TALIBAN: BIN LADEN SHUTTLES BETWEEN CHINA-TAJIK BORDER AND AFGHANI-PAKISTANI BORDER

AKI:
Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden was hiding in the remote mountains on the Afghani-Pakistani border and moving constantly to avoid detection by intelligence agencies, according to a Taliban sympathiser.

Ahmad Farooq, a Pakistani Pashtun has told the Italian daily, Corriere della Sera, that bin Laden had been moving from village to village in the area from Chitral to the "corridor of Waqan", [alternately Wakhan] the mountainous Hindu Kush region of Pakistan bordering Tajikstan and China.
[Area marked with red typeface in the map.]

...
"There are always 20 armed men with him, free from satellite telephones so that they did not risk detection by the Americans," he told the newspaper.

"Not far from him there are two other similar groups that move in parallel. Osama passes from one to the other often many times in a week. No-one knows which group he is with at any time."

Farooq said bin Laden had also managed to hide in the Pakistan-China border area of Karakorum, an uninhabited remote area, because it is guarded by Chinese troops.

"He lives like a monk," Farooq said. "His health is not good. He is 50 years old. But he looks much older. He relies continutally on medicine for his weak kidneys and has a breathing apparatus.
"He almost died a few years ago from bronchitis that developed into pneumonia."

Farooq conducted the interview in Imam Dheray, in the Swat Valley where there has been widespread bloody conflict between the Pakistani security forces and the fugitive rebel leader and radical cleric, Mullah Fazlullah, and his supporters in recent weeks.

... Farooq gave many details about where bin Laden had been since September 11 2001 - hiding in the Afghan province of Khost until it became too dangerous for him. Then, he said, the al-Qaeda leader moved to the Chitral region, in northern Pakistan.

"I saw him for the last time on 17 September 2003 not far from Dir, my village, " he said. "His caravan was moving slowly. They told me he was not well. They didn't seem worried about being detected by the Americans.
"Instead, they were looking for medicines and a warm place for the night. In that area winter arrives early. With the first snow fall the passes are closed at more than 4,000 metres and you have to wait for spring.

"I think they only went to China in summer, when the paths are clear."

A senior official from NATO's security services told the Italian daily's magazine such an account of bin Laden's activities was "quite possible".

He said "We believe he remained in the mountains in the zones of Chitral and Swat. The detail about China was however new."
A FEW SMALL NUKES SHOULD DO THE TRICK.

HILLARY'S HEALTH

Do you remember how we used to see Bill Clinton jogging all the time while he campaigned in 1991 and 1992?

Clinton was the young "New" Democrat running against two old guys: GHW Bush and Ross Perot.

The jogging emphasized that.

Well, how many of you would like to see HILLARY in a jogging suit bounding up and down the sidewalk?

Not many.

What if her bosom-buddy Huma Abedin joined her?

Maybe. Huma is a hottie.

And I wouldn't have to look at Hillary.

Well, even though I wouldn't like to see Hillary jog, I'd still like to see her medical records.

She's at an age where things start to go wrong.

We have a right to know if she's healthy and if she's on any medication.

Maybe Obama ought to start jogging on the campaign trail?

Hillary says Social Security isn't in trouble after all!

Hillary Clinton on 10/30/2007:

I think, for us to act like Social Security is in crisis is a Republican trap. We're playing on the Republican field. And I don't intend to do that.

Oh, thank goodness! Social Security isn't in trouble!

On second thought, if Hillary is to be believed, she didn't know anything about the fraudulent Whitewater land deals, Paula Jones, Henry Cisneros' crimes, Vince Foster's magical copy of the Rose Law Firm files, Travelgate, Kathleen Willey, Chinagate, Juanita Broaddrick, Peter Paul, Norman Hsu, or a host of other outrageous activities.

So maybe we should worry about Social Security after all.

In all seriousness, can you imagine what it feels like to flat-out lie about Social Security in front of a national audience? Even her most ardent supporters have to shudder when they hear statements like that.

ANTI-WAR NUTS DESTROY FLAGS

Sad to say this destruction by anti-war nuts on Veteran's Day happened in KC and I've been so busy I didn't hear about it until Mike brought it to my attention. Kudos to Amy for posting the video and alerting everyone to the latest in the despicable acts of the anti-war left.

