DENNIS KUCINICH AND THE FAIRNESS DOCTRINE

Hot Air has video of Dennis Kucinich on Hannity & Colmes stumping for a reinstatement of the Fairness Doctrine. What's shocking about this video is that Alan Colmes appears as the voice of reason.

Forget the ideological argument over the Fairness Doctrine for a moment. In response to Kucinich's argument that we need to give a voice to other viewpoints, Colmes made the brilliant point that under the Fairness Doctrine in the 80s, radio stations had to deal with so much bureaucratic red tape to convince the government they were in compliance that after a while they would just give up and stay clear of controversial viewpoints, or change to a music format. The Fairness Doctrine not only silences conservative voices, it can silence liberal voices as well.

GAZA & SINGAPORE: why is only one prosperous?
The Belmont Club describes the nascent Palestinian State this way:
Statesmen all over the world have paid homage to it. It's leadership has been praised and defended by Jimmy Carter. Charities have been established to support it. Fund raising in its name takes place every day. It has been provided with security training and weaponry by the International Community. If any country deserves to be called the proud creation of enlightened diplomacy and peacemaking, this is is it.
And then he points to Caroline Glick's thoughtful and heart-rending essay, "Welcome to Palestine." This is part of what she has to say:

And so it is that as statesmen and activists worldwide loudly proclaim their commitment to establishing the sovereign State of Palestine, they miss the fact that Palestine exists. And it is a nightmare.

In the State of Palestine 88 percent of the public feels insecure. Perhaps the other 12 percent are members of the multitude of regular and irregular militias. For in the State of Palestine the ratio of police/militiamen/men-under-arms to civilians is higher than in any other country on earth.

In the State of Palestine, two-year-olds are killed and no one cares. Children are woken up in the middle of the night and murdered in front of their parents. Worshipers in mosques are gunned down by terrorists who attend competing mosques. And no one cares. No international human rights groups publish reports calling for an end to the slaughter. No UN body condemns anyone or sends a fact-finding mission to investigate the murders.

In the State of Palestine, women are stripped naked and forced to march in the streets to humiliate their husbands. Ambulances are stopped on the way to hospitals and wounded are shot in cold blood. Terrorists enter operating rooms in hospitals and unplug patients from life-support machines.

In the State of Palestine, people are kidnapped from their homes in broad daylight and in front of the television cameras. This is the case because the kidnappers themselves are cameramen. Indeed, their commanders often run television stations. And because terror commanders run television stations in the State of Palestine, it should not be surprising that they bomb the competition's television stations.

Read.The.Whole.Thing.

Wretchard also links to a 2006 essay by Spengler, in the Asia Times, who argues that the Palestinian State has no possible economic basis, other than extortion:
No peace agreement ever will emerge between Israel and the Palestinians, I believe, because economics should have dispersed the Palestinian population more than half a century ago. Mechanization of agriculture, rather than Zionist political aims, began displacing the rural Arab population in the 1930s, I observed in another location. The Zionist agency bought farms from absentee landlords, displaced the fellaheen engaged in near-subsistence agriculture, and made the land profitable and productive. From an economic standpoint, that is, the Palestinians were Okies, but with no California to go to. This led to the 1936-39 Arab uprising against the British Mandate and Jewish settlement.

Rather than disperse gradually like other agrarian populations, the Palestinian Arabs became wards of the United Nations after the 1947-48 War of Independence. Their numbers surged because of better medical care and nutrition than they previously enjoyed as well as child subsidies. That is why the 700,000 Arabs who fled or were driven from Israel grew into the 4 million "refugees" registered with the UN in 2002. I place the term "refugees" in quotation marks because in no other case has the third generation following a population transfer retained official refugee status.

Despite the best intentions of Shimon Peres and the Israeli socialists, it seems delusional to imagine that any combination of light industry and tourism will provide a livelihood for a Palestine with 5 million inhabitants (including the non-refugee West Bank population). The Palestinian entity cannot exist without subsidies, and it cannot extract subsidies from the West or from the Muslim world without constituting a military threat. The existential choices for Palestinians come down to dispersal or perpetual war.
Spengler is always interesting, but I think he is wrong to think that the West Bank and Gaza are not capable of providing a living to millions of people.

In fact, I think that the territory of Gaza alone would make a handsome state if its inhabitants would pull up their socks and devote themselves to building it up. Let's just compare Gaza and Singapore, and see if that isn't the case.

When the predominantly Chinese population of Singapore seceded from the Malaysian Federation in 1963, many voices predicted that the tiny island nation would never make it. How could it?

But the Singaporeans showed that they could make it, becoming one of the great Asian economic tigers. The citizens of Gaza could do the same thing.

Let's use the data in the CIA's World Fact Book to make a comparison.

The land area of The Gaza Strip is 360 square kilometers; Singapore's land area is 683 square kilometers. So Singapore is bigger.

But the population of Singapore ( 4,492,150) is also bigger than the population of Gaza (1,428,757), so that the population density is similar. The median age in Singapore is 37, however, while the median age in Gaza is only 15. That does mean more children, who are less able to contribute economically.

Interestingly enough, the economies of Gaza and Singapore have similar overall structures. Singapore's economy is 34% industrial, and 66% service; Gaza's economy is 8% agricultural, 18% industrial, and 74% service.

Of course, Singapore's economy is larger, with a per capita income of $30,900, while Gaza's per capita income is only $1,500.

That's quite a difference. The unemployment rate in Gaza is 31%, ten times as high as in Singapore, and 80% of Gazans are in poverty.

The population of Singapore exhibits much more ethnic and cultural diversity ( Chinese 76.8%, Malay 13.9%, Indian 7.9%, other 1.4%) than the population of Gaza (Arab 99.4%), but both populations are literate: the literacy rate in Singapore is 92.5% (96.6% male, 88.6% female) whereas in Gaza, the literacy rate is 91.9% (96.3% male, 87.4% female),

And with 349,000 land lines and 1,095,000 cell phones, it seems that everyone in Gaza is connected. In Singapore, the numbers are equivalent, with 1,848,000 land lines and 4,385,000 cell phones.

The big difference seems to be that Singaporeans do not expect the rest of the world to support them, but actually do economic work.

But Gaza has enough population and enough resources to make an economic go of it - if they really wanted to. For example, the $15,000,000 worth of high-tech agricultural greenhouses that Bill Gates paid for, so that the Israelis who built them and ran them would leave them behind when they were expelled from Gaza, would have provided jobs and income -- if the Palestinians had not looted and trashed them as soon as they could.

Gaza also has Mediterranean beaches. With some investment and a lot of sweat equity, they could probably form the basis for a lovely and competitive resort. There are surely archaeological sites that could be developed as tourist attractions. Hotels and other tourist attractions would provide the cash flow needed to make investments in light industry, and a seaport might enable Gaza to serve as a transit hub for, among other things, oil that could be piped in from Arabia.

A desalination plant would enable a wide variety of agricultural businesses to thrive. High profit crops such as cut flowers and exotic fruits would surely be welcomed in the world market.

Light manufacturing might include clothing, books and magazines, electronics, and a wide variety of household goods.

And that's only Gaza. The resources of Judea and Samaria are much greater, particularly in terms of archaeological and historic sites that should be able to attract vast numbers of Christian tourists, in particular.

It is thus a great misfortune for the Arab people of the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, that the world has allowed gangsters and terrorists to declare themselves their leaders, spokesmen, and governors. That is what is keeping the Palestinians in poverty.

The Jordanian administration in the West Bank (1948-1967) allowed the economy to stagnate, and did not build a single university. During the pre-Oslo Israeli administration (1967-1990), the per capita income of the West Bank doubled and it was higher than per capita income in Jordan or Egypt (the West Bank had one of the fastest growing economies in the world) -- and several universities were founded.

With an honest, non-gangster, non-terrorist, non-jihadist administration, that would give up its cherished dream of massacring all the Jews in Israel, either the Gaza Strip alone or the Gaza Strip and the West Bank could become a thriving economy.

It's as simple as that.

GERMANY WANTS TO ARREST 13 CIA COUNTER-TERROR AGENTS

BBC: Germany issues CIA arrest orders
Germany has ordered the arrest of 13 suspected CIA agents over the alleged kidnapping of one of its citizens. Munich prosecutors confirmed that the warrants were linked to the case of Khaled al-Masri, a German national of Lebanese descent.

Mr Masri says he was seized in Macedonia, flown to a secret prison in Afghanistan and mistreated there. He says he was released in Albania five months later when the Americans realised they had the wrong man. Mr Masri says his case is an example of the US policy of "extraordinary rendition" - a practice whereby the US government flies foreign terror suspects to third countries without judicial process for interrogation or detention.
I betchya the Germans make an effort to convict our agents for crimes whose punishment will be worse than the one which they doled out to a CONVICTED 9/11 plotter -- he got all of 15 years for helping to murder 3000 people and doing a trillion dollars of damage.

Lookit: if they got the wrong man then he's entitled to damages - like anyone falsely arrested. BUT ARRESTING CIA AGENTS!?!?! Sheesh: these euroweenies hate us more than the enemy. Which is why they're all going to be muslims or dhimmis in the next 3o years... [ASIDE: it's like they wanna arrest 13 Jack Bauers!]

BBC: JANUARY 2007 IS THE WARMEST JANUARY SINCE JANUARY 1916

BBC:
This January is on course to be the second warmest in the UK since records began and the fifth warmest in central England for 350 years. The average UK-wide temperature so far for the month - which experts say is unlikely to change - is 5.9C (43F).

The average Central England Temperature (CET), which has been measured since 1658, is 7.1C (45F).

The Met Office began recording UK-wide weather in 1914, with the warmest January since that time coming in 1916. During that record month, the average temperature was 6.3C (43F).

The Met Office said temperatures had been pushed up by winds blowing warm air in from the west.
SO... ER UM... 1916 WAS WARMER???? AS WERE FOUR OTHER YEARS OUT OF THE LAST 350 - EVEN THOUGH THOSE YEARS THERE WERE NO SUV'S??? I DON'T GET IT IT??? IF THERE WAS LESS MAN-MADE CO2 IN THE ATMOSPHERE WAY BACK, THEN WHY WAS IT SO WARM IN 1916, OR EARLIER???? COULD IT BE MAYBE THAT FLUCTUATIONS OF AVERAGE TEMPERATURES IS NORMAL??? YA THINK???

THE HOMEGROWN AL QAEDA TERRORIST

In last week's issue of The New Yorker, there's a whole article about how Adam Gadahn became a homegrown terrorist and is NOW possibly one of the most respected member today of the al Qaeda:
Adam Gadahn, the first American to be charged with treason in more than fifty years, was born in Oregon, grew up in rural California, and converted to Islam at the age of seventeen. He is now twenty-eight. No one who knew him before his religious awakening ever thought that he would join Al Qaeda, and many people who knew him after he did are still perplexed.

And yet, in a short time, Gadahn has become one of Osama bin Laden’s senior operatives. (He is believed to be hiding in the North Waziristan region of Pakistan.) He is a member of Al Qaeda’s “media committee,” and his responsibilities are thought to include those of translator, video producer, and cultural interpreter. Primarily, though, Gadahn is a spokesperson, a role he performs with tremendous conviction. He has addressed the United States in five videos, most of which reach a wide audience on the Internet and, in some form or another, have been discussed on the evening news. Last year, shortly before the fifth anniversary of September 11th, Al Qaeda’s leadership featured Gadahn in a video titled “An Invitation to Islam.”

The video began with an introduction from Ayman al-Zawahiri, Al Qaeda’s main theoretician, who referred to Gadahn tenderly as a brother and as “a perceptive person who wants to lead his people out of darkness into the light.” Zawahiri implored his Western audience to listen to Gadahn, even to follow his example. Al Qaeda had never before given one of its members, let alone an American, an endorsement so intimate and direct.
And that's probably the single most scary part about him, that not only is he one of their most respected members, he's possibly one of their most devoted-to-Islam members as well. Read the whole thing to see what they have to report about him.

