Practising Muslims will outnumber worshipping Christians in Britain within 30 years, according to research published today.

By 2035, there will be about 1.96 million active Muslims in Britain, compared with 1.63 million church-going Christians, according to calculations by Christian Research, a think- tank.

The figures are published in the latest in a series of reports entitled Religious Trends.

The think-tank has warned that 4,000 churches could close by 2020 if congregations continue to shrink at current rates.

According to the most recent figures from the Church of England, regular Sunday, weekly and monthly attendance each fell by one per cent in 2006.

Commenting on the news that the Stuart Wheeler has won permission to launch a High Court challenge over the Government's refusal to hold a referendum on the EU Reform Treaty, Shadow Foreign Secretary William Hague, said:

"The Government must now put the bill bringing the renamed EU Constitution into force on hold. It was already plain that this deeply unpopular Government had no moral right to impose this Treaty on Britain without any democratic mandate. Now the courts are looking at the legality of denying a referendum. Under these circumstances it would be shockingly arrogant for ministers to carry on as normal.

EUROSKEPTICS WIN ONE IN THE UK

Millionaire Stuart Wheeler has won his battle to force a High Court review into whether the government should hold a referendum on the EU's Lisbon treaty.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown has ruled out a public vote on the treaty, saying it does not alter the UK constitution.

But Mr Wheeler said a vote was promised on the EU constitution and says the Lisbon treaty is virtually identical.

The hearing will be on 9 and 10 June. The Foreign Office said they were "confident" of their case.

In March MPs voted by 346 votes to 206 to approve the EU (Amendment) Bill, after topic-by-topic debates over six weeks.

The Bill - which is now in the Lords - will ratify the Lisbon Treaty, which was drawn up to replace the EU constitution after that was rejected by French and Dutch voters in 2005.

General election

Mr Wheeler, 73, a Conservative Party donor, said his legal challenge was "not trying to interfere with Parliament".

He claims voters had a "legitimate expectation" that a referendum would be held after one was promised in Labour's last election manifesto on the EU constitution.

His lawyer, Rabinder Singh QC, said the application for judicial review was based on "the underlying fundamental principles of good administration, fair play and straight dealing with the public".

Today judges ruled that the challenge can go ahead. The likely two-day court hearing could prove to be very embarrassing for ministers if internal Government memos and emails are revealed.

The legal challenge could also delay the ratification of the controversial treaty by months if court time is not granted shortly. Peers in the House of Lords are due to vote on the legislation later this month.

Mr Wheeler , who made his fortune from City spreadbetting firm IG Index, said: “I am absolutely delighted that we won the case.

“It’s clear to me that we have a very, very strong moral case for a referendum.

The latest opinion poll shows a dramatic swing against the Lisbon Treaty, with the 'Yes' side leading by just 6% when undecideds are excluded.

The Red C poll in tomorrow's Sunday Business Post has been welcomed by anti-Lisbon campaigners, while the Government says the result is disappointing, but not entirely surprising.

Up to now, opinion polls have suggested a two to one majority in favour of the treaty.


The poll for the Sunday Business Post says that among those entitled to vote, 35% are backing the Treaty, a fall of eight per cent since the last poll two months ago.

31% are opposed to Lisbon, an increase of seven points, while one third of voters, 34%, do not know.

Two leaked memos suggest that the Irish government and Brussels are going to great lengths to suppress bad news that might encourage a No vote - a result that would delight Eurosceptics everywhere, since if Ireland does not ratify the treaty it cannot come into force anywhere in Europe.

An internal email from a British diplomat in Dublin let slip that the commission's vice-president, Margot Wallström, had promised the Irish government to "tone down or delay messages that might be unhelpful".

The diplomat, Elizabeth Green, also said Ireland had decided to get the vote out of the way before France took over the EU leadership in July, to avoid "the risk of unhelpful developments during the French presidency" - noting that President Nicolas Sarkozy was "completely unpredictable".

The second memo, from Jo Leinen, the German chairman of the European Parliament's committee on constitutional affairs, warned that "politically sensitive" aspects of the treaty should not be discussed until it was in force.

AHERN RESIGNS: WILL IRELAND STILL HAVE A REFERENDUM?

Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern has announced he is to resign in May.

Mr Ahern, 56, has been taoiseach since June 1997 and has been a member of the Irish Parliament for 31 years.

The announcement comes a day after Mr Ahern began a court challenge to limit the work of a public inquiry probing planning corruption in the 1990s.

The tribunal is probing Mr Ahern's personal finances. Mr Ahern has been leader of Fianna Fáil since 1994 and heads the coalition government.

Mr Ahern told a news conference he would tender his resignation as both taoiseach and Fianna Fáil leader on 6 May.

Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern says the vote on the Lisbon Treaty will be held in the second week of June.

He told the Dail - the lower house of parliament - that a final decision on a date was still to be made.

"The government have more or less signed off on the date. It is really a question about the day of the week".

Ireland is the only member state planning a vote on the treaty which reforms the EU's institutions and replaces the ill-fated EU constitution.

In 2001, Irish voters created a problem for Brussels by rejecting the Nice Treaty although they approved it the following year.

A vote against the Lisbon Treaty would jeopardise efforts to bring it into force in January 2009 as it has to be ratified by all 27 member states.

I pray the Irish do what's right: defeat the treaty.

German schools are failing in educating students about the Holocaust, a new study by a political education center has found, as German youth, who one historian said use the word "Jew" as a common curse in daily discourse, are increasingly distant from the suffering of the victims of Nazism.

According to a study commissioned by the Federal Agency for Civic Education, a political education center known by its German acronym BPB, history courses no longer manage to teach Germany's younger generation of the horrors of the Nazis.

