Assailants attacked three Malaysian churches with firebombs Friday, extensively damaging one amid a growing conflict over the use of the word ''Allah'' by non-Muslims, officials said.

The attacks sharply escalated tensions in the Muslim-majority country ahead of planned protests by Muslims later Friday against a Kuala Lumpur High Court verdict which struck down a 3-year-old ban on non-Muslims using ''Allah'' in their literature.

The Dec. 31 court decision incensed many Muslims, who see it as a threat to their religion. Hateful comments and threats against Christians have been posted widely on the Internet, but this is the first time the controversy has turned destructive.

The ruling was on a petition by Malaysia's Roman Catholic Church, whose main publication, the Herald, uses the word Allah in its Malay-language edition.

The mediators gathered in a conference room, and called in Minnawi and Abdul Wahid, one after the other, Zoellick and Obasanjo working them over. Frazer later came to believe that someone — maybe the Eritreans or the Libyans, both of whom had been backing the rebels — had gotten to Abdul Wahid. "He felt like his life was being threatened," she says. "He was begging for understanding, and we were twisting his arm."

Minnawi had begun the day conflicted about the deal

but throughout the session he seemed to be wearing down. He looked uncomfortable in his suit, and to the assembled diplomats he seemed much smaller than the occasion, intimidated by the power in the room. "If you don't sign," Zoellick (UN guy) told Minnawi, "we'll drop you. We'll drop you like a rock."

All night, the diplomats pressed Minnawi, pushing him to name any concessions he wanted. Eventually, near dawn, the rebel leader asked Obasanjo for time to consult his commanders in the field.

"When are you going to be back?" Obasanjo demanded.

"Soon," Minnawi said.

"What do you mean by 'soon'?" the Nigerian asked. "Christ said he would be back soon, and that was 2,000 years ago."

"Soon," Minnawi promised.

As the diplomats recessed, word began to spread that Minnawi's brother had been killed in a janjaweed raid.

Neda Soltan's death was faked, says documentary on Iran state TV

THE young woman killed during the June election protests in Tehran was an agent for the United States and Britain who faked her own death, says a documentary made by Iran state television.

Neda Agha Soltan, 27, became a symbol of Iranian democratic resistance when her death was filmed on a mobile phone and then posted on YouTube, where it was watched by millions of people.

It was then broadcast around the world by news organisations.

Yet a documentary shown on Iranian state TV claims she wasn’t dying, but had simply poured blood on her face from a hidden bottle, reports Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, a group of journalists who cover 20 countries where a free press is banned or not established.

The documentary later claims the “deceived and deceitful” Neda was shot dead on the way to hospital and that she was the victim of a plot by foreigners and Opposition supporters, including the doctor, Arash Hejazi, who treated her in the street.

"While Neda is (pretending) she is injured and is lying on the back seat of the car on their lap, they bring out a handgun from their pockets," the documentary's narrator says.

"A handgun that they obtained from their Western and Iranian friends to water the tree of reforms and kill people and create divisions within society.

A breakthrough in the research of the Hebrew scriptures has shed new light on the period in which the Bible was written. Prof. Gershon Galil of the Department of Biblical Studies at the University of Haifa has deciphered an inscription dating from the 10th century BCE (the period of King David's reign), and has shown that this is a Hebrew inscription. The discovery makes this the earliest known Hebrew writing. The significance of this breakthrough relates to the fact that at least some of the biblical scriptures were composed hundreds of years before the dates presented today in research and that the Kingdom of Israel already existed at that time.

The inscription itself, which was written in ink on a 15 cm X 16.5 cm trapezoid pottery shard, was discovered a year and a half ago at excavations that were carried out by Prof. Yosef Garfinkel at Khirbet Qeiyafa near the Elah valley.

... Prof. Galil also notes that the inscription was discovered in a provincial town in Judea. He explains that if there were scribes in the periphery, it can be assumed that those inhabiting the central region and Jerusalem were even more proficient writers.

"It can now be maintained that it was highly reasonable that during the 10th century BCE, during the reign of King David, there were scribes in Israel who were able to write literary texts and complex historiographies such as the books of Judges and Samuel."

He adds that the complexity of the text discovered in Khirbet Qeiyafa, along with the impressive fortifications revealed at the site, refute the claims denying the existence of the Kingdom of Israel at that time.

An airline passenger in Miami proclaimed "I want to kill all the Jews" before police forced him off a Detroit-bound plane, authorities said Thursday.

Mansor Mohammad Asad, 43, of Ohio, was arrested Wednesday night, according to a police department statement. Asad was charged with threats against a public servant, disorderly conduct and resisting an officer without violence.

