IT'S 3AM, DO YOU KNOW WHO YOUR PRESIDENT IS?

  • IN 1984, THE PHRASE WHICH CHANGED THE DYNAMIC OF THE RACE WAS "WHERE'S THE BEEF?"
  • THIS YEAR, THE PHRASE MIGHT VERY WELL BE THE ONE IN HILLARY'S ANTI-OBAMA AD: "WHO DO YOU WANT ANSWERING THE WHITE HOUSE PHONE AT 3AM?"
THE AD MIGHT WIN HILLARY THE NOMINATION, AND MCCAIN THE WHITE HOUSE.

HEH.

IT'S 3 A.M., DO YOU KNOW WHO YOUR NEXT PRESIDENT WILL BE?

MCCAIN. IN A BLOWOUT.

SUNNI ARAB NATIONS RATCHETING UP RHETORIC AGAINST SYRIA

IHT:
Several Arab leaders say they may boycott the annual Arab summit meeting scheduled for this month in Damascus because of anger at Syria over its role in Lebanon and ongoing links to Iran.

The measures are part of an intensified campaign against Syria that comes alongside similar moves by the United States, which recently added several new financial sanctions on Syria and sent warships to cruise off the Lebanese coast - a gesture aimed directly at the Syrian government.

"There's a new initiative to completely isolate Syria and weaken its destructive influence in Lebanon," said an adviser to the Saudi government who requested anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue.

"We're not going to pull them away from Iran by talking to them; we're going to take them away from Iran by making them feel the pressure and making them understand that this time it's as real as it can get."

In the past week, Saudi Arabia has recalled its ambassador from Damascus and urged all its citizens to leave Lebanon as soon as possible, indicating that it believes any Saudi here is now a target for Syria or its allies. Last month the Saudi government deposited another $1 billion into Lebanon's central bank in a show of support for Lebanon's government.

Syria's role in Lebanon is rooted in its alliance with Iran and Hezbollah, which it views as crucial weapons against Israel and the West. But most Arab nations, led by Sunni Muslims, view Shiite Iran as a dangerous and implacable foe, and they appear to have given up on luring Syria back into the Arab fold through diplomacy.

The conflict has grown increasingly bitter, with officials of Saudi Arabia and Egypt - with Jordan on board - complaining that Syria is deliberately prolonging the political vacuum in Lebanon through its support for Hezbollah, which opposes the Western-backed government majority. Lebanon has been without a president since late November.

WITHOUT SYRIA, HIZBALLAH CRUMBLES - AND IRAN LOSES TWO KEY ALLIES.
BUT FORCING SYRIA TO PART WITH THE SHIA IRAN WILL BE TOUGH: THEY HAVE SIGNED MANY AGREEMENTS (SOME MORE THIS WEEK) INCLUDING A MUTUAL DEFENSE PACT.

THE ROAD TO TEHRAN GOES THROUGH DAMASCUS - AND THE ROAD TO DAMASCUS GOES THROUGH BEIRUT.

SADLY - FOR AMERICA, THE SUNNI ARAB NATIONS ARE TOUGHER ON SYRIA THAN OBAMA AND THE DEMS!

The AP and the NYTIMES have been caught in another huge anti-McCain lie

THIS IS WHAT THE AP REPORTED:
McCain Flashes Temper at Reporter

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Filed at 6:47 p.m. ET

NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- Republican Sen. John McCain, showing a flash of the temper he is known for, repeatedly cut off a reporter Friday when asked whether he had spoken to Democratic Sen. John Kerry about being his vice president in 2004. ''Everybody knows that I had a private conversation. Everybody knows that, that I had a conversation,'' McCain told the reporter. ''And you know it, too. No. You know it, too. No. You do know. You do know.''

The reporter, Elisabeth Bumiller of The New York Times, was following up on a question McCain had answered at a campaign event Friday morning in Atlanta. Asked if he might consider Kerry as a running mate, since Kerry asked him in 2004, McCain said no.

Afterward, on a campaign flight, Bumiller said she looked in the Times' archives and that McCain had denied talking with Kerry in a May 2004 story.

McCain interrupted, saying that everyone knew he had a private conversation, and he kept interrupting as she tried to follow up. McCain clearly was irate.

SEVEN YEARS AGO THE TALIBAN BEGAN DESTROYING THE BUDDHAS OF BAMIYAN

WIKI:

The statues were destroyed by dynamite over several weeks, starting in early March, carried out in different stages.

Initially, the statues were fired at for several days using anti-aircraft guns and artillery. This damaged them but did not obliterate them.

Then the Taliban placed anti-tank mines at the bottom of the niches, so that when chunks of rock broke off from artillery fire, the statues would fall and be blown up again.

In the end, the Taliban tied ropes around some local Hazara men, lowered them down the cliff face, and forced them to place explosives into holes in the Buddhas.[9]

On March 6, 2001 The Times quoted Mullah Mohammed Omar as stating, "Muslims should be proud of smashing idols. It has given praise to God that we have destroyed them."

He had clearly changed his position from being in favor of the statues to being against them.

During a March 13 interview for Japan's Mainichi Shimbun, Afghan Foreign Minister Wakil Ahmad Mutawakel stated that the destruction was anything but a retaliation against the international community for economic sanctions:

"We are destroying the Buddha statues in accordance with Islamic law and it is purely a religious issue".

[THEY WERE FINALLY DYNAMITED ON 3/21/01.]

  • GLOBAL JIHAD IS PURELY A PROACTIVE RELIGIOUS EFFORT.
  • AND REMEMBER, THESE BUDDHAS WERE DESTROYED BEFORE 9/11.
  • THEIR DESTRUCTION WAS NOT A REACTION TO WESTERN HEGEMONY.