IS SAUDI ARABIA IN CAHOOTS WITH IRAN?
Terrorist funders and dictators with nuclear weapons seem to go hand in hand, don't they? And seeing the House of Saud and Iran working together on something is cause for concern:
Saudi Arabia's willingness to work with Iran likely indicates the growing alarm in the kingdom's leadership over the two simultaneous crises, which have inflamed Sunni-Shiite tensions throughout the Middle East.

At the same time, Saudi Arabia has given tepid support to a new American strategy in Iraq but has expressed skepticism over whether it will succeed. Besides sending 21,000 additional American troops to Iraq, the new strategy takes a tougher stance on Iran.
Daniel Freeman says that it looks like the Saudis lied when they said last week that they weren't mediating between American and Iran, and that the only deals they're really doing are with Iran as well. Here's a note on why Iran sees the Saudis as potential allies.

"God" an Obscenity?

The attacks on Christian expression never cease. Only the excuses vary:
A censored version of the film The Queen in which all references to God were taken out has been removed from Qantas flights. The Oscar-nominated film starring Helen Mirren, which had the word "God" removed, was being screened on Qantas long-haul flights until the mistake was picked up. "God" was bleeped out seven times during the film, which centres on the Queen's relationship with Tony Blair in the weeks after the death of Princess Diana.... The company said an overzealous young employee removed "God" after being asked to delete all swear words. Management claimed he failed to distinguish between the religious significance of the term and its use as a profanity.

ARLEN SPECTER--TRAITOR #2
I have been accused of being a rabid Bushie among other things for my loyalty to President George W. Bush. He has won my loyalty for his character, integrity, his Christian faith and for standing strong on the war on terror. Consequently, he doesn't usually get much criticism from me.

However, if pressed I do have a few gripes against him and Arlen Specter is one of my biggest. Why did W & Rick Santorum support Arlen Specter in the primary of 2004 over his conservative challenger Pat Toomey? It makes absolutely no sense to me. I have been fed a bunch of excuses but they still don't wash with me. The guy who led W's campaign in KC was someone who knew W from his Texas days. I asked him and he said "the devil you know is better than the one you don't know." That isn't good enough for me.

I think the thought is even though he's a social liberal he will be loyal because Bush supported him in the primary. One big problem, Specter seems to have forgotten that part of the deal. I have a list of Traitor Republicans and McCain is #1 but he is followed closely in the #2 spot by Arlen Specter with Chuck Hagel #3.

All of this leads up to Specter's latest stunt yesterday. I heard about it on the news and was just beside myself. Here is an excerpt of his comments:
A Senate Republican on Tuesday directly challenged President Bush's declaration that "I am the decision-maker" on issues of war.

"I would suggest respectfully to the president that he is not the sole decider," Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., said during a hearing on Congress' war powers amid an increasingly harsh debate over Iraq war policy. "The decider is a shared and joint responsibility," Specter said.

You've got to wonder if Bush isn't kicking Karl Rove or whoever it was that told him that Specter was the better bet.

WHO SAID THIS???
WHO SAID THIS:
"... we are enemies of today's capitalistic economic system for the exploitation of the economically weak, with its unfair salaries, with its unseemly evaluation of a human being according to wealth and property instead of responsibility and performance..."
Was it (a) Obama, (b) Hillary, (c) Jose Bove, (d) Segolene Royal, (e) Chavez, (f) Mugabe, (g) Kucinich, (h) Teddy Jo Kennedy, (i) John Francois Kerry, (j) Nancy Pelosi, (k) Charles Rangel, (l) Bernie Saunders, or (m) none of the above?

ANSWER: (m) none of the above. This socialist BS was spoken by Adolph Hitler. A National Socialist. More leftist BS from the socialist Hitler HERE. (WARNING: it reads like all leftist BS.) More HERE, too.

[NOTE: The fascio (an ancient Roman symbol) was used by our Founding Fathers to symbolize the fact that our nation was forged out of many states - one (nation) out of many (states). Mussolini coined the term fascism to connote how under his brand of socialism, individuals would have to submerge their individual will to the collective will - of course this "taking"by the state would be for "the common good."

Just exactly what Hillary and the other leftists of the Democrat Party say today.]

BARRY HUSSEIN OBAMA: WITHDRAW TROOPS FROM IRAQ ON MARCH 24, 2008 AT 9:23 AM

IHT:
Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama said that U.S. combat forces should be out of Iraq by spring 2008 ...
Okay ... he didn't specify the exact date and time - just the season and the month, but "3/08" is so effin' ARBITRARY he night as well have picked a date and a time out of his... er um HAT.

Or here's another idea: if he's so damn concerned about our troops - (and NOT their mission), then why not also withdraw troops from all the other places they've been for decades, like South Korea and Japan and Germany while he's at it?

Why is having troops in South Korea, ( a mature democracy we helped create and helped defend for the last FIVE decades), more important that having them in Iraq where they are defending a NASCENT democracy and killing thousands of jihadists who might otherwise be flying into buildings a few blocks from my home!?

I REALLY think that the doves of the Left who control the Democrat party are scum. I said this FOR MONTHS before the last election: that if they had the chance that they would do to the Iraqis what they did to the South Vietnamese and the Contras: ABANDON THEM TO TYRANNY. Well, that's just what's happening. Feingold and Hillary and Obama and Biden and the rest - ALL of the Dems save Joe Lieberman - ALL SCUM planning to cut off funds (or amend the AUMF) while we are in the middle of a damn war! They may or may not have the constitutional power to do so. But they sure as heck shouldn't do it. It will only help the enemy.

But maybe that's what really want, way deep down in their Leftist anti-American anti-Judeo Christian hearts? IS THAT TOO WACKY TO POST?!? Nope. If they REALLY believed in the USA then they would want to continue the fight to defend it - no matter the time or the costs. Like our troops do.

God Bless Our Troops. God scorn our enemies - foreign and domestic - and the ones in Congress.

ARE RUMORS OF CASTRO'S TELEVISION APPEARANCE GREATLY EXAGGERATED?
Fidel Castro is appearing on Cuban Television again. Could this mean he's dead? I know it sounds like a stupid question, but, from what I can glean from this article, just two days ago, Hugo Chavez was giving a seven hour speech in Venezuela. And, who else knew he was going to be in Cuba? And, if he is in Cuba, why can I find no other news reports to corroborate that he is? This article from just ten days ago, has Hugo Chavez saying that Castro is "battling for his life." Something doesn't smell right here. In fact, it smells a little like death.

Australia's Barrier Reef extinct in 20 years: Stupid Greenie claim
Odd that coral reefs have survived all the past warming episodes in Earth's history! Odd that coral thrives most in the WARMER waters of Northern Australia! The reef is thousands of miles long and stretches from barely warm waters in the South to very warm waters in the North. So it clearly can handle large temperature variations. Coral is mainly tropical. It LIKES warmth! What barefaced lies Greenies tell!

The Great Barrier Reef will become functionally extinct in less than 20 years if global warming continues at its current pace, a draft international report warns. A confidential draft of the report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), obtained by Melbourne's The Age newspaper, says that global warming will cause billions of dollars of damage to coastal areas, key ecosystems and the farming sector without massive greenhouse gas emission cuts.

In a chapter on Australia, the draft IPCC climate impacts report warns that coral bleaching in the Barrier Reef is likely to occur annually by 2030 because of warmer, more acidic seas.

Australian radio station 'vilified' Lebanese Muslims
Truth is no defense in the kangaroo courts ("Tribunals") that have sprung up in many countries to police political correctness:
Leading Sydney broadcaster 2GB was guilty of vilifying Lebanese people when presenter Brian Wilshire said they were inbred and had very low IQs, according to an investigation by the media watchdog.

The Australian Communications and Media Authority found yesterday that a 2005 broadcast on the top talk station was a breach of the Commercial Radio Code of Practice. Wilshire made his remarks in a talkback segment late at night just days after the Cronulla riots.
For some facts on the Muslim inbreeding problem in Australia, see here. See also here on Muslim IQ.

EDITORIAL CARTOONS BY DR. SEUSS
Not many people know that besides being a famous author of children's books Dr. Seuss also made editorial cartoons during World War II. There is a whole book with the collection of them entitled, Dr. Seuss Goes to War by Richard H. Minear. Simply put they are awesome and many of them apply to what we are facing today. Dr. Seuss was actually a Democrat but he was one back when Democrats still believed in national security.

My friend found the website that has them. It is a goldmine of great cartoons that would totally apply to the appeasers of today. Check it out! You can click on the different topics and see the cartoons he did for each subject. My only wish is that all the anti-war protesters from this past weekend could see these and be able to "get" how important it is not to appease the enemy.

LEFTIST ECO-NUTSIES ANNOUNCE THAT 1950 WAS ECOLOGICALLY PERFECT, AND DEMAND THAT WE MAKE THE EARTH EXACTLY LIKE IT WAS BACK THEN
Well, they really didn't say it in so many words, but it sure seems like they do feel that way to me.

The eco-nutsies think that back around then or thereabouts that there were the right number of hurricanes each year and the Earth had the right average global temperature and the right number of species and the right number of trees and the right amount of algae and the right amount of CO2 in the atmosphere, etc.

And they seem to argue that any deviation from that "normal" - or even "ideal" - is BAD BAD BAD AND WRONG WRONG AND WRONG AND UNNATURAL UNNATURAL UNNATURAL!

Like today's report in the BBC, that glaciers are melting faster now than lets say in the ... 1950's. SO!?!?!?! QUOTE:

"We will enter conditions which we have not seen in the past 10,000 years, and perhaps conditions which mankind has never experienced"

Sheesh: fuh-reekin glaciers once covered half the northern hemisphere!?!? Things change, and not all change is man-made, and not all is bad.

It is ludicrous to believe that nature can be static, or that homeostasis will always occur within our lifespans. Sometimes things may swing a little uncomfortably. We will just have to adapt.

The Earth is very old, and has gone through many phases with great swings in climate and speciations and extinctions. IT IS NATURAL. Get used to it.

Besides: if the great north and great southern poles get warm, it might very well represent a HUGE INCREASE in arable land and fish stocks. Not to mention be a boon to global shipping. IOW: It'll probably be GOOD thing. Warming phases in the past have been okay: that's when Vinland and Greenland were settled.

MY ADVICE TO ECO-NUTSIES ON CLIMATE CHANGE. Shaddup and get used to it.

AND DON'T THROW AWAY YOUR POLITICALLY INCORRECT FUR COATS...

WE JUST MIGHT BE HEADED FOR ANOTHER LITTLE ICE AGE! Here:
When most of us think about Ice Ages, we imagine a slow transition into a colder climate on long time scales. Indeed, studies of the past million years indicate a repeatable cycle of Earth’s climate going from warm periods (“interglacial”, as we are experiencing now) to glacial conditions.

The period of these shifts are related to changes in the tilt of Earth’s rotational axis (41,000 years), changes in the orientation of Earth’s elliptical orbit around the sun, called the “precession of the equinoxes” (23,000 years), and to changes in the shape (more round or less round) of the elliptical orbit (100,000 years). The theory that orbital shifts caused the waxing and waning of ice ages was first pointed out by James Croll in the 19th Century and developed more fully by Milutin Milankovitch in 1938.

... Evidence for abrupt climate change is readily apparent in ice cores taken from Greenland and Antarctica. One sees clear indications of long-term changes discussed above, with CO² and proxy temperature changes associated with the last ice age and its transition into our present interglacial period of warmth. But, in addition, there is a strong chaotic variation of properties with a quasi-period of around 1500 years. We say chaotic because these millennial shifts look like anything but regular oscillations. Rather, they look like rapid, decade-long transitions between cold and warm climates followed by long interludes in one of the two states.

The best known example of these events is the Younger Dryas cooling of about 12,000 years ago, named for arctic wildflower remains identified in northern European sediments. This event began and ended within a decade and for its 1000 year duration the North Atlantic region was about 5°C colder.

