DON’T put away those long johns just yet as December could be the coldest month ever.
That’s the view of Huddersfield weather expert Paul Stevens who has revealed this month is on course to be a record breaker.
While a minor thaw is coming this weekend the big freeze is set to continue next week with temperatures dropping even lower.
Temperatures so far this month have averaged -1.9°C, almost twice as cold as the last harsh winter in 1981.
If the trend continues it will be the coldest month since records began in 1740.
Paul said: “There’s a long way to go but it could be the coldest on record.
“The first eight days have been the coldest we’ve seen for 100 years.
“The average temperature is six degrees below the normal.
“That might not sound a lot but if you applied it to the whole of the earth we would be in an ice age.
