IHT PUBLISHES REPUGNANT SOPHISTICATED EXCUSES FOR LEGALLY MANDATED IRANIAN SEXISM

One of the most emailed stories on the IHT website today is this little bit of propaganda about Iran:

The instructor held up an unfurled green condom as she lectured a dozen Iranian brides-to-be on details of family planning. But birth control was only one aspect of the class, provided by the government and mandatory for all couples before marriage. The other was about sex, and the message from the state was that women should enjoy themselves as much as men and that men needed to be patient, because women need more time to become aroused. This is not the picture of Iran that filters out across the world

Sophistication-mania! If you're intelligent and liberal enough, you too can tell all your cocktail party friends about how wrong, misguided, and just plain unfair the Likudnik AIPAC neo-con characterization of Iran is. Sure, they have a legal system where prepubescent girls are sold and raped under Iran's temporary marriage laws, but they also tell men to take their time. So at least we know that the enslaved prepubescent girls are are enjoying themselves. Except they're not because, you know, they're prepubescent girls who are getting sold and raped. But if it wasn't for that!

And then there's that whole inconvenient "they kill gay people for being gay" thing. You have to wonder why - of all the things that a journalist could choose to write about - someone would make it their business to make the Iranian regime look good to the outside world. "They're just telling the truth" is not a defense - there are literally an infinite number of true things that anyone can write about anything world, and at least a couple dozen of those are interesting. Michael Slackman and the IHT choose to propagandize for the Iranian regime - to present a different "picture of Iran" than the more accurate one of enslaved women and murdered gay teenagers.

HEY, WHERE'S ALL THAT HAMAS LAW AND ORDER WE WERE PROMISED?

We've been hearing a lot of "at least Hamas has brought law and order to the streets of Gaza." Yeah? Let's see how that's going:

Hamas security men scuffled with rowdy Fatah supporters, fired in the air and briefly detained journalists at a protest against the Islamic group's rule in the Strip.... The protesters converged on a former Fatah compound in Gaza City now occupied by Hamas, chanting pro-Fatah slogans, throwing stones and empty bottles and waving yellow Fatah flags. It was the second time in recent weeks that Hamas men have clashed violently with Fatah protesters - and could signal possible cracks in Hamas's two-month-old ironclad rule of Gaza... When several Hamas security men roughed up a Reuters TV cameraman filming the protest and tried to confiscate his camera, protesters surrounded the Hamas men, beat them to the ground and prevented the cameraman's arrest. The demonstrators cursed the Hamas men, calling them "Shiites" - a derogatory allusion to Hamas' alliance with the hardline Shiite Muslim regime in Iran.

Notice that even the relatively uneducated Gaza residents - with their relative lack of Western media - know enough to think that the center-left "Shiites and Sunnis don't cooperate" meme is idiotic. So there are two ways to take this post. One is to play up the education angle, and punchline with something like "apparently even the most hysterical criticisms of the American educational system are true: a total lack of schooling really does leave you smarter than any amount of what passes as advantaged education." The other way is to go with the Western media angle, and make is something like "we're not saying that the absence of CNN and the NYT makes Gaza residents not totally misguided about the reality of the Middle East. That would be a post hoc fallacy, and we've got exams on argumentation theory coming up later this afternoon. But there does appear to be, as the social scientists say, something of a correlation". But it's shaping up to be an incredibly long week, and it's way too early in the morning to be making tough decisions. So on this one, you get to choose your own adventure.

JOURNALISTS CONFUSED - IS JERI THOMPSON A DUMB BIMBO OR AN EVIL GENIUS?

The slow transition from "Jeri Thompson is a bimbo" through "isn't it totally weird how lots of people may or may not think Jeri Thompson is a bimbo" to "Jeri Thompson is an evil genius" is almost complete:

The most obvious heir to a position of Karl Rove-like influence is Mark Penn, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's top political adviser... On the Republican side, Jeri Thompson, wife of former senator Fred D. Thompson of Tennessee, has become controversial because of her heavy involvement in the day-to-day operations of her husband's potential campaign despite having relatively little political experience.

