE'VE LONG AND RECENTLY ATTACKED FOR THIS VERY REASON; FROM ASIA TIMES (VIA VWT JULY 17, 2007):
The Bajaur area has been hit twice by Central Intelligence Agency predator drones, one specifically after Zawahiri. However, at a time when al-Qaeda is reactivated and the Taliban's main focus is to lay siege of Kabul, via adjacent Nooristan province in Afghanistan, aerial surveillance is considered insufficient.

... As a result, a large US base is under construction on a mountaintop at Ghakhi Pass on the Pakistan-Afghanistan (Bajaur) border.

Militants believe this is in preparation for an operation inside Pakistan to clamp down on them as well as to renew the hunt for bin Laden and his associates. As a result, the militants have attacked the new base in an attempt to delay its construction.
MY GUESS: MUSHARRAF WOULD ONLY SAY THIS IF:
  • A MAJOR ATTACK IS AFOOT;
  • OSAMA IS TRAPPED -
  • AND THIS LEAK IS MEANT TO FLUSH HIM OUT A LITTLE;
  • AND THEREFORE I FEEL THAT OSAMA WILL SOON BE DEAD.
DOES ALL THIS (AND RECENT HIGH LEVEL VISITS BY KARZAI, PM BROWN, PM RUDD, PM PRODI AND PRESIDENT SARKOZY) ADD UP TO AN IMMINENT MAJOR OFFENSIVE AGAINST OSAMA?

I THINK IT DOES.
  • THE LOCALS SEEM KNOW IT.
  • THE TALIBAN KNOW IT.
  • AL QAEDA KNOWS IT.
I HOPE MY FEELING ABOUT THIS ARE ACCURATE AND THAT THE HAMMER AND ANVIL ATTACK IS A SUCCESS.

AN AMUSING GREENIE ATTACK ON THE INHOFE REPORT

I reproduce below one of the few Greenie responses to the Inhofe report that goes beyond the usual kneejerk reaction of saying: "It's the oil companies". The post is by James Wang, Ph.D., an alleged "climate scientist" at Environmental Defense, a Greenie organization. I have put a few italicized comments into the article itself and then, following the post, I append a few comments from various sources which highlight how weak the attack is

Climate change denier and U.S. Senator James Inhofe (R-Okla) published a report just before Christmas with the headline: "Over 400 Prominent Scientists Disputed Man-Made Global Warming Claims in 2007." Does that leave you surprised and wondering? It shouldn't. It's a shocker of a headline, but the report itself doesn't back up the claim. The Inhofe report is 156 pages long. The eight-page introduction - all that most people will read - describes the report and its goals, and gives selected highlights. The body of the report is a series of profiles starting with a sentence or two of biography followed by quotes questioning the validity of climate science.

The aim of the report is to refute that only a handful of scientists - mostly in the pocket of oil companies - still dispute that global warming is happening, and that it's caused by human activities. To this end, Inhofe's aides scoured the internet for quotes from skeptical "scientists". I put this word in quotes because not all the "over 400 prominent scientists" are truly scientists. As the report itself states, the list includes economists and engineers. These may be smart people, but a smart person without expertise in climate science is still a person without expertise in climate science.

Some of these "over 400 scientists" have not published any climate science-related research. I did a search on the terms "climate," "weather," and "carbon dioxide" in the extensive ISI Web of Science database, and did not find, for example, James Hammond, a chemist; statistician Bjorn Lomborg (author of The Skeptical Environmentalist, not a peer-reviewed scientific publication); and physicist Antonio Zichichi.

Others are published, but while their results are consistent with the consensus view, their interpretations are not. For example, Duncan Wingham observed that the Antarctic ice sheet is growing rather than shrinking (true), but then said this is not "favorable to the notion we are seeing the results of global warming." In fact, although the Greenland Ice Sheet is projected to melt and contribute to sea-level rise over the next century, the Antarctic is projected to gain ice in the near term due to heavier snowfall induced by global warming. The IPCC Fourth Assessment Report states:
Current global model studies project that the Antarctic Ice Sheet will remain too cold for widespread surface melting and is expected to gain in mass due to increased snowfall.