FBI spokeswoman Judy Orihuela said there were no indications the disturbance was related to terrorism. The bureau was initially brought in to look into the incident but is no longer involved in the investigation. She said the FBI is treating the disruption as a matter for local authorities.

The disturbance forced a taxiing Northwest Airlines flight to turn around at Miami International Airport, according to a news release.

Witnesses told investigators who boarded the plane that Asad was loud, disruptive and claimed to be Palestinian.

Officers didn't find any weapons or explosives on Asad, who was reportedly agitated and aggressive at times, according to an arrest affidavit. Authorities used a stun gun to subdue Asad on the jet bridge after he charged at an officer with fists clenched. He also chanted in a foreign language and threatened officers during a search.

"I'm not afraid of you cops, I've gotten in fights with cops in Ohio and broke their arms in three places," he said, according to the affidavit. "I've broken skulls too!"

The affidavit noted that alcohol didn't appear to be a factor during the incident.

The Transportation Security Administration says three of Asad's companions were also taken off the plane and questioned. The plane departed after a search.

Asad was transported to jail after his arrest.

Note the incidents of late seem to have all taken place on Detroit-bound flights.

This man should not only be tried, and then imprisoned, he should also be forced to pay for the jet fuel wasted, and all the time of all the police and FBI who had to spend resources investigating this incident.

Possibly, his friends ought to be charged as well. Something tells me they were in on this. I don't think this man simply went nuts. This was some sort of probing incident, in my opinion.

The case of the Noor mosque has been raised again in Ohio, and Tarazi has been trying to conceal his connections. There's a screenshot provided of a message by Hany Saqr on Facebook announcing that Tarazi will be speaking at their latest Eid gathering.

I hope this will be addressed in the next court hearing, which appears to be scheduled for January 28th, and I hope there'll be a rally again if needed. Tarazi must be taken off the case, as he is clearly not fit for his job.

On a related note, I initially got some info confused in this earlier item about the Global Revolution Church worker named Brian Smith. I don't think he's a leader there, but he was an employee there. But whatever his position there, I do hope a motion will be filed to learn whether he gave the Bary parents the Lorenz's mail illegally, and the Barys and their lawyers should be made to testify.

Huge Clashes in Egypt After Coptic Church Attack

Thousands clashed with police during a funeral procession Thursday for the seven people killed in an attack on churchgoers leaving a midnight Mass for Coptic Christians, security officials said.

The protesters pelted cars with stones. Earlier, they smashed ambulances at the hospital in frustration over delays in turning over the bodies for burial. A security official says police fired tear gas to disperse the crowd.

The official and witnesses spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue.

The riots follow an attack the previous night, in which three gunmen in a car sprayed automatic gunfire into a crowd leaving a church in the town of Nag Hamadi, about 40 miles from the ancient ruins of Luxor. The lead attacker was identified as a Muslim.

At least five Coptic Christians have been killed in a drive-by shooting outside a church in southern Egypt, officials say.

The shooting came as worshippers left the church in Naj Hammadi after a midnight mass on Coptic Christmas Eve.

Unidentified gunmen sprayed gunfire indiscriminately into the crowd, officials said.

Two Muslims passing the church were among 10 people reportedly injured in the attack.

Naj Hammadi is 40 miles (64km) from Luxor, southern Egypt's biggest city.

Coptic Christians account for about 10% of the Egypt's population of 80 million.

An anti-Egypt rally in southern Gaza turned deadly on Wednesday when demonstrators rushed the border fence and stoned Egyptian troops on the other side, leading to an exchange of gunfire and the death of an Egyptian soldier. Nine Egyptian soldiers and a dozen Palestinians were wounded from stones and gunfire, witnesses and medics said.

It was the most serious Palestinian-Egyptian violence along the closed Gaza border since Israel’s short-lived invasion more than a year ago, and reflected rising tensions between Gaza’s Hamas rulers and the Egyptian government, which, like Israel, appears determined to keep Gaza isolated. The demonstration, organized by Hamas, protested Egypt’s refusal to allow international aid and solidarity missions into Gaza as well as Egypt’s construction of an underground barrier to obstruct smuggler tunnels. Those tunnels supply both goods and arms to Hamas and Gaza.

As Hamas leaders gave speeches, young men climbed the border fence and threw rocks at the Egyptians, witnesses and police reported, and Palestinian police officers shot in the air to control the crowd, though to little avail. Egyptian troops then shot from their side. “Two Palestinians were instantly wounded from five bullets,” a witness said.

The Egyptian forces also tear-gassed demonstrators who waved Hamas and Turkish flags, witnesses said.

