SCIENCE DAILY: New Way of Producing Electricity With Nanotubes Discovered

A team of scientists at MIT have discovered a previously unknown phenomenon that can cause powerful waves of energy to shoot through minuscule wires known as carbon nanotubes.

The phenomenon, described as thermopower waves, "opens up a new area of energy research, which is rare," says Michael Strano, MIT's Charles and Hilda Roddey Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering, who was the senior author of a paper describing the new findings that appeared in Nature Materials on March 7. The lead author was Wonjoon Choi, a doctoral student in mechanical engineering.

Like a collection of flotsam propelled along the surface by waves traveling across the ocean, it turns out that a thermal wave -- a moving pulse of heat -- traveling along a microscopic wire can drive electrons along, creating an electrical current.

... the system now puts out energy, in proportion to its weight, about 100 times greater than an equivalent weight of lithium-ion battery.

The amount of power released, he says, is much greater than that predicted by thermoelectric calculations. While many semiconductor materials can produce an electric potential when heated, through something called the Seebeck effect, that effect is very weak in carbon. "There's something else happening here," he says. "We call it electron entrainment since part of the current appears to scale with wave velocity."

The thermal wave, he explains, appears to be entraining the electrical charge carriers (either electrons or electron holes) just as an ocean wave can pick up and carry a collection of debris along the surface. This important property is responsible for the high power produced by the system, Strano says.

Because this is such a new discovery, he says, it's hard to predict yet exactly what the practical applications will be. But he suggests that one possible application would be in enabling new kinds of ultra-small electronic devices -- for example, a devices the size of grains of rice, perhaps a sensor or treatment device that could be injected into the body. Or it could lead to "environmental sensors that could be scattered like dust in the air," he says.

In theory, he says, such devices could maintain their power indefinitely until used, unlike batteries whose charge leaks away gradually as they sit unused. And while the individual nanowires are tiny, Strano suggests that they could be made in large arrays in order to supply significant amounts of power for larger devices.

NYTIMES: Officials Allow Sex Offender to Live Near School

A convicted sex offender has moved into a home across the street from Wildwood Elementary School in Piedmont, infuriating parents, who are asking school officials and the police why the 2006 state law mandating a minimum distance of 2,000 feet between schools and the residences of sex offenders is not being enforced.

But the Piedmont police, on the advice of county and state law enforcement officials, say there is nothing they can do.

... On Feb. 12, James F. Donnelly, 71, a convicted sex offender, registered his new address as 256 Wildwood Avenue, where a blue-hued house overlooks Piedmont, Oakland’s upscale, uphill neighbor.

TURKISH POLICE DENYING JEWISH COMMUNITY RELIGIOUS FREEDOM

YnetNews reports that in Turkey's continuing deterioration back to Islam, the authorities are interfering not only in the Jewish community's freedom, but in other communities' freedoms as well (H/T: Point of No Return):

Liberal Turkish newspaper Milliyet reported Sunday that religious leaders from various faiths convened in Istanbul about two-and-a-half weeks ago to discuss the status of the city's non-Muslim residents, including Jews.

The representatives claimed that the treatment of non-Muslims has deteriorated.

According to the newspaper, local authorities are forbidding non-Muslim communities from appointing a leader. Instead, the report said, authorities demand a sole representative for residents of all faiths, thus preventing the Jewish community in Istanbul from appointing a new chief rabbi.

Milliyet further reported that there is evidence of a growing trend in the city whereby Christian and Jewish schoolchildren are being separated from Muslim pupils.

And don't expect it to get any better. There's every chance that this is slowly careening towards disaster.

DNA TESTS CONFIRM LEMBA TRIBE IN ZIMBABWE ARE JEWS - AND MANY ARE KOHANE

HAARETZ: Report: DNA tests support Zimbabwe tribe's claim of Jewish roots

British scientists have succeeded in proving the Lemba tribe of Zimbabwe and South Africa descended from Jewish ancestors, according to a report by the BBC.

According to the report, the scientists conducted DNA tests on a large sample of the Lemba people, which confirmed Semitic origins dating back more than two millennia.

The BBC says that the 80,000 Lemba tribe members abstain from eating pork, wear yarmulke-like skull caps, conduct ritual animal slaughter, and even put a Star of David on their gravestones.

The report says the tribe has an oral tradition that links them to the ancient Jews. They also circumcise their male children, which is not a common practice in Zimbabwe, but is one of the basic principles of the Jewish faith.


Members of the priestly clan of the Lemba even have a genetic element also found among the Jewish priestly line - known as Cohen.