[Another heads I win, tails you lose proposition: Global warming can make the ice either grow or shrink. Whatever happens is "proof" of global warming. In philosophy, an unfalsifiable proposition like that is regarded as simply meaningless. And note that the same "warming" is supposed to be causing less ice in the arctic and more ice in the antarctic all at the same time. That warming sure is pesky stuff!]

Then there are the many others making statements that are simply incorrect. The highlights of the report - presumably its best shots - contain one factual error after another. Here is a sampling, with responses from Michael Oppenheimer, a climate scientist at Princeton University and science advisor to Environmental Defense:
Even if the concentration of 'greenhouse gases' double man would not perceive the temperature impact. -Oleg Sorochtin

MO: Wrong. Earth is well short of a doubling of CO2, yet changes are apparent not only to scientists, but to the "man in the street" - warmer winters, a melting Arctic. These are closely tied to the buildup of greenhouse gases.

[So the "man in the street" is an authority now! And even if changes are apparent to all, it still does not prove that CO2 caused them]

The effect of solar winds on cosmic radiation has just recently been established and, furthermore, there seems to be a good correlation between cloudiness and variations in the intensity of cosmic radiation. Here we have a mechanism which is a far better explanation to variations in global climate than the attempts by IPCC to blame it all on anthropogenic input of greenhouse gases. -Boris Winterhalter

MO: This theory is decades old and has been examined closely. The underlying correlations have been shown to be spurious, and there is no physical mechanism shown to connect cosmic rays to climate.

[An outright lie. Svensmark not only proposed a theory to connect the events but demonstrated it experimentally]

More here

There is much more of the same low intellectual standard so I will at this point go straight on to a few comments by others:

1). Somehow Michael Oppenheimer is portrayed as the authority to refute over 400 scientists? Also, EDF claims that peer-reviewed research is all we should pay attention to, but the Senate report includes a section toward the end of an extensive sampling of recent peer-reviewed studies debunking man-made climate fears. It is obvious that the environmentalists are running scared as they realize the huge international impact this Senate report is having in redefining the climate change debate. (For sampling of media impact, see here )

Most significantly, there is no assertion by EDF or Oppenheimer in this rebuttal of the alleged overwhelming "consensus" on man-made global warming. Have they given up that unfounded argument so easily in the face of the Senate report? So far, the below is the best counter anyone has offered to the Senate Report. They attack, you decide.

2). Notice that ED styles Wang as a "climate scientist". His PhD is in Earth and Planetary Sciences. I see they've moved beyond demanding that one be a climatologist.

3). It is ironic to have ED and Oppenheimer noting 'industry ties' when Oppenheimer is a paid partisan of ED, the premier environmentalist special interest lobbying group!

4). The ED (Environmental Defense) criticism of the Senate report makes a big thing of economists and engineers being featured in it. Read this excellent research by Climate Resistance revealing that the so-called "thousands" of scientists from the IPCC are made up of many economists and engineers as well. After all, you could argue that half the climate change debate is premised on economics that falls under Stern Review inspired "it's cheaper to act now" than wait category.

I wonder if ED or other critiques of the report will note that the chief of the UN IPCC, Rajendra K. Pachauri is an engineer and an economist? The Associated Press has referred to Pachauri as the "chief climate scientist" for the UN. But -- funnily enough -- environmentalists and other critics of the Senate report failed to complain to the AP that Pachauri was merely an engineer and an economist and therefore should not be called a "chief climate scientist." The New York Times has erroneously referred to Pachauri as a "climatologist" but see here for details on Pachauri's background.

5). Climate alarmists don't seem to realise that by claiming science can be bought by a few oil dollars, they are actually denigrating all scientists - there is a far bigger pot of government money available to IPCC consensus scientists, plus non-scientist Al Gore has made tens of millions out of climate alarmism.