In the report, which appeared in the German educational magazine Focus-Shula, teachers are quoted as saying that they are having trouble impressing upon school children the horrors of the Holocaust, and have stated that their tools for teaching about the Shoah are not effective.

"The entire time we stood before the crematoriums of Auschwitz, the students took more interest in the types of pipes used to pump in the lethal Zyklon B gas, and not the fate of the Nazis victims," a teacher was quoted as saying.

In their words, this generation's students are less sensitive to the horrors of the Holocaust than any before.

The research also examines the role that immigrants have played in the changing attitudes towards the Shoah. Experts are quoted in the study as saying that there is a marked rise in the number of Muslims in Germany, many of whom see the teaching of the Holocaust as a veiled
endorsement of the policies of the state of Israel.

"Out of fear of the students' reactions, many of the teachers avoid teaching this chapter of history in order to not be viewed by some students as supporters of Israel."

"The word 'Jew' has turned into one of the most common curse words among students in both east and west Germany," said Gottfried Cosler, a Frankfurt-based Holocaust scholar.

The new EU treaty might not be ratified because "sensitive" countries such as Britain will pick over the detail of a text that many consider is too "close" to the rejected Constitution, the man in charge of the process has said.

Slovenia, which takes up the EU's rotating presidency on New Year's Day, is preparing itself for a torrid six months as most member states attempt to push the treaty through national parliaments before the summer.

Janez Jansa, Slovenia's prime minister, told The Daily Telegraph that a smooth ratification could not be taken for granted. "We cannot exclude the possibility that something will go wrong," he said.

The "sensitive cases" - Britain, France, the Netherlands and Ireland, which is required by its constitution to hold a referendum - are all expected to try to rush through ratification by the end of June 2008.

Mr Jansa said that after French and Dutch voters rejected the constitution in 2005, Europe's elites were using the parliamentary route rather than risky popular votes to ratify the accord.

They know that they would lose, and so they don;t want any member states to have one.

Only Ireland is going to have a referendum.

The rest of Europe will just be told it's a done deal.

The Lisbon Treaty reduces each nation's sovereignty over its own affairs and makes each nation - and the citizens of each nation - more subject to laws they have never voted on - and can't.

This is not democratic. It is tyrannical.

Germany's top security officials said Friday they consider the goals of the Church of Scientology to be in conflict with the principles of the nation's constitution and will seek to ban the organization.

The German government considers Scientology a commercial enterprise.

The interior ministers of the nation's 16 states plan to give the nation's domestic intelligence agency the task of preparing the necessary information to ban the organization, which has been under observation for a decade on allegations that it "threatens the peaceful democratic order" of the country.

... The ministers, as well as federal Interior Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble, "consider Scientology to be an organization that is not compatible with the constitution," said Berlin Interior Minister Ehrhart Koerting, who presided over the officials' two-day conference.

BBC: Euro MPs back stricter gun laws

The European Parliament has voted to tighten laws on obtaining and possessing firearms.

The age at which a firearm can be bought or owned will be raised to 18, unless it is for hunting or target shooting under adult supervision.

Blank-firing guns that could be converted will also be made illegal.

Earlier this month, a student shot dead eight people at a school in Finland, where gun ownership is among the highest in the world.

EU governments are expected to approve the reforms by the end of the year and the directive is due to come into force in January 2008.

Member states will then have two years to put the changes into practice.

UK'S FOREIGN SECRETARY WANTS TO ADD THE ME TO THE EU

AS RELIAPUNDIT BROUGHT TO MY ATTENTION LAST WEEK - AND HAD ME POST ON FRIDAY, AND AS HE REITERATED IN ANOTHER POST EARLIER TODAY:

Foreign Secretary David Miliband now wishes to extend the EU single market to cover north Africa and the Middle East.

What a plan. Tens of millions more Muslims could then move into Europe and Eurabia would be complete.

Bring on the Sharia. Chop the heads off all the gay people. Kill the apostates, and all those who would make fun of that friggin' Mohammed. Stone all the lying b*****s who cheat on their husbands.

That's what you invite in, when you invite tens of millions of Muslims to live in your countries.

You don't believe me, my multiculti friend? Well, the UK daily Telegraph says that 40% of Muslims would like Sharia law adopted in the UK.

And now, the UK's Foreign Minister wants to allow every Muslim in the Middle East and Africa to move in and have citizenship anywhere in Europe.

What do you think of that?

This is madness. One of the rules of the single market is complete freedom of movement of labour within it. So Mr Miliband’s plan would give millions of impoverished Asian and African Muslims the legal right to settle in Britain. Even the limpest of liberals would surely acknowledge that one thing the UK is not presently suffering from is an acute shortage of Muslim immigrants.

The Government’s latest proposed security measures are depressing developments which ministers justify by pointing to the growing threat of Islamist terrorism.

The Muslim communities already established in Britain have not integrated successfully. They are heavily dependent on benefits, hostile to freedom of expression, prone to political corruption and not accepting of equality for women. As well as fully-fledged terrorists, they contain many fundamentalists who wish to destroy our democracy by bringing Britain under a global Islamic caliphate.

Foreign Secretary David Miliband has said the Middle East peace process must get "back on track", after meeting his Israeli counterpart Tzipi Livni.

Mr Miliband's visit to Jerusalem comes ahead of a US conference to bring Israelis and Palestinians together.

He said there had been "six or seven years of very deep freeze" in the peace process and called for "compromises".

YES: "FREEZES" ... THERE HAVE BEEN FREEZES" ... PASSIVE TENSE.

NOT, "THERE HAS BEEN CONTINUED TERROR AGAINST ISRAEL"; NOT, "THERE HAS BEEN CONTINUED DENIAL OF ISRAEL'S RIGHT TO EXIST." JUST A "FREEZE."