"This was amazing," Professor Tudor Parfitt from the University of London told the BBC. "It looks as if the Jewish priesthood continued in the West by people called Cohen, and in same way it was continued by the priestly clan of the Lemba," he added.

"They have a common ancestor who geneticists say lived about 3,000 years ago somewhere in north Arabia, which is the time of Moses and Aaron when the Jewish priesthood started," Parfitt told the BBC.

... The tribe even uses a religious artifact they say connects them to their Jewish ancestry - a replica of the Biblical Ark known as the ngoma lungundu, meaning "the drum that thunders," which they say was made by Moses.

The tribe's oral tradition says that centuries ago a small group of men began a long journey carrying the ngoma lungundu from Yemen to southern Africa.

The Ark went missing during the 1970s and was eventually rediscovered in Harare in 2007 by Professor Parfitt.

"Many people say that the story is far-fetched, but the oral traditions of the Lemba have been backed up by science," Parfitt said.

Al-Qaida's American-born spokesman on Sunday called on Muslims serving in the U.S. armed forces to emulate the Army major charged with killing 13 people in Fort Hood.

In a 25-minute video posted on militant Web sites, Adam Gadahn described Maj. Nidal Hasan as a pioneer who should serve as a role model for other Muslims, especially those serving Western militaries.

"Brother Nidal is the ideal role-model for every repentant Muslim in the armies of the unbelievers and apostate regimes," he said.

Gadahn, also known as Azzam al-Amriki, was dressed in white robes and wearing a white turban as he called for attacks on what he described as "high-value targets."

2 - We should stop buying anything from these nations. YES; ANYTHING -INCLUDING OIL. This means we have to build nuclear and coal power plants and wind farms etc. And it means we have to extract all the oil we can from ALL domestic sources. ALL - including ANWR.

This will give us a better deterrent with many of them - especially the state sponsors who have some degree of "plausible deniability". A Gothic inscription recently discovered hidden behind a monument at Salisbury Cathedral is now thought to date from the 15th Century.

The text was found in January when experts moved the Henry Hyde monument from the south aisle wall to clean it.
Archaeologist Tim Tatton-Brown said: "The basic questions of what exactly the words are and why it was written on the cathedral wall remain unanswered.
"It would be wonderful for us to solve the mystery."

The conservators' work on The Hyde Monument has now been completed, the monument has been put back on the wall and the text is once again hidden from view.

Finally, Toyota Fights Back - Disputes Electronic Systems Caused Acceleration Problems

[UPDATED: SCROLL DOWN!]

As I've stated here, I do not believe there is really any fundamental problem with the acceleration systems of Toyota vehicles.

I believe the attacks against the Toyota Motor Corporation are politically motivated. They are the work of journalists attempting to make a name for themselves. They are born out of, and given impetus, a general anti-Capitalist mindset amongst journalists, and institutions like the Los Angeles Times (who "broke" this story).

(In the interest of full disclosure, I know people on both sides of this issue. I have a relative who is on the Toyota design team, and an old friend of mine is among the team of journalists at the LA Times who are attacking Toyota.)

And, the cause has been taken up by the Obama Administration, because the Obama Administration, being the owner of Chrysler and GM would like nothing more than to take out it's competition.

In other words, the government, being in the business of Socialism, is now competing against American business. That's ok, in a sense. What Capitalist Pig Corporation doesn't want to take away market share from it's competition?

But, the problem is, the Obama Administration is using the threat of law by decree to attempt to begin the dismantlement of the most successful automotive corporation in the United States and the world.

Toyota has had to shut down factories, decrease production, and, essentially, concede market share to it's competition over a non-existent problem.The evidence that the problem is imagined lies in one very simple point; those who attack Toyota never give the solution to the problem, which is simple in an of itself:

PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL AND APPLY THE BRAKES.

If those writing the articles for the Los Angeles Times, and those in the Obama Administration, who are attacking Toyota, really cared about the human element here, they would be shouting the solution from the rooftops.

But, they are not.

NEW YORK – Toyota Motor Corp. plans Monday to try to undercut suggestions that its electronics systems caused the sudden acceleration problems that led to the recall of more than 8 million vehicles.

The automaker plans an event in which it will seek to debunk a critic who claims faulty gas pedals did not cause the sudden acceleration.

Toyota will aim to duplicate the scenario created by David W. Gilbert, a professor at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Gilbert told Congress on Feb. 23 that he was able to recreate sudden acceleration in a Toyota vehicle by manipulating its electronics.

The company is calling in the director of Stanford University's Center for Automotive Research to try to refute the claims. Toyota said Stanford professor Chris Gerdes will show that the malfunctions Gilbert produced "are completely unrealistic under real-world conditions and can easily be reproduced on a wide range of vehicles made by other manufacturers."

