... with the recent findings of the Tamar and Leviathan natural gas reserves off its waters, Israel has a future as an energy independent country. By why stop there? Some believe that Israel could become one of the world’s leading oil producers.

Such is the plan of Harold Vinegar and his colleagues. Dr. Vinegar, the former chief scientist of Royal Dutch Shell, and current chief scientist at Israel Energy Initiatives (IEI), believes that with Israel’s oil shale deposits, this could be reality.

IEI is working on an ambitious project to extract oil and natural gas from oil shale from a 238 sq km area off the Shfela Basin, southwest of Jerusalem.

... According to Dr. Vinegar, Israel has the second-biggest oil shale deposits in the world, outside the United States. “We estimate that there are the equivalent of 250 billion barrels of oil there. To put that in context, there are proven reserves of 260 billion barrels of oil in Saudi Arabia.” he told The Times.

Once operational, IEI estimates that the cost of production of shale oil would be between $34-40 per barrel. This would make it comparable to the current price of $30-40 per barrel for deepwater oilfield and cheaper than Canadian sand oil and crude oil extracted from the Arctic.

HAMAS TERRORIST CELL CAPTURED IN JERUSALEM

Here's a newly discovered example of how they're in the midst of Jerusalem's vicinity:

The Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) has captured a Hamas terror cell that was operating in east Jerusalem and planning attacks against Israeli targets. One of the cell members was behind a bomb that seriously injured a Jerusalem Municipality worker in March.

The cell consisted of five residents of the east Jerusalem neighborhood of Sur Baher who were arrested in February. The details were released on Thursday.

The cell began planning its attacks on the sidelines of Operation Cast Lead in 2009. Three of the members - Munir Atun, Ahmed Nimar and Ahmed Dawit - met in a restaurant in Sur Baher and discussed their frustration with the operation and their readiness to engage in anti-Israel terrorist activity.

The Shin Bet said that the three were known Hamas operatives and had familial links to Hamas. Nimar, 25, was in an Israeli prison between 2006-2007 and his brother began serving a sentence in 2010 for his involvement in Hamas activity and work he did on behalf of the Hamas command in Syria.

The three assembled an improvised explosive device with a gas balloon and hi[d] it. Later, Monir and Dawit drove to Bethlehem where they purchased a pistol for $5,000. During 2009 and 2010 the three met often in a coffee shop in Sur Baher owned by Dawit and discussed plans to attack a Jerusalem mall with a car bomb.

In the beginning of 2010, Jihad Atun, another Hamas operative from Sur Baher, contacted a Hamas operative in the Gaza Strip and asked to receive money that was intended for Hamas prisoners. Some $15,000 was sent to Atun from Jordan with the help of several money changers.

Atun's brother is serving a prison sentence for his involvement in the murder of three Israelis, including Border Policeman Nissim Toledano, in 1992. Following the murder, 415 Palestinian terror suspects, mostly from Hamas, were deported to Lebanon. Another brother was a Hamas legislator elected to the Palestinian parliament in 2006.

The Gaza-based Hamas operative later instructed Atun to purchase a new phone and informed him that contact would be made via encrypted email messages. He later sent Atun a code he could use to decipher the messages.

In February, the Gaza-based operative sent Atun a message and asked him to carry out an attack like the shooting attack at the Merkaz Harav Yeshiva in Jerusalem in 2008, in which eight students were killed. The operative transferred 10,000 Jordanian Dinars to Atun and promised to transfer 20,000 more in the near future. The cell planned to purchase an M-16 assault rifle and two pistols. At this stage, Atun was arrested by the Shin Bet.

This led the Shin Bet to Mahmoud Diwat, brother of Ahmed Diwat, the owner of the coffee shop. Mahmoud confessed to planting a bomb in a bush on Rehov Derech Hebron in Jerusalem which was found by a Jerusalem Municipality worker who lost part of his hand in the explosion.

Mahmoud said he had planned to plant the bomb at a hitchhiker post in Gilo used by residents of the Gush Etzion settlement bloc.

The five were indicted in Jerusalem District Court on Thursday.

It's good to see that the authorities took responsibility and tracked down the terrorists. But this is exactly why they're going to need to maintain more of a presence in the eastern neighborhoods if they're to keep terror cells from gaining a foothold here.

During a raid on Awarta to find the murderers of the Fogel family, 100 women were arrested by the IDF. That's interesting, as it's the first time the IDF has really done this, and the intention, I'm guessing, is to interrogate them as to what they enabled by sitting around doing nothing to prevent it.