... Whether the pathway for propagation of climate change is atmospheric or oceanic, or whether changes in oceanic and terrestrial sequestration of carbon may globalize effects of climate change, as suspected for glacial/inter-glacial climate changes, are open questions. Yet we begin to approach how the paradox mentioned above can happen: Global warming can induce a colder climate for many of us.

... Our main message is not just that, however. It is that global climate is moving in a direction that makes abrupt climate change more probable, that these dynamics lie beyond the capability of many of the models used in IPCC reports, and the consequences of ignoring this may be large. For those of us living around the edge of the N. Atlantic Ocean, we may be planning for climate scenarios of global warming that are opposite to what might actually occur.
BOTTOM-LINE: Climate change is natural. Get used to it. More on global cooling HERE and HERE and HERE and HERE.

Free to Defame?
Does the 1st amendment protect the making of untrue defamatory statements? The issue arises from the oppressive actions of a California woman who does not like her neighbours:

"Lemen owns a cottage only feet from the restaurant and led a campaign to restrict it because she said it disrupted the neighborhood. Aric Toll, 41, a chef who bought the restaurant and bar with his parents, filed a defamation lawsuit against Lemen, saying she was ruining his business.

After a trial, a judge ordered Lemen to stop videotaping Toll's customers and barred her from telling anyone that the bar makes sex videos, dabbles in child pornography, distributes illegal drugs, encourages lesbian activities, has mafia links, is a whorehouse or sells tainted food — all false statements, the court said, that Lemen had made. She appealed the order before it could be enforced.

It looks like the case could end up before SCOTUS. I don't think any prior restriction on the woman's speech is warranted. An award against her of large monetary damages should see justice done. Once defamation is forbidden, saying negative things about politicians could end up in court so often that political free speech would effectively be ended.

Though even lawsuits by politicians seeking monetary damages for defamation can be used to have a chilling effect -- which is more or less what has already happened in Singapore. As long as truth is an absolute defence, however, that should be of no great concern. Many jurisdictions, however, require that truth alone is not a sufficient defence in defamation cases. The utterance sometimes also has to be of "public benefit".

Partly because of the 1st Amendment, defamation is much harder to prove in the USA than it is in Britain or Australia, for instance. Gutnick vs. Dow Jones is a case in point for Australia. Some comments from a lawyer about different jurisdictions here and a commentary on the current British situation here. I am an Australian and I like the Australian laws best, oddly enough.

SUICIDE BOMBER ATTACKS INSIDE ISRAEL
Thanks to Ehud Olmert's negligence and easing of security restrictions, now suicide bombings have returned, and this one reaching as far as Eilat:

A terrorist bomb rocked a shopping area in the Izidor neighborhood of Eilat Monday morning killing at least three. Palestinian terror organizations Al Aqsa Martyr's Brigade, an arm of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah organization, and Islamic Jihad have claimed joint responsibility for the attack.

Officials from the Eilat Police Department confirmed that a suicide bomber infiltrated the area and detonated explosives nearby a local bakery. Residents of the neighborhood reported a violent blast that shook the windows of nearby buildings. Many reported seeing smoke rising from the area of the attack.

[...] The bombing is reported to be the first suicide bombing in the Red Sea city of Eilat. The Israeli government has taken steps to elevate the alert level of the country. Today's attack is the first in many months and comes only weeks after Prime Minister Ehud Olmert eased travel restrictions and eliminated a number of security checkpoints to terror-riddled Judea and Samaria (West Bank) and the Gaza Strip.

As you can see, Olmert is responsible for this. When he's out of office, he won't be missed.

BOMB WOUNDS FIVE IN MOSQUE IN PAKISTAN
In Pakistan, where Sunnis are the majority, a bomb was detonated in a Shiite Mosque just people were gathering for services:

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) -- A bomb exploded inside a Shiite Muslim mosque Monday in the northwestern Pakistan city of Bannu, wounding five people, two seriously, police said. The bomb went off as people were arriving in the mosque for a gathering in connection with the Shiite mourning festival of Ashoura, said Sadullah Khan, a Bannu police officer. Dozens of people were inside the mosque as the blast happened, and two of the five wounded were in serious condition, Khan said.
Of course, we must blame Bush and Israel for this. Muslims wouldn't kill each other over ancient sectarian divisions, if they didn't hate Bush and the Jews so damned much. Right? YEAH RIGHT, SURE!

I worked my tail off volunteering for Jim Talent last year. So it was a big blow and loss for me when he lost to Claire McCaskill.

The night of the election I figured out how old I would be before we could even have a chance to vote her out. Even more frustrating than seeing Nancy Pelosi in the Speaker's chair the night of the SOTU was seeing Claire McCaskill in the audience.

She has already made several negative headlines including this one, Your cash ain't nothin' but trash.

The Federal Election Commission says Sen. Claire McCaskill’s campaign may have accepted “excessive and/or prohibited” donations from 19 people in the final weeks of the 2006 election.

Imagine that, and here I thought her and Nancy Pelosi were going to combat the "culture of corruption" in Washington. It is going to be a long six years.

BERNARD LEWIS: Muslims 'about to take over Europe'
JPOST:
Islam could soon be the dominant force in a Europe which, in the name of political correctness, has abdicated the battle for cultural and religious control, Prof. Bernard Lewis, the world-renowned Middle Eastern and Islamic scholar, said on Sunday.

The Muslims "seem to be about to take over Europe," Lewis said at a special briefing with the editorial staff of The Jerusalem Post. Asked what this meant for the continent's Jews, he responded, "The outlook for the Jewish communities of Europe is dim."

Soon, he warned, the only pertinent question regarding Europe's future would be, "Will it be an Islamized Europe or Europeanized Islam?" The growing sway of Islam in Europe was of particular concern given the rising support within the Islamic world for extremist and terrorist movements, said Lewis.

Lewis, whose numerous books include the recent What Went Wrong?: The Clash Between Islam and Modernity in the Middle East, and The Crisis of Islam: Holy War and Unholy Terror, would set no timetable for this drastic shift in Europe, instead focusing on the process, which he said would be assisted by "immigration and democracy." Instead of fighting the threat, he elaborated, Europeans had given up.

"Europeans are losing their own loyalties and their own self-confidence," he said. "They have no respect for their own culture." Europeans had "surrendered" on every issue with regard to Islam in a mood of "self-abasement," "political correctness" and "multi-culturalism," said Lewis, who was born in London to middle-class Jewish parents but has long lived in the United States.

The threat of extremist Islam goes far beyond Europe, Lewis stressed, turning to the potential impact of Iran going nuclear under its current regime.

TO SEE HER IN THE SUNLIGHT ...

One of my favorite authors of fiction was Harold Brodkey. Brodkey was known, primarily for his short stories which appeared with regularity in the pages of the New Yorker during the 50's-90's. Brodkey died of AIDS in 1996. He was married at the time of his death, but he had lived much of his life as a homosexual.

His writings have been called "Proustian" for their emphasis on the precise description of things which happened in the past. Like Proust, Brodkey wrote about the past by first lifting the veil of sentimentality which lays over our memories and peering at the cold-hard reality of events and the way they shape memory and our larger sensibility about life. His work is, thus, simultaneously analytical, heartbreaking and humorous.

Anyway, last night I ran across this passage in a short story called Innocence. Brodkey is describing a woman he knew when he was a young man. I love this. It definitely fits into the spirit of TAB:
Ora Perkins was a senior. Her looks were like a force that struck you. Truly, people on first meeting her involuntarily lifted their arms as if about to fend off the brightness of the apparition. She was a somewhat scrawny, tuliplike girl of middling height. To see her in the sunlight was to see Marxism die. I'm not the only one who said that. It was because seeing someone in actuality who had such a high immediate worth meant you had to decide whether such personal distinction had a right to exist or if she belonged to the state and ought to be shadowed in, reduced in scale, made lesser ...
This months Astute Bloggers Award for fiction goes to Harold Brodkey as far as I'm concerned. What do you guys think?

LEFTIST PROF SAYS 9/11 WAS NOTHING COMPARED TO SOVIET LOSSES

You've got to hand it to the extreme left. When they let it all hang out, they let it all hang out.

In today's Lost Angeles Fishwrap, Johns Hopkins Professor of French History David Avrom Bell opines that the atrocities of September Eleventh weren't really all that bad. He thinks we're over-reacting:
IMAGINE THAT on 9/11, six hours after the assault on the twin towers and the Pentagon, terrorists had carried out a second wave of attacks on the United States, taking an additional 3,000 lives. Imagine that six hours after that, there had been yet another wave. Now imagine that the attacks had continued, every six hours, for another four years, until nearly 20 million Americans were dead. This is roughly what the Soviet Union suffered during World War II, and contemplating these numbers may help put in perspective what the United States has so far experienced during the war against terrorism.
What's so beautiful about his opening paragraph, is that he reveals his hard-left background in the choice of his comparison.

If you wanted to compare the number of American casualties on September Eleventh to some other, far higher figure, it would be possible to choose the total American casualties in World War II, or the total United States and Confederate States casualties in the War Between the States, or any number of other conflicts.

But the real homeland of the hard left will forever be the "Soviet Union." Thus I surmise that Professor Bell developed in a hard-left milieu. How he must have loved writing "the Soviet Union." I wonder if the copy editors at the L.A. Times edited out his references to the "heroic sacrifices of the Soviet working class" in the "Great Patriotic War." Can't you hear the strains of the "Internationale" in the background? Or is it "Meadowlands?"

No, nothing the United States has suffered will ever match the christlike agony of the heroic Soviet commissars, and until the United States does suffer like the Soviets did, leftist professors like David Avrom Bell will have no sympathy with their own country and their own government.

What Professor Bell is suggesting is of course an idiot's program, anyway. The whole point of a vigorous and proactive defense strategy is not to wait until half the country is bled away by the Islamist murderers, but to act forcefully to eradicate the menace before it gets any worse than it is. As it is, America's failure to react forcefully to the kidnapping of our Embassy in Teheran in 1979, to the Iranian-Hezbollah attack on the Marine Barracks in Beirut in 1983, to the bombing of the World Trade Center in 1993, to the Iranian-Hezbollah bombing of the Khobar complex in Saudi Arabia in 1996, the bombings of our Embassies in Tanzania and Kenya in 1998, to the bombing of the USS Cole in 2000 -- our unwillingness to confront the escalating campaign of open warfare against us emboldened our enemies, and convinced them that they could get away with a mass-murder attack on American soil.

Now of course Professor Bell does recognize the seriousness of the threat that our enemies think they are making:
Certainly, if we look at nothing but our enemies' objectives, it is hard to see any indication of an overreaction. The people who attacked us in 2001 are indeed hate-filled fanatics who would like nothing better than to destroy this country. But desire is not the same thing as capacity, and although Islamist extremists can certainly do huge amounts of harm around the world, it is quite different to suggest that they can threaten the existence of the United States.
What Professor Bell does not realize is how "fourth generation warfare" has changed the rules in this new age of Islamist terror. Before the advent of true weapons of mass-destruction and the concentration of Western economic control in a few highly-networked centers, it would have been impossible to destroy the United States without a large mechanized army, a huge navy, and an air arm, and all of it backed by an eight-cylinders-pounding engine of an industrial economy. Nowadays, however, a few well-placed low-level thermonuclear weapons would deliver a devastating blow to the nation's economic capital, and the information infrastructure on which so much of our economic life depends.

More importantly, the hard left already wants us to surrender to the Islamist jihadists. Professor Bell thinks that you and I are over-reacting:
Yet a great many Americans, particularly on the right, have failed to make this distinction. For them, the "Islamo-fascist" enemy has inherited not just Adolf Hitler's implacable hatreds but his capacity to destroy. The conservative author Norman Podhoretz has gone so far as to say that we are fighting World War IV (No. III being the Cold War).
So what Professor Bell is saying, is don't kill the serpent that has just hatched from its egg. Let it grow. Let it kill tens of millions of innocent Americans. THEN he thinks we would be justified in all-out war against it.

Well, let me clue you, Professor Bell. The whole point of a credible defense strategy is to prevent that from happening. But of course, hard-leftists like Professor Bell want America to be defeated. They want America to be humbled. They want American power and influence to disappear.