Secondly, we don't really need a list of 400 scientsists. Aside from 2007 being the year of a biased, cherry-picked literature review known as AR4, it was a good year for peer reviewed science that produced inconvenient results for the IPCC consensus e.g. a warm bias in the surface temperature records, the UAH troposhere data has been shown to be robust from independent sources, Spencer's negative feedback, Tsonis et al climate shifts paper, factors other than CO2 involved in Arctic warming, climate sensitivity, the Loehle climate reconstruction, another quiet hurricane season plus papers that fail to link hurricanes with global warming, the tree ring-surface temperature divergence problem, Lomborg's view backed by Prins and Rayner, and so on. In fact every cornerstone of global warming alarmism can be undermined by peer reviewed science, with more papers to come in 2008.

We all know that science isn't a numbers game - it doesn't work by consensus - ultimately it's a question of who is wrong or who is right - not about counting scientific sheep. But the situation is even worse for the consensus - even if it could be proved that CO2 drives climate change, modern life revolves around heating/lighting our homes, economic growth, industry, travel etc, all of which emits CO2 - and we can't stop that until we have alternatives that give us business as usual without CO2 emissions. Then there is China.

SCOTUS AND VOTER ID: A CASE AS PARTISAN AS GORE V BUSH - AND MAYBE JUST AS IMPORTANT TO THE NEXT ELECTION

NYTIMES:
In April 2006, a federal judge upheld Indiana’s law on voter identification, the strictest in the nation, saying there was no evidence that it would prevent any voter from having his ballot counted.
BUT LIBERAL DEMOCRAT LAWYERS FOUND A CASE TO CHALLENGE IT - AND THE SUPREME COURT WILL HEAR IT THIS WEEK; (CONTINUED):
The case goes before the Supreme Court just as the 2008 presidential primaries are beginning. The court will probably deliver its decision by late June, in time to affect the November elections.

Supporters of the law, most of them Republicans, say a requirement for state photo identification card is a prudent step toward curbing voter fraud. They say the requirement helps restore confidence in the voting process by removing the potential for fraud, though Indiana has never cited a case of “voter impersonation,” which is what the law is supposed to prevent.

Opponents of the law, most of them Democrats, view voter identification requirements as a deterrent that disproportionately affects poor, minority and elderly voters, who more often than other people lack the required forms of identification and who also tend to back Democrats. And unlike supporters of the law, they say they have evidence to bolster their case and show that it has harmed Indiana voters.
IN MANY PLACES, THE DEMOCRATS RELY ON VOTER FRAUD TO WIN ELECTIONS AND THEY HAVE BEEN CAUGHT, INDICTED, AND CONVICTED IN MANY OF THEM.

GATEWAY AND DOUG HAVE THE GOODS.
  • THAT'S WHY THE DEMS ARE FIGHTING TOOTH AND NAIL AGAINST VOTER ID.
  • EVEN THOUGH THE OVERWHELMING MAJORITY OF THE ELECTORATE - IN BOTH PARTIES - SUPPORT IT.
  • IF THE SCOTUS DOES WHAT IT SHOULD - AND UPHOLDS THE LAW, (AFTER ALL, PHOTO ID IS N BIG DEAL: IN MANY STATES, YOU NEED PHOTO ID TO GET INTO A BAR OR BUY SIX-PACK OF BEER!) - THE DEMS WILL LOSE A FEW MORE STATES.
  • STATES LIKE PENNSYLVANIA (WITH CORRUPT PHILLY) AND WISCONSIN (WITH CORRUPT MADISON) AND OHIO (WITH CORRUPT CLEVELAND) AND MISSOURI (WITH CORRUPT ST LOUIS) AND WASHINGTON (WITH CORRUPT SEATTLE).

WESTERN OFFICIAL PRIVY TO BHUTTO DEATH DATA: "SHE WAS KILLED BY BOMB, NOT BULLETS"

UK GUARDIAN:
A Western official with extensive security expertise in Pakistan said he believed 'conclusively' that Bhutto was killed by the blast from the bomb and not by an assassin's bullet. 'I do know the shots didn't hit her. The Interior Ministry allowed me to be party to photos and other materials that showed it wasn't a bullet.'

He said all the evidence supported the Pakistani government's original - hotly contested - assertion that Bhutto died from a violent blow to the head caused by the suicide blast as she ducked into her vehicle. Film showing her headscarf lifting up after the shooting was caused by her attempt to quickly retreat into the car, he said.
THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I WROTE AS SOON AS I SAW THE VIDEO - ONE WEEK AGO.