The neo-nazi called James von Brunn who murdered a guard at the Holocaust Museum in Washington has died in the hospital:

WASHINGTON – The 89-year-old man accused of a deadly shooting at Washington's Holocaust museum died Wednesday in a prison hospital. At Butner federal prison in North Carolina, spokeswoman Denise Simmons announced that James von Brunn died shortly before 1 p.m. Wednesday.

Von Brunn's lawyer, A.J. Kramer, called the death "a sad end to a tragic situation," but declined further comment.

The elderly suspect had been awaiting trial for the killing of security guard Stephen T. Johns at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum on June 10. Von Brunn had been wounded by return fire but survived.

Officials at the prison hospital had previously said chronic medical problems had complicated a psychiatric evaluation for the suspect, a white supremacist who prior to the shooting had written racist and anti-Semitic screeds on the Internet.

He should never have received medical treatment to begin with; he should've been sent directly to the prison without it and left to die there. Thank goodness he's gone to hell now.

The UK's attorney general would like to get the authority to veto arrest warrants against Israeli politicians:

(IsraelNN.com) United Kingdom Attorney General, Baroness Patricia Scotland, suggested that British law could be amended to give her office the power to veto arrest warrants for foreign political figures accused of war crimes.

Baroness Scotland's statement was made while delivering the annual Lionel Cohen Lecture of the Law Faculty of Hebrew University in Jerusalem Tuesday night in answer to a question concerning the recent British warrant for the arrest of Israeli Opposition leader Knesset Member Tzipi Livni. An Israeli military delegation also cancelled a trip planned for this week upon being told by the British army that it could not guarantee preventing their possible arrests.

The lecture, entitled “Lawfare: Time for Rules of Engagement," dealt with the dilemmas involved in the response of governments to the misuse of the courts for political ends. Baroness Scotland explained that the government must retain the principle of giving citizens access to the law, but must find a way to prevent abuse of this access as a politically motivated tactic. Britain also cannot give up the right to prosecute real war criminals from other countries so as not to provide them with safe haven.

As much as I'd like to think this great news, I've been too well aware of the mindset dominating the UK for a long time, and can only wonder if conservative politicians will be garunteed the same safety as liberal ones. And if the previous news is any suggestion, the Baroness' words cannot be taken at face value. Nor can we be sure the UK will use future laws passed to ensure that the Hamas, for example, will be prosecuted if they come onto UK soil. So this alone does not give me reason to be optimistic.

OUR HEALTH-CARE SYSTEM AND THE NANNY STATE

The essay below relates an aspect of my personal experience in dealing with our health-care system when Mr. AOW had a serious stroke last fall. He remained in medical-care facilities from September 15 to November 25.

No doubt about it, when Mr. AOW was released from the inpatient hospital stroke rehabilitation center on October 16, he was unable to be cared for at home. In addition to being completely paralyzed on the left side (limbs and trunk), his sense of balance was completely awry: he could fall forward, backward, or to either side at any given moment. His brain didn't know what direction up was! He also suffered from mental confusion. For example, he said, "I know I'm in the hospital here in Virginia, but I feel like I'm in California."

In fact, in spite of the ninety days of coverage supposedly provided by the health-insurance plan the hospital refused to keep Mr. AOW any longer than two weeks or to release him to home. Instead, the hospital and the nursing home teamed up to release him only to a skilled nursing facility, which costs a minimum of $350 per day.

At both the rehab hospital and the nursing home, both of which were in-network facilities of Mr. AOW's health-insurance plan, I was repeatedly advised to obtain Medicare and Medicaid. This mandate, in spite of the fact that Mr. AOW was not eligible for Medicare at the age of fifty-nine and has always had health insurance for, lo, three decades!

When I pointed out to the hospital and the nursing home that Mr. AOW and I had too many assets to qualify for either Medicare or Medicaid, I was advised to liquidate all those assets that Mr. AOW and I had spent a lifetime accumulating, go bankrupt once those assets were consumed by medical care, and become beneficiaries of the Nanny State. By the way, all assets were on the table, including retirement accounts (IRA's).

Looking back, I realize that both the hospital and the nursing home anticipated that Mr. AOW would always be a resident of the nursing home, never mind that he was admitted there for stroke therapy and not as a long-term resident.

After Mr. AOW made substantial progress after several weeks in the nursing home, the day arrived when I informed the health-insurance company and the nursing home that I would be bringing Mr. AOW home in a few weeks. The representative from the health-insurance company again advised me to seek out Medicaid coverage. Talk about having their needle stuck!

Once we established that Medicaid was not an option and that I was indeed determined to bring Mr. AOW home, I was threatened: "We'll have to report you to adult protective services."