When I was 17 years of age - a newly-licensed driver - I had an incident happen which was terrifying. The motor-mounts on my 1969 Ford Fairlaine broke, suddenly, and the accelerator pedal fell out from underneath my foot.

I was making a left turn at the time, and I was headed towards a corner on which a Gas Station stood.

My car accelerated towards the gas pump, inexplicably (cuz, I had no idea what the hell was going on), as if it was demon-possessed. I jammed on the brakes, but that didn't stop the car, it just turned it into a squealing, screaming demon.

I was about three feet from the gas pump, when I had the presence of mind to put the car in neutral, and it stopped.

Well, what do you know? If a car is out of control, you can put it in neutral, apply the brake, and it will stop.

I was informed by my friend, Peyvand Khorsandi about a Stop the War meeting in the House of Commons tonight where Galloway was speaking.

We decided to go along and meet this stooge of dictators face to face.

While queuing to go through the security, we told the policeman who was directing the people to different queues that we were going to Committee Room 19. Two of the Stop the War enthusiasts heard us and cheerily said to us 'Oh we are going to the same meeting as well. Are you Palestenians?' To which we replied 'We like Palestinians but we are Iranians'.

The two women got even more excited and replied 'Oh we also support Iran against the West!'. They must have thought all Iranians support the regime in Iran.

When I replied 'So why don't you go and live in Iran and allow two Iranian women to come here in your place and enjoy the same privileges you enjoy in the West', their initial enthusiasm was quickly turned into a shock. What a disappointment for them to find out we were not in the same ilk as them.

... As we entered the committee room, no one tried to stop us but the stares and the whispers indicated that many were uncomfortable about our presence. I quickly scanned the room, full of 'useful idiots', SWP's John Rees and Lindsay German were there in the back, but I had managed to get a seat right next to Galloway himself. I was told to move because that chair was reserved for another speaker. Well that was the closest I got to the Supreme Leader I thought and happily obliged to move one chair away.

Press TV presenter and Respect MP, Galloway started the meeting and it wasn't long before he went on about UK police brutality during the Gaza protests in London!

... I shouted 'How can you go on about police brutality in this country when you work for a regime whose police beat up, kill and rape peaceful protesters?'. That was it. Peyvand started backing me up as well by asking him how he can go on about police brutality in UK but remain silent about all the crimes that are going in Iran? and guess what?

The same Galloway who was going on about UK police brutality had to ask the police not only to remove us from the room but he also insisted they detain us in the House of Commons police room until their meeting was over and they had left the building.

A study found that increasing the oxygen content in alcohol enabled people to process alcohol more rapidly and therefore avoid some of its negative effects.

Oxygen is used to process alcohol in the body and turn it into water and carbon dioxide.

By increasing dissolved oxygen concentrations in alcoholic drinks it is possible to help the body do the job, the study found.

Researchers carried out a series of tests with volunteers drinking beverages enriched with different amounts of oxygen.

Their blood-alcohol levels were then tested and it was found that alcohol was processed significantly quicker with drinks that had a higher oxygen content.

Professor Kwang-il Kwon, author of the study, said: "The oxygen-enriched alcohol beverage reduces plasma alcohol concentrations faster than a normal dissolved-oxygen alcohol beverage does.

"This could provide both clinical and real-life significance. The oxygen-enriched alcohol beverage would allow individuals to become sober faster, and reduce the side effects without a significant difference in alcohol's effects.

"Furthermore, the reduced time to a lower blood alcohol concentration may reduce alcohol-related accidents."

The United States government has committed to playing a role in indirect talks between Israel and the Palestinian Authority, and promised that if the talks were to fail, the U.S. will assign blame and take action, according to a document sent by the U.S. to the Palestinian Authority, which Haaretz obtained on Friday.

The U.S. government sent the document to the Palestinians responding to their inquires regarding the U.S. initiative to launch indirect talks between Israel and the Palestinians.

"We expect both parties to act seriously and in good faith. If one side, in our judgment, is not living up to our expectations, we will make our concerns clear and we will act accordingly to overcome that obstacle," it was written.

This commitment by the U.S. was a determining factor in the Palestinians' and the Arab League's decision to agree to the U.S. proposal on indirect talks.

The document also reveals that U.S. involvement will include "sharing messages between the parties and offering our own ideas and bridging proposals."

The U.S. also emphasized that their main concern is establishing a Palestinian state.

"Our core remains a viable, independent and sovereign Palestinian State with contiguous territory that ends the occupation that began in 1967," the document read.