You can see the tension - is she an interfering wench or the next leftist Darth Vader photoshop? It depends on how well the Thompson campaign does. If the left can't explain Thompson's popularity (because why would anyone support Republicans?), the meme will slide to "evil genius". If the Thompson campaign flounders, the ostensible progressives on the left will be more than happy to settle for "see, we told you she was a sorority girl gender traitor bimbo". Seething and resentful hypocrisy - always in fashion.

AP: IDF MURDERS CIVILIAN WHO INNOCENTLY WANDERED UP TO HIS ROOF IN THE MIDDLE OF A FIREFIGHT

The IDF is finally beginning to consider doing the minimum to respond to months of rocket fire against Israeli schools and hospitals. There is a brutal firefight going on in the Gaza Strip right now. Israeli soldiers are being engaged by Hamas soldiers and Islamic Jihad terrorists who are armed with weapons that have shockingly - shockingly - slipped into the Strip in the last month or so. A single airstrike took out six Islamic Jihad members - these are not random terrorists firing from the inside of windows. These are organized armed units firing rockets and automatic weapons at armed Israeli units. Except apparently for this innocent civilian. According to the AP, he just happened to wander onto his roof - where snipers hang out - at the time of the firefight. He was then gunned down by heartless Zionists:

Palestinian medical officials said a second civilian, Ibrahim al-Shami, 40, was fatally shot by soldiers when he went out onto the roof of his house and that of a total of 15 people wounded, seven were civilians. The army often carries out raids into Gaza to target militants and to thwart rocket fire toward Israeli towns.

You think he was up there fixing his satellite dish or something? We're even more impressed by the AFP version of events, which fails to mention that this undoubtedly innocent man just happened to be on a rooftop during a firefight. AFP stringer Sakher Abu El Oun gallantly limits himself to merely noting that, you know, those Israelis - they kill civilians. The JPost roundup on this gets a statement from the IDF to the effect that the satellite-dish repairmen was a gunman - believe it or not, journalists are supposed to print denials from official sources, yes? Certainly they always do when Hezbollah or Hamas is like "we didn't do it even though there are pictures that we did it". Wonder how the Israeli clarification slipped through.

THE MEDIA LIES- CIVILIANS IN GAZA MYSTERIOUSLY APPEAR IN DESOLATE WARZONES, REAPPEAR IN MEDIA COVERAGE

We wish we could just invent things that make no sense and get them treated as "our side" of the story. "Omri Ceren today claimed to have the best-read blog on the planet, but other bloggers cast doubt on that claim". That would be awesome. But alas, we're not Palestinians:

An air strike was called in near the Karni crossing between Gaza and Israel after gunmen were spotted approaching Israeli forces in the area. The army said the activity was against "terror threats" in Gaza, where Hamas fighters overran security forces loyal to Western-backed Palestinian president Abbas on June 15, effectively creating an Islamic enclave on Israel's doorstep. Medics said 11 Palestinians were killed, including eight fighters in the armed Islamic Jihad, Hamas and the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades linked to Abbas's Fatah party. Three civilians were killed, including a 12-year-old boy.

Naturally, this is a lie. All the Palestinians killed in the firefight were gunmen. Now why would we believe Israel and not the Palestinians? Mostly because we're able to ask questions like "hey, how would a 12 year old end up in the no-man's land next to the Gaza fence?" Unless he was actually one of the gunmen, which isn't exactly unheard of.

It is nice to see that the international media is paying attention to Gaza civilians though. For some reason that phrase hasn't come up much in the last two weeks - apparently no civilians in Gaza were getting killed during that time, huh? Oh - and it's also nice to see that the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades still have some fight left in them. Not enough to prevent Hamas from rolling over them, killing their leaders and dragging their bodies through the streets, and destroying their schools and homes. But enough to try to kill Israelis.