EXCERPT:
I watched it several times.

I don't see any bullets enter or exit Bhutto.

I have seen other videos of people being shot and in them I always saw the bullet exit with flesh and blood. This is the case with the famous Zapruder film: you can see Kennedy's head get blown up/blown off/blown to pieces - after all, the bullet doesn't hangout in side the body of the victim: it enters and exits, VIOLENTLY! It's bloody.

There's no blood in this Bhutto video. I think it proves that the shooter missed. ...

* If you watch CAREFULLY, you can see that she FIRST moves her right arm back, off the roof of the vehicle as if to attempt to get back into the safety of her armored vehicle before she is hit.

* If she had already been hit in the head or neck the arms would've flailed up and away or to the wound, reflexively.

* She is obviously attempting to get back down-and-into her vehicle.

* THE BOMB GOES OFF BEFORE HER HEAD IS BACK UNDER THE ROOF.
* That's when the bomb exploded.

* THE BLAST OF THE BOMB PROBABLY DROVE HER HEAD DOWN AND INTO THE SUNROOF LEVER, JUST AS THE PAKISTAN AUTHORITIES SAID.

Watch it yourself.

Watch her VOLUNTARILY move her arm FIRST - as if cogently trying to duck back into the vehicle. This is not what a person shot on the head and neck does.

END OF STORY.

WHO MIGHT OBAMA PICK AS HIS VEEP?

It's just about over for the Dems; just like last time: the winner of Iowa wins the nomination - (I guess they forgot that it didn't work out so great for them last time!).

SO.... who might Obama pick? Here's my list:
  • Sam Nunn - has great gravitas; is a foreign affairs and defense expert; a southerner; a DC insider. Obama's Dick Cheney. (But at 70... is he too old? Not if McCain is the GOP nominee.)
  • William Cohen - DITTO ABOVE - but also: was SedDef (under Dem Clinton) and therefore has managerial experience within the bureaucracy, and is a nominal Republican with a gorgeous black wife. (BUT an easterner and therefore not geographically perfect.)
  • Bob Kerrey - midwesterner, moderate, DC insider. A HIGHLY decorated Vietnam Vet.
  • Jim Webb - southerner, Vietnam Vet. Now a dove. (But a bit of a loose cannon.)
  • Donna Shalala - Sec HHS for 8 years, now pres of University of Miami. Would help in DC and in FLA and midwest - where she was a popular guv.
  • Sherrod Brown - youngish freshman Senator from Ohio - a midwesterner, and longtime Congressman and DC insider.
  • Max Cleland - former Senator, former Sec VA, southerner, Vietnam Vet. His injuries might help Obama play identity politics.
  • Anthony Zinni - former CinC Central Command, Special Amb to Israel/Palestinian "peace-process", a four star dove, (and a little bit less of a loose cannon than Wesley Clark).
  • Chuck Hagel - fellow Nebraskan like Kerrey, but a "Republican" (in name only) Still, it would give Obama the appearance of being the Big Tent candidate. Decorated Vietnam Vet.
  • Mike Bloomberg - "Independent" with good managerial credentials, but no foreign policy or military creds. Likely only if Obama fears a third party run and wants to head it off at the pass.
  • John Edwards.
  • Bill Bradley - former Senator, moderate with gravitas. (They could have some mean one-on-one games in the WH!)
OBAMA/NUNN would frighten the GOP the most. Then, OBAMA/WEBB.
OBAMA/SHALALA has a nice ring to it! OBAMA/ZINNI sounds zany, too.

Pakistan launches new operation in Swat Valley

WEBINDIA:
Pakistan launches new operation in Swat Valley

The Pakistan Army launched a new military operation Sunday to clear out armed Islamic militants spotted in remote areas of the strife-torn Swat Valley in the northwest, where hundreds have died in two months of clashes.

An undisclosed number of soldiers were involved in land and air operations between the towns of Matta and Chuprial after local residents reported that small bands of militants were looting and terrorizing villages.