NYTIMES: Muslim Group Says Police Detained 7 Praying Men

The nation's largest Muslim advocacy organization has filed a complaint with police in a Las Vegas suburb, saying seven Muslim men from southern California were detained and told they were acting suspiciously while praying in a shopping center parking lot.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations said Friday it filed the complaint this week against the Henderson Police Department because it did not understand what was suspicious about the men.

''Our main concern is the police department looking at praying and the way they looked as probable cause for investigating those men,'' said CAIR spokeswoman Munira Syeda. ''They did nothing illegal.''

... The group says the men, whom it identified as being of various ethnic backgrounds including Middle Eastern and south Asian, were performing one of five required Muslim daily prayers in the lot while stopped to buy gas and food Dec. 20 during a roadtrip.

As they returned to their car, they were stopped by three officers and kept for about 40 minutes while three officers checked their backgrounds and searched their car, Syeda said.

... A CAIR attorney said in a statement that the group was seeking discipline against the officers involved, changes to officer training and compensation for the emotional distress of the men.

''The scope and length of the stop was not reasonable under the circumstances, nor did it serve any legitimate investigative purpose,'' CAIR lawyer Ameena Qazi wrote in a letter to Henderson police.

Dubai Police Chief on Thursday said a Hamas member leaked travel information about Hamas leader Mahmoud al-Mabhouh into Israel’s Mossad spy agency. Al-Mabhouh was murdered on Jan.19 in Dubai.

Discovery, a First, Could Spur Exploration of Distant Mid-Ocean Ridge

Scientists at Columbia’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory have found evidence of hydrothermal vents on the seafloor near Antarctica, formerly a blank spot on the map for researchers wanting to learn more about seafloor formation and the bizarre life forms drawn to these extreme environments.

Hydrothermal vents spew volcanically heated seawater from the planet’s underwater mountain ranges—the vast mid-ocean ridge system, where lava erupts and new crust forms. Chemicals dissolved in those vents influence ocean chemistry and sustain a complex web of organisms, much as sunlight does on land. In recent decades more than 220 vents have been discovered worldwide, but so far no one has looked for them in the rough and frigid waters off Antarctica.

From her lab in Palisades, N.Y., geochemist Gisela Winckler recently took up the search. By analyzing thousands of oceanographic measurements, she and her Lamont colleagues pinpointed six spots on the remote Pacific Antarctic Ridge, about 2,000 miles from New Zealand, the closest inhabited country, and 1,000 miles from the west coast of Antarctica, where they think vents are likely to be found. The sites are described in a paper published THIS WEEK in the journal Geophysical Research Letters.

Australian researchers believe they may have solved one of the most pressing food supply problems of the 21st century by breeding canola containing the same omega 3 oils found in fish.

As genetic modification goes it is a simple marriage of oil-rich marine algae and the easily grown canola seed crop, but its implications for global aquaculture are immense.

Most farmed fish species such as salmon, barramundi and kingfish need to eat fish to contain the sort of long-chain fatty acids which make them essential for a healthy human diet.

Aquaculture is the fastest-growing protein production sector in the food industry and already accounts for half of the fish consumed globally. By 2050 an additional 70 million tonnes will be required at the same time as wild caught stocks are predicted to be in severe decline.

The so-called Omega 3 Project is part of the CSIRO's Food Futures Flagship, which aims to add up to $3 billion to Australia's agrifood sector through frontier technology such as plant science.

Team member James Petrie says the next phase of its work will be to replicate its success with canola in a large-scale on-farm trial.

"We've got proof of concept, so what that means is we have proven a canola plant or a flax plant - an oil plant - is actually capable of making these long-chain omega 3 oils in the seed and building them up to relatively good levels," he said.

"What we've got to do now is take it out of the lab and onto the farm."

Turkey Pulls Envoy After U.S. Vote on "Genocide" Label

A U.S. congressional panel voted on Thursday to label as "genocide" the World War One-era massacre of Armenians by Turkish forces, prompting Turkey to recall its ambassador from Washington.

The House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee voted 23-22 to approve the non-binding resolution, which calls on President Barack Obama to ensure U.S. policy formally refers to the killings as genocide.

The action cleared the way for the measure to be considered by the full House but it was unclear whether it would actually come to a vote there. The Obama administration and Turkey had pressed lawmakers to drop the matter.

The vote triggered an immediate condemnation from Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan, who recalled Turkey's ambassador to Washington for consultations. Erdogan said he worried the measure would harm Turkish-U.S. ties and efforts by Muslim Turkey and Christian Armenia to end a century of hostility.

The vote put Obama in a tight spot between his desire to maintain good relations with Turkey, a Muslim but secular democracy that plays a vital role for U.S. interests from Iran to Afghanistan to the Middle East.