SUSPICIOUSLY INCONSISTENT BRITISH BOYCOTT OF THE DAY - BRITS NOT BOYCOTTING THE SIDE THAT STRAPS SUICIDE BELTS TO BRITISH JOURNALISTS

Israeli and Jewish organizations are devoting enormous resources to countering the myriad British boycotts - from journalists and doctors and trade unions and academics - that have recently been leveled against the Jewish state. You know who doesn't have to worry about British boycotts? The Palestinians who strap suicide belts to British hostages and force them to plead for their lives in front of cameras.

It's almost like there's a double standard at work here.

Or - even more unbelievably - that British animus towards Israel is being driven by something other than level-headed analysis regarding the genuine scope of imagined Israeli human rights violations.

Safe for work and somewhat less nauseating than some of the other images that have come out of that train wreck - more "they're totally batshit crazy" than "that is a stomach turning and inhuman atrocity".

NBC BEIRUT CHIEF: AQ FIGHTERS MAKING "ALAMO-LIKE LAST STAND"

Richard Engel could have chosen any well-known last stand from any point in history as his lede for the LAF shelling of terrorists. We would suggest Custer, but there are plenty of options. Instead he choose to take one of the most emblematic symbols of American bravery:

One Palestinian refugee camp here in northern Lebanon is today a smoldering, sniper-infested, booby-trapped battlefield where a few hundred al-Qaida inspired fighters have been making an Alamo-like last stand against the Lebanese army.

We're not sure what's particularly "Alamo-like" in this last stand that the last-stand-ishness of the suicidal battle itself doesn't cover, but we'd certainly be interested in finding out. At least he didn't use Masada.

PELOSI & CO. SEEK TO LIMIT OUR FREE SPEECH

THE LEFT WANTS TO REVIVE THE "FAIRNESS" DOCTRINE; (VIA THE THONG):

Liberal Democrats are attempting to muzzle conservative talk radio: they are assaulting free speech.

Like the communists in the former Soviet Union, America’s liberals seek to crush dissent by consolidating control over the media—especially talk radio, which has emerged as the dominant medium for conservative opinion.

Allies close to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi are promoting legislation, which if passed, will take off the air prominent conservative radio hosts such as Michael Savage, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Bill O’Reilly—along with thousands of smaller conservative broadcasters.

The bill, entitled the "Media Ownership Reform Act," is sponsored by Rep. Maurice Hinchey, a leftist Democrat from New York.

The legislation aims to revive the so-called “Fairness Doctrine” of the 1940’s: “all views” are to be given equal time on radio. In particular, the Federal Communications Commission would have the power to oversee and change radio and television content.

The goal is to tilt the ideological balance of power away from the right on the nation’s air waves.

RTWT - IT'S APTLY TITLED: "Liberal totalitarianism."

WHAT PELOSI AND HER COMRADES WANT TO DO IS NO DIFFERENT THAN WHAT STALIN, CASTRO DID, MUGABE DID, AND WHAT CHAVEZ IS DOING: PREVENT THE OPPOSITION FROM AIRING THEIR VIEWS.

AIR AMERICA FAILED FOR ONE REASON: LEFTISTS HAD NO NEED FOR TALK-RADIO BECAUSE THEY ALREADY CONTROLLED TV AND MAJOR NEWSPAPERS AND MAGAZINES; AIR AMERICA WAS REDUNDANT.

NEWSWEEK: 2000 ELECTION "STOLEN" FROM DEMOCRATS BY NADER

We're inclined to believe that it was never theirs to begin with. At least that's what the American people seem to have decided. But it's always interesting to see how assumptions harden into linguistic ticks harden into conventional wisdom:

Waterston actually lives in Connecticut, but concedes his Hollywood friends are having a hard time getting their heads around the notion of a third-party candidacy. “Part of it is fear,” he says. “Ralph Nader fear.” Democrats don’t want another election stolen from them by an allegedly well-meaning idealist wanting to reform the system. Republicans are skittish, too. They like control, and the Internet by definition is an uncontrollable force.