So, how did I bring Mr. AOW home without getting arrested? I had in place the necessary paperwork: complete power of attorney and the advanced medical directive, both of which documents gave me conseiderable legal power. I also had on my side our family physician, who was willing to sign the release orders. This last is very important! Had I not placed Mr. AOW under the care of the family physician, the nursing-home physician could have refused to release Mr. AOW, thus forcing us into bankruptcy.

Also of help was a bit of name dropping, specifically, the name of my husband's personal attorney, famous as "the attorney of attorneys." Were he called in, he would own the nursing home by the time he was finished! At that point, the nursing home, recognizing the kind of legal proceedings they could be up against, agreed to starting the necessary paperwork for Mr. AOW's release from the nursing home. The one requirement: that Mr. AOW receive occasional visits from a registered nurse.

I have learned there is some truth in what some of my older relatives used to say: "Once I go into the hospital, I'll never come back home." Hospitals and nursing homes do have the power to hold patients and their families hostage.

Via the necessary legal documents and before illness strikes, arm yourself in advance so that you don't become a victim of the health-care system's trying to push you and your family under the care of the Nanny State. Believe me, the health-care system will try hard to push you in that direction!

And what would have happened under ObamaKare?

Kenyan police say they have deported a Jamaican-born Muslim cleric notorious for preaching racial hatred but have declined to say where he has gone.

Abdullah al-Faisal had been sent to a "friendly neighbouring country" despite trouble finding a country to take him, a police spokesman told the BBC.

But a Muslim group later insisted Faisal was still in Nairobi.

Kenyan officials have said Faisal was being deported because of his "terrorist history".

He has served four years in a UK prison after being convicted of soliciting the murder of Jews and Hindus.

But the authorities have since given mixed signals over Faisal's whereabouts.

Some reports say Kenya has failed to deport him because no other country is willing to have him.

Other reports quote officials as saying he was sent by road to Tanzania on Monday night.

In a new setback for a controversial wind farm proposed off Cape Cod, the National Park Service announced Monday that Nantucket Sound was eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places, guaranteeing further delays for the project.

Known as Cape Wind, the project is the nation’s first planned offshore wind farm and would cover 24 square miles in the sound, an area roughly the size of Manhattan. The park service decision came in response to a request from two Massachusetts Indian tribes, who said the 130 proposed wind turbines would thwart their spiritual ritual of greeting the sunrise, which requires unobstructed views across the sound, and disturb ancestral burial grounds.

The tribes — the Mashpee Wampanoag of Cape Cod and the Aquinnah Wampanoag of Martha’s Vineyard — sought the listing last fall, shortly before a final federal decision on the project was expected. The project has been in the works since 2001 and is strongly supported by Gov. Deval Patrick.

The decision by the National Park Service did not kill the Cape Wind plan, but it erected new hurdles by requiring more negotiations and, possibly, changes to the project, like moving it. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar set a deadline of March 1 for the tribes and the project’s developer, Energy Management Inc., to reach a compromise.

A radical Islamic group planning a protest march through the streets of a town that has achieved iconic status in Britain for honoring the passing hearses of British soldiers killed in Afghanistan ran into a stiff rebuff from the British government on Monday.


Prime Minister Gordon Brown issued a statement saying he was “personally appalled” by the group’s plan to march through the streets of Wootton Bassett, a town 50 miles west of London where townspeople have lined the sidewalks since April 2007 to mourn the passing corteges of British military casualties flown home to the nearby military airbase at Brize Norton.

“Wootton Bassett has a special significance for us all at this time, as it has been the scene of the repatriation of many members of our armed forces who have tragically fallen,” Mr. Brown said. “Any attempt to use this location to cause further distress and suffering to those who have lost loved ones would be abhorrent and offensive.”

Home Secretary Alan Johnson, who is responsible for the police, said in a separate statement that he would support any request from the police or local government officials to ban the march. “I find it particularly offensive that the town, which has acted in such a moving and dignified way in paying tribute to our troops who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country should be targeted in this manner,” he said.

Plans for staging the march were laid out in a letter sent by Anjem Choudary, the leader of a group called Islam4UK, to the families of the 246 British soldiers killed in Afghanistan since the toppling of the Taliban in 2001.

The organization describes itself as a “platform” for promoting the views of an extremist Islamic group, Al Muhajiroun, which praised the perpetrators of the Sept. 11 attacks in the United States as heroes, but disbanded in 2005 in response to a British government order banning it.