Most important to note here, however:

A just-released survey shows that a full third of Palestinian Authority residents have expressed support for the brutal massacre of the Fogel family. The poll was jointly conducted by the Harry S. Truman Research Institute for the Advancement of Peace at the Hebrew University and the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research in Ramallah.

But with food prices rising sharply in recent months, many experts are calling on countries to scale back their headlong rush into green fuel development, arguing that the combination of ambitious biofuel targets and mediocre harvests of some crucial crops is contributing to high prices, hunger and political instability.

This year, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization reported that its index of food prices was the highest in its more than 20 years of existence. Prices rose 15 percent from October to January alone, potentially “throwing an additional 44 million people in low- and middle-income countries into poverty,” the World Bank said.

Soaring food prices have caused riots or contributed to political turmoil in a host of poor countries in recent months, including Algeria, Egypt and Bangladesh, where palm oil, a common biofuel ingredient, provides crucial nutrition to a desperately poor populace. During the second half of 2010, the price of corn rose steeply — 73 percent in the United States — an increase that the United Nations World Food Program attributed in part to the greater use of American corn for bioethanol.

HEADSCARVES FOR FEMALE SOLDIERS SHOULDN'T EVEN BE AN OPTION

The Daily Caller reported that the Pentagon replied to the query about whether US female soldiers in Afghanistan were being "encouraged" to wear burkas. Their response was unsatisfying:

The Pentagon responded to Rhode Island Democratic Rep. Jim Langevin’s concerns about female soldiers being encouraged to wear the hijab while serving in Afghanistan Thursday evening.

The letter, penned by U.S. Navy Admiral Michael Mullen, said the military is not directing or requiring female soldiers to wear the headscarf, but instead giving them option of wearing one with their uniform if they deem it appropriate.

“The general consensus among female Service members working with the local population in Afghanistan is that they should have the flexibility to wear a head scarf if they, along with their command, determine the mission or their safety are enhanced by it, as long as it is a personal choice,” Mullen wrote, adding that in some Afghan regions female soldiers have been prohibited from wearing headscarves.

Col. Martha McSally, whose frustration about being made to wear the Muslim abaya while stationed in Saudi Arabia during the 1990s resulted in legislation banning the practice of forcing soldiers to wear Muslim garb in that country, told TheDC that, whether women are being forced or allowed, wearing the hijab sends a bad message.

“The whole point I have been trying to make is that this is a strategic and not tactical issue. And the Commanders at General Petraeus’s level or above should have never AUTHORIZED it as an option, due to the wrong message it sends,” McSally wrote in an email. “I understand that you may not get immediate access to a village if the women don’t wear hijabs, but we shouldn’t be so desperate to do ‘whatever it takes’ to win over rural Afghan men and women that we are willing to compromise who we are.”

Mullen added that some women feel the headscarf helps them to better perform their jobs.

“They feel this gesture helps them in accomplishing their mission by serving as a sign of courtesy and respect to the locals,” Mullen wrote.

The ambiguity of the policy leaves McSally scratching her head. In an occupation where rules are king, McSally told TheDC the lack of precision is concerning.

“If we have even abandoned these practices about the importance of the wear of the uniform and command level policies and instead take a ‘wear whatever you choose in your view of what helps your tactical mission,’ that is inappropriate as well,” McSally wrote.

Mullen's response is limp, as is the standing of any female soldier who goes through with this appeasement gesture. It most definitely should not have even been authorized as an option, and if Petraeus has any responsibility here, there's one more reason why I don't think he'll be a darling for the right anymore.

BRITAIN WON'T SUPPORT RETRACTION OF GOLDSTONE'S BLOOD LIBELS

As if further proof was needed that Britain is a hopeless case, the UK foreign office has said it won't seek any retractions:

LONDON – The British government said on Monday that it does not support calls for a retraction of the Goldstone Report after its lead author distanced himself from the report’s main allegations. [...]

“Justice Goldstone has not made such a call [to retract the report], and he has not elaborated on his views surrounding the various other allegations contained in the report, allegations which we firmly believe require serious follow- up by the parties to the conflict,” a Foreign Office spokesman told The Jerusalem Post on Monday night.

The British government said that while Goldstone’s acknowledgment was important, his was not the only report on the 22-day conflict.