The valley has been a battlefield since late October when President Pervez Musharraf deployed troops to rein in around 5,000 heavily armed followers of radical cleric Maulana Fazlullah.
THE ANVIL IS GETTING INTO POSITION...

IT'S NO TIME FOR ABANDONING MUSHARRAF - AS THE DEMS WOULD.

JERUSALEM CAN BE DIVIDED ONLY AFTER A MAJORITY IN THE KNESSET APPROVE A NEW "BASIC LAW"

DETAILS OF THE BASIC LAW HERE AND HOW IT APPLIES. EXCERPT:
Clauses 5 and 6 of one of Israel's cardinal laws - Basic Law:

Jerusalem, Capital of Israel - mean that Jerusalem's status as the united and sole capital of Israel may not be compromised.

The first clause of the law in question, passed in 1980 under Prime Minister Menachem Begin and President Yitzchak Navon, states,

"Jerusalem, whole and united, is the capital of Israel."

Clause 5 stipulates the precise area of Jerusalem, while Clause 6 states, "No authorities relating to the area of Jerusalem and that is in the legal purview of the State of Israel or the Municipality of Jerusalem shall be transferred to any foreign political or governmental element, whether permanently or for a set period."

Clause 7 states that Clauses and 5 and 6 may not be changed except if another Basic Law is accepted by the majority of the Knesset.

MEDIA MANIPULATED MOOD?

Daniel Henninger wonders why 70% of the people polled by the Gallup Organization think America is headed in the wrong direction, when 84% think things are going well:
On New Year's Eve, Gallup's poll delivered unto us the good news that 84% of Americans say they are satisfied with how things are going for them personally. What Woody Allen might say about that phenomenal datum of good cheer one can only guess. One then has to account for the darker data Gallup released two weeks earlier: Some 70% of those responding believe the nation is headed in the wrong direction.
That does seem contradictory, if not paradoxical.

He provides some evidence of progress:
The Federal Interagency Forum on Child and Family Statistics annually publishes data on the well-being of the nation's children, thought by many to be the point of all this effort.

In 1980, deaths per 100,000 U.S. children aged 5 to 14 was 30.6; by 2004, that number fell to 16.8. Some 25 years ago, daily cigarette smoking among 12th graders was about 21%; in 2006 it was about 12% for both males and females. Childhood immunizations are rising steadily.

In August, the Centers for Disease Control noted that the death rate in 2004 fell by 3.8% in a year, "a record low historical figure." Life expectancy for men and women at birth in 1940 was 63 years; it is now nearly 78 years. We, or someone, must be doing something right.
Why then the gloom?

I think it is manipulated by the MSM.

Look at this lead from the lead story in Saturday's New Duranty Times:
The unemployment rate surged to 5 percent in December as the economy added a meager 18,000 jobs, the smallest monthly increase in four years, the Labor Department reported on Friday.
Got that? "Surged." Wow.

As the indefatigatible Gateway Pundit showed, the media treated a similar rise in the unemployment rate (to an even higher level!) very differently when BJ Clinton was in the White House:

June 7, 1996-- Here is how the mainstream news (Dan Rather) reported that the unemployment rate jumped up to 5.6%:

“The government came out today with its latest report on unemployment. It says the unemployment rate rose slightly, 2/10ths of a point last month, up to 5.6 percent – still low overall. And the numbers, pure and simple, can be misleading. Economics correspondent Ray Brady tonight has the story behind them.”

Fact is, average unemployment during the Bush presidency has been lower than it was during the Clinton presidency. Moral of the story? If you want to live like a Republican -- vote for a Republican!

Welcome Bush with bombs, says jihadist traitor Gadahn

THE AUSTRALIAN:
AN American al-Qaeda militant has urged Islamist militants to welcome President George W. Bush "with bombs" when he visits the Middle East this week, and has torn up his US passport on camera.

“Welcome him not with flowers and applause but with bombs and traps,” Adam Gadahn said in an Arabic aside on a 50-minute video posted on the Internet, which was mostly recorded in English and aimed at the American public.

Gadahn, also known as Azzam the American, said the jihad against the United States will continue until it releases Muslims from its jails. He complained about the treatment of jailed US Islamist militant John Walker Lindh, and others.