WHEN CONFRONTING THE EVIL PEOPLE AND EVIL IDEOLOGY WHICH CARRIED OUT THESE DASTARDLY ACTS, WE HAVE TWO CHOICES:

  • FIGHT OR SURRENDER.
  • COUNTER-ATTACK OR SUBMIT.
  • LEFT OR RIGHT.

  • DEMOCRAT OR REPUBLICAN.
THE CHOICE IS OURS.

Australia: A Leftist government that slashes welfare payments

The bureaucracy is sacrosanct: Must not fire any of them -- even though firing just one would free up money to pay dozens of welfare recipients. It is clear where the real priorities of a Leftist government lie. The power to control people is what matters -- not helping them. And the "climate change" fairy matters more than the old and the sick, of course. Excerpt below:

LABOR will scrap annual bonuses of $1600 paid to carers as its budget razor gang carves deep into welfare programs to cut spending and curb inflation. It will replace the payments with a higher utilities allowance but will leave the sick and disabled and their carers hundreds of dollars a year worse off. Although Families Minister Jenny Macklin refused to confirm the plan last night, she stressed the payments, created by the Howard government and paid for the past four years, had never been written into budget forward estimates and were "one-off".....

The payment is one of at least 30 Howard government programs, worth $3.6 billion, to be dumped under Labor as it struggles to slice spending to curb inflation it blames on reckless spending and vote-buying by the previous government. Prior to the federal election last November, Labor produced costings of its own election promises along with $5.4 billion in savings to be achieved through scrapping or modifying Howard government programs. The razor gang is striking across all areas of government, with many slashed programs to be replaced by other new payments.

While some, such as the Carers' Bonus, will leave recipients worse off, others will be replaced by more lucrative spending schemes based on changed priorities. For example, Mr Swan will replace the low-emission technology demonstration fund, worth $140 million over four years, with a range of climate change related spending worth significantly more. Similarly, many old rural grants programs are to be replaced by others aimed at helping farmers adapt to climate change. And Labor's abolition of a $359million dental health plan will be countered by more than $600 million in new spending.

Why vote for McCain?

The writer excerpted below makes a good point but I think that McCain's probably more conservative nominations to the Supreme Court are reason enough to vote for him

Many Republicans-this writer included-are not happy with the thought of Senator John McCain as their presidential nominee. Many of these same Republicans are not happy with the Republican Party's drift toward big government and away from conservative principles. Instead of capitalizing on their control of both houses of Congress and the White House and ushering in decades of Republican control of the government, the administration has missed opportunity after opportunity to show real leadership and make government our servant rather than our master. And Senator McCain promises more of the same, with even more of a tilt to the left. Given this, why should conservatives vote for Senator McCain?

The conventional answer is that Senator McCain is the lesser of two evils and, as conservatives, we would be better off with him in the White House than either Senator Obama or Senator Clinton. But would we?

While a McCain administration could be expected to propose less "liberal" legislation and a somewhat less intrusive federal government than either Obama or Clinton, the differences would not be great. If one looks at the net result of legislative and executive initiatives, it could well be the case that more McCain-proposed legislation would be passed than that proposed by a Democratic administration. This would likely be the case if Republicans in the Congress functioned effectively as a "loyal opposition" and stopped the worst of any socialistic initiatives of the liberal Democrats. Those same Republicans would be reluctant to vote against legislation pushed by "their" president.

The question that Senator McCain must answer for doubting conservatives is "Why are we better off with you in the White House than we would be if a Democrat is elected president and Republicans retain enough power in Congress to stop Democrat programs harmful to the country?" Based on McCain's past record and positions, it is not readily apparent that McCain would be significantly better than the alternative. Certainly this is the case until McCain convinces conservatives that he shares many of their views on the critical issues of the day.

ARE PALESTINIANS ORCS?

YES: IT APPEARS THAT THEIR CREED HAS INDEED TRANSFORMED THEM INTO ORCS.

US AND SOUTH KOREAN FIGHTERS INTERCEPT RUSSIAN RECONN JET NEAR KOREA

PUTIN'S PROBING:
A Russian reconnaissance aircraft approached a U.S. aircraft carrier on the eastern waters off the Korean Peninsula Wednesday, entering South Korea's air defense safety zone, a military source said Thursday.

Two U.S. F/A-18 fighters from the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier participating in annual drills by South Korean and American troops successfully intercepted the Russian aircraft, a Tupolev TU-142 BEAR-F and escorted it out of the area, the source said, asking not to be named.

Four F-16 fighters of the South Korean Air Force also conducted maneuvers to support the U.S. fighters, he added.

``The U.S. military first detected the Russian aircraft and carried out counter-measures against it,'' said the source. ``Our fighters subsequently flew patrol maneuvers.''

The Russian plane came within three to five nautical miles and flew at 2,000 feet above the 97,000-ton nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, according to the source.

The Russian aircraft entered the Korea Air Defense Identification Zone (KADIZ), designated by the commander of the U.S. Pacific Air Force Command in 1951 to prevent clashes in the air between countries surrounding the Korean Peninsula, he said.

The zone covers the sky over the country's easternmost Dokdo islets, which Japan has laid claim to.
  • LET THIS BE A REMINDER: PUTIN AND RUSSIA ARE A THREAT TO THE FREEDOM-LOVING WEST.
  • WE MUST BE VERY WARY OF RUSSIA AND THEIR DEALING WITH IRAN AND SYRIA AND CHAVEZ.
PUTIN DOESN'T REALLY MIND IF HE FAILS AT HEGEMONY, BECAUSE DESTABILIZATION WORKS JUST FINE FOR HIM: HE WILL DO JUST ABOUT ANYTHING TO RAISE THE PRICE OF OIL.