CHINA'S OLD JEWISH COMMUNITY

The Covenant website (via Daled Amos) writes about the Chinese Jews, the Kaifeng community, who'd been prominent many centuries ago.

ALMOST ALL THE FOOTAGE FROM THE AL-DURAH BLOOD LIBEL HAS BEEN PRESENTED TO THE COURT

Melanie Phillips went to Paris to witness the court hearing in which the footage was finally produced for everyone to see regarding Mohammed al-Durah. Well, almost all the footage. What Charles Enderlin and his cameraman had to offer was 18 minutes of footage out of 27. If so, it wouldn't surprise me if they were trying to cover anything up, and still do what they could to avoid admittance of guilt. Prof. Richard Landes talks about it more over here.

I think another appeal should be made to demand that Enderlin release ALL footage to ensure that he doesn't try to evade justice. Of course by now, you have to wonder, as Melanie asked some time ago, if we'll discover that the footage has been lost, meaning that Enderlin will be trying to destroy evidence? We should hope that won't be the case, but as Melanie says, Enderlin was quite pathetic.

Black Activist Slams "Buckwheat" Blackout

Louisiana Liberal Given a Pass:

"After a Louisiana state representative called a noted local civil rights activist "Buckwheat," Project 21 chairman Mychal Massie is criticizing both the lawmaker for saying it and the media for once again appearing to take a pass on reporting about a liberal politician's racial foible.

Hazel Boykin, a 75-year-old civil rights activist who helped desegregate Louisiana restaurants and schools, helped Democratic State Representative Carla Blanchard Dartez get voters to the polls earlier this month. At the end of a private telephone conversation thanking Boykin for her efforts, Representative Dartez said, "Talk to you later, Buckwheat."

Buckwheat was one of the black characters featured in the "Our Gang" movie shorts of the 1930s and 1940s whose stereotypical image is considered an insult today. Boykin told the Associated Press: "I've never had no one talk to me that way and I consider is a racial slur... I know the meaning of it, it's just like the n-word." Representative Dartez said, "I regret my choice of words," and cited her 93 percent voting record with the legislature's Black Caucus as proof she is not a racist.

That good ol' double standard again. Things that would be headlined across the country if a conservative said it do not even get a mention in most media outlets.

The three great "truths" of Leftist America:

1). Only whites can be racist

2). Only conservatives can utter "hate speech"

3). Israel is always in the wrong.

"Islamophobia" and antisemitism

There is no such thing as Islamophobia. Phobias are irrational fears. There is nothing irrational about fearing and disliking people who blow up your buildings, trains, buses and nightclubs. And since the 7/7 atrocity in Britain -- which was committed by Muslims who seemed to be well-assimilated into British society -- it is reasonable to fear or be wary of ALL Muslims. Nobody can tell which Muslim might be the next mass-murderer. It could be your neighbour or workmate and you could be among the victims.

So the term "Islamophobia" is just another attempt by Leftists to stigmatize normal attitudes. "Homophobia" is similarly misapplied. People who dislike or disapprove of homosexuality do not at all need to FEAR homosexuals. They may simply be disgusted by the thought of it -- as many are -- or they may think that the behaviour is simply wrong for one reason or another.

The term "Islamophobia" is useful for Leftists in many ways, however. There seems to be a fashion -- particularly in Europe -- to equate "Islamophobia" with antisemitism -- which is brain dead. I concede that many antisemites are perfectly rational people in general but it remains true that antisemitism is roughly as irrational as "Islamophobia" is rational. Only a Leftist would be unable to see the difference. Where Muslims are largely parasitical on Western civilization, Jews are great contributors to it, for instance.

A recent article in the WSJ makes similar points to what I have said above but makes that a jumping-off-place for discussing yet again the origins of antisemitism. The explanation favoured by the author -- Uriya Shavit -- is however a rather fanciful one. It is, somewhat amazingly, an attempt to show that there ARE important commonalities between "Islamophobia" and antisemitism. Shavit claims that both Jews and Muslims have territorial loyalties as well as religious loyalties. Jews are loyal to the land of Israel and Muslims are loyal to the Muslim "world" or "Ummah".