In a theatrical move, he took his US passport from his breast pocket and showed its pages on camera before ripping it up in protest at the treatment of Muslim detainees.

“The jihad against you will remain our duty as long as there remains even one Muslim in American captivity,” Gadahn said.

“That is why it is incumbent upon you (the American people) to take the steps necessary to force the regime in Washington to free each and every one of them, wherever they are and whatever their supposed crime.”

Gadahn devoted most of the tape, entitled “An Invitation to Reflection and Repentance', to a detailed explanation of the shortcomings of US foreign policy and Western Christian civilisation and their defeat at the hands of Islam and Muslims.

  • THE ACLU AND GADAHN HAVE THE SAME AGENDA.
  • NOTICE HOW HE FRAMES IT AS A WAR ON WESTERN CIVILIZATION - AND NOT OUR FOREIGN POLICY.
  • GADAHN IS A TRAITOR.
  • THOSE WHO AGREE WITH HIM ARE TRAITOROUS.

WHY "THE SURGE" WORKED

Famed internet essayist Bill Whittle may have hit the nail on the head as to why "The Surge" worked. And it wasn't because of a massive influx of huge numbers of troops:

And as for the Surge, I am struck by one thought, and that is this: It seems clear now that we needed more troops in theater from Day One. But I think the spectacular success of the Surge is due less to the number of boots on the ground than it is to something far more important.

Looking back on the rise of the insurgency, it seems as if the average Iraqi did not know what to make of America. I suspect that many would have been far more supportive a long time ago, if it were not for the image of a helicopter atop a building in 1975 and a line of desperate people running for their lives. To work with Americans may have been what many wanted to do much, much sooner.

But…

When Michael Moore makes a hugely successful film praising Saddam’s paradise and calling these people who bomb women and children in marketplaces “freedom fighters,” and when an election turns and places into Congressional power a political party dedicated to reproducing that helicopter tableau as soon as possible... what would you do? Because if you guess wrong and the Americans leave, you will be taken out into the street in front of your family and have your head sawed off.

I think the Surge has had spectacular success not because of the additional troops so much as for the fact that when the media and the Democrats demanded we cut and run… we did not cut and run. We doubled down. When the calls for defeat and dishonor were at their loudest – sad to say a not unwarranted street rep we had made for ourselves – somehow, somehow we simply just hung on and gave them not a retreat but a charge.

Jesus Christ, but that must have gotten someone’s attention. Yes, the Surge is working. But I believe it is not a surge of boots that is doing the work so much as it is a surge of hope.

Dr Sanity adds:

For hope to be meaningful, it must be reality-based (yet another term rather inappropriately appropriated by the delusional denizens of the left). "Reclaiming the American Dream" (the subtitle of Obama's book) is more than just mouthing the socialist platitudes and promising eternal peace and plenty. It means going back to promoting the fundamental values--life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness--which make those hopes possible, and which formed the basis for creating this wonderful country to begin with.

It means facing the real world and dealing with the threats that exist, not ignoring them and pandering to human proclivity for psychological denial of reality. It means facing the real enemies of life and freedom; not giving those enemies a free pass and pretending that imperfection in the forces of good is the only "evil" that matters (psychological displacement). It means more than the empty promises of politicians.

In short, sometimes it means choosing to do what is hard and sticking to it because it is right.

Or, another way of understanding the real audacity of hope is the conversation between Frodo and Sam at Osgiliath in "The Two Towers":

"I can't do this Sam.";

"I know. It's all wrong. By rights we shouldn't even be here. But we are. It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger, they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn't. They kept going. Because they were holding on to something.";

"What are we holding on to Sam?";

"That there's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo... and it's worth fighting for."

The courageous men and women of our military services know what is worth fighting for; Forty Second Boyd knew what was worth fighting for; and, my audacious hope is that the American people will once again remember what is worth fighting for; and break out of the self-induced mental fog many have slipped into to avoid an unpleasant and frightening reality bearing down on them.

Because, it really matters.

Yes, it really matters.

A JIHADI MOLE IN THE STATE DEPARTMENT?