The ethical country of China

China has a troubling history of using any means necessary to acquire its critical intellectual property.
The Raw Feed reports:

Prosecutors in Seoul, Korea, indicted an ex-LG employee for spying for a Chinese company in a case they say cost the South Korean economy more than $1 billion. The Chinese company, Changhong-Orion PDP-Chaihong, reportedly paid the LG manager $300,000 per year, an apartment and a car (he was still collecting his LG salary) in exchange for copying 1,182 files from the LG network and giving it to the Chinese company...

The company then used that stolen data to copy LG's plasma display panel production technology. Changhong-Orion PDP-Chaihong plans to start making plasma panels with the stolen technology starting in December.

Re: Final Notice Before the Termination of Our Relationship
Date: "To Be Determined"
(To be filed in your "Permanent Conduct Record")

AS YOU KNOW from our repeated meetings over many years, we have repeatedly done our best to accommodate your incessant demands regarding employment, compensation, housing allowances, health benefits, and other items of mutual interest as we have endeavored to work together on "Project Peace in the Middle East."

We have, with your agreement and assurances of a better performance, given you time, money, professional help, medication and a more than reasonable offer of land for you to live in while you work out "your issues." In the course of these meetings we feel we have been more than forthcoming in our attendance to your "special needs."

From time to time we have accepted your written word that, given adequate resources, you would be working internally to resolve "your issues." We note, for the record, that at no time has your word proven to be worth the paper which we both so ceremoniously signed. Indeed, it has been our bitter experience that the working out of "your issues" most often involves explosive episodes on the streets of our country.

It has come to our attention, through a continuing rain of the body parts of our citizens onto our streets, that "your issues" do not seem to be resolvable through considered and mutually agreeable negotiations. The outcome of these 'negotiations' in the recent past seems to us to be one of we give and you take and then you kill us. We have decided that this is not a peace project that we wish to continue.

HOW DO YOU SAY "AXIS OF EVIL" IN SPANISH?

BBC: Nicaragua cuts ties with Colombia
Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega - 6 March 2008 Nicaragua's President Daniel Ortega says he is breaking off diplomatic relations with Colombia.

The move comes amid a growing crisis over a Colombian raid into Ecuador to kill leftist Farc rebels.

Venezuela and Ecuador have already broken off diplomatic ties and moved troops to their borders with Colombia.

Mr Ortega said "we are breaking off relations because of the political terrorism" carried out by Colombian President Alvaro Uribe.

He made the announcement in his capital, Managua, with Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa at his side.

Mr Correa is on a tour of Latin American capitals to rally opposition to Colombia's cross-border raid on Saturday.

... Colombia has waged a four-decade conflict with Farc rebels who finance themselves through the cocaine trade and by kidnapping hostages for ransom or political gain.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez had become involved in mediation efforts to free Farc-held hostages in Colombia, securing the release of six this year.

He branded the Colombian raid a "war crime", adding that Bogota, which receives billions of dollars in aid from Washington to fight drug-trafficking, was just a "lackey of United States imperialism".

He dismissed Colombian claims that a laptop found during its raid on the rebel camp in Ecuador held files indicating that Venezuela had given the Farc $300m (£150m).

TERRORIST ATTACK AT MERCAZ HARAV LEAVES 8 MURDERED

More prices paid for "peace":
JERUSALEM (AP) - A gunman infiltrated a Jewish seminary in Jerusalem and opened fire in a library Thursday night, killing at least seven people, officials said.
On TV, they said it was eight dead. Absolutely tragic and abominable.
Rescue workers said at least 10 people were wounded. Government spokesman Daniel Seaman and police said there was only one gunman though initial reports said there were two. [...]

The attack came a day after Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice persuaded moderate Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to return to peace talks with Israel and on the same day Egyptian officials were trying to mediate a truce between Gaza militants and Israel.

Abbas suspended the talks after Israel launched a military offensive against Gaza militants barraging southern Israel with rockets. Palestinian officials say more than 120 were killed in Gaza during the weeklong operation. Four Israelis were also killed.
Note that despite what they say here, it's not clear if Abbas actually agreed with Rice about resuming: according to McClatchy-Tribune (via The American Thinker), he rebuffed her pleas.
Yitzhak Dadon, a seminary student, said he was armed with a rifle and waited on the roof of a nearby building during the attack.

"He came out of the library spraying automatic fire. ... The terrorist came to the entrance and I shot him twice in the head," he said.

Medic Yaron Tzuker said he arrived as the gunfire was still going on.

"They were still shooting when we got here," he told Channel 10 TV. "We took cover and the ambulance was hit. It's horrible inside - dead bodies and wounded - it's horrific."

Another witness told Israel TV that he heard both single shots and automatic gunfire from inside the building, and it lasted for about 10 minutes.

Jerusalem police spokesman Shmuel Ben Ruby said one of the gunmen who attacked the seminary was wearing what at first appeared to be an explosives vest but turned out to be a belt holding extra ammunition.

"One or two terrorists infiltrated the Mercaz Harav seminary and opened fire in all directions," the police spokesman said. "One terrorist was killed in an exchange of fire, and apparently he had an explosives belt."

Hundreds of police surrounded the area and searched the campus as ambulances raced to the scene. Scores of seminary students spilled out onto the sidewalk and street outside after they were evacuated.

"There are at least seven killed and 10 people wounded," said Eli Dein, director of Israel's rescue service.

An hour after the attack, medics began removing the dead from the building, taking them away in ambulances. [...]

"It's very sad tonight in Jerusalem. Many people were killed in the heart of Jerusalem," Jerusalem Mayor Uri Lupolianski.
Some of the blame, of course, will have to be put upon the shoulders of Ehud Olmert for allowing this to continue.