It is difficult to know where to start in commenting on that. For a start, it is a classic antisemitic slur to say that Jews have dual loyalties. I suppose it is true of some Jews to an extent but Shavit seems to be endorsing it as being true of Jews in general. And the claim that people are fearful of Muslims because of dreams in Muslim heads rather than because of what many Muslims actually DO is extraordinary.

I wonder if Shavit and A.B. Yehoshua (the writer to whom Shavit attributes his ideas) have ever talked to any actual antisemites. I spent some years doing so (see here, here and here) and found that most of the usual explanations for antisemitism were correct: Envy, scapegoating, a need for explanation etc. I also however found that the rather tribal morality that a subset of Jews practice was known and objected to (See here). So there is some minor rationality in antisemitism of that sort. Anybody who cannot see the difference between peaceful Jews and the actively hostile Muslims is not being serious, however.

As always, reality is complex but the reality Shavit discusses is one of the central issues of the day so dreamy simplifications of it do us all a great disservice.

So if "Islamophobia" is a myth, what expression should we use to describe wariness towards Muslims? Perhaps not surprisingly, we lag behind Germans in the matter. The two German terms "Judenhass" and "Muslimhass" are short and to the point: Translatable as "Jew-hate" and "Muslim-hate". Both terms are however exaggerations. I do know some antisemites who really do hate Jews and I have no doubt that some Germans hate Muslims but there are also many people who are simply wary or distrustful rather than actively hating anybody.

I think therefore that we should avoid ALL simplifications of this important matter. If we are talking about hatred of Muslims we should say "hatred of Muslims" and if we are talking about distrust of Muslims we should say "distrust of Muslims". Treating all negative attitudes towards Muslims as the same is a denial of reality.

I have also gone to great length to distinguish different negative attitudes towards Jews (See here and here) but I acknowledge that the term is too useful as shorthand for it to be abandoned.

Leftist "anti-Zionists" do however object to being called "antisemites" and they are correct in doing so. Some of them are stupid enough to believe all the old conspiracy theories of classical antisemitism but most hate Jews and Israel simply because both are successful and flourishing. They hate America and "the rich" for the same reason. So even use of the term "antisemitism" does obscure important truths. Unlike "Islamophobia", however, "antisemitism" does not embody false claims about mental health, so is much less pernicious.

Footnote: Being an incorrigible academic, I cannot resist noting that the term "antisemitism" (Antisemitismus) was coined in 1879 by a German (oddly enough!) named Wilhelm Marr -- who was hostile to Jews even though (because?) he was married to one!

STEALING TO OBTAIN THE AMERICAN DREAM

Having your driver's license stolen can have devastating and long-lasting consequences. From this article in the Washington Post:
The woman who took a stranger's driver's license and used it to buy a $419,000 townhouse in Fairfax County last year was sentenced to five years in prison yesterday.

The scheme unraveled for Elizabeth Cabrera-Rivera, 40, not when she obtained two mortgages for the house in the stranger's name, or when she deeded the house to herself. It was when she refinanced her second mortgage, and the bank sent an overpayment check to the stranger, that Cabrera-Rivera was caught. She was arrested at the BB&T bank in Arlington County that figured out her scheme.

The victim of the identity theft, Jose Lara of Winchester, told an Arlington Circuit Court judge yesterday that the fraud had devastated him financially. When he went to refinance the house he lives in with his wife and three children, he was turned down. When he sought a business loan for his trucking company, he was refused and had to sell the company at a $70,000 loss. His one line of credit was reduced from $9,500 to $1,000, Lara said.

Arlington Deputy Commonwealth's Attorney Evie Eastman asked Lara what credit issuers say when he tells them he has been a crime victim. "They say that it's something they just can't believe," Lara said. "I've had to shut down everything completely. I just have my job [with a printing company]. That's all I have right now."

[...]