Think I'm kidding? Professor Bell has another opinion piece on the web this week, published in the hard-left British Guardian. In it Professor Bell has this to say about how he thinks the "War on Terror" began with the over-reaching of the French Revolution in the Napoleonic period (I know the juxtaposition is bizarre, but early 19th century French history is his fach, so you can't blame him for dragging it in whenever he can. It makes it seem as if he knows what he's talking about.) This is what Professor Bell has to say:
Guided by these arguments, the leaders of revolutionary France willingly leapt into the abyss of total war. And ever since, western leaders from Bonaparte to Bush have found it all too easy to present wars of conquest as apocalyptic contests between civilization and darkness. Meanwhile, the earlier regime of restraints has proven difficult to resurrect. It is enough to make us ask if we are really quite as enlightened as we like to think, and if we might not have something to learn from the aristocratic warriors whom the philosophes derided as walking anachronisms.
Got that? He is arguing that the "War Against Terror" is a War of Conquest. The best that this historical cracked pot can come up with is warmed-over Marxist-Leninist claptrap, imperialism, and blood for oil. A war of conquest for oil? When Saddam was begging and scheming with the UN to sell as much oil as he could to anybody who would buy it, we had to go to war for oil? Only an over-educated Marxist-Leninist professor could believe such crap.

Oh, and it certainly isn't a war of civilization against darkness. No way.

For of course from the standpoint of a die-hard Marxist-Leninist (and you'll have to admit that any Marxist-Leninists who are still standing tall in the 21st century, after the abject failure of every Marxist "worker's paradise" on earth must be pretty die-hard) with an ingrained propensity to excuse the tens of millions of murders and tortures carried out by Lenin, Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, and the rest of that insane and criminal gang, the beheadings, stonings, mass-murder bombings, and mass-murder gassings of the Usama Bin Ladens, the Saddams, and the rest of that insane and criminal gang just don't seem like "darkness." For a hard-core leftist, that's just all in a day's work, because, as Walter Duranty used to say, you can't make an omelette without breaking a few eggs. UPDATE: complete round up at MEMORANDUM.

HUGE CONTRAST

TEN MYTHS OF THE IRAQ WAR
The Strategy Page has published "Top Ten Myths of the Iraq War." Both Glenn Reynolds and Austin Bay are recommending it. If you haven't seen it already, take a look:
1-No Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD).
Several hundred chemical weapons were found, and Saddam had all his WMD scientists and technicians ready. Just end the sanctions and add money, and the weapons would be back in production within a year. At the time of the invasion, all intelligence agencies, world-wide, believed Saddam still had a functioning WMD program.
3-Sanctions were working.
The sanctions worked for Saddam, not for Iraq. Saddam used the sanctions as an excuse to punish the Shia majority for their 1991 uprising, and help prevent a new one. The "Oil For Food" program was corrupted with the help of bribed UN officials, and mass media outlets that believed Iraqi propaganda. Saddam was waiting out the sanctions, and bribing France, Russia and China, with promises of oil contracts and debt repayments, to convince the UN to lift the sanctions.
7-Iraq Is In A State of Civil War.
Then so was Britain when the IRA was active, and so is Spain today because ETA is still active. Both IRA and ETA are terrorist organizations based on ethnic identity. India also has tribal separatist rebels who are quite active. That's not considered a civil war. This is all about partisans playing with labels for political ends, not accurately describing a terror campaign.
10- The War in Iraq is Lost.
By what measure? Saddam and his Baath party are out of power. There is a democratically elected government. Part of the Sunni Arab minority continues to support terror attacks, in an attempt to restore the Sunni Arab dictatorship. In response, extremist Shia Arabs formed vigilante death squads to expel all Sunni Arabs. Given the history of democracy in the Middle East, Iraq is working through its problems. Otherwise, one is to believe that the Arabs are incapable of democracy and only a tyrant like Saddam can make Iraqi "work." If democracy were easy, the Arab states would all have it. There are problems, and solutions have to be found and implemented. That takes time, but Americans have, since the 18th century, grown weary of wars after three years. If the war goes on longer, the politicians have to scramble to survive the bad press and opinion polls. Opposition politicians take advantage of the situation, but this has nothing to do with Iraq, and everything to do with local politics in the United States.
There's more. Read it all and then print it out and then give a copy to every moonbat you know.

EVIDENCE BY HALUTZ MIGHT LEAD TO OLMERT'S RESIGNATION
Well, we should hope it will. Here's the news on this from the London Times:
ISRAEL’S outgoing chief of staff is expected to give evidence to a commission of inquiry into the conduct of last summer’s Lebanese war that could seal the fate of Ehud Olmert, the embattled prime minister.

General Dan Halutz, 58, who resigned earlier this month, will spell out Olmert’s failure to outline the objectives of the war. Political analysts believe his testimony before the Winograd Commission may lead to Olmert’s resignation.
I'm interested in hearing what he has to say.

EXTREMIST MUSLIM ON EXTREMIST MUSLIM WAR IS A GOOD THING

BBC: No let-up as Gaza factions fight

Protesters in the Gaza Strip Gunmen from rival Palestinian factions are continuing to trade fire in the Gaza Strip as their deadly power struggle shows no sign of abating. Gunfire and exploding grenades could be heard in Gaza City early on Sunday. Fighting between the governing Hamas faction and its political rival, Fatah, has left at least 22 dead since Thursday, the worst violence in months. The clashes have halted attempts to hold talks on forming a Palestinian national unity government.
Similar sectarian strife is hurting Iraq's unity government, as is similar sectarian strife hurting Lebanon's unity government. SEE A FREAKIN' PATTERN HERE!? I think this pattern exists because the fundamental teachings of the koran are violent; in other words: Binladenism is NOT apostasy; as Irshad Manji has repeatedly said, jihadism is a belief in the LITERAL koran; it is NOT made-up out of whole cloth.

NOW... I would rather there be peace-loving unity governments in Gaza and Lebanon and Iraq, but if - and as long as - these extremist animals are killing each other... well that's JUST FINE by me. Let them all die.

And if Arabs or Muslims have a problem with this internecine warfare, then let them convene the OIC and Arab League and let THEM do something about it! And if they want our help - and the help of the West, then let's help them WITH CONDITIONS: they must end misogyny; honor-killings; polygamy, and intolerance of NON-MUSLIM faiths. Otherwise they can all just go to hell.

In addition, if and when the democratically elected government of Iraq wants us to leave, then they should just take a parliamentary vote and ask us to leave. WE WILL. Until then we should do whatever it takes to complete the mission successfully.

California Bans "Toxic" Dry-Cleaning Chemical
Don't you love that word "toxic" above? No mention that the stuff has NOT been shown to be harmful to humans, despite many attempts to do so. What DOES "toxic" mean in La la land? Apparently, all it means is "Greenies don't like it". I think there are better grounds for saying that the Greenies are toxic! HERE'S WHY:
By 2023, California will completely ban the most common chemical used by dry cleaners. Under the newly enacted ban, perchloroethylene is to be phased out starting next year. The state is still debating what the alternative will be. Dry cleaning businesses are upset.

The regulation by the California Air Resources Board begins to phase out the toxic chemical next year, banning dry cleaners from buying machines that rely on the solvent. State officials say the fluid causes a variety of cancers. The state's 3,400 dry cleaners who now use it must get rid of machines that are 15 years or older by July 2010. "That's the wave of the future -- nontoxic, non-smog forming," said Annette Kondo, spokeswoman for the Coalition for Clean Air, a California environmental group. "We think this is going to ripple down to other states across the country."

Environmental and health advocates embraced the new rule, though they had urged the air board to accelerate the ban because of the chemical's health effects as a potential carcinogen. The solvent has contaminated one in 10 wells in California. But cleaners say the ban threatens to drive some of them out of business because alternative methods are unproven and more costly. An estimated 70 percent of the state's dry cleaners use the solvent. "It could shut down some mom-and-pop operations _ the little guys that can't afford it," said Bob Blackburn, president of the California Cleaners Association.

The cost of converting could be significant for dry cleaners, 85 percent of which are small businesses with slim profit margins. Replacing a machine that uses perchloroethylene can cost between $41,500 and $175,000. The air board estimates that the additional expense of the new equipment will boost a customer's $15 bill between $1.20 to $1.60.

What alternative should be allowed in California is still under debate. Dry cleaners who switched to other systems sought to sway the board in favor of their preference. Although the air board did not endorse a substitute, the regulation would give cleaners a $10,000 incentive to buy a machine that uses a wet cleaning system, which use carbon dioxide. Environmentalists urged the board to ban the most common alternative, which uses hydrocarbons. Critics said it could lead to increased ozone pollution.

The board's vote follows similar action five years ago by the South Coast Air Quality Management District in Southern California. That agency became the first regulatory body in the country to ban perchloroethylene, forcing more than 2,000 dry cleaners to stop using the chemical by 2020. Last year, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency banned the chemical for dry cleaners located in residential buildings nationwide by 2020. But those operations are a small fraction of the nation's cleaners, said Jon Meijer, vice president of the International Fabricare Institute, an industry association based in Maryland.

California declared perchloroethylene a toxic chemical in 1991. State health officials told the air board Thursday that it can cause esophageal cancer, lymphoma, cervical and bladder cancer. The solvent, which has a strong, sweet odor, also can affect the central nervous system. Some business owners disputed those claims.

BACKSTABBING MCCAIN STRIKES AGAIN
McCain is at it again. He seems to be more than willing to strike another "Gang of 14" compromise. Here are some of the details:
The Republican senators urging " a deal" to allow the Democrats to get a vote on Biden without getting the 60 votes for cloture clearly do not believe General Petraeus or Secretary Gates or don't care about stopping an "encouragement to the enemy." Instead of demanding that republican senators not vote for cloture, John McCain is joining John Warner in seeking a "compromise" on this issue, Gang of 14 style, that will end up handing the Democrats what they want --a victory on the Biden resolution. If Mitch McConnell agrees to this deal, he will be signaling the GOP base that nothing --nothing-- has changed in D.C. when it comes to the Senate Republicans.

What part of "encouragement to the enemy" don't the Republican senators understand? [Umph added.] They can stop the Biden resolution, or at least do the public the service of illuminating which republicans are willing to join Democrats in providing that encouragement. There is no valid reason --none-- to agree to cloture.
More details:
Americans who are serious about the war cannot tolerate the Biden/Warner resolutions, and sense in John McCain's attempt to produce another "Gang of 14" deal not seriousness but opportunism. If Senator McConnell steps forward and simply declares these are not maneuvers worthy of a great country in a time of war, he will have the esteem and gratitude of those who are serious about the war. He and the other serious senators might lose --there might be 11 Republicans willing to expose themselves as defeatists who would join Democrats in voting for cloture on the Biden resolution.

But the Republican senators might actually wake up to the reality that the Republican Party supports victory in the war, and act accordingly. The GOP senators ought to fight their political battles with at least one-tenth the effort for victory as the hundreds of thousands of Americans have fought real battles in Iraq and Afghanistan.

BRITS FLY TO THIRD WORLD FOR LIFE-SAVING SURGERY

LONDON TIMES:
BRITISH doctors [said] he was too old to be treated on the National Health Service. But, at 72, he flew to Asia for a double-lung transplant and now claims to be the oldest man in Britain to have survived the operation. Joseph — not his real name — is one of a growing number of Britons who, frustrated with NHS waiting lists, are venturing into the murky world of organ brokers offering kidneys and livers harvested from the poorest quarters of the world, sometimes illicitly. ... He remains unsure where his new lungs came from. The Singapore surgeons told him only that they had been donated by the family of a much younger man who died from an unspecified head trauma.
This story reveals why socialized medicine is horrible. Of course, if the State pays for the healthcare and for the retirement benefits of its citizens it has a powerful DOUBLE INCENTIVE for NOT performing expensive LIFE-SAVING surgery: they save the money the surgery and rehab would have cost, and because the patient DIES, they don't have to pay out any more retirement benefits. EUTHANASIA IS A WIN-WIN FOR THE SATE. And socialized medicine and socialized retirement benefits creates all the incentive the state needs to carry out euthanasia - actively if not then by omission.

