Democrats are on the verge of locking up several Senate races in the Northeast, including one in Connecticut that some analysts had considered a toss-up. But Republicans have gained ground overall in this week’s Senate forecast by virtue of improved polling in Nevada and West Virginia. Their odds of taking over the Senate on Nov. 2 have now improved to 24 percent — up from 22 percent last week and 15 percent three weeks ago, according to the FiveThirtyEight forecast model.

Eastern states, however — ordinarily solidly Democratic — were always something of the rainbow over the horizon for Republicans: states that might have been winnable if Democrats were to suffer losses of catastrophic proportions. According to Hassan Nasrallah, the group’s leader, Hezbollah has increased its missile stocks to 40,000, compared with 13,000 during the 2006 war; Israeli defense officials do not dispute the estimate. (In 2006, Hezbollah fired about 4,000 missiles.)

Hezbollah rejoined Lebanon’s coalition government in 2008 as a full partner with veto power, a position of responsibility that many analysts say should discourage any thoughts of provoking a second destructive war with Israel. NYTIMES: U.S. Apologizes as Attacks in Pakistan Continue

Dozens of tanker trucks carrying fuel to Afghanistan for NATO troops were torched near Quetta in western Pakistan on Wednesday, the third major attack on supplies since Pakistan closed a border crossing to Afghanistan a week ago and the first at the only checkpoint that remained open.

The latest sabotage came as American officials for the first time offered an explicit apology to Pakistan over a shooting that led to the closing of the other border crossing, possibly laying the ground work for its reopening.

At least one person was killed in the Quetta torchings after three carloads of gunmen fired at the tankers and then burned them, the police said.

“According to eyewitnesses and initial reports some terrorists came on vehicles a few minutes before morning prayer and started firing and then burned some of the tankers,” said Hamid Shakeel, the deputy inspector general of the Quetta police.

About 40 tanker trucks were at the terminal, and about half were saved from the attack, Inspector Shakeel said.

Firefighters struggled to contain the blaze. Live television showed the fire raging hours after the attack.

“We don’t have foam to put out the fire,” the police official said.

Hours after the attack on the trucks at Quetta, Taliban militants claimed responsibility, according to reports on Pakistani television channels.

In a sign that the government was continuing to distance itself from the attacks, the police chief in Quetta, Malik Muhammad Iqbal said it was not the responsibility of the government to provide security for the convoys. In the past few days, senior police officers have said the safety of the trucks lay with the fleet owners who had signed contracts with NATO.

The standoff between the government and NATO continued on Wednesday with no definitive word from Pakistan about when the border at Torkham in the Khyber region would be reopened.

That crossing was closed last week in protest over NATO helicopter strikes against a mountainous border post at Khurram manned by Pakistani paramilitary soldiers.

But in a sign of possible movement, NATO’s International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan said a joint assessment with Pakistan showed that NATO helicopter crews had shot at Pakistani border forces in the Sept. 30 strikes, thinking that they were responding to enemy fire.

The statement was notable in that Gen. David H. Petraeus, the top commander, said, “We deeply regret this tragic loss of life and will continue to work with the Pakistan military and government to ensure this doesn’t happen again.”

An even more explicit apology was offered by the United States ambassador to Pakistan, Anne W. Patterson. “We extend our deepest apology to Pakistan and the families of the Frontier scouts who were killed and injured” Ms. Patterson said. “Pakistan’s brave security forces are our allies in a war that threatens both Pakistan and the U.S.”

Useless Eaters? Study Says Neurotic People Cost Society $22K Per Year

A study looks into how expensive it is for society to take care of a certain type of person.

And, Reuters publishes the results.

And Yahoo deems the article as being worthy to post on it's front page.

NEW YORK (Reuters Life!) – Neurotic people aren't only making their own lives harder but they also cost society billions of dollars in health care spending and lost productivity every year, according to Dutch research.

Researchers from the VU University Medical Center in Amsterdam analyzed the cost of being neurotic and found while the least neurotic individuals cost society less than $3,000 per year, the most neurotic people cost more than $22,000 a year.

Neuroticism -- a proclivity toward worry, anxiety and emotional ups and downs -- is considered to be a personality trait with genetic roots, and is strongly associated with several types of mental illness, including depression, anxiety and schizophrenia.

"We thought that economic costs would be a good way to assess the overall impact of neuroticism," researcher Dr. Pim Cuijpers told Reuters Health. "We were surprised that the impact was this large."

The Nazis used to call this type of person a "Useless Eater". They are born, contribute nothing to society, and then die. The quintessential "Useless Eater" in the Nazi pantheon was the mentally retarded person. Nazis rounded up all the mentally retarded people, taking them from their families and their homes, and put them in special hospitals, "for their own good."

Eventually the Nazis killed all the mentally retarded people, reasoning they were a drag on the herd of mankind. People society would have to feed, who contribute nothing, and were, therefore, not worthy of being fed.

So, what are we supposed to do, kill neurotic people?