"His life is in ruins right now," Eastman said of Lara. "It is going to be an uphill battle for Mr. Lara to clear his name."
A little play for sympathy for the criminal in the article:
Cabrera-Rivera "never intended to cause Mr. Lara these problems," said her lawyer, Alberto Salvado. "Her whole plan was to actually have a house in her name. It was not intended to use Mr. Lara and leave him with the bill to pay for everything."

...Cabrera-Rivera's "whole intent in this was to have a piece of the American dream," Salvado said, decided to buy a house.

[...]

Eastman said Cabrera-Rivera and her husband were laborers who did not earn enough money to buy a $419,000 townhouse, but a mortgage broker got them the loan in Lara's name. Eastman said Cabrera-Rivera also opened a joint bank account in her and Lara's name, causing Lara further credit problems....
Cabrera-Rivera received a five-year sentence. The mortgage company, which likely has assets beyond those of the criminals, escaped accountability, so Lara has little hope of any financial assistance. His dream of a lucrative business is delayed, if not completely unreachable now. Cabrera-Rivera can sob all she wants. She's not the victim here.

GOT ANOTHER AL QAEDA BIGGIE IN IRAQ

KUNA: US army identifies body of key Al-Qaeda figure in Iraq
The US army said Wednesday it has positively identified the body of Al-Qaeda leader in northern Baghdad.

In a press release, the army said the terrorist, Th'ir Malik was killed during a raid on November five in northern Baghdad's Al-Tarmiyah town.

In charge of 120 Al-Qaeda elements, "Malik was a subordinate of Abu Ghazwan, the Al-Qaeda in Iraq senior leader of the northern belt and direct associate of Abu Ayyub al-Masri," noted the army.

It added "This was a dangerous terrorist who is no longer part of the al-Qaeda in Iraq network."

AL QAEDA THREATENS CHRISTMAS BOMB BLITZ IN THE UK

MIRROR: Al-Qaeda's Xmas bomb blitz
EXCLUSIVE Shock terror warning

Shopping centres and sports stadiums are Al-Qaeda's top targets for a Christmas bombing blitz, it was revealed yesterday.

A chilling security report warns that fanatics are determined to inflict a masscasualty attack in the UK.

Gordon Brown is expected to give a terror update to the Commons at midday.

It will come just hours after Security Minister, Alan West has presented his report, Security in Crowded Places, to the PM.

A top security source said the message was stark.

He told The Mirror: "Al Qaeda are determined to carry out an attack in the UK. They want mass casualties, iconic targets and mass media coverage where the television cameras are present."

He added: "Sports stadiums and shopping centres are most at risk where large numbers of people are congregated in one place, especially over the festive season."
  • I DON'T LIKE THE SOUND OF THIS - OR LAST WEEKS LEAK ABOUT SIMILAR PLANS AL QAEDA HAS FOR LA AND CHICAGO.

  • I DON'T THINK THEY'RE LEAKING EVERYTHING TO US.

Islamo-misogyny is Beginning to Get Attention

Exposing islamo-misogyny and proposing a non-military way of attacking it has been a campaign of mine.

EXCERPT:
I believe that the root cause of islamo-terrorism is islamo-misogyny: a people whose ideology teaches that woman must never be seen in public or have the freedom to dress as they please, and teaches its young men that it's okay (1) to beat their wiveS (PLURAL!), and (2) force their daughters to marry their cousins, and (3) kill their sisters for "dishonoring" their family, will of teach these same young men that it is okay to commit genocidal terror against infidels.

...

This is why I believe that in addition to killing jihadists and to promoting democracy in Muslim states, we need to put pressure on Muslim states to accept and enforce the UN's Declaration of Universal Human Rights, and to extend full and equal status to women, and pressure them to:

(a) ban forced marriage, and
(b) ban polygamy, and
(c) ban consanguineous marriage).

If they fail to address these anti-humane practices they should be be expelled from the UN and banned from participation in any-and-all multi-lateral financial, international aid, and international trade groups - like UNICEF, UNESCO, the IMF, the World Bank and the WTO, etc.

I have previously posted several articles at this blog relating empirical evidence on the harmful nature of these pervasive practices. (Google it at this blog under "polygamy", "misogyny" and "endogamy".)

REPEAT: As long as their children are raised to accept terror within their own family, they will use certainly terror to settle all their differences with non-Muslims. And they will certainly condone genocide against infidels.