According to London's Sunday Times, there may be a jihadi mole in the US State Department:

A WHISTLEBLOWER has made a series of extraordinary claims about how corrupt government officials allowed Pakistan and other states to steal nuclear weapons secrets.

Sibel Edmonds, a 37-year-old former Turkish language translator for the FBI, listened into hundreds of sensitive intercepted conversations while based at the agency’s Washington field office.

She approached The Sunday Times last month after reading about an Al-Qaeda terrorist who had revealed his role in training some of the 9/11 hijackers while he was in Turkey.

The Turkish connection is what's important:

Among the hours of covert tape recordings, she says she heard evidence that one well-known senior official in the US State Department was being paid by Turkish agents in Washington who were selling the information on to black market buyers, including Pakistan.

The name of the official – who has held a series of top government posts – is known to The Sunday Times. He strongly denies the claims.

However, Edmonds said: “He was aiding foreign operatives against US interests by passing them highly classified information, not only from the State Department but also from the Pentagon, in exchange for money, position and political objectives.”

She claims that the FBI was also gathering evidence against senior Pentagon officials – including household names – who were aiding foreign agents.

Who in the Senate will call for hearings on this? Anyone? Where is Joe McCarthy now?

UK BISHOP: SHARIA ENCLAVES EXIST IN GREAT BRITAN

UK TELEGRAPH (VIA HOT AIR):
Bishop warns of no-go zones for non-Muslims

Islamic extremists have created "no-go" areas across Britain where it is too dangerous for non-Muslims to enter, one of the Church of England's most senior bishops warns today.

The Rt Rev Michael Nazir-Ali, the Bishop of Rochester and the Church's only Asian bishop, says that people of a different race or faith face physical attack if they live or work in communities dominated by a strict Muslim ideology.

... Bishop Nazir-Ali, who was born in Pakistan, gives warning that attempts are being made to give Britain an increasingly Islamic character by introducing the call to prayer and wider use of sharia law, a legal system based on the Koran.

In an attack on the Government's response to immigration and the influx of "people of other faiths to these shores", he blames its "novel philosophy of multiculturalism" for allowing society to become deeply divided, and accuses ministers of lacking a "moral and spiritual vision".

Echoing Trevor Phillips, the chairman of the Commission for Equalities and Human Rights, who has said that the country is "sleepwalking into segregation", the bishop argues that multiculturalism has led to deep divisions.

David Davis, the shadow home secretary, has accused Muslims of promoting a kind of "voluntary apartheid" by shutting themselves in closed societies and demanding immunity from criticism.

  • IF THEY ADVOCATE SHARIA - (WHICH IS SEDITION IN ANY DEMOCRACY) - THEY SHOULD BE DEPORTED - OR BE SENTENCED TO LIFE IMPRISONMENT IF THEY'RE CITIZENS, (OR VOLUNTARY PERMANENT EXILE.)

ONLY THOSE WHO HATE WESTERN CIVILIZATION AND JUDEO-CHRISTIAN CULTURE WOULD OPPOSE THESE HARSH BUT NECESSARY MEASURES: ONLY THE JIHADISTS AND THE LEFT.

WHAT MITT SHOULD SAY TO MCCAIN ABOUT ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION AND AMNESTY

There's a wide range of opinion about how well Mitt did last might - under the constant attack from all the other candidates.

I think Mitt did GREAT. Byron York has another view.

I thought McCain was snarly and snide and petty - and I doubt those are qualities the American people want in the next president.

On the amnesty issue I thought McCain was very rude, he claimed that his bill wasn't amnesty. (HAH!)

But Mitt's counter-attack wasn't forceful enough; it could be sharpened a bit, and here's what I'd have him say - if I was advising him:

"I'LL LEAVE IT UP TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE TO DECIDE WHETHER YOUR IMMIGRATION BILL WAS AMNESTY OR NOT. I THINK THEY KNOW. I THINK THEY'RE RIGHT.

REPUBLICANS WHO LIKED YOUR BILL SHOULD GET YOUR VOTE. REPUBLICANS WHO DIDN'T LIKE IT, SHOULDN'T VOTE FOR YOU."