Obama and Hillary want to nationalize healthcare in the USA. We should be very VERY worried.

UPDATE: (via MVRWC):
DES MOINES, Iowa - Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton opened her quest for the White House Saturday stressing her potentially historic role as a woman - a tough woman at that, who will "deck" opponents, win the presidency and enact universal health care that eluded her as First Lady.
Lefties like Obama and Hillary will destroy this nation if we let them...

UPDATE#2: "MORE than half of people surveyed in Wales would turn to therapists such as faith healers rather than endure long NHS waiting lists, according to a poll out today."

If you put your faith in socialism then you might as well put your faith in faith-healers. [BTW: the graphic is from a BBC article posted in 2000 - and things have gotten WORSE since then! Does America really want to go that route!?!]

BARRY HUSSIEN OBAMA SMOKES; THEREFORE, EXPECT SMOKING TO MAKE A HUGE COMEBACK

Thanks to Bill Clinton, we've learned from the MSM/Driveby Media that lying is a good thing, as well as blowing your stack in an interview.

Now with the news that the second-coming of our Lord, Barack Obama, is a smoker, we can expect smoking to make a huge comeback and to be cool once again. James Lileks puts it in perspective: (Hat tip: QandO)
Obama is a smoker. Who knew? I like the way this story raises the issue – they’re concerned about the effect on his voice if he stops smoking, don’t you see. Hah! I’m waiting for the candid shot of Obama having a smoke – if he’s in a good suit, giving off that Rat Pack vibe, it’ll set the anti-smoking cause back ten years. It's he's wearing a fedora, which would add a jazzman / forties twist, I see a fifty-state sweep. Or maybe not. Given how cigarette smoking has become a moral issue, it’ll be interesting to see how this gets played. A humanizing frailty? A surprising character flaw? DID HE SMOKE AROUND CHILDREN? Doesn't matter; the more I look at this fellow, the more I see a fifty state sweep.
Heh.

Reliapundit adds: the nanny-state crowd - which hates Big Tobacco as much as they hate Big Oil and Big Pharma and Big Walmart - will give their favorite new stud a pass. Hypocrisy is okay, as far as the Left is concerned, as long as you blame industry and consumption for man-made global warming, support socialized healthcare, support raising taxes on the other guy behind the tree, and support subverting US foreign policy and US national security to the UN. (Hating the Second Amendment and not giving a damn about illegal immigration will also get you a pass.)

JOHN KERRY: DUPLICITOUS HYPOCRITICAL ANTI-AMERICAN SCUMBAG

KERRY IN DAVOS:
“When we walk away from global warming, Kyoto, when we are irresponsibly slow in moving toward AIDS in Africa, when we don’t advance and live up to our own rhetoric and standards, we set a terrible message of duplicity and hypocrisy,” Kerry said.
(1) Kerry voted AGAINST Kyoto.

(But perhaps that's when he was against it - before he was for it!?!?!?!)

(2) In his first six years in office, Bush has more than quadrupled AIDS relief to Africa - greatly surpassing what Clinton did in his 8 years in office. (MORE HERE.)

When Kerry talks about duplicity and hypocrisy he is PROJECTING his own sins, his own crimes. And he deliberately LIED today about these two matters (among many other LIES and DISTORTIONS he uttered) in a way INTENDED to diminish the respect foreigners might have for the USA. Kerry is actively encouraging others to hate the USA; he is promoting animosity by spreading vicious lies about Bush and US foreign policy. And his own record.

Kerry is a traitorous lying scumbag.
COMPLETE ROUND UP AT MEMEORANDUM. And if you have the stomach for it, then you can go HERE and probably read up on other rich left-wing scumbags who're overseas dissing the USA.!

HAMAS-FATAH VIOLENCE BLEEDS ON, AND SO DO THE CASUALTIES
Well, it figures that the bloodshed, once started, would not cease so easily, and it didn't. The civil war between Hamas and Fatah continues:
GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) - Gunmen armed with mortars and grenades fought in several areas of Gaza City on Saturday, killing two men on the third straight day of factional clashes linked to the power struggle over the Palestinian government. The deaths brought to 20 the number of Palestinians killed since late Thursday, and at least 66 people were wounded, medical officials said. The rival Hamas and Fatah movements traded angry accusations, and each held several supporters of the other side hostage.

The violence froze talks about bringing Fatah into the Hamas-led government, negotiators said. Fatah's leader, moderate Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, said he would go ahead with his plan to call early elections if the coalition negotiations fail to produce results within two to three weeks. The Gaza fighting, which started late Thursday, was among the deadliest in nearly two months.
I get the feeling that they won't have any new elections, and there weren't really any to begin with. And this is one of the bloodiest outbursts I've seen so far between them.

RIGHT VERSUS LEFT ON IRAQ, AFGHANISTAN AND THE GWOT: THE URGE TO SURGE VERSUS THE URGE TO DIRGE
MANY ON THE RIGHT FEAR THE SURGE WILL FAIL, BUT WANT IT TO SUCCEED. THE LEFT EXPECTS AND WANTS IT TO FAIL, AND THEY JUST WANT WITHDRAW THE TROOPS. SO, WHICH POSITION IS MORALLY SUPERIOR AND LOGICALLY SOUND?

GOLDBERG HAS THE ANSWERS:
"As I look at Iraq, I recall the words of former general and soon-to-be-President Dwight Eisenhower during the dark days of the Korean War, which had fallen into a bloody stalemate. 'When comes the end?' ... And as soon as he became president, he brought the Korean War to an end."

This was part of freshman Virginia Sen. Jim Webb's much ballyhooed stentorian Democratic response to President Bush's State of the Union address.

One wonders if the untold millions of North Koreans who've starved, bled, and died since then would similarly applaud Eisenhower's courage and wisdom. For more than half a century, North Korea has been a prison-camp society beyond the imagining of George Orwell, where public executions for stealing food are familiar events. The man-made famine of the 1990s alone claimed the lives of up to 1 million people (hard data from Stalinist regimes are difficult to come by).

One also wonders: When are our troops going to come home? Technically, the Korean War isn't really over. We're merely enjoying a ceasefire — much like the one we had with Iraq in the 1990s.

While Webb favors a "formula that will in short order allow our combat forces to leave Iraq," our forces in South Korea have been there for nearly six decades. Something tells me the antiwar base of the Democratic party doesn't have that sort of timetable in mind for Iraq.

So, except for the fact that the Korean War didn't end, our troops are still there, and the outcome has been the source of humanitarian and national-security nightmares, Webb's salute to Eisenhower's statesmanship really strikes home. [Umph added.]

In fairness, Webb is a thoughtful man who takes foreign affairs more seriously than most politicians. But his closest-weapon-to-hand style of attack against Bush does not reflect well on him or the Democratic party that chose him to be its representative.

But it is revealing. Indeed, the Democratic party's most honest moment Tuesday night came not in Webb's brusque words but in the Democrats' brusquer body language.

The president asserted that no one wants failure in Iraq. Understandably, the commander in chief wanted to avoid conceding how very real a possibility failure is, so he chose his rhetoric carefully. He spoke in the abstract about the bipartisan desire for victory and success.

And yet the Democrats for the most part sat on their hands, refusing to applaud, never mind rise in favor of such statements from a wartime president. Then, when the president mentioned ending genocide in Darfur, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her party leaped to their feet.

... None of this explains why Democrats are so eager to support continued U.S. fighting against the Taliban as part of NATO forces in Afghanistan, even though that puts us between two sides in what amounts to an Afghan civil war. But maybe Afghanistan is a humanitarian crisis too. Or maybe it's an excuse for Democrats to prove they are still tough as far as foreign policy.

Or maybe Democrats simply think the war in Iraq is lost, while there's still hope in Afghanistan ... assuming there's a principle in there somewhere.

... The 11th Commandment for liberals seems to be, "Thou shalt not intervene out of self-interest." Intervening in civil wars for humanitarian reasons is O.K., but meddling for national-security reasons is not.

This would explain why liberals supported interventions in civil wars in Yugoslavia and Somalia but think being in one in Iraq is the height of folly. If only Truman had called the Korean civil war a humanitarian crisis, Ike might not have called the whole thing off. ...

There seems to be only one hope for persuading the Democrats to support staying in Iraq. Let's just beat the rush and call Iraq a humanitarian crisis now. It surely is already. And if we leave prematurely, Iraq will undoubtedly give Darfur and Yugoslavia a run for their money as a humanitarian horror show. Why wait for calls to return to stop the bloodshed?
GOLDBERG CONTINUED/THE CORNER:
I'm actually quite sincere when I ask the following question: Does anybody — anybody — seriously think the effort in Afghanistan has more at stake for the war on terror than than the effort in Iraq?

I am in no way saying that Afghanistan isn't important. It's very important. But it seems so transparently obvious to me that Iraq is more important, that the downsides of failure are more grave, that the upside of success more rewarding, that I simply have a hard time believing anyone sincerely feels otherwise after seriously engaging the facts.

Moreover the moral concerns are so much greater, in terms of the humanitarian consequences of departure and America's obligation in Iraq.

The case could easily be made that we owe the Afghans nothing. We attacked their government after we were attacked by people given safe harbor and support on their soil. We did what we needed to do, and now we can leave. I don't agree with that argument, but it seems so much more compelling for Afghanistan than it does for Iraq, where we did launch a war of choice and therefore have a greater obligation to do right by the Iraqi people and to stay true to our democratic ideals.

This Democratic talking point about Afghanistan being the central front of the war on terror seems like such convenient b.s. I'm shocked they say it so glibly.

But maybe I'm wrong and there's a great argument I haven't heard.

I think Goldberg is effin' BRILLIANT. BOTTOM-LINE: The GWOT has many fronts, just like WW2 and WW3, (The Cold War). Some are fought openly, some clandestinely, some by proxies. The enemy has many factions - and they might kill each other at times, (witness Gaza or Baghdad), but against the West they are united: Afghanistan; Iraq; the Philippines; Thailand; Somalia - many fronts, ONE WAR. A war we must fight to WIN - ON ALL FRONTS.

[ASIDE: WHO ELSE SUPPORTS WEBB? CLICK HERE.]

NOTE: I've pasted several photos of the enemy in this post: an Egyptian, a Jordanian, a Saudi, an Afghani, an Iraqi and a man who was born in Cairo who claimed to be "Palestinian." ALL ENEMIES. ALL WORKING OFF THE SAME GAME-PLAN: JIHAD. We simply must fight them all...

STUPIDITY FROM THE SENATE
From this article in the January 26, 2007 Washington Times:
Senate Democrats quashed a proposal yesterday that would have dramatically increased civil fines on employers who hire illegal aliens. [...] Mr. Sessions' proposal came directly out of the employer-sanctions section of the immigration-reform bill approved with overwhelming Democratic support last year. It would raise the minimum fine on employers from $250 per hired alien to $5,000 per alien. And it would raise the maximum fine from $10,000 per alien to $40,000 per alien.

Though Democrats turned back Mr. Sessions' employer-sanctions amendment, they allowed through a second Sessions amendment aimed at federal government contractors who are caught hiring illegal aliens....
The article also contains this plum, evidencing politics in action, at the expense of the interests of our nation:
After accusing Republicans of stalling, Mr. Kennedy then proceeded to read aloud for five minutes a story in the New York Times about soldiers fighting in Iraq.

China Catches Pig Madness

FOX:
Companies looking to reach China's consumer market with pig images during Year of the Pig celebrations next month will have to adjust after a national television network adopted a policy to be sensitive to the country's small Muslim population, according to published reports. China Central Television said it would ban all verbal and visual pork references from advertisements during Lunar New Year celebrations next month.
Apparently Muslims are such delicate souls that they will self-combust just on seeing a picture of a pig! Jews too are forbidden from eating pigs but seem to have no problem with seeing pictures of them. Does that mean that Jews are stronger and wiser than Muslims? I think I had better not answer that!