THREE HELD IN MANILA-BASED BOMB PLOT AGAINST U.S. AND ISRAELI EMBASSIES

The plot to destroy the World Trade Center was hatched by a cell of Islamic terrorists based in the Phillipines. Today news comes that such Phillipine-based cells are still active and seeking to attack American interests:

Philippine authorities say they have arrested three suspected Middle Eastern
militants suspected of involvement in a plot to bomb the Israeli and three other
foreign embassies in Manila.

Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita says one man was arrested in Manila, while the others were separately captured recently in the south.

"There is a high probability that they are involved in some kind of plan to sow trouble," Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita told reporters on the sidelines of an annual anti-terrorism and business security conference.

One of the militants was arrested in Manila and the two others were separately captured in the southern Philippines recently.

Ermita refused to provide details, but two senior Filipino security officials told The Associated Press that investigators were verifying intelligence information that the three may have been involved in an active plot to bomb the U.S., British, Australian and Israeli embassies in Manila.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.

Authorities believe the three may have links with the Indonesia-based militant group Jemaah Islamiyah and the Abu Sayyaf, a small but violent southern Philippine-based group blacklisted by Washington as a terror organization.

Both groups have been blamed for deadly bomb attacks, including the February 2004 bombing of a ferry in Manila Bay that killed 116 people in the country's worst terrorist attack.

Funding for the plot has been secured, indicating that the planned attack against any of the embassies may already be in an advanced stage, one of the security officials said, adding that all the embassies concerned have been notified.

At least one of the three suspected militants identified himself as Jordanian, but investigators were trying to verify their identities. One was arrested at a Manila airport Feb. 15 and follow-up operations were under way, he said.

A Jordanian terrorist, working in the Phillipines, on behalf of an Indonesia-based Muslim terrorist group, plotting to attack American and Israeli embassies.

And, some doubt whether we are really engaged in a global war against Islamofascism.

3 ARABS IN EAST JERUSALEM INDICTED FOR ATTACK ON MUNICIPAL WORKERS

A few days ago, there was an attempted lynch by Arabs in east Jerusalem against two municipal workers travelling there in their car. Now, three men have been arrested in the case:
(IsraelNN.com) Three Arab men from Jerusalem have been indicted for an attack on two municipal workers earlier in the week. The men were indicted for deliberately endangering life in a transportation lane, assault, and attacking public employees.

The men were part of a group that attacked two municipal inspectors on Monday as they drove on Salah A-Din Street in eastern Jerusalem. The group threw rocks at the inspectors’ car, breaking its windows, and attacked the vehicle with metal poles. The workers managed to escape by driving briefly on the sidewalk. One of the workers later described the incident as an attempted lynch.
Those men should be made to do hard labor in prison for their crime.

GAZA: MORE FACTS ON THE GROUND!

Spindoctors, politicians and bloggers can do what they want with statistics and 2nd hand quotes but facts are hard to argue with.

What does that tell you? We report - you decide.

ATTEMPTED TERRORIST ATTACK IN TIMES SQUARE ARMY RECRUITMENT CENTER

Terrorist activity is lurking in the Big Apple. No one was in the army center when it happened, but the bomb itself was definitely felt nearby:
NEW YORK (AP) - A small bomb caused minor damage to an empty military recruiting station in Times Square early Thursday, shaking guests in hotel rooms high above "the crossroads of the world."

Police blocked off the area to investigate the explosion, which occurred at about 3:45 a.m. No one was injured. The blast left a gaping hole in the front window and shattered a glass door, twisting and blackening its metal frame.

Authorities said at a news conference that a witness saw a person on a bicycle wearing a backpack and acting suspiciously, but that no one saw a person place the device in front of the recruiting center.

"If it is something that's directed toward American troops than it's something that's taken very seriously and is pretty unfortunate," said Army Capt. Charlie Jaquillard, who is the commander of Army recruiting in Manhattan.

He said no one was inside the station, where the Marines, Air Force and Navy also recruit.

Witnesses staying at a Marriott hotel four blocks away said they could feel the building shake with the blast.

"I was up on the 44th floor and I could feel it. It was a big bang," said Darla Peck, 25, of Portland, Ore.

"It shook the building. I thought it could have been thunder, but I looked down and there was a massive plume of smoke so I knew it was an explosion," said Terry Leighton, 48, of London, who was staying on the 21st floor of the Marriott.

Members of the police department's bomb squad and fire officials gathered outside the station in the early morning darkness, and police cars and yellow tape blocked drivers - most of them behind the wheels of taxicabs - from entering one of the world's busiest crossroads. Police began allowing some traffic through around the start of rush hour.
I wonder if this had anything to do with that case involving a soldier who made a video that showed him tossing a puppy off a cliff, though it's possible that the animal was a fake one? I don't know, but if it is, it shows that there are monstrous leftists out there who're willing to turn to savagery over their crazy beliefs.

Movie About Religion of Peace Raises Terrorist Attack Level

Increased to "substantial":
AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - The Netherlands is to raise its national risk level of a terrorist attack to "substantial", partly due to a new film made by a politician that is expected to be critical of the Koran, media reported on Thursday.

The justice minister is expected to send parliament an updated threat assessment later in the day, also citing a heightened terrorism threat level around the world, unnamed cabinet sources told ANP news agency.

The level had been at "substantial" before as religious and racial tensions simmered after an Islamic militant killed director Theo Van Gogh in 2004 over a separate film he made accusing Islam of condoning violence against women.
Do you see the irony?

Anyway, this is a golden opportunity for muslims and muslim leaders to make a fool of Geert Wilders.

In fact, they, as worshipers of islam, have a responsability and an obligation to prove Mr. Wilders wrong.