Oh, so that's their excuse. Most of those are equally BS, the difference being that Goldstone's propaganda is what got the most major attention.

Joshuapundit's got a very good post stressing just how needless Britain is already, and how hostile the environment is towards Jews and free trade. A most recent example is Ahava cosmetics being forced to move away from Covent Garden because of nasty demonstrations from the usual suspects (H/T: Israel Matzav). I would suggest in reaction to Britain's constant unwillingness to do anything to improve their environment to not buy any products they have left. It could include Rolls-Royce and Aston Martin, for example.

And on top of all that, the really telling news, as the above signaled, is that Goldstone won't even seek an authentic nullification of his own abomination:

South African jurist Richard Goldstone said Tuesday that he did not plan to seek nullification of his highly critical U.N. report on Israel's 2008-2009 offensive in the Gaza Strip and asserted that claims to the contrary by Israeli Interior Minister Eli Yishai were false. [...]

In an interview with The Associated Press, Goldstone said that Yishai had called him on Monday to thank him for an op-ed piece published Friday in The Washington Post in which the judge wrote that new information had come to light that made him rethink his central conclusions.

Goldstone said, however, that he never discussed the report with Yishai in the telephone conversation. Israeli leaders have called for the report to be retracted since it was issued in 2009.

So just as some keener writers have stressed, Goldstone is not serious about his regrets, and the damage is done regardless. We can add one more voice agreeing that Goldstone's supposed regrets fall flat:

A South African Jewish leader wrote in The Johannesburg Times that Goldstone’s "mea culpa” was not an expression of being pro-Israel. On the contrary, Victor Gordon, Chairman of the Pretoria Council of the South African Jewish Board of Deputies, asserted that Goldstone is “trying to shift the blame onto Israel for not cooperating” with his probe.

Why should we when his crap was one-sided to begin with? A most disgusting thing is that he may visit Israel soon, but doesn't deserve to, and should receive a most cold reception if he comes here, because there's every possibility that he'll come and go pretending to be sorry. If he really is, he'd at least have the audacity to research the Koran and acknowledge some of the most revolting themes and verses inside. But I doubt he ever will.

Repsol YPF (REP.MC: Quote) expects to have a Chinese-built drilling rig in Cuban waters by the end of the summer and start drilling immediately into a prospective undersea oil field that looks like it could be a big one, a geologist for the Spanish oil company said on Monday.

Repsol, in a consortium with Norway's Statoil (STL.OL: Quote) and a unit of India's Oil and Natural Gas Corp. (ONGC.BO: Quote), plans to drill one well with the high-tech Scarabeo 9 rig and another if the first is successful, said senior structural geologist Gonzalo Zamora at Cuba's Earth Sciences Summit in Havana.

"The perspectives are to find something, if not, we wouldn't be drilling. And the sizes are big," he told reporters after making a presentation at the conference that is heavily focused on Cuba's oil and gas development.

• WE CAN REDISTRIBUTE WEALTH AND ELIMINATE POVERTY.

Redistributionist policies have never ever worked at anytime in any place. Socialism and the welfare state actually perpetuate poverty and dependence and decrease economic growth and diminish prosperity. Wrong again: Medicare and Medicaid run a 60 billion dollar deficit every year and much of that is fraud; this would never be possible if they were well run, but it is perpetuated because the taxpayer picks up the bill and not the "administrators" of the plan. Medicare and Medicaid are unsustainable. Liberals and leftist constantly harp and harangue about "sustainable" economies; they should start by making Medicare and Medicaid sustainable - (and if they can't they should allow for the ORDERLY transition to privatization over the next few decades).

The Blaze has an AP story about the new law to ban Islamic veils. As you can probably expect, the AP does signal their negative attitude about it. But there is what to take note of:

The increasing focus on France’s Muslims – who number at least 5 million, the largest such population in western Europe – comes with presidential elections a year away and support for a far-right party growing. A recent palpable rise in tensions has also been boosted by fears of a mass migration of Muslims due to disarray in the Arab world.

Interior Minister Claude Gueant put it bluntly Monday.

“This growth in the number of (Muslims) and a certain number of behaviors cause problems,” he said in remarks carried on French radio. “There is no reason why the nation should accord to one particular religion more rights than religions that were formerly anchored in our country.”

France’s challenge is evident in the Paris suburb of Trappes. It has a large Muslim population and is one of the few towns in France where veiled women are occasionally seen on the streets.