"Republicans like control", you say? Because it was the Republicans who opened this Congress by trying to shut down political speech on the Internet. From bland pro-Democratic resentment to glib anti-Republican stereotypes, thus does opinion filter from one myopic self-styled sophisticate to another.

The latest Salon column from Camille Paglia is one of the best I've read in a long time. Her take on the Fox News/Democrats dust-up is straight-up genius:

What is this morbid obsession that liberals have with Fox?

It's as if Democrats, pampered and spoiled by so many decades of the mainstream media trumpeting the liberal agenda, are so shaky in their convictions that they cannot risk an encounter with opposing views.

Democrats have ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, the New York Times, Newsweek, Time and 98 percent of American humanities professors to do their bidding.

But no, that's not enough -- every spark of dissent has to be extinguished with buckets of bile.

TV STILL BEING DEMONIZED

Strange that no good effects of TV are mentioned below -- typical of propaganda. For just a few examples of the good effects that might have been mentioned, see here.

Anything popular [bourgeois and indigenous to the West- ed.] is hated by the [elitists of the...] Left, and there is a lot of Leftism and its accompanying low ethical standards in academe so all the adverse findings about TV must be viewed with deep skepticism. For the record, I personally almost never watch TV, although I have two of them -- very old ones.

Watching too much television as a child may trigger serious health problems such as autism and obesity, and in girls the early onset of puberty, a scientist has claimed. So great are the dangers, says Aric Sigman, that watching television should be banned for children under three years old and severely restricted as they grow older. Writing in the journal Biologist, Dr Sigman says that the average six-year-old child in Britain will have already spent a year watching television, and claims that the simple act of staring at a bright television screen, regardless of a programme's content, can damage a child's health.

Dr Sigman identified 15 negative effects that, he says, television can have on youngsters, ranging from short-sightedness and diabetes to premature puberty and autism. "We may ultimately be responsible for the greatest health scandal of our time," he writes. "Given the evidence, it would be prudent to cordon off the early years of child development as a time when screen media is excluded and then introduced judiciously as the child matures. "To allow children to continue to watch this much screen media is an abdication of parental responsibility. Truly hands-off parenting."

Dr Sigman's report, which is based on his analysis of 35 scientific studies, claims that television viewing affects levels of melatonin, a hormone linked to when puberty occurs in girls. Melatonin levels increase in the evening, at the onset of darkness, but staring into a bright screen during this period hinders its production.

Research has shown that melatonin affects puberty in females more than males. "Animal studies have shown that low melatonin levels have an important role in promoting an early onset of puberty and linked to reproductive function in several sexually mature animals," Dr Sigman says. Girls have been reaching puberty earlier since the 1950s, which previous research had blamed on an average increase in female weight, but he claims that lower melatonin levels may be another cause.

Dr Sigman, a member of the Institute of Biology and associate fellow of the British Psychological Society, says that watching television also damages sleep patterns, causes over-eating and increases the risk of type 2 diabetes. "Television may induce us to eat more [by] causing our brain to monitor external non-food cues - the television screen - as opposed to internal food cues telling us that we have stuffed ourselves and can stop eating." Low attention spans and poor educational achievement could also be linked to television viewing habits.

THE HALF HOUR NEWS HOUR DELIVERS

I encouraged people last week to tune into Joel Surnow's new conservative, comedy show, The Half Hour News Hour. I watched it last night and was not disappointed. I laughed a lot and for us conservative, political news junkies it was a breath of fresh air.

When I've talked about this on my blog there has been a lot of whining by liberals about how this show isn't really funny, blah, blah, blah... I don't know why they are threatened by conservatives having 1 comedy show out of the thousands of liberal ones but they do seem to be scared. Another encouragement that Surnow must be doing something right.