I urge every muslim to follow the National Moroccan Council's advise:
"We will have succeeded if, after the film, Mr. Wilders is frustrated," chairman, Mohamed Rabbae said at a news conference in January. "If he sees there are no riots and Muslims are cleverer and more democratic than he thinks."
Shouldn't be too hard to accomplish in a civilized world.

Update: The less favorable reaction would be something like this:

Salah Al-Din Brigades Spokesman on Al-Jazeera Calls on Muslims to Bomb, Burn Down Danish Embassies and Kidnap Danish Ambassadors to Slaughter Them at Muhammad's Tomb

You see, it doesn't fit in with the "Religion of Peace"-thingie...

KEEPING THE MONEY HERE

Item in the March 6, 2008 edition of the Washington Post:
Remittances Drop as U.S. Jobs Slow

Mexicans working abroad, mostly in the United States, reduced money transfers to their families at home at a record pace in January as a U.S. housing slump squeezed construction employment.

Remittances, the second-biggest source of dollar flows into Mexico after oil receipts, fell 5.9 percent in January compared with January 2007, to $1.65 billion, Mexico's central bank said. It was the biggest drop since Banco de Mexico began records in 1995.
Our government wouldn't put a stop to such money transfers. Our government wouldn't track those strip-mall storefronts executing the transfers to see how many illegal invaders were using the facilities to drain the U.S. economy. Even local governments would not enforce zoning regulations, thereby allowing 20+ immigrants to live in a single-family home. But economic reality has caused a slowdown in propping up the economy of Mexico.

Think of it as the silver lining to the cloud of the economic downturn in the construction industry.

Some Experts Doubt Obesity Epidemic

Go on, have another doughnut. According to some experts whose views are public health heresy, the jury is still out on how dangerous it is to be fat. "The obesity epidemic has absolutely been exaggerated," said Dr. Vincent Marks, emeritus professor of clinical biochemistry at the University of Surrey. Marks is among a minority of skeptics who doubt the severity of the obesity problem. They claim that the data about the dangers of obesity are mixed and there is little proof that being fat causes problems including high blood pressure, heart disease and cancer. Such views contradict nearly everything doctors have been saying for years.

Being fat has long been blamed for conditions like diabetes, which can lead to heart, kidney and nerve diseases. There is also increasing evidence that certain cancers may be linked to weight gain. "The evidence linking obesity to diabetes and cardiovascular disease is very strong," said Dr. James Hill, director of the Center for Human Nutrition at the University of Colorado. "Type two diabetes rarely happens in people who aren't obese."

But obesity contrarians say that there's no data proving why being fat - in itself - would be dangerous. "There's no good causal connection," said Eric Oliver, author of Fat Politics and a political science professor at the University of Chicago. Blaming obesity for diabetes and heart attacks, Oliver says, is like blaming lung cancer on bad breath rather than on smoking. Excess weight may actually be a red herring, Oliver says, since other factors like exercise, diet or genetic predispositions towards diseases are harder to measure than weight.

In addition to questioning the dangers of being fat, researchers like Marks also criticize oft-repeated alarmist projections about the rise in obesity - like the British government's warning that nearly half of Britain will be obese by 2050. Those simply aren't based on good evidence, they say. According to national health statistics released last month, from 1993 to 2006, "relatively little change" was noted in weight gain, with men and women gaining an average of about 4 kilograms (9 pounds). In children, no significant gains were recorded.

The main problem, obesity skeptics say, is that too many people are considered fat, with the obese and overweight often lumped together. "Being moderately plump is not a health disadvantage," Marks said. "Some overweight people may not look svelte, but they may be perfectly healthy." As defined by the World Health Organization, anyone with a body mass index above 25 is overweight, and anyone above 30 is obese. Most experts agree the distinctions are imperfect and somewhat arbitrary.

Moreover, Marks and others point to research showing the benefits of a few extra kilos (pounds). In 2005, Katherine Flegal of the United States' Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association, finding that overweight people typically live longer than normal-weight people. More than a dozen other studies have come to the same conclusion.

Outrage ensued. Prominent health experts called the research flawed and worried that people would gleefully supersize their meals. "I think some experts found it disturbing that we actually said that overweight people have a lower death risk," Flegal said. In other research, Flegal and colleagues found there to be almost no link between death rates and weight. "The relationship between weight and disease and survival is very complex and we don't have a good handle on why some of these things are related and others are not," Flegal said. She suggested that being fat may help you survive some conditions, but not others.

Doctors have long struggled to explain the obesity paradox - the mystery that in certain conditions like heart attacks, fat patients often have better odds of surviving than thin people. Some experts hypothesize that fat peoples' hearts already work harder than those of thin people, thus giving them a natural edge when their bodies are stressed. "We don't want people to think it's ok to be heavier," said Hill. "But not everybody who gains weight is going to get heart disease or diabetes," he said.

Some obesity skeptics question the motives of experts who make dire predictions about obesity. With millions of dollars for obesity researchers, an industry of anti-fat drugs, and a boom in the number of doctors offering surgeries like stomach-stapling, the more fat people there are, the more profits there will be in selling them solutions.

Experts on both sides of the obesity debate have often criticized WHO's overweight and obesity measures, saying they are too low. When WHO defined the body mass index scores constituting normal, overweight and obese, they appeared to be the result of an independent expert committee convened by WHO. Yet the 1997 Geneva consultation was held jointly with the International Obesity Task Force, an advocacy group whose self-described mission is "to inform the world about the urgency of the (obesity) problem."

According to the task force's most recent available annual report, more than 70 percent of their funding came from Abbott Laboratories and F. Hoffman La-Roche, companies which make top-selling anti-fat pills. The task force remains one of Europe's most influential obesity advocacy groups and continues to work closely with WHO.