GOOGLE REGRETS ALLOWING CENSORSHIP IN CHINA
Even though no blogger could live without Google it has been pretty apparent to conservatives that they seem to have a liberal bias. Go here, here and here. This bias extends to Youtube which Google owns.

Yet probably their biggest controversy by far was their announcement back in 2005 that they would be online in China but would allow there to be censorship. Amazingly the co-founders of Google are admitting that was probably a mistake. Here is an excerpt of some of their comments:
Asked whether he regretted the decision, Mr Brin admitted yesterday: "On a business level, that decision to censor... was a net negative."

The company has only once expressed any regret and never in as strong terms as yesterday. Mr Brin said the company had suffered because of the damage to its reputation in the US and Europe.

Last year in a speech in Washington Mr Brin admitted the company had been forced to compromise its principles to operate in China. At the time, he also hinted at a potential reversal of its stance in the country, saying "perhaps now the principled approach makes more sense."
It is amazing how once one loses money all of a sudden having some principles seems like a good idea.

Must not Abuse the English!
It had to happen. For centuries, lots of people (particularly the Scots and the Irish) spoke ill of the English. But Australians are apparently now not supposed to do so.

Two translations may be needed below. "Pom" is the common word for the English in Australia but it is only very faintly derogatory. Many of us are to this day British-born, after all. The other word is one common in both Australia and Britain but seems little-known in America: "whingeing" means whining, particularly the sort of whining an overtired baby or toddler does.

Compared with Americans, the English are much more likely to grumble about things rather than do something about it and in Australia they also sometimes compare various features of Australian life unfavourably with how it was back in England. Australians are mostly a happy and laid-back lot (we have reason to be) so they complain less and they find it amusing that Poms who criticize Australia choose to live here. So the term "Whingeing Pom" is widely used and will be rapidly applied to any Pom who DOES whinge. Now read on:

"It's OK to use the word "Pom", but not in connection with lots of references to whingeing. Radio advertisements for Tooheys New Super Cold beer featuring British men singing "Whinge whine bang-on gripe grumble" and "Slag whinge snivel cry 'Mummy"' to the tune of Land of Hope and Glory were banned yesterday by the advertising watchdog. The Advertising Standards Board, which said last month it was acceptable to use "Pom" in the same ad campaign, has now ruled it vilifies the English to associate Poms with too much whingeing.

The ban will be greeted by most Australians with mere amusement. (Above post crossposted from Tongue Tied.)

RUSS FEINGOLD: LET'S CUT FUNDING TO OUR TROOPS
Yes, the left supports the troops, don't they? Check this out:

Sen. Russ Feingold, (D-WI), has scheduled a hearing next Tuesday in his Judiciary Committee subcommittee to explore whether Congress has the authority to cut off funding for the U.S. military campaign in Iraq. The move comes as Congress prepares to vote on a congressional resolution opposing President Bush’s escalation of the war.

Feingold, a fierce war critic, will force Democrats to consider an option many consider politically suicidal: denying funds to the military and U.S. soldiers to force a quicker end to the war. Democratic leaders have privately called on members to restrain from cutting off funding and focus on congressional resolutions condemning the Bush policy. The resolutions are nonbinding and therefore symbolic.

If the lefties always want to use the Viet Nam analogy to explain what's going on in Iraq, then they need to follow it through the whole way. When we abandoned Viet Nam, at the behest of the Lefties in our Congress, it was a disaster. The North Vietnamese almost immediately invaded the South (in direct violation of the Paris Peace Treaty), and millions died in the region, and millions more were forced to flee their homes. The Boat people, REMEMBER? That is the kind of thing that will happen in Iraq if we cut off the funding of the war. And to top it off, Iraq will be established as an Iranian proxy. Just what the world needs, a more powerful Iran.

The Lefties in our Congress are insane.

MICHAEL MOORE: SEND MILLIONS OF TROOPS INTO IRAQ AND KILL EVERY SINGLE IRAQI
Yep, that's his plan. It's in his own words. Of course, he means it as satire, but I've always been under the impression that an attempt at humor has to be directed at something which actually exists in the real world, or it won't be funny.

And, since this is not funny, I propose we just take Michael Moore at his word, and conclude once and for all that he is a fascist loon:
[MOORE:] You have to send in MILLIONS of troops to Iraq, not thousands! The only way to lick this thing now is to flood Iraq with millions of us! I know that you’re out of combat-ready soldiers — so you have to look elsewhere! The only way you are going to beat a nation of 27 million — Iraq — is to send in at least 28 million! Here’s how it would work:

The first 27 million Americans go in and kill one Iraqi each. That will quickly take care of any insurgency. The other one million of us will stay and rebuild the country. Simple.

[CRITTENDEN:] Or, here's another idea. How about if Michael Moore rounds up the 25 million people who saw Farenheit 9/11 and takes them over to Iraq to serve as human shields? Michael Moore's girth ought to cover at least four Iraqis all by its immense self.
Crittenden is brilliant.

FUKUYAMA: POST MODERNISM IS KILLING THE WEST
FUKUYAMA:
Modern liberal societies have weak collective identities. Postmodern elites, especially in Europe, feel that they have evolved beyond identities defined by religion and nation. But if our societies cannot assert positive liberal values, they may be challenged by migrants who are more sure of who they are.
As we have been blogging for years. RTWT.

MODERN DAY DREYFUS CASE
Israel's president Moshe Katsav has taken a suspension of his position, something he himself requested, in order to deal with what appear to be trumped up charges that he committed rape upon as many as eight female employees on his staff at various times in past years. And it's sad to say, but I think this is indeed a modern day Dreyfus affair. Katsav's speech tells a few very important things here, including how attorney general Menny Mazuz double-crossed him:

A first in modern Israeli history: The President of Israel vehemently condemned official national organs, saying they cooperated in targeting him because of his "outsider" status. At times his voice broke, and at other times he was furious with rage, but he showed conviction and firmness throughout his 50-minute speech.

Though the President has claimed innocence ever since the allegations of sexual harassment against him first arose shortly before the summer war with Hizbullah, he has never publicly explained his side of the events. In tonight's dramatic speech, he went further than ever before in doing so. Particularly noteworthy was his scathing attack against the media, addressing many minutes of his remarks directly to the reporters sitting in front of him.

In addition, he essentially accused Attorney General Menachem Mazuz of lying and double-crossing him. Katzav said that at one point, he and Mazuz held a secret meeting, yet it and its contents were leaked to the media. The President said he called Mazuz to consult with him, and Mazuz said he would neither confirm nor deny the reports. Katzav followed suit, saying publicly that he would neither confirm nor deny - and the next day he heard Mazuz submit a public statement in the Knesset confirming the meeting and its leaked contents.

The headlines blared that the Attorney General contradicted the President's public statement. "He did the opposite of what he had told me on the phone the day before! What was I to do? ... I decided to continue to practice self-restraint and not embarrass Mazuz - but, I admit, it was not only for that reason; I continued to remain silent so that I would not be accused of interfering with the investigation."

You can view the video here too, and read his whole speech at the above link. Out of the whole speech, I think I should note this here, which he tells to the elitists:

I know what bothered you - that six years ago I was elected President [defeating Shimon Peres]. You wrote at the time that it was the end of Zionism, etc. I should be ashamed of myself? You should be ashamed of yourselves for writing such things about a democratic vote in the legislature!

Well, it has been speculated by some that Shimon Peres may have had something to do with the harrassment of Katsav, in revenge for defeating him in the election back in 2000. But then, as some people wonder, did Ehud Barak, as incompetent as he may be, cast his vote in favor of Katsav? Assuming that Peres has anything to do with this, why should he be taking out his anger on Katsav when he's not the one to blame for his "troubles"?

---At this point, a Channel Two news anchor interrupted, and Katzav responded furiously:

You have talked for six months, and now it's my turn! No, you won't talk here! If you don't like it, you can get out! I was silent for six months, and now you don't want to hear the truth! Channel Two - yes, Channel Two, the same station that has been spilling my blood for six months! The same Channel Two that set an interview with the President of Israel for a specific day, and then just a day before the interview, decided to cancel it - and why? Because it decided that Muhammad Dahlan was more important to them than the President of Israel - that's the same Channel Two that doesn’t like to hear the difficult things I am accusing them of now.

Channel Two is one of the most bottom-of-the-barrel TV stations in this country, and the slam upon them is richly deserved. They don't deserve an audience, and should be shunned by one and all. I don't watch much TV today anyway. Let that be a lesson there, if you will, about how badly political corruption gets out of hand here. I wouldn't be surprised if that's been the case in Europe too, in some cases. They've certainly come close.

TAKE A STAND
I don't normally do the petition thing anymore but in this case I think it is extremely important that we send spineless senators a message. In Punditarian's post he talked about Petraeus' great answers that he gave on the hill. Here is something else he said while there:
"No matter how well-intentioned, a resolution being opposed to this new strategy is a vote of no confidence in you. No matter how well-intentioned, the enemy will see it as a weakened resolve."
As Flopping Aces points out we expect this appeasement from the Democrats but click on this link to see how to contact all the Republican senators "who want to send the message to the enemy that we give up."

Also, if you agree with this statement:
"If the United States Senate passes a resolution, non-binding or otherwise, that criticizes the commitment of additional troops to Iraq that General Petraeus has asked for and that the president has pledged, and if the Senate does so after the testimony of General Petraeus on January 23 that such a resolution will be an encouragement to the enemy, I will not contribute to any Republican senator who voted for the resolution. Further, if any Republican senator who votes for such a resolution is a candidate for re-election in 2008, I will not contribute to the National Republican Senatorial Committee unless the Chairman of that Committee, Senator Ensign, commits in writing that none of the funds of the NRSC will go to support the re-election of any senator supporting the non-binding resolution."

US VERSUS THEM: THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS VERSUS THE HATRED OF HAPPINESS
JIHAD WATCH:
GLASOV: Qutb was an Islamic fanatic who was full of hatred. He was intoxicated by a death cult based on martyrdom through jihad.

Yes, Qutb obviously believed that we were “immoral” -- in the sense that any Muslim radical believes that anything non-Muslim is immoral. In his view, immorality was anything connected to humans pursuing earthly happiness and joy -- and anything that didn’t involve giving one’s life through jihad.

In terms of the U.S., Qutb was enraged when he saw people dancing at a church social in Colorado in the 1940s. And let’s just get a glimpse of the mindset here: the dancing there was nothing compared to the dancing of today. And whatever it is that one might think of the dancing today, one thing is for sure: no one of sound mind would have called the dancing at the church social in Colorado in 1940 as being “immoral” by any rational standard.

The bottom line is that Qutb was enraged that people were enjoying music and life, because the purpose of life was death through jihad. And this disposition was akin to the Leninist hatred of cheer on earth.
If someone wants to lead an ascetic life, I say fine. When they want to IMPOSE their asceticism on me I say, over my dead body. Amish people and Hasidic people live in among us (many in enclaves) according to a law they feel is higher than those we have written by mutual consent. THEY DO NOT SEEK TO IMPOSE THEIRS ON US; THEY DO NOT EVEN PROSELYTIZE. Islamo-nazis DO.

And Leftists do too, in their way - with all their nanny-state BS.

I say the Founding Fathers were right: we should each be free to pursue what makes us happy. The Declaration makes this clear: life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are the ultimate goals in life.

And I say that the Ten Commandments makes this VERY clear, too: After all, there are only these Ten things ya gotta watch out fer - a few you must do, and a bunch you cannot do - and EVERYTHING ELSE IS OKAY. (Jews have an additional 600 or so commandments - with NO additional privileges.) The ultimate UNIVERSAL human right is our right to pursue our own happiness. This pisses of the enemies of liberty. They wanna boss everyone else around.

"Live Free or Die" might means "Live Happy or Die - And Let Each Decide his own Happiness." The jihadists and the Leftists want to decide for you. We mustn't let them.