At the town hall, the subject of the impending crackdown is taboo. Some predict police will turn a blind eye to any veils to keep things tranquil.

We better hope that's not the case, but you can be sure the AP very much wants negligence to take place.

The topic of Tuesday‘s roundtable by Sarkozy’s conservative UMP party is officially secularism, a foundational value of France. However, the talks are expected to take up distinctly Muslim social issues like halal food in school cafeterias or demands by some for separate hours for women at public swimming pools.

Its backers say debate is needed to address evolutions in French society – such as a growing demand for mosque building and Islamic butchers – since the country’s 1905 law formally separated the state from the Catholic Church.

Sarkozy did something positive as a step with one of his staffers:

Sarkozy fired his adviser on integration, Abderrahmane Dahmane, last month for castigating party leader Jean-Francois Cope, who is organizing the talks.

“Cope’s UMP is the plague of Muslims,” Dahmane said in an interview.

Dahmane is a controversial figure who has called on French Muslims to wear a green star Tuesday, similar to the yellow star that Jews were forced to wear under Nazi occupation. Prominent Jewish figures in France have bristled at the comparison.

Another longstanding UMP member tore up his party card in a rage at the Paris mosque. Abdallah Zekri, a member of the High Council of Mosques of France from the southwestern city of Nimes, says Arabs are being targeted.

“Muslims will always be scapegoats,” he said at a Paris news conference. “We no longer talk about immigrants. We talk about Muslims.”

These are precisely whom Sarkozy and the UMP must distance themselves from, if they're to boost their reputation and regain any votes they've lost.

The measure banning the veil forbids women to hide their faces in public places, even in the streets. It punishes those who defy the law with a fine of euro150 or a citizenship course of both. Anyone discovered forcing a woman to cover her face risks a year in prison and a euro30,000 fine – doubled if the veiled person is a minor.

Oh yes, this is a very important part in all the issue, and must definitely be followed through on.

I think another subject they might want to bring up is canceling any laws that forbid criticism of religion, and take up a law similar to the 1st Amendment's Religion Clause. And, they might also want to consider taking a firmer stance on immigration from Islamic countries, another subject that plenty of people there would surely want brought up.

PETER KING GOT A BLOOD-STAINED MESSAGE IN MAIL

CBS reports that Rep. Peter King got a shocking package with a bloody pig's foot and anti-semitic screed (Hat tip: The Blaze):

Authorities intercepted a parcel this morning addressed to Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.) containing a bloody pig’s foot and a derogatory message, a source has confirmed to CBS News.

The parcel was intercepted at the Congressional mail facility in Landover, Maryland, where mail sent to lawmakers is screened for security risks.

The U.S. Capitol Police and U.S. Postal Service confirmed that there is an open investigation, though would not confirm the details of what was contained in the parcel because the investigation is ongoing. King’s office, which did not see the parcel, referred all questions to the Capitol Police.

According to the Postal Service, a hazardous materials response team tested the parcel and found it to be non-hazardous.

The letter contained anti-semitism too, and attacked the hearings he conducted on Islamic terrorism:

A Capitol Hill source tells NBC that the Washington D.C. office of Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.) was sent a bloody pig’s foot with a note attached that contained anti-Semitic ramblings.

The note referenced King’s controversial hearing last month about Muslim extremism within the United States.

It should be noted that King is not Jewish and his default religion is Catholicism.

Now what can we learn from this? At least 3 things: a]the culprit could have been a most deranged leftist, or b]an Islamofascist who had no problem associating him/herself with pork if it suited their deranged goals, and c]that no matter how badly King caved to political correctness by not inviting Steve Emerson, Ayaan Hirsi Ali and Robert Spencer, it will not satisfy such demonic creatures; they will still despise him till the end of time.

We must hope the horrifying package is traced, but can't be surprised if the culprits have made an effort to cover their tracks.

Ehud Barak is going to give his approval to expanding the building zoning in at least 4 Judean villages:

Defense Minister Ehud Barak plans to approve urban zoning in a number of West Bank settlements, the Defense Ministry confirmed on Monday.

Barak will reportedly allow for four settlements - Rotem, Hemdat, Eshkolot and Nofim - to be zoned as urban areas. The settlements will join Kiryat Netafim and Halamish (Neve Tzuf), whose urban master plans the Defense Ministry already approved.