The blurred lines between pharmaceutical money and obesity groups have also caused concern in Britain. In 2006, one of the country's top obesity doctors quit the organization he founded to combat obesity, the National Obesity Forum, complaining that its goals had been skewed by drug money. "There's not a lot of money in trying to debunk obesity, but a huge amount in making sure it stays a big problem," said Patrick Basham, a professor of health care policy at Johns Hopkins University.

Still, while skeptics insist that obesity warnings must be taken with a grain of salt, nearly all agree that while a little bit of extra padding may not be too deadly, too much almost certainly is. "The vast majority of people who get labeled under the obesity epidemic are well under 300 pounds and probably are not facing big health consequences," Oliver said. "It's the morbidly obese people who should be worried."

More from Liberal Fascism by Jonah Goldberg -- on big business colluding with socialism

They did it in Fascist Italy and in Hitler's Germany and they do it now in the USA. And Adam Smith warned us about it long ago: "Men of the same profession never gather together except to conspire against the general public". Excerpt below from chapter 8, "Liberal Fascist Economics"

So long as some firms are willing to prostitute themselves to Uncle Sam, every business feels the pressure to become a whore.... This is the hidden story of big business from the railroads of the nineteenth century, to the meatpacking industry under Teddy Roosevelt, to the outrageous cartel of "Big Tobacco" today: supposedly right-wing corporations work hand in glove with progressive politicians and bureaucrats in both parties to exclude small businesses, limit competition, ensure market share and prices, and generally work as government by proxy. Big business rallied behind LBJ, not the objectively free-enterprise Barry Goldwater. Free marketeers often decry Richard Nixon's wage and price controls, but what is usually forgotten is that big business cheered them

...There's no sector of the American economy more suffused with corporatism than agriculture. Indeed, both Democrats and Republicans are decidedly fascistic when it comes to the "family farmer," pretending that their policies are preserving some traditional voelkisch lifestyle while in reality they're subsidizing enormous corporations.

But corporatism is only part of the story. Just as corporations were enmeshed in the larger Nazi Gleichschaltung, supposedly right-wing big business is central to the progressive coordination of contemporary society. If big business is so right-wing, why do huge banks fund liberal and left-wing charities, activists, and advocacy groups, then brag about it in commercials and publicity campaigns? How to explain that there's virtually no major issue in the culture wars - from abortion to gay marriage to affirmative action - where big business has played a major role on the American right while there are dozens of examples of corporations supporting the liberal side?

Indeed, the myth of the right-wing corporation allows the media to tighten liberalism's grip on both corporations and the culture. John McCain perfectly symbolizes this catch-22 of modern liberalism. McCain despises the corrupting effect of "big money" in politics, but he is also a major advocate of increased government regulation of business. Apparently he cannot see that the more government regulates business, the more business is going to take an interest in "regulating" government. Instead, he has concluded that he should try to regulate political speech, which is like decrying the size of the garbage dump and deciding the best thing to do is regulate the flies.

These speech regulations in turn give an unfair advantage to some very big businesses - media conglomerates, movie studios, and such - to express their views in ways exempt from government censorship. It's no surprise that some of these outlets tend to celebrate McCain's genius and courage and use their megaphones to expand on the need for him to go even further and for other politicians to follow his lead. Of course, this dynamic is much larger than mere regulation. The New York Times is pro-choice and supports pro-choice candidates - openly on its editorial pages, more subtly in its news pages. Pro-life groups need to pay to get their views across, but such paid advertising is heavily regulated, thanks to McCain, at exactly the moment it might influence people - that is, near Election Day. One can replace abortion with gun control, gay marriage, environmentalism, affirmative action, immigration, and other issues, and the dynamic remains the same.

That is how the liberal Gleichschaltung works; contrary voices are regulated, barred, banned when possible, mocked and marginalized when not, Progressive voices are encouraged, lionized, amplified - in the name of "diversity," or "liberation," or "unity," and, most of all, "progress."

....In the brave new corporatism, we are all "partners" after all. Environmentalism in particular offers a number of eerie parallels to fascist practices, including as an overarching rationale for corporatist policies. According to generic fascism, an atmosphere of crisis must be maintained in order to circumvent conventional rules. Today, while Hollywood and the press relentlessly hype the threat of global warming, big business works assiduously to form alliances and partnerships with government as if the fight against global warming were the moral equivalent of war. Indeed, Al Gore - who makes much of such public-private partnerships - claims that global warming is equivalent to the Holocaust and anybody who denies it is the moral equivalent of a Holocaust denier.

GAZA & SINGAPORE: TAB, January 2007

I am re-publishing this post from January 2007, because it amplifies the points made by Reliapundit today regarding the horrible conditions in Gaza, that are the direct result of the thuggery of the jihadists. The original post follows:

The Belmont Club describes the nascent Palestinian State this way:
Statesmen all over the world have paid homage to it. It's leadership has been praised and defended by Jimmy Carter. Charities have been established to support it. Fund raising in its name takes place every day. It has been provided with security training and weaponry by the International Community. If any country deserves to be called the proud creation of enlightened diplomacy and peacemaking, this is is it.
And then he points to Caroline Glick's thoughtful and heart-rending essay, "Welcome to Palestine." This is part of what she has to say:

And so it is that as statesmen and activists worldwide loudly proclaim their commitment to establishing the sovereign State of Palestine, they miss the fact that Palestine exists. And it is a nightmare.

In the State of Palestine 88 percent of the public feels insecure. Perhaps the other 12 percent are members of the multitude of regular and irregular militias. For in the State of Palestine the ratio of police/militiamen/men-under-arms to civilians is higher than in any other country on earth.