Or, are we supposed to just give them a pill to shut them up, so we can prop them up in a corner until they die and save the rest of us the trouble of having them around?

Sheesh.

The negative traits in the human personality are usually the flip side of very positive traits which benefit society. Let's take neurotic people, for instance. If a person is more likely to be anxious and sensitive, the person is also likely to recognize danger, pain, and anguish in other people and situations. Anxious people just may serve as the guard dogs of civilization.

Or, they may also be more likely to be able to express for us how pain and anguish, the human condition, integrates with joy and beauty, and comes together to make life more abundant, triumphant, and more worth living.

Many writers and artists are considered neurotic.

But, this study does not look into the benefits of neurotic people. It simply looks at the negative attributes, giving the impression that neurotic people are a burden on society, when they may, in fact, be some of the most important people in the grand scheme of things.

But, the larger question is, how are we to determine who is, and is not, a useful eater? Who is a benefit to society? Who is worth having around? And, where would that question lead us as a society, were it to be taken seriously?

Many right-of-center libertarians people (who consider themselves pro-choice, folks like Instapundit) felt that justice had been served by the Schiavo decision in which the State permitted the ex-husband to pull the plug on his ex-wife.

Abortion is a right to many of these folks and so is state-assisted spouse-a-cide posing as suicide.

I felt the Schiavo decision was a horrible decision, and that in the absence of clear instructions from the patient the state shouldn't intervene especially on the side of an ex-spouse and against the family of the patient - and on the side of death.

I wrote, at the time, that many death-row murderers routinely get more due process than did Terri's family.

NOW, LOOKING BACK: I think that what happened was a precursor of healthcare rationing AKA "Obamacare Death Panels". And I think that probably many of these right-of -center libertarian who are opposed to Obamacare, and "death panels" (or more accurately, the inevitable rationing that comes with state0controlled healthcare) is a major reason why.

In the context of Obamacare, these right-of-center libertarians have no problem accepting that health decisions - especially end-of-life ones - should be made by the patient and her/his doctor and NOT the State. They understand clearly that the state shouldn't intervene and that it inevitably will intervene when its paying the bill.

I think the right-of-center libertarians should rethink their Schiavo positions. (REMINDER: The State wasn't paying the bill for Terri; the insurance companies were.)

In the absence of clear instructions the state should err on the side of life.

And keeping the State dirty stinking paws outside these decisions is a major reason to oppose a state takeover of the healthcare industry.

Hundreds of "dangerous Islamists radicals" are suspected to be based around Europe, counter-terrorism officials from Europe have said, amid warnings of a potential Al-Qaida attack on the continent.

"The number of dangerous Islamists [in Germany] lies at more than 100," Konrad Freiberg, chairman of Germany's main police union, told the Passauer Neue Presse newspaper on Tuesday, adding that about 40 had explosives training. "This is very dangerous for us."

... The head of the BKA Federal Crime Office, Joerg Ziercke, told Tagespiegel newspaper on September 5 that he put the number of militants living in Germany at 400, some of whom had battle experience from Afghanistan.

Police had seen an increase "in travel and attempted travel from members of violence-prone Islamist circles" since 2009 and Germany classified 131 people "as potential instigators" who could carry out attacks "of a considerable magnitude", he said.

The U.S. State Department issued its warning on Sunday to American citizens to exercise caution while traveling in Europe, while Britain raised its terrorism threat level to "high" from "general" for its citizens traveling particularly in Germany and France. The developer behind the controversial Park51 Islamic cultural center has released the first official renderings of what the 16-story building will look like when built. The Islamic Center will have a sleek, modern design, and will be covered in hexagonal shapes that resemble a honeycomb.

However, as has been the case throughout the controversy surrounding the project, critics are finding other messages in the design plans. Conservative blogger Pam Geller, a leading foe of the project, has denounced the honeycomb design as a representation of "crashing Stars of David," and described the design plan as "diabolically audacious."

Other, less polemically-minded critics have interpreted the conceptual plans as a statement on the project's broader interfaith message. Ed Pilkington, a writer for the UK Guardian, contends the structure's Star of David echo is one among several design elements crafted consciously in "homage to other religions"; the overall effect of the drawings, he argues, is to render Park51 "decidedly upbeat and galmorous [sic] building, more festive than threatening." Meanwhile, a Park51 spokesman said through Twitter that the hexagons aren't intended as any sort of reference to the Star of David, but rather come from an Arabic architecture technique called Mashrabiya.

Now the Jewish star is not a Jewish star? More Islamic falsifying of any other religions.

Pastorius comment: I also want to point something else out. The other day, a reader was challenging me, commenting, "But Pastorius, all Islamic art, other than calligraphy, is geometric in design."

This is true.

Islamic art, according to Sharia law, may not be representational. Muslims may not draw pictures of human beings, birds, trees, mountains, or anything which is representative of any object in the real world.

So, almost by default, Islam has used geometric design as a platform and inspiration in its artwork.