THREAT OF NUCLEAR ATTACK LOOMING
As you may have noticed AP is reporting that Georgian authorities and American agents have nabbed a would-be Uranium smuggler. This is bonafide EVIDENCE that there is a very real danger that al Qaeda could -or may already have - a dirty bomb or a small nuclear device. This is no time to back down from the task at hand - destroying Islamofacism. Any capitulation or accomodation will only lead to greater disaster further on.

AN UNHAPPY LIFE FOR WOMEN IN IRAQ
Rocco di Pippo of the Autonomist blog has been in Iraq recently, and reports that for women there, equality has still not been achieved:
In terms of material resources, Iraq is poised to take its place among the earth's most prosperous nations. But, as is case in Saudi Arabia, it will never happen until women in Iraq are treated equal to men. For a start, they should be treated better than dogs.

Iraq's society appears to be structured and dictated by oppressive, frightened men, many of whom use the Koran to justify the subjugation and destruction of women. Men whose false "respect" for women is rooted in total fear of them and their sexuality. Men who control and manipulate every single aspect of women's lives.

Where are the Western "progressive" women's groups when you need them? Why are most Western feminists and feminist groups silent when it comes to the terrible plight of Iraq's oppressed women? They have turned their backs on those who truly need liberating, preferring instead to slay "oppression" where it does not truly exist. They are cowards and liars.
For Iraq to truly become a democratic country, and for women there to gain full rights, that's why Islam will have to be rid of.

AMERICA NEEDS A JOHN HOWARD
In Australia, John Howard and some other government officials are taking a strong stand against the propaganda being spread in Islamic youth centers. According to this January 24, 2007 article:
The Australian government, whose leaders have invited Muslims who believe religious law should trump the nation's secular constitution to leave, now has launched an investigation into recordings of messages urging Muslims to kill enemies of Islam.

[...]

Prime Minister John Howard has said he believes activities of those in Australia's mosques should be monitored, citing a need for the government to know if members of the Islamic community supported or taught violence.

"We have a right to know whether there is, within any section of the Islamic community, a preaching of the virtues of terrorism, whether any comfort or harbour is given to terrorism within that community," Howard told Australian radio earlier.

WHAT PETRAEUS SAID

You have to give the man credit. The solons said they wanted answers. They asked the questions. He gave them the answers. As reported by "The Hill:"

In response to a question from McCain regarding the effect of such congressional resolutions on troops, Petraeus said, “It would not be a beneficial effect, sir.”

McCain supports sending additional U.S. troops to Iraq, and is at odds with Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.), another presidential hopeful and member of the Armed Services panel.

When Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.), a strong supporter of the Bush administration’s strategy for Iraq, later asked Petraeus whether the resolutions of disapproval would encourage the enemies in Iraq, the officer said: “That’s correct.”

This is a test of will,” he said, adding that as commander he would like “the enemy to feel that there is no hope.” He stressed, however, that he respects freedom of speech and the discussions taking place in Congress. (Umph added.)

You have to give it to The Man. He knows war. He knows leadership. And he is not afraid to tell the defeatist appeasers in the Senate that their efforts are propping up the enemy. If David Petraeus (Brooklyn native, USMA graduate, Princeton PhD, Ranger) fights as well as he talks, he just may be this war's Ulysses Grant.

SENATE FOREIGN RELATIONS COMMITTEE
As Reliapundit just mentioned the Democrats really don't want victory. They have too much riding on the fact that it will be good for their party for their own country to lose.

Eleven Democrats along with Traitor Chuck Hagel just passed a resolution in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee stating that they don't support Bush's new plan for the war. Here are some of Hagel's ridiculous comments:
"If you wanted a safe job, go sell shoes," said Hagel.
"This is a tough business. But is it any tougher, us having to take a tough vote, express ourselves and have the courage to step up on what we're asking our young men and women to do?"

Hagel is trying to make it seem like he is taking some noble stand. Give me a break! There is nothing tough or courageous about jumping on the politically correct bandwagon and appeasing the enemy by agreeing to cut and run!

BIRDS OF A FEATHER - PART 29: AL GORE AND BINLADEN. OR ECO-NUTSIES AND ISLAMO-NAZIS

YAHOO/"Reuters":
Global warming could exacerbate the world's rich-poor divide and help to radicalize populations and fan terrorism in the countries worst affected, security and climate experts said on Wednesday.

"We have to reckon with the human propensity for violence," Sir Crispin Tickell, Britain's former ambassador to the United Nations, told a London conference on "Climate Change: the Global Security Impact."

"Violence within and between communities and between nation states, we must accept, could possibly increase, because the precedents are all around." He cited Rwanda and Sudan's Darfur region as two examples where drought and overpopulation, relative to scarce resources, had helped to fuel deadly conflicts.

Experts at the conference hosted by the Royal United Services Institute said it was likely that global warming would create huge flows of refugees as people tried to escape areas swamped by rising sea levels or rendered uninhabitable by desertification.

Tickell said terrorists were likely to seek to exploit the tensions created.

"Those who are short of food, those who are short of water, those who can't move to countries where it looks as if everything is marvelous are going to be people who are going to adopt desperate measures to try and make their point."

BIN LADEN ON CLIMATE CHANGE

John Mitchell, chief scientist at Britain's Met Office, noted al Qaeda had already listed environmental damage among its litany of grievances against the United States.

"You have destroyed nature with your industrial waste and gases more than any other nation in history. Despite this, you refuse to sign the Kyoto agreement so that you can secure the profit of your greedy companies and industries," al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden wrote in a 2002 "letter to the American people."
He makes no mention of the fact that Darfur and d Sudan are on-going islamo-wars. As are nearly all the wars in the world today.

FACT: Globally, there have been more than 7000 jihadoterrorist attacks SINCE 9/11. None have anything to do with climate change, or poverty.

Convergence between the Left/eco-nutsies and jihadism is not novel. It is a NATURAL ALLIANCE. WHY?! Simple: the basic affinity that the Left has with the jihadism is based on the fact that both are opposed to modernity, and both revile traditional Judeo-Christian/Western Civilization.

Both the post modern Left and the jihadists see the J-C West as bad; (the relativist Left even seemingly makes an exception to their relativism in order to assert that the J-C West is truly and absolutely bad). Typical of this anti-Judeo-Christian West attitude is the fact that so many on the Left either equate Christian fundamentalists with jihadoterrorists and/or fear Bush and Falwell more than Binalden and Zawahiri. The post modern Left blames the J-C West for the what they feel are the worst acts in all of human history: Third World poverty, most of humanity's genocide, and global warming.

Each if the charges the Left levels at the J-C West are demonstrably false. (Even if one believes that global warming is caused by man, the emerging Third World nations of China and India are just as "guilty" of creating atmospheric CO2 as is the USA and the West, but the Left and Kyoto gives them a free ride and ZERO criticism. This proves that it's more about being anti-USA/J-C West than anyhting else.) Additionally, the Third World committed more genocide than the West, And their poverty was not caused by the West.

The jihadists blame the West for the sad state of affairs inside the former Caliphate.

The Leftists and jihadists are united in their hatred of the J-C West, and the since the USA is the defender of the J-C West they hate the USA. (FURTHER PROOF OF THIS CONVERGENCE: The recent attack on the USA embassy in Greece was done by Leftists acting on behalf of Muslims.)

Like the jiahdoterrorists, the post modern Left wants to destroy the J-C West by bringing down the USA - only the Left wants to accomplish this through their Gramscian agenda (which we have posted on extensively at TAB). OF COURSE: they are willing to appease the jihadists if this will HURT the USA an the West; chastise the West, if you prefer.

The jihadists want the West to become dhimmis and withdraw from all lands which were ever muslim. And they will do anything within their means to accomplish this: including starting a nuclear holocaust.

The Left is the enemy within, and - because they are also a Fifth Column of the jihadist enemy - until we defeat them, we will not be able to defeat the jihadists abroad. This is a big challenge, because the MSM and the academy and a few key bureaucracies (CIA, FBI, State) are dominated by the post modern Left. Defeating the Left is even tougher in Europe where the post modern Left is even more entrenched in the MSM, the academy andf the bureaucracies; (SEE: BRUCE BAWER).

Basically, the USA Left has been anti-USA since Truman broke with Stalin. The Left supported the USA during WW2 ONLY because FDR was allied with Stalin. The Left has opposed the USA in every war since WW2. Iraq is just another in a long line of wars the Left wanted us to lose: Korea; the Bay of Pigs; Vietnam; Nicaragua; Grenada, the Gulf War; Panama; and Iraq. (Many also opposed the Afghan War - arguing it was about gas or oil or the deliberate starvation of Afghanis.)

WHERE DOES THAT LEAVE US? Well, about 30% of the USA public are OK - hawkish and pro-West and positive about Judeo-Christian civilization. About 30% are Leftie secular doves - Gramscian or their dupes. And about 15% are unreachable apathetic people who basically don't give a damn about politics or history. And then there's the indecisive 15% - "FREE-REANGERS". These folks blow with the wind: when the news from Iraq is bad, then they oppose the war.

In addition to attacking the jihadists with everything we've got, in addition to attacking the post modern Left with everything we've got, we have to do whatever we can to reach THIS last group. But without an objective MASS MEDIA it's a very VERY tough problem. WHY?! Well this 15% are the folks who get their news and take their cues from the MSM's TV news, which takes its cues from the Gramscian NYTIMES.

Fox cable has helped, but the cable audience is 1/20th the size of the broadcast audience and there's still not enough convergence between Fox and news-talk radio and blogs and podcasts to make up this distance. If we're ever going to liberate this 15% from the stranglehold of an MSM dominated by the post modern Left, then we're gonna have to create synergies between these three mediums to reach the masses and to undercut the Leftist lies and propaganda of the MSM.

[BTW: The polices which the Left advocates on behalf of the impoverished Third World are ALL BAD. If we really want to cure Third World poverty then we need to help INDUSTRIALIZE the Third World and get them to introduce more free market capitalism and more globalization. It's what works. The policies which the Left advocates DO NOT. Only when China and India gave up on Leftist economics and began to thrive.]

DEMOCRATS REALLY DON'T WANT VICTORY
SALON:
"Why Democrats can stop the war"
"STOP" not win.

KERRY:
"Above all else, the mission we must all join is to end the war in Iraq."
"END" not win.

GOLDBERG/NRO:
... the Dems would not stand up en masse was when Bush said we should pursue victory:
This is not the fight we entered in Iraq, but it is the fight we are in. Every one of us wishes that this war were over and won. Yet it would not be like us to leave our promises unkept, our friends abandoned, and our own security at risk. Ladies and gentlemen: On this day, at this hour, it is still within our power to shape the outcome of this battle. So let us find our resolve, and turn events toward victory.
The Dems don't want to win, and they do not care about the consequences, either.

ISLAM: "THE RELIGION OF BURNING TIRES"

<---HERE IS WHAT ISLAM SPAWNED IN LEBANON YESTERDAY.

<---HERE'S A PHOTO OF WHAT ISLAM DID IN SRINAGAR IN OCTOBER.

<--- HERE'S A PHOTO OF WHAT THEY DID IN THE HIZBALLAH-ISRAEL WAR. (YUP: THOSE'RE BURNING TIRES IN THE BACKGROUND!)

AO... WHAT'VE WE GOT HERE? CARTOON RIOTS, TRIBAL WARS, BEHEADINGS, MOSQUE'S TARGETED BY SUICIDE-BOMBERS, AND MOUNTAINS OF BURNING TIRES...

ER, UM... WHAT KIND OF RELIGION IS THIS AGAIN, "A RELIGION OF PEACE?!?" MY ASS IT IS. AT BEST, IT IS "THE RELIGION OF BURNING TIRES." AT BEST.

AND REMEMBER: ALL THIS STUFF IS DONE BY THOSE WHO CLAIM TO BE THE MOST DEVOUT, LIKE HIZBALLAH. AND THEY DO ALL THIS IN THE NAME OF THEIR RELIGION, THEIR GOD. It's a religion of schizo serial murderers if you ask me!

BTW: Did you know they trucked in tires to burn!? SHEESH: these animals're so freakin weird! There will be no peace in Lebanon or Kashmir or the Philippines or Thailand or Gaza or Iraq until the islamo-nutsie militias - like Hizballah and the al Sadr's Mahdi Army, and J-I - are WIPED OUT. And the sooner the better.