All of the aforementioned settlements were established with government approval. Twelve such settlements, including Itamar, where the Fogel family was brutally murdered weeks ago, do not have approved urban master plans.

The changed zoning allows for higher density of building in the settlements, making them more likely to be allowed to continue construction. However, no building permits have been handed out for the four settlements.

Following Israeli media reports that Barak approved widespread construction in the West Bank, the Defense Ministry said that "these are legal settlements that were built on state lands, received authorizations from the government, but their urban construction schemes were not arranged. Only recently were those arrangements completed."

"This is the approval of the existing situation," the Defense Ministry's statement explained. "Any additional construction requires another authorization."

Last week, 45 Knesset members signed a letter released on Sunday, requesting Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Barak to authorize the urban building scheme in the settlement of Itamar, where five members of the Fogel family were stabbed to death earlier this month.

MKs from the Likud, Kadima, Israel Beiteinu, National Union, United Torah Judaism, Habayit Heyehudi and Shas signed the letter, including Deputy Ministers Danny Ayalon, Gila Gamliel, Menahem Eliezer Moses, Leah Ness and Ayoub Kara.

And in similar news, 942 housing units were approved for Jerusalem's Gilo district.

The Muslim Brotherhood is advocating "modesty police":

Officials of the Muslim Brotherhood, Egypt's leading Islamic group, have called for the establishment of a Saudi-style modesty police to combat "immoral" behavior in public areas in what observers say in another sign of a growing Islamic self-confidence in the post-Mubarak era.

In the political sphere, the Brotherhood led a successful drive to get voters to approve a package of constitutional amendments. On the street level, at least 20 attacks were perpetrated against the tombs of Muslim mystics (suffis), who are the subject of popular veneration but disparaged by Islamic fundamentalists, or salafis. After some initial hesitation, Islamic leaders have publicly praised the revolution.

"This is incredibly worrying to many Egyptians," Maye Kassem, a political scientist at the American University in Cairo (AUC), told The Media Line. "The salafis were always undercover in Egypt and now they are emerging as a political force. They are getting too vocal."

Newly freed from the political strictures of the Mubarak era, Egypt has turned into a battleground between those who envision a liberal, secular state and those who advocate various shades if Islam. The conflict mirrors those taking place elsewhere in the region. In Bahrain, unrest has evolved into a conflict between Sunni- and Shiite Muslims and the US has pulled back from supporting Libyan rebels over concerns they are dominated by Islamists.

Well thank goodness for that - even in Libya, Islamists supporting severe sharia law are a problem, and if those "rebels" are Islamic, they don't need support from the west.

Issam Durbala, a member of the Brotherhood's Shura council, told the Egyptian daily Al-Masri Al-Youm on Sunday, that he supported the establishment of a virtue police, or Hisbah, which had existed in medieval Islamic societies to oversee public virtue and modesty, mostly in the marketplace and other public gathering spaces.

But he seemed to stop short of advocating a force along then lines of that which operates in Saudi Arabia today under the auspices of the Committee for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice. It enforces a dress code, separation of sexes and the observances of prayer times.

"The new police must have a department with limited authorities to arrest those who commit immoral acts,” Durbala told the newspaper.

That doesn't sound so limited to me. In fact, it sounds quite dreadful. He's only talking out of both sides of his mouth, most ambiguously. And this is exactly why all concerns Egypt will sink into the darkness of sharia are fully valid. Sadly, if a majority of Gazan Muslims could support Hamas, there's every chance the same will emerge in Egypt, and they could even rig the elections to ensure the Muslim Brotherhood will reign victorious. Then, we could witness the forcing of the chador/abaya/niqab upon the land once inhabited by the ancient Egyptians.

Jonathan Tobin writes on Commentary about Richard Goldstone's belated admittal that Israel acted accordingly, whereas the Hamas did not. And that:

...the follow-up to Goldstone’s statement must not be limited to either its now somewhat penitent author or the vicious UN agency that promoted his flawed document. The Goldstone report was a pivotal moment in the growing effort to delegitimize Israel. What we must now hear are similar apologies from all those groups and individuals, from Human Rights Watch to J Street to mainstream bloggers like Andrew Sullivan and minor Palestinian mouthpieces like Hussein Ibish, that either defended Goldstone’s false allegations or sought to aid efforts to promote his scandalous charges. There must be an accounting from all of Goldstone’s previous champions. Like Goldstone’s report, their credibility on this issue is finished.