Mr. Choudary, a 42-year-old lawyer, told the BBC his group planned to carry “symbolic empty coffins” through Wootton Bassett to honor “Muslim victims” of the conflict in Afghanistan, primarily Afghan civilians. “It’s to highlight the real cost of the war in Afghanistan,” he said. “The sad reality of the situation is that if I were to hold it somewhere else, it would not have the media attention that it has now.”

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. — Rick A. Lazio is on a tear: ripping into corruption and cowardice in Albany, blasting state leaders’ addiction to spending and taxes, warning that New York is on the verge of losing a generation of job seekers to economic decline.

“It breaks my heart,” Mr. Lazio, the former Long Island congressman, tells a few dozen Republicans here in the Finger Lakes.

“People are fed up, they’re disgusted, they’re disillusioned, and they’re scared.”

Now comes the ask. “It is our turn to fix this mess, and not to leave this for our kids and our grandchildren to clean up. Please join me in this great mission.”

Seoul residents slogged through the heaviest snowfall in modern Korean history after a winter storm dumped more than 11 inches today, forcing airports to cancel flights and paralyzing traffic in South Korea's bustling capital.

The snow and icy roads snarled traffic in and out of Seoul, and at least three people died in traffic accidents. Many commuters squeezed into packed subways to get to work, and a Cabinet meeting was delayed because ministers were stuck in traffic.

The snowfall, which continued through the afternoon, was the heaviest in a single day since Korea began conducting meteorological surveys in 1937, the state weather agency said.

The US Secret Service says it is investigating after an effigy of Barack Obama was found hanging in the home town of former President Jimmy Carter.

TV footage showed the doll hanging by a noose in front of a red, white and blue sign that reads "Plains, Georgia. Home of Jimmy Carter, our 39th President". Witnesses said the effigy had President Obama's name on it.

Plains Mayor L.E. Godwin III said the fire department had been called to take it down.

In Washington, US Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan confirmed that the agency was investigating the case.

He may yet get his health reform package, but only in the teeth of great public resistance. More Americans simply don't like what he's doing with health care than do.

The great “cool” of Mr. Obama – essentially all those qualities that marked him as the non-George Bush, the anti-George Bush – is wearing a little thin now that Mr. Bush is really no longer a figure in play. That cool now is seen as a troubling lack of affect, an unsettling passionlessness.

What really, in his public role, captures or commands the fundamental energies of Mr. Obama? What are his core convictions and aspirations? It's very hard to tell.

His eloquence is fading, more people now find it more a trick of rhythm and cadence – a mannerism – rather than felt thought in memorable language. His recent statement to an anxious America after the Christmas Day bomb plot was flat, off-key and utterly unpersuasive. He went to Copenhagen, played the frantic for the better part of a day and came home essentially empty-handed. Hugo Chavez is mocking him in precisely the same terms as he mocked poor Mr. Bush.

Most of all, Mr. Obama has exploded his own credentials as the agent of (genuine) hope and change. The promise to remodel the essentially harsh nature of modern politics, to seek transformation in the tone and substance of public life, to end Washington's buying and selling, is seen now, and seen very reluctantly such was the real hope he inspired, as empty. His White House is as dagger partisan as Richard Nixon's.

LOL: Iran Denies Kerry's Request to Visit

Iranian legislators on Sunday decided to not allow a visit from Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman John Kerry (D-Mass.), according to Iranian media.

"Members of the Iranian parliament's Foreign Relations Committee (a subcommittee of the parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission) voiced opposition to the request after studying the issue," Hassan Ebrahimi, head of the committee, told the semi-official Fars News Agency.

Several Iranian news outlets reported last week that Kerry had submitted an official request to visit Tehran in an emissary role.

Kerry spokesman Frederick Jones told the Wall Street Journal before Christmas, though, that no trip had been scheduled. "Is he planning now on going to Iran? The answer is no," said Jones.

When asked Sunday if Kerry had filed a travel request as claimed or if Iran had taken pre-emptive action against talk of a visit, Jones told The Hill, "John Kerry has no plans to travel to Iran."

Laura Rozen did a good job parsing what "no plans" means, which is basically that Kerry had every intention of trying to talk to the mullahs, if not doing so in Iran. Well, that's not happening, either.

On Saturday, Iranian legislators stepped up the rhetoric against the news that Kerry was considering traveling to Tehran with the blessing of the White House.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran has no plans to negotiate with any American official, unless the country (the U.S.) changes its policies," member of the parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Zohreh Elahian said, according to Fars News Agency.

Awesome. Why is Kerry trying to talk to these psychopaths? We should be killing them, because here's what's going to happen one way or another: either the mullahs flee to Russia or they get killed by us, their own people, or Israel (tacitly on behalf of the Arabs as well as themselves, as with Osirak).