The pressure I suggest we use on this front would be non-military and diplomatic. And it would be applied universally so it would effect the entire ummah, every Muslim state, and every family. Therefore, liberals (even doves) have no reason - and therefore no excuse - not to support it fully.

...

BOTTOM-LINE: We should no more tolerate the radical misogyny permitted in these nations, than tolerate SLAVERY.
We need to begin to go on the offensive against islamo-misigyny.

It's nice to see a big blogger and a MSM newspaper cover it.

POWER LINE has the links. EXCERPT:
It seems to me that, as the Examiner puts it, "America should aggressively support and encourage such organizations and put the rights of women in Muslim countries front and center on the world stage at the United Nations."
WE MUST MAKE THIS FIGHT.

FOR THE CHILDREN.

THE FEMALE CHILDREN.

ISRAELI KNESSET MOVES TO PREVENT OLMERT FROM GIVING AWAY JERUSALEM

HAARETZ: Amendment to Basic Law on Jerusalem shakes up coalition
Officially, the government took no stand Wednesday on the matter of amending the Basic Law on Jerusalem, and the coalition allowed its members to vote their conscience. Most Kadima MKs stayed away. In other words: at least for the preliminary reading, the coalition expressed its blessing more than its objection to the bill seeking, ahead of the Annapolis conference, to hobble the government and prevent it from making concessions in Jerusalem. Six ministers backed the bill. Only Labor's ministers voted against it, including Raleb Majadele, who announced the day before in the same place that Israeli law does not apply to the Temple Mount.

Under the amendment, proposed by MK Gideon Sa'ar (Likud) and 25 other MKs, a majority of 80 MKs would be required to concede any territory or jurisdiction in Jerusalem.
I THINK THE ARABS SHOULD GET ONE SQUARE MILE FOR EACH TIME JERUSALEM IS MENTIONED IN THE KORAN.

THAT'S EXACTLY ZERO SQUARE MILES.

Al Gore: Set to Profit from Eco-Suckaz... again

First there was global warming hysteria, aided and abetted by Al Gore's lucrative book-and-movie deal. Next, his stewardship of an investment company called Generation Investment Management, poised to take advantage of various eco-regulations. Most recently, Gore has joined a green venture capital firm to -- well, as CNN puts it -- "save the planet." Oh, and possibly make some serious coin along the way, too.

Why do I get the distinct impression that the only thing Gore is interested in saving are dividends from the eco-suckaz' money?

RELIAPUNDIT: I CALL THEM ECO-NUTSIES.

NYTIMES: "ISRAELI PM OLMERT SETS NEW CONDITIONS ON PALESTINIAN TALKS"

From the New York Times and Reuters:
Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said on Wednesday talks on Palestinian statehood must be predicated on the recognition of Israel as "the state of the Jewish people," a new Israeli condition.

Palestinian leaders swiftly rejected Olmert's demand and the issue threatened to complicate attempts to draft a joint document that would serve as the foundation for a U.S.-hosted Middle East conference later this month.

Israel and the Palestinians regard the international gathering in Annapolis, Maryland, as a launching point for talks on statehood, including "core issues" such as borders, the future of Jerusalem and millions of Palestinian refugees.

Olmert's office said he told the European Union's top diplomat, Javier Solana, that Israel insisted "the foundation for the post-Annapolis negotiations with the Palestinians be recognition of the State of Israel as the state of the Jewish people."

Differences over the issue emerged this week when Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat said Palestinians would not accept Israel as a "Jewish state," a definition that could help Olmert argue against a return of refugees in a final deal.

Although Olmert has now put the demand on the record, his use of the phrase "state of the Jewish people," rather than "Jewish state," could leave room for diplomatic maneuvering.

"We do not accept conditions of this type, not at all," said Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad on Al Arabiya television.
This whole process leading up to the Annapolis Summit has completely mystified me to be frank. Why would Israel meet with Abbas?

RELIAPUNDIT ADDS: First off, the headline is a BIG LIE: THIS IS NIT A NEW DEMAND.