Unfortunately, that doesn't mean they'll admit it in turn. Creatures like those do not see themselves bearing responsibility. And the damage is tragically done. The Islamic world won't care one bit if Goldstone's recanted. And as John Podhoretz says:

There is no chance Goldstone was not aware in the past how Hamas is a terrorist gang, existing for more than 2 decades now, and if he's still holding negative sentiments against Israel, that's another serious minus. As I said before, Goldstone is a figure to be ostracized by sane society, along with countless other monstrosities littering up the UN.

What to do with the NIF is shun them, pure and simple. They're traitors, and they must take responsibility. Yet Goldstone himself cannot be exonerated or overlooked here; he too is equally guilty, and could tell very easily just what he was dealing with.

And what of Hamas and Fatah?

Hamas says death threats from the “Zionist lobby” forced Judge Richard Goldstone to write a “reconsideration’ of his 2009 U.N. Human Rights Council report against Israel; a friend of Goldstone says, “Jewish reaction influenced him."

“The Zionist lobby’s death threats” and Israel-American pressure forced Goldstone to recant, Hamas stated Sunday. There is not evidence of either nor did Goldstone hint at the possibility in his article.

The rival Fatah movement, headed by Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas, also condemned Goldstone's reversal, singling out Hamas for not investigating war crimes while vindicating Israel for alleged intentional attacks on civilians during the Operation Cast Lead counterterrorist campaign two years ago.

So we see here that they have no regrets themselves either, and are only spiteful and hateful of Goldstone for running out on them.

Why I support a 2011 budget compromise: THE HOOVER DAM

If you try to dam up a big fast stream at a particular spot by dumping a lot of big stones in the middle of the stream where the current is strongest, then you will fail because the current will just push the stones downstream until the land harmlessly on some bank way downstream.

To actually have a positive effect you need to dump fewer stones from the edge and gradually build it up.

The same is true of damming up a big river: you can't just dump a barrier in the middle of the flow: To build the Hoover Dam, the Colorado River had to be diverted first:

Before the dam could be built, the Colorado River needed to be diverted away from the construction site. To accomplish this, four diversion tunnels were driven through the canyon walls, two on the Nevada side and two on the Arizona side. These tunnels were 56 feet (17 m) in diameter.^[45] Their combined length was nearly 16,000 ft or more than 3 mi (5 km).^[46] The contract required these tunnels to be completed by October 1, 1933, with a $3,000 per day fine to be assessed for any delay. To meet the deadline, Six Companies had to complete work by early 1933, since only in late fall and winter was the water level in the river low enough to safely divert.^[47]

Tunneling began at the lower portals of the Nevada tunnels in May 1931. Shortly afterward, work began on two similar tunnels in the Arizona canyon wall. In March 1932, work began on lining the tunnels with concrete. First the base, or invert, was poured. Gantry cranes, running on rails through the entire length of each tunnel were used to place the concrete. The sidewalls were poured next. Movable sections of steel forms were used for the sidewalls. Finally, using pneumatic guns, the overheads were filled in. The concrete lining is 3 ft (1 m) thick, reducing the finished tunnel diameter to 50 ft (15 m).^[46] The river was diverted into the two Arizona tunnels (the Nevada tunnels were kept in reserve for high water) on November 13, 1932.

This was done by exploding a temporary cofferdam protecting the Arizona tunnels while at the same time dumping rubble into the river until its natural course was blocked.^[48]

Following the completion of the dam, the entrances to the two outer diversion tunnels were sealed at the opening and half way through the tunnels with large concrete plugs. The downstream halves of the tunnels following the inner plugs are now the main bodies of the spillway tunnels.^[46]

The same is true of damming up the federal budget. We can't balance it all at once. We need to divert it and gradually cut off the flow before building the dam.

We need to do it step by step.

So I won't condemn the GOP leadership in the House if they make a compromise on the 2011 federal budget.

"That's a terrible thing to say," she said, as Whoopi exclaimed, "oh my God...that's the biggest pile of dog mess I've heard in ages." She continued, "it's not 'cause he's black, is it?" Trump said it had "nothing to do with that."

"Because I've never heard any white President asked to be shown the birth certificate," Whoopi said heatedly, pounding her fist into her hand. "When you become the President of the United States of America, you know that he's American. I'm sorry. That's B.S."

I'm not going to revisit the merits of the issue, but I will note the continuing tendency to treat any questions as to the issue of Obama's eligibility as inherently a reflection of racism.