In the State of Palestine, two-year-olds are killed and no one cares. Children are woken up in the middle of the night and murdered in front of their parents. Worshipers in mosques are gunned down by terrorists who attend competing mosques. And no one cares. No international human rights groups publish reports calling for an end to the slaughter. No UN body condemns anyone or sends a fact-finding mission to investigate the murders.

In the State of Palestine, women are stripped naked and forced to march in the streets to humiliate their husbands. Ambulances are stopped on the way to hospitals and wounded are shot in cold blood. Terrorists enter operating rooms in hospitals and unplug patients from life-support machines.

In the State of Palestine, people are kidnapped from their homes in broad daylight and in front of the television cameras. This is the case because the kidnappers themselves are cameramen. Indeed, their commanders often run television stations. And because terror commanders run television stations in the State of Palestine, it should not be surprising that they bomb the competition's television stations.

Read.The.Whole.Thing.

Wretchard also links to a 2006 essay by Spengler, in the Asia Times, who argues that the Palestinian State has no possible economic basis, other than extortion:
No peace agreement ever will emerge between Israel and the Palestinians, I believe, because economics should have dispersed the Palestinian population more than half a century ago. Mechanization of agriculture, rather than Zionist political aims, began displacing the rural Arab population in the 1930s, I observed in another location. The Zionist agency bought farms from absentee landlords, displaced the fellaheen engaged in near-subsistence agriculture, and made the land profitable and productive. From an economic standpoint, that is, the Palestinians were Okies, but with no California to go to. This led to the 1936-39 Arab uprising against the British Mandate and Jewish settlement.

Rather than disperse gradually like other agrarian populations, the Palestinian Arabs became wards of the United Nations after the 1947-48 War of Independence. Their numbers surged because of better medical care and nutrition than they previously enjoyed as well as child subsidies. That is why the 700,000 Arabs who fled or were driven from Israel grew into the 4 million "refugees" registered with the UN in 2002. I place the term "refugees" in quotation marks because in no other case has the third generation following a population transfer retained official refugee status.

Despite the best intentions of Shimon Peres and the Israeli socialists, it seems delusional to imagine that any combination of light industry and tourism will provide a livelihood for a Palestine with 5 million inhabitants (including the non-refugee West Bank population). The Palestinian entity cannot exist without subsidies, and it cannot extract subsidies from the West or from the Muslim world without constituting a military threat. The existential choices for Palestinians come down to dispersal or perpetual war.
Spengler is always interesting, but I think he is wrong to think that the West Bank and Gaza are not capable of providing a living to millions of people.

In fact, I think that the territory of Gaza alone would make a handsome state if its inhabitants would pull up their socks and devote themselves to building it up. Let's just compare Gaza and Singapore, and see if that isn't the case.

When the predominantly Chinese population of Singapore seceded from the Malaysian Federation in 1963, many voices predicted that the tiny island nation would never make it. How could it?

But the Singaporeans showed that they could make it, becoming one of the great Asian economic tigers. The citizens of Gaza could do the same thing.

Let's use the data in the CIA's World Fact Book to make a comparison.

The land area of The Gaza Strip is 360 square kilometers; Singapore's land area is 683 square kilometers. So Singapore is bigger.

But the population of Singapore ( 4,492,150) is also bigger than the population of Gaza (1,428,757), so that the population density is similar. The median age in Singapore is 37, however, while the median age in Gaza is only 15. That does mean more children, who are less able to contribute economically.

Interestingly enough, the economies of Gaza and Singapore have similar overall structures. Singapore's economy is 34% industrial, and 66% service; Gaza's economy is 8% agricultural, 18% industrial, and 74% service.

Of course, Singapore's economy is larger, with a per capita income of $30,900, while Gaza's per capita income is only $1,500.

That's quite a difference. The unemployment rate in Gaza is 31%, ten times as high as in Singapore, and 80% of Gazans are in poverty.

The population of Singapore exhibits much more ethnic and cultural diversity ( Chinese 76.8%, Malay 13.9%, Indian 7.9%, other 1.4%) than the population of Gaza (Arab 99.4%), but both populations are literate: the literacy rate in Singapore is 92.5% (96.6% male, 88.6% female) whereas in Gaza, the literacy rate is 91.9% (96.3% male, 87.4% female),

And with 349,000 land lines and 1,095,000 cell phones, it seems that everyone in Gaza is connected. In Singapore, the numbers are equivalent, with 1,848,000 land lines and 4,385,000 cell phones.

The big difference seems to be that Singaporeans do not expect the rest of the world to support them, but actually do economic work.

But Gaza has enough population and enough resources to make an economic go of it - if they really wanted to. For example, the $15,000,000 worth of high-tech agricultural greenhouses that Bill Gates paid for, so that the Israelis who built them and ran them would leave them behind when they were expelled from Gaza, would have provided jobs and income -- if the Palestinians had not looted and trashed them as soon as they could.

Gaza also has Mediterranean beaches. With some investment and a lot of sweat equity, they could probably form the basis for a lovely and competitive resort. There are surely archaeological sites that could be developed as tourist attractions. Hotels and other tourist attractions would provide the cash flow needed to make investments in light industry, and a seaport might enable Gaza to serve as a transit hub for, among other things, oil that could be piped in from Arabia.

A desalination plant would enable a wide variety of agricultural businesses to thrive. High profit crops such as cut flowers and exotic fruits would surely be welcomed in the world market.

Light manufacturing might include clothing, books and magazines, electronics, and a wide variety of household goods.

And that's only Gaza. The resources of Judea and Samaria are much greater, particularly in terms of archaeological and historic sites that should be able to attract vast numbers of Christian tourists, in particular.