JIHADISTS DAMAGING DEMOCRACY IN THAILAND AND PAKISTAN

These two nations are experiencing major political upheavals and disarray because of jihadists.

In Pakistan they were partly responsible for the Musharraf coup and are now destabilizing the government.

In Thailand they are partly responsible for the recent coup - (the ousted PM was a hawk and was ousted by appeasers) and their continued war in the south (in which thousands have been brutally murdered by the jihadist enemy) threatens to become a full scale civil war there.

Neither of these nation's problems with jihadists has anything to do with Zionism or Bush

They have everything to do with the proactive plan of the enemy: to reestablish a global caliphate under sharia.

Pakistan and Thailand are nations which occupy important strategic positions for the Free World and we must help them both defeat the religious fanatics/totalitarians who threaten them.

This is NOT USA hegemony - as the Left and the jihadists BOTH argue; it is standing up for universal human rights.

We all know about the instability in Pakistan because of the recent assassination of Bhutto.

Thailand is in nearly the same straits - and they appear to be getting worse. (More here and here and here.)

If the USA elects a Democrat than these two nations will most certainly NOT get the support they need to defeat the jihadists and the jihadists will stand a much better chance of winning in both countries - and thereby establish sharia totalitarianist states which would become safe havens and bases for expanding their jihadist hegemony.

That's why the future of the Free World depends on YOU AND ME WORKING OUR BUTTS OFF TO DEFEAT THE DEMS IN 2008.

We must do it for children and our children's children.

OBAMA'S MORAL HYPOCRISY ON CHILDREN'S HEALTHCARE AND ABORTION

It's typical of the Left, and Obama reiterated it in last night's ABC/NH debate: he said that if elected president he would force parents to buy healthcare for their children (if they could afford it) - SPECIFICALLY BECAUSE THE CHILDREN HAVE NO CHOICE.

BUT ... he wouldn't ever force an expectant mother to have her baby; (he even voted AGAINST the partial birth abortion ban!).

ER, UM... BARRY HUSSEIN SOETERO OBAMA, JUNIOR:

FETUSES HAVE NO CHOICE AND NEED LIFE AS MUCH AS THE CHILDREN NEED HEALTHCARE.

I also LOVE how Leftists refer to young American's as "OUR CHILDREN" - (indeed they are our future).

How come the Left regards the fetus as merely the non-human PROPERTY of the mother, and only the mother, not even the father)??

"Her" fetus has as much potential as "our" children. CHILDREN AND FETUSES ARE ALL HELPLESS AND ALL NEED OUR HELP AND PROTECTION.

For Obama to use helplessness as a rationale in one instant but ignore in the next is HYPOCRISY.

DOES AVIGDOR LIEBERMAN MEAN IT?

It's been reported now that Yisrael Beitenu head Avigdor Lieberman is threatening to quit the government if talks are held between Israel and Fatah. But, does he mean it? He's going to have to quit now if he really wants to prove himself.

British soldiers returning for Christmas forced to change out of uniforms on freezing runway before using airport terminal

Excerpt:

Scores of soldiers flying home from Afghanistan on Christmas leave were ordered to change out of their uniforms on a freezing runway before being allowed into a civilian airport terminal. Troops were told not to be seen in public in their uniforms - which they had worn with pride while risking their lives during months of intense fighting against the Taliban.

Last night the Ministry of Defence and bosses at Birmingham International Airport blamed each other for the indignity suffered by the soldiers - which comes amid mounting anger over the treatment of British troops returning from war. One soldier, who was ordered to undress for "security reasons", said: "It is an insult to the entire Army to force guys who've been fighting in Afghanistan to obey some jobsworth rule when all they want to do is get home to their families. "So much for a nation proud of its servicemen. The temperature was Baltic on the runway but most of just wanted to get home so we cracked on."

The December 23 flight, carrying 200 personnel, had been diverted from RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire to Birmingham because of bad weather. The troops were told they could either wait for coaches to take them back to Brize Norton or else travel home via public transport - in which case they must change into civilian clothes before entering the terminal. Around 50 chose the latter option and, because there was no room in the cabin, most changed outside....