This time from Leonard Pitts, Jr., writing in the Detroit Free Press (emphasis mine):

It is telling that the white candidate who was, in fact, not born in the U.S.A. (Sen. John McCain was born in the Panama Canal Zone) did not face these questions, while the black one who was born in Hawaii has been unable to escape them....

Frankly, I wish Trump and his fellow birthers would just go ahead and call Obama an N-word. Yes, it would be reprehensible and offensive.

But it would be a damn sight more honest, too."

Actually, John McCain was challenged on the issue of whether he was a natural born citizen. It's even on the internet, so it should not have been very difficult for Mr. Pitts to find.

And such questions didn't start in 2008, McCain was challenged on the issue in the run-up to the 2000 primaries, as reported in the early days of the internet by a columinst for The Washington Post:

NYTIMES: On Eve of Redefining Malcolm X, Biographer Dies

For two decades, the Columbia University professor Manning Marable focused on the task he considered his life’s work: redefining the legacy of Malcolm X. Last fall he completed “Malcolm X: A Life of Reinvention,” a 594-page biography described by the few scholars who have seen it as full of new and startling information and insights.

The book is scheduled to be published on Monday, and Mr. Marable had been looking forward to leading a vigorous public discussion of his ideas. But on Friday Mr. Marable, 60, died in a hospital in New York as a result of medical problems he thought he had overcome. Officials at Viking, which is publishing the book, said he was able to look at it before he died. But as his health wavered, they were scrambling to delay interviews, including an appearance on the “Today” show in which his findings would have finally been aired.

The book challenges both popular and scholarly portrayals of Malcolm X, the black nationalist leader, describing a man often subject to doubts about theology, politics and other matters, quite different from the figure of unswerving moral certitude that became an enduring symbol of African-American pride.

It is particularly critical of the celebrated “Autobiography of Malcolm X,” now a staple of college reading lists, which was written with Alex Haley and which Mr. Marable described as “fictive.” Drawing on diaries, private correspondence and surveillance records to a much greater extent than previous biographies, his book also suggests that the New York City Police Department and the F.B.I. had advance knowledge of Malcolm X’s assassination but allowed it to happen and then deliberately bungled the investigation.

A leading US Marxist claims that president elect Barack Obama has read some of his books and "understands what socialism is."


Columbia University professor of African American Studies, Manning Marable, writing in the December Issue of British Trotskyist journal Socialist Review, also alleges that Obama works with socialists "with backgrounds in the Communist Party"

According to Dr Marable;

Obama represents a generation of what might be called post-racial black politicians-by which I mean they espouse a politics that minimises matters of race. They do not like to talk about race and subsume it under the rubric of poverty and class. So they are generally left of centre, or liberal, on social and economic policy. Obama is a progressive liberal.

What makes Obama different is that he has also been a community organiser. He has read left literature, including my works, and he understands what socialism is. A lot of the people working with him are, indeed, socialists with backgrounds in the Communist Party or as independent Marxists. There are a lot of people like that in Chicago who have worked with him for years...

Manning Marable is certainly in a position to know about Obama's views and reading habits. Whether Dr Marable and Barack Obama have ever met I'm usure, but they have been "close" for many years.

Since the 1980s Dr Marable has been a regular speaker at DSA's annual Socialist Scholars Conference, usually at held Cooper Union in New York. In the early 80s, Obama "went to socialist conferences at Cooper Union and African cultural fairs in Brooklyn".

Perhaps Dr Marable inspired Obama then, just as Obama inspires Dr Marable today?

FACEBOOK FACING LAWSUIT OVER INTIFADA INCITEMENT PAGE

Even if they've taken down any followups to the jihadist pages that were still there till now, this lawsuit filed against them is exactly what they deserve:

WASHINGTON — Facebook and co-founder Mark Zuckerberg have been hit with a lawsuit seeking more than $1 billion in damages over a page on the social network which called for a "Third Intifada" against Israel.

Facebook this week shut down the "Third Intifada" page, which had almost 500,000 fans, but the lawsuit filed in a court here claims that the social network showed "negligence" by not quickly responding to appeals to remove the page.

Besides awarding damages, the complaint calls on the court to bar Facebook "from allowing the Facebook page titled 'Third Palestinian Intifada,' and other related and similar sites, which advocate violence and death to Jews."