B,ut that this is A FREAKIN PROBLEM FOR EREKAT AND ABBAS IS FREAKIN HORRIBLE. This is square one.

If Abbas can't do this then he is of no use at all. And neither is this sham of a mockery of a travesty that Bush and Rice call "a peace process."

George Bush - the first president to call for a Palestinian state has also said time-after-time that he supports the Jewish state of Israel. Olmert is merely making this more clear; it is NOT a new demand.

One of the chief reasons the last serious negotiations broke down - when BJ Clinton and Ehud Barak and Arafat were handling things - was that Barak could not accept the return of Arab "refugees into Israel.

Even Olmert can't accept that. And It might be especially tough now, politically, as Arabs who have been living in east Jerusalem for decades have lately been applying for Israeli citizenship - as if in some concerted effort to gain leverage.

That Israel must remain a Jewish state is paramount. If Bush and Rice renege on this it will be the end for them.

And any new Arab state must recognize and accept Israel and STOP JIHADOTERROR.

Or there is no deal.

Just war.

Governor Prays For Rain - Lefties Want Formal Response

The Governor of the state of Georgia, which is mired in a terrible drought, thought to raise up a prayer to God for rain:
ATLANTA -- Bowing his head outside the Georgia Capitol on Tuesday, Gov.
Sonny Perdue cut a newly repentant figure as he publicly prayed for rain to end
the region's historic drought.

"Oh father, we acknowledge our wastefulness," Perdue said. "But we're doing
better. And I thought it was time to acknowledge that to the creator, the
provider of water and land, and to tell him that we will do better."

Hundreds of Georgians -- ministers and lawmakers, landscapers and office
workers -- gathered in downtown Atlanta for the prayer vigil. Some held bibles
and crucifixes. Many swayed and linked arms as a choir sang "What a Mighty God
We Serve" and "Amazing Grace."

As Perdue described it, "We have come together, very simply, for one reason
and one reason only: To very reverently and respectfully pray up a storm."

"It's got to be worth a shot," said David Mais, 34, an Atlanta resident who
is worried his carpet cleaning business could suffer from the drought. "I do
think we need to do a lot more, but hopefully prayer will unite us."

As metropolitan Atlanta's water supplies drain to record lows, many across
the Southeast have criticized Perdue and other Georgia officials for failing to
introduce more stringent conservation measures.

Perdue, who wore a green suit and brown cowboy boots, seemed to acknowledge
that the drought afflicting Georgia was a man-made, as well as natural, problem.
Georgians, he said, had not done "all we could do in conservation."
Meanwhile, the lefties are pissed and they seem to be demanding a formal response of some kind (although they are being vague about what such a response would look like):
About a block way, more than 20 protesters -- some carrying placards saying
"All hail Sonny Perdue" and "Is it raining yet?" -- joined a rally organized by
the Atlanta Freethought Society. The vigil, they said, violated the principle of
separation of church and state.

"The governor is exceeding his constitutional authority," said Ed Buckner,
an atheist and treasurer of the group. "He has no right to set up prayer
services on behalf of the people of Georgia, particularly not on the grounds of
the state Capitol."
Exceeding his Constitutional Authority?!?

What do they want, then? Should we call the Feds in? Do we formal response from one of the three branches of our government?

Oh no, he prayed. The Governor prayed. Call someone about a class-action lawsuit. What, you say that won't work? Then, call the ACLU. Get the Supreme Court on the phone.

Wait, what do you mean no one is taking this that seriously?

I have an idea. Maybe the lefties could raise taxes on the sun in order to change the weather patterns. I don't know.

This is going to require some new thinking. Perhaps, we need a third way. Or, whatever.

DANISH ELECTION: WINNERS AND LOSERS

Yesterday the right of center V/K/Ø government led by Anders Fogh Rasmussen, secured re-election, with the support of 1 mandate from the Færø Islands, and without need for support of the new Ny Alliance party. Many, including Gateway Pundit, call it a "great" victory. But as far as the results are concerned - 90 parliamentiary seats to V/K/Ø vs. 89 for the Left, the margin of victory was narrow, and it demonstrates that danes are still split very close down the middle. So who were the winners and the losers?