Now, the problem with claiming that this Ground Zero Mosque design rests wholly within the tradition of the Islamic use of geometric form is this:

Islamic art is, in general, made of symmetrical geometric designs.

The Ground Zero Mosque design, on the other hand, is asymmetrical in nature. It is absolutely un-Islamic in it's aesthetic. It is purposefully Postmodern in style. It is chaotic by design, decadent, asymmetrical, anarchic and debauched in style.

Can anyone gaze at the design and see anything but calculated confusion?

The building looks like a building crumbling, because it is a tribute to two crumbling buildings.

Simple as that.

It is not a tribute to the world's religions. It is a tribute to the dissolution of the primary belief systems of the Judeo-Christian tradition.

And, of course, they threw in the Pentagons for good measure.

The Ground Zero Mosque design is a celebration of a culture in crisis. And, it is important to note, that when we speak of the design, we are speaking only of the facade. This building has a very noteworthy quirk as architecture. That is, it designed in such a way that it's facade is dominant. As it is, we see nothing of the structure underneath.


This is noteworthy, because it corresponds to the Imam Feisal Rauf's stated Mission to the United States. You see, The Imam Rauf's book was originally entitled "A Call To Prayer from the World Trade Center Rubble: Islamic Dawa in the Heart of America."

The facade of the building is meant to convey the same meaning as Rauf's book; Islam will rise out of the rubble of Western Culture. The facade will crumble away, and the reality of Islam will be left standing there for all to see.

This is the closest thing to a Trojan Horse gift the modern world has ever seen.

We would be fools to accept it.

And, since it takes a lot of water to produce paper, I think we ought to get the government involved in deciding which books are worthy for publication, and which aren't. Cuz, we don't want to waste water producing paper for books whose ideas aren't worthy.

And also, let's think about the idea that all this is precipitated (pun not intended) by the alarming fact that water is flowing into oceans (the horror). Does not ocean water evaporate, seeding clouds, and producing more rainfall, just as it has been doing for eons? 

I guess I'm going to have to help the scientists out a bit. 

Hey Scientists, here's how it goes: You talk, and spew tremendous amounts of hot, moist air. The air rises, getting caught in clouds (you know, kind of how dreams get caught in those Native American "dream catcher" thingies you buy at the New Age shops where you do your studying into the ways of Gaia). And, when the clouds get too much water caught in them, they become too heavy, and the water drops onto the Earth. And, then it flows down across the land, into rivers, and the rivers flow into the oceans. And then, the oceans evaporate, and the water rises up to the clouds, and gets caught in the clouds all over again.

That's just the way Gaia would want it.

GEERT WILDERS ON TRIAL

Holland's dhimmified court system are still out to get him:

AMSTERDAM — Dutch anti-Islam politician Geert Wilders appealed for freedom of expression Monday as he went on trial for alleged hate speech at a time when his popularity and influence in the Netherlands are near all-time highs.

Prosecutors say Wilders has incited hate against Muslims, pointing to a litany of quotes and remarks he has made in recent years. In one opinion piece he wrote "I've had enough of Islam in the Netherlands; let not one more Muslim immigrate," adding "I've had enough of the Quran in the Netherlands: Forbid that fascist book."

Wilders argues he has a right to freedom of speech and that his remarks were within the bounds of the law.

"I am a suspect here because I have expressed my opinion as a representative of the people," Wilders told judges at the start of the trial.

"Formally I'm on trial here today, but with me, the freedom of expression of many, many Dutch people is also being judged," he said, referring to more than 1.4 million voters who made his party the country's third-largest in June elections.

If convicted he could face up to a year in jail, though a fine would be more likely. He could keep his seat in parliament regardless of the outcome.

Whether Wilders could keep his seat in parliament, this is a very serious test for free speech against Islamofascism and jihadism in the Netherlands.

The trial was adjourned until Tuesday shortly after Wilders' opening remarks, when he declined to answer any questions from the three judges, invoking his right to remain silent.

Presiding judge Jan Moors said Wilders is known for making bold statements but avoiding discussions, and added that "it appears you're doing so again."

Wilders' lawyer, Bram Moszkowicz, said the remark showed Moors is biased against Wilders and moved to have him substituted. The move delayed the trial for at least a day as a separate panel considers the request.

The move to delay comes at a delicate moment in Dutch politics, when Wilders is close to seeing many of his policy goals realized.

Wilders' Freedom Party has agreed to support a new right-wing Dutch government set to take power with a tiny majority in parliament this month. The deal is not certain because several conservative lawmakers are hesitant to work with Wilders.

In return for Wilders' support, his political allies have promised to turn away more asylum-seekers and cut immigration from nonwestern countries in half.

They also plan to force new immigrants to pay for their own mandatory citizenship classes.

Those are some good ideas, I fully agree. It can serve as a lesson that even immigrants have to prove their worth by showing that not only can they actually work (to say nothing of uphold the law while in a workplace), but that they're willing to pay for tuitions.