The suit, a copy of which was obtained by technology blog TechCrunch, was filed in DC Superior Court by Larry Klayman, who describes himself in the complaint as "an American citizen of Jewish origin" who is "active in matters concerning the security of Israel and all people."

Klayman also identifies himself as the founder of Freedom Watch, whose website describes it as a political advocacy group dedicated to protecting privacy, free speech and other rights and "our national sovereignty against the incompetent, terrorist state-controlled United Nations."

A billion bucks. I hope they do have to pay in the end. But even if they don't, I figure they'll really be damaged financially. If they were really serious, they would have taken down that page immediately, unlike their erasing the videos about the horrific murder in Itamar just a short time after they were posted. Facebook deserves whatever they get.

GOLDSTONE ADMITS TO GRAVE MISTAKES. OR SO IT SEEMS

The South African pro-apartheid judge who conducted a biased report against Israel is now belatedly admitting he made mistakes, but not that he lied and conducted a deliberately biased, alleged investigation:

The head of a U.N.-appointed expert panel that investigated the Gaza war between Israel and Hamas in the winter of 2008-2009 said in a newspaper article that new accounts by Israel's military indicate that it did not deliberately target civilians, his report's central and most inflammatory accusation.

Israel's prime minister said the military was vindicated by Richard Goldstone's acknowledgment in an op-ed piece published Friday by The Washington Post that his conclusion appeared to have been wrong. The Goldstone Report's findings, released in September 2009, triggered outrage in Israel, which refused to cooperate with the investigation on the grounds that the panel he led was biased.

"We know a lot more today about what happened in the Gaza war," Goldstone wrote. "If I had known then what I know now, the Goldstone Report would have been a different document."

But he did know, he's just not willing to admit he's a bigoted, pro-jihad lunatic.

In Friday's article, the South African judge wrote that a follow-up report by a separate U.N. committee of independent experts found that Israel has carried out investigations into more than 400 allegations of misconduct in Gaza.

Those investigations, he said, indicate that "civilians were not intentionally targeted as a matter of policy," though they backed the validity of some cases involving individual soldiers. Hamas, by contrast, has not carried out any investigations, according to the follow-up committee.

In the article, Goldstone regretted the loss of civilian life in Gaza, even if it was not intentional. He also said "it goes without saying" that Hamas commits war crimes by aiming rockets at civilians and continues to do so.

Is this supposed to mean he's having a change of heart and regretting his older ways? I wouldn't bet on it. He could go right back to his old habits at the drop of a hat.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the Goldstone Report should be formally nullified.

"Everything we said has been proven to be true," Netanyahu said. "Israel does not purposely target civilians and its investigative institutions are competent, while Hamas intentionally fires at innocent civilians and doesn't investigate anything."

"The fact that Goldstone has backtracked means the report should be buried once and for all."

You can say that again. But why do I get the feeling they won't do it? They're practically run by Islamic entities now, who could decide otherwise. Goldstone has done severe damage that'll take centuries to repair. He should be shunned and ostracized by sane society for the vicious blood libels he's committed.

FIRST GOP CONGRESSMAN CALLS FOR POLLARD CLEMENCY

The first Republican Congressman to ask this is Michael Grimm:

Congressman Michael Grimm from New York has become the first Republican in the House of Representatives to express support for Jonathan Pollard and call upon President Obama to grant him clemency.

Grimm, a first-term legislator representing Staten Island, joins a growing list of American politicians and other public figures calling for Pollard’s release.

In a YouTube video posted this week, Grimm relates that he visited Pollard in prison about two weeks ago, and that “26 years of his life are gone, and he won’t get them back.”

“As a former FBI agent,” Grimm continues, “and someone who has fought for justice most of my life, we have to acknowledge that the penalty does not necessarily meet the crime; most would say that it was excessive.” He said that many public figures "close to the investigation" have gone on record that Pollard has served his time and should be released. “I am working with many people in Washington to have justice prevail [and] to have him released. There is no question that what he did was wrong, but he has paid his debt to the United States…, and at this point, we are looking to the president to do the right thing and grant him the opportunity to resume his life and return to Israel.”

There's a list of more people who've joined the call for Pollard's release at the link. Among them, surprisingly enough, is Henry Kissinger. I assume he wants to try and make amends years after the damage he caused?

Unfortunately, the list does not include Donald Rumsfeld, who's taking a negative stance on the whole issue. Well in all due honesty, I can't say I've ever thought much of him.