Let's start with the biggest loser: Naser Khader and the Ny Alliance. When they first emerged as the fresh breeze that promised to shift the political balance away from the "block politics" controlled by Pia Kærsgaard and the extreme right Danish Folkeparty to the center, Ny Alliance were predicted by opinion polls to take 21 parliamentary seats. Fogh Rasmussen's decision to call for early elections caught the party unprepared. The 3 week campaign revealed a party without a concrete platform, and a leader - Khader - bereft of the public speaking skills to prevent most of their projected support from evaporating. And Khader was able to add a few strategic blunders to their miserable performance.

Winners on the right: Pia Kærsgaard and the Dansk Folkeparti. Throughout the campaign DF was under constant attack for her party's coarse anti-immigrant, and anti-muslim rhetoric and their firm behind-the-scenes control of the government (while they hold no minister posts DF hold the key to Fogh's parliamentary majority). It was clear that while the opposition cast their collective spleen against Pia and DF, their own coalition members- the Conservatives and Venstre, were reticent to come to their aid. Kærsgaard bit back her anger/pain and kept to her party's platform. This was rewarded by Dansk Folkeparti's voters, who are indifferent to the criticism employed by the left, and the party gained one mandate.

Winners on the Left: Helle Thorning-Schmidt, Social Democratic Party, and Villy Sovndal, Socialist Folkeparti. Both candidates displayed charisma and good speaking ability while they succeeded in moving their parties slightly towards the center. While the Social Democrats made no real gains, Thorning- Schmidt gained tons of credibility. Perhaps she is already deemed worthy to become denmark's first female primeminister.

The Socialist Folkeparti picked up a huge number of young "swing" voters - and doubled their presence in the Parliament. This may foreshadow a possible change of government in the next election.

Losers on the Left: Extreme left Enhedslisten just made the minimum to continue their presence in Parliament. Radical Venstre, coming off a stellar election last time round, were damaged by the ego of former party leader Marianne Jelved, which led to the exit of Naser Khader. The new leader, Margrethe Vestager was unable to develop a platform that was capable of shifting votes across the center.

Interestingly enough the EU, and the Danish presence in Iraq and Afghanistan, were not top issues in the election. All the parties agreed that Schools, Healthcare, and the Environment were key issues - and they were not able to delineate strong differences on these issues to swing votes or damage their opponents. The election more closely resembled a US election, with emphasis on personalities and talking points, spin, and rhymming rhetoric.

With an 86% voter turnout this was a great victory for DEMOCRACY. Let us not forget those who made the greatest sacrifice in the last century so danes could enjoy it.

RICE IGNORES POLLS SHOWING THAT ISRAELIS OPPOSE CONCESSIONS TO FATAH

Condi Rice continues to show why she's not a credible politician, by conning people assembled at UJC in Nashville. And the biggest mistake she made in her speech is that:
...she misrepresented public opinion polls, asserting that "almost all" Israelis support unilateral withdrawals from Judea and Samaria, and handovers of territory to the Palestinian Authority, when in fact the opposite is the case.

The most recent poll, conducted by Ma'agar Mohot and sponsored by the Israel Policy Center for Promoting Parliamentary Democracy and Jewish Values in Israeli Public Life, an overwhelming majoity of Israelis opposed major concession of territory to the PA. Some 65% of respondents said that due to the lessons of 2005's disengagement from the Gaza Strip, they opposed a large withdrawal in the West Bank, and 61% said they opposed removing IDF soldiers from most of the West Bank and giving control over the territory to the Palestinians.

The reasons for the opposition were clear. In the event of a withdrawal, 55% believe the territory would be used to fire rockets at Israelis and 65% believe there is a high or very high chance that Hamas would take control of the area. Some 77% said Abbas lacked the power to prevent attacks from the West Bank. [...]

But there was even worse news in the opinion polls for Israeli PM Ehud Olmert. A majority of 55% of Israelis believe that the Knesset should suspend or oust him due to several criminal investigations against him.
Yes, agreed. An outgoing prosecuting attorney said on TV that the police have seized some very incriminating evidence against Olmert, and if so, then he should be charged.