It is thus a great misfortune for the Arab people of the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, that the world has allowed gangsters and terrorists to declare themselves their leaders, spokesmen, and governors. That is what is keeping the Palestinians in poverty.

The Jordanian administration in the West Bank (1948-1967) allowed the economy to stagnate, and did not build a single university. During the pre-Oslo Israeli administration (1967-1990), the per capita income of the West Bank doubled and it was higher than per capita income in Jordan or Egypt (the West Bank had one of the fastest growing economies in the world) -- and several universities were founded.

With an honest, non-gangster, non-terrorist, non-jihadist administration, that would give up its cherished dream of massacring all the Jews in Israel, either the Gaza Strip alone or the Gaza Strip and the West Bank could become a thriving economy.

It's as simple as that.

LEFTIST "RIGHTS" GROUPS MAKE INADVERTANT ADMISSION: GAZA WAS BETTER DURING OCCUPATION

BBC:Gaza conditions 'at 40-year low'
The groups say a battered, starved Gaza cannot be a peace partner
Gaza girls protest at Israeli measures Gaza's humanitarian situation is at its worst since Israel occupied the territory in 1967, say UK-based human rights and development groups.

They include Amnesty International, Save the Children, Cafod, Care International and Christian Aid.

They criticise Israel's blockade on Gaza as illegal collective punishment which fails to deliver security.

Israel says its military action and other measures are lawful and needed to stop rocket attacks from Gaza.

Israel pulled its troops and settlers out of the Gaza Strip in 2005, but retains control over Gaza's airspace and coastline, and over its own border with the territory.

... "Unless the blockade ends now, it will be impossible to pull Gaza back from the brink of this disaster and any hopes for peace in the region will be dashed," said Geoffrey Dennis, of Care International UK.

Last week Israeli forces launched a bloody and destructive raid in northern Gaza, in which more than 120 Palestinians - including many civilians - were killed.

Israel says the measures are designed to stamp out frequent rocket fire by Palestinian militants.

Recent rocket attacks have hit deeper into southern Israel, reaching Ashkelon, the closest large Israeli city to the Gaza Strip.

Occupying power

The UK-based groups agree that Israel has the right and obligation to protect its citizens...
  • WHILE UNDER ISRAELI CONTROL AND BEFORE ANY AUTONOMY - FROM 1967-1990 - GAZA AND THE WEST BANK HAD ONE OF THE FASTEST GROWING ECONOMIES IN THE WORLD.
  • THEN CAME OSLO AND ARAFAT AND ISLAMO-THUGGERY, AND THE POVERTY RETURNED.
  • PROSPERITY IS A BY-PRODUCT LIBERTY AND THE RULE OF LAW.
  • GAZANS - A MILLION PLUS ABLE BODIED PEOPLE- SHOULD BE ABLE TO PROSPER WITHOUT DEPENDENCY ON ISRAEL OR INTERNATIONAL AID; THAT THEY CANNOT SAYS MORE ABOUT THEIR ETHOS THAN ISRAEL OR ANYONE ELSE.
  • THE GAZANS SHOULD FOCUS ON MAKING A BETTER LIFE FOR THEIR KIDS AND NOT GENOCIDE AGAINST JEWS.
GAZA WILL PROSPER ONLY WHEN LIBERATED FROM ISLAMO-THUGGERY.

AMERICA MUST DRILL FOR MORE OIL HERE AT HOME - NOW!

THE OIL EXTRACTING NATIONS ARE GETTING RICHER AND RICHER AND RICHER:

BREITBART:
Moscow has overtaken New York City as home to the most billionaires, according to Forbes magazine, with 74 of the super-rich elite now counting the Russian capital as their home.

DUBAI'S SKYINE IS GROWING LIKE CRAZY!

SAUDI ARABIA'S TOO!

WHY ISN'T THE USA GETTING RICH ON OIL - WE HAVE THE 11TH LARGEST RESERVES IN THE WORLD?!?

Well, one reason is that we haven't drilled for ANY oil in ANWR, or off the coast of California or off the coast of Florida for DECADES.

This means we are not reaping as much of the income off our PROVEN RESERVES as we might be. So our GDP is lowered, AND AS IF THAT WASN'T ENOUGH... as a result we must buy more from overseas -- a lot from folks like Chavez.

We are making our selves, OUR NATION, POORER - and other nations RICHER.

And many of those nations are friendlier to our enemies than to us, in a lot of ways...

We should put an end to their oil monopoly. And we can. YES, WE CAN! And it's safe and clean:
  • Canada is drilling for oil right over the border from ANWR; their caribou don't mind; why should ours!?
  • None of of the off-chore oil rigs leaked as a result of Katrina, so drilling off the coast of Florida is absolutely safe and clean.
  • And the UK and Norway have been drilling in the North Sea for decades - which is much rougher than the pacific off the coast of California, so there's NO EXCUSE for NOT drilling there, too.
ALSO: If we drill in these places then we will lower the coast of energy WORLDWIDE and that will help the world's economy.

IT'S A WIN-WIN-WIN-WIN-WIN:

We make more money; we send less overseas to unsavory nations; we lower our costs and the energy costs of the whole world - and it doen;t harm the environment one iddy-biddy bit.

SO WHY DON'T WE DO THIS!?
  • THE LIBERAL DEMOCRATS HAVE BLOCKED IT YEAR AFTER YEAR.
  • THEY'RE THE MAIN REASON WE ARE SENDING SO MANY DOLLARS OVERSEAS FOR OIL, AND WHY IT'S SO EXPENSIVE.
But I don't just blame them. I BLAME BUSH!

Where's the leadership from Bush!?

WHY HASN'T MCCAIN SPOKEN OUT ABOUT THIS!?

Where's the freakin' Congressional GOP!?

Useless.