MISLEADING LABELS

According to this article in the November 14, 2007 edition of the Washington Post, the thinktank Thomas B. Fordham Institute, which advocates rigorous standards for education, recently graded some Advanced Placement (AP) courses, in which some 14,000 students are enrolled and by which high-school students can receive college credit if they pass the AP exams. Literature courses received a B+, history courses a B-, biology courses an A-, and calculus courses a C-. Compared to the marks which Fordham Institute awarded state standards, those for AP courses were significantly higher than for regular-track courses. However, the report found particular fault with math and history courses because

math [programs]...allowed more use of calculators than the authors considered appropriate. AP U.S. History was faulted for mentioning few specific historical events in its course plan....The authors advised teachers to ignore the [course] outlines....
College Board, which oversees AP courses as mentioned above, has a different take than the Fordham Institute when it comes to history courses. Specifically, College Board has indicated that AP courses should

[pursue] changes to social studies courses that might encourage "more time talking about such themes as 'politics and citizenship' or 'continuity and change,' " which report authors worried would reduce time for learning facts about historical events.
That issue of time is, in my opinion, a valid concern. Teachers and students do not have unlimited time to cover course material. Furthermore, just how are students supposed to talk in a reasoned manner about such themes if facts and events are not the basis of such discussions? Maybe the students are supposed to rely on hunches and feelings — those stand-bys of leftist education....

New finding: Arctic melting caused by change in ocean circulation

And this one is NOT a hoax. GRL is a most prestigious publication

Global warming over the past decade or so isn't all about coal, gasoline and other greenhouse gases, space scientists said Tuesday. Melting Arctic Ocean sea ice may have been caused by a reversal in the ocean's circulation that had been going on for about a decade, scientists from NASA and the University of Colorado said. Whether that reversal in direction was caused in large part by warmth generated by greenhouse gas is a question for another day.

The scientists used both deep-sea pressure gauges and NASA's twin satellites, the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment, to measure tiny changes in the weight of columns of water from the surface to the ocean bottom, between 2002 and 2006. The two GRACE satellites travel in tandem and monitor tiny hair's-breadth changes in Earth's gravity field caused by the movement of water. Meanwhile, the pressure gauges on the sea floor directly measure water pressure there. "The close agreement between the North Pole pressure gauges and GRACE data demonstrates GRACE's potential for tracking world ocean circulation," said CU-Boulder physics Professor John Wahr, who co-authored the study that appears in the current issue of Geophysical Research Letters.

The weight of a column of water in the ocean is influenced by such things as the height of the ocean's surface and its salinity. A saltier ocean is heavier and circulates differently than one with less salt. The scientists found a 10-millibar decrease in water pressure at the bottom of the Ocean at the North Pole between 2002 and 2006. That is equal to removing the weight of four inches of water from the ocean, Wahr said. That much drop in water pressure suggests that the Arctic Ocean changed back to a clockwise circulation, the scientists said. The Arctic Ocean had been circulating clockwise prior to 1990, but had been turning counterclockwise in the 1990s.

The change was sparked by a weakened Arctic Oscillation, which reduced the amount of salt in the upper ocean near the North Pole. That slightly decreased the weight of a column of water, changing the water's circulation direction. "Our study confirms that many changes seen in upper Arctic Ocean circulation in the 1990s were mostly decadal in nature, rather than trends caused by global warming," said project leader James Morrison of the University of Washington's Polar Science Center Applied Physics Laboratory.

The Arctic Oscillation was fairly stable until about 1970, but has varied on an approximate 10-year time scale since then. It was turning strongly counterclockwise in the 1990s, during which time the Arctic Ocean lost a lot of its ice, prompting many scientists to view the changes as evidence of an ongoing climate shift. The fact that it can change every decade or so indicates how short-term the oscillations can be, Morrison said.

In fact, the Arctic Ocean circulation seemed to have shifted again in the winter of 2006-07, commensurate with the lowest ice expanse in recorded history. While there is no direct connection between global warming and the Arctic Oscillation, most climate models predict the oscillation will become more strongly counterclockwise in the future, Morrison said. "The events of the 1990s may well be a preview of how the Arctic will respond over longer periods of time in a warming world," he said