US MILITARY READY TO SET PHASERS TO STUN
FOX:
The military calls its new weapon an "active denial system," but that's an understatement. It's a ray gun that shoots a beam that makes people feel as if they are about to catch fire. Apart from causing that terrifying sensation, the technology is supposed to be harmless — a non-lethal way to get enemies to drop their weapons.

[Hat-tip to Pim's Ghost]

ON ABC NEWS
I didn't see the broadcast, but according to this report,
WASHINGTON, Jan. 22, 2007 — - Mimicking the hijackers who executed the Sept. 11 attacks, insurgents reportedly tied to al Qaeda in Iraq considered using student visas to slip terrorists into the United States to orchestrate a new attack on American soil....

"This appears to be the first hard evidence al Qaeda in Iraq was trying to attack us here at home," said ABC News consultant Richard Clarke, former chief counterterrorism adviser on the U.S. National Security Council....

"Anyone willing to go to Iraq to fight American troops is probably willing to try to come to the United States," Clarke said.
Fight them there so that we don't have to fight them here.

PC HYSTERIA: Texas Mayor Singles Out N-Word for Ban
We read:
"It's one of the most reviled words in the English language, but if one Texas mayor gets his way, getting caught uttering the "N-word" will hit offenders where it hurts. Mayor Ken Corley of Brazoria, Texas, has proposed a city ordinance that would make using the word in an offensive fashion a crime equal to disturbing the peace and punishable by a fine of up to $500. But legal experts said it's unlikely the law will stand up to the First Amendment....

Under the proposed Brazoria ordinance, users of the N-word would be fined only if a complaint were filed against them, thus protecting those who think they are using the word as a term of endearment.

Source
A number of comments:

1). "most reviled words in the English language". Reviled in the current U.S. climate of PC hysteria would be more accurate. We DO speak English in Australia but the High Court of Australia recently ruled that the word is not offensive at all in Australia.

2). The loophole that you can avoid penalty by claiming that you used the word affectionately is fun. Can whites use that defence? And if whites are disbelieved while blacks ARE believed, is that racism? And what if a black uses the word abusively? How do you prove that? Or don't you try? And is THAT racism?

3). Why ban just one "reviled" word? What about the c-word, the f-word etc. Is not singling out just one racial word racism? And too bad there's nothing about calling a white man a "cracka", eh?

4). Anybody using the word in writing would be smart to spell it with a single "g", as "niger" is simply the Latin word for black and even Brazoria, Texas, is unlikely to ban Latin.

5). I occasionally refer to people of sub-Saharan African ancestry as "negroes" but I believe that that word is "offensive" too in America. Should that word be banned too? It IS, however, the scientific term -- though Leftists would say that there is NO scientific term for people of African ancestry. But I wonder how people of African ancestry can be given special preferences ("affirmative action") if they cannot be scientifically described?

THE STATE OF THE UNION, AL QAEDA AND DHIMMICRATS
The recent threats coming from al zawahiri may be evidence of a very real and imminent danger. I also choose to interpret them as a sign of desperation: they threaten us because they cannot achieve a hudna and they are presently being whipped in Somalia, Afghanistan, the Phillipines and soon Bahgdad. Iran is also playing every string possible in Iraq, Lebanon, and Venezuela, to disperse the focus of our efforts to defeat Islamofacism. No where is the battlefield more important than Iraq. Ayman al-Zawahiri's letter to Abu Musab al-Zarqawi states on page 2 "The first stage: Expel the Americans from Iraq." Therefore we must not leave Iraq before the Iraqi nation is stable, secure, and free from ill willed foreign influence.

WHAT SCOFFLAWS IN SWEDEN MIGHT SAY ABOUT RESPECT FOR WESTREN LAWS
It appears the city of Malmö, Sweden has a problem with scofflaws: approximately $10 million dollars of parking tickets remain unpaid.

Guess what - the three who scoff at the law the most are: Ousamma Alaiyan, 5.030.978 Swedish kroner - about $700,000 US dollars; Majid Mohammad, 2,9 million kroner - about $416,000 US dollars; and Yssar Mahdi, who owes the Swedish state 2,4 million kroner - about $345,000 US dollars.

If you haven't noticed these names are not typically Swedish names. Who are these people? Is it possible they are also participating in other forms of criminal behavior?

Racism! Whites not allowed in Black Caucus
Get this:

"Freshman Rep. Stephen I. Cohen, D-Tenn., is not joining the Congressional Black Caucus after several current and former members made it clear that a white lawmaker was not welcome.

"I think they're real happy I'm not going to join," said Cohen, who succeeded Rep. Harold Ford, D-Tenn., in a majority-black Memphis district. "It's their caucus and they do things their way. You don't force your way in. You need to be invited."

WHY I LOVE GEORGE W. BUSH
Ever since 9/11 President Bush has protected this country and taken it to the terrorists. As a result we haven't had one single terrorist attack on U.S. soil in the 5 years since then. Not only does he not get credit for this but he gets attacked by the naysayers.

Here are two of my favorite excerpts from his State of the Union Address:

"Our success in this war is often measured by the things that did not happen. We cannot know the full extent of the attacks that we and our allies have prevented, but here is some of what we do know: We stopped an al Qaeda plot to fly a hijacked airplane into the tallest building on the West Coast. We broke up a Southeast Asian terror cell grooming operatives for attacks inside the United States. We uncovered an al Qaeda cell developing anthrax to be used in attacks against America. And just last August, British authorities uncovered a plot to blow up passenger planes bound for America over the Atlantic Ocean. For each life saved, we owe a debt of gratitude to the brave public servants who devote their lives to finding the terrorists and stopping them."

"In such courage and compassion, ladies and gentlemen, we see the spirit and character of America -- and these qualities are not in short supply. This is a decent and honorable country -- and resilient, too. We've been through a lot together. We've met challenges and faced dangers, and we know that more lie ahead. Yet we can go forward with confidence -- because the State of our Union is strong, our cause in the world is right, and tonight that cause goes on. God bless."

SOTU PROVES THAT THES DEMS ARE NOT ANTI-WAR, BUT ANTI-MILITARY AND ANTI-VICTORY
HERE'S PROOF; it's from JONAH GOLDBERG:
... the Dems would not stand up en masse was when Bush said we should pursue victory:
This is not the fight we entered in Iraq, but it is the fight we are in. Every one of us wishes that this war were over and won. Yet it would not be like us to leave our promises unkept, our friends abandoned, and our own security at risk. Ladies and gentlemen: On this day, at this hour, it is still within our power to shape the outcome of this battle. So let us find our resolve, and turn events toward victory.
This was not a policy statement by Bush but a clear statement of a GOAL - VICTORY, one the Left OBVIOUSLY doesn't share.

(And Webb's reply was clearly a Leftist assault on the free marketplace: the Left wants to pick winners and losers.)

NEWS FROM BRITAIN PROVES THAT NATIONALIZED HEALTHCARE IS TERRIBLE - FOR THE CHILDREN!

METRO CO/UK:
Thousands of diabetic children could risk losing limbs because the NHS cash crisis is hitting services, said a report out on Wednesday.

Four out of five diabetic children have poor glucose control, putting them at risk of developing complications, it said.

In the UK, there are 20,000 children under the age of 15 with type 1 diabetes, which means sufferers are dependent on insulin. Another 1,000 children have type 2, which is associated with obesity, but many more youngsters are undiagnosed. ...

The cash crisis means Pediatric Diabetes Specialist Nurses (PDSNs) are overstretched, it said. According to the Royal College of Nursing, there should be no more than 70 children to each nurse but some NHS trusts have caseloads of up to 300 children, meaning PDSNs take on more. Almost every region in England has seen an increase in the number of children each PDSN manages, the reports said.

Over a third (40%) of trusts have no protocols for transferring children into adult diabetic care while nearly a third of youngsters who want psychological support do not receive it, it added. Douglas Smallwood, chief executive of Diabetes UK, said: 'No wonder 80% of children have poor blood glucose control.
SO WHEN SOCIALISTS LIKE HILLARY AND PELOSI TELL YOU THAT THEIR POLICIES ARE "FOR THE CHILDREN", TELL THEM TO GO TO H*LL.

"ARE WE NOT MEN?" ... maybe not, maybe to the Gramscian Left we are BEASTS?
The deliberate beautification and gentrification, if you will, of human-equine sex by the post-modernist intelligentsia at the Sundance Festival (see our previous post) is not an isolated phenomenon. We have identified this artistic activity as part of an overall Gramscian attack on the fundamental values and cultural institutions of the West. The Gramscian left's overall program calls for the destruction of the family, private property, and organized religion. The ultimate goal is our dehumanization.

The proximate goal of the bestiality buffs is to blur the distinction between the human and the animal, and thereby to reduce human beings to the status of animals.

And that's not the only way that our civilization's traditional view of a separation between the human and animal realms is being dissolved. Let me show you how.

Although there initiatives were widely reported as a comedic faits divers, leftist legislators in Spain were deadly serious when in June 2006 they introduced a bill to accord human rights to the great apes.

Spain could soon become the first country in the world to give chimpanzees, gorillas, orangutans and other great apes some of the fundamental rights granted to human beings under a law being proposed by members of the ruling Socialist coalition.

The law would eliminate the concept of "ownership" for great apes, instead placing them under the "moral guardianship" of the state, much as is the case for children in care, the severely handicapped and those in comas, said the MP behind the project, Francisco Garrido.

Please note that the apes will share the present legal status of children, the severely handicapped, and those in comas. The identity and character of those categories of individuals will be important in this discussion.

Despite the enthusiasm of the socialist ruling coalition, not everybody in Spain is on board:

The Roman Catholic Church has expressed concerns about his resolution. The Archbishop of Pamplona and Tudela, Fernando Sebastian, has said that only a "ridiculous or distorted society" could propose such a law. "We don't give rights to some people - such as unborn children, human embryos, and we are going to give them to apes," the archbishop said.

Amnesty International's Spanish branch has also expressed concerns, saying that humans have yet to see their rights fully guaranteed. A senior member of the Spanish opposition Partido Popular, Arturo Esteban, called the proposal an "act of moral poverty".

Advocates of conferring "personhood" on the great apes claim that such a measure will not diminish human rights:

Amnesty International correctly observed that the rights of many humans in the world are yet to be respected. The group also correctly understood that advocates are actually asking for basic rights for nonhuman apes, acknowledged by the United Nations — not just improvements in the conditions in which humans hold and use other great apes.

What Amnesty International misses is that respecting the 'personhood' of great apes does not diminish human rights. There is no reason why the basic rights of life, liberty, and freedom from torture should only be applicable to humans. Moreover, such a change would help humanity to preserve the environment instead of destroying it, and it would open more general discussions of animal rights in Spain.

The Catholic Church is on record opposing the measure. Fernando Sebastian denounced the concept when, in the archbishop's view, abortions violate the human rights of embryos. The archbishop also reportedly said, "Too much progress becomes ridiculous."

The ape rights initiative has received backing from academics in dozen of universities. GRASP submitted a letter of support for the measure.

However, according the human rights associated with a concept like "liberty" to an animal, even one of the great apes, inevitably trivializes and diminishes the status of that right for human beings.

And it is of course a direct contradiction of the basic concept of human freedom and responsibility enshrined in the Jewish Bible, which is also accepted by Christianity. The "personhood" activists want to grant human liberties to animals, but do you think they would accept the equally absurd idea of putting an animal on trial for its instinctual actions? Would you try a hungry wolf for the killing of a defenseless fawn before a jury of ruminants or carnivores?

By elevating an animal to human status, and human stature, the post-modern relativists want to degrade the status of the human being. If human beings are only animals, then there is really no moral problem with the State's altruistic and beneficent servants (notice the claim that "academics in dozens of universities" support granting human rights to apes) incarcerating or even killing any humans they deem unable to enjoy a proper "quality of life." A foetus, a defenseless adult in a coma, or a severely handicapped person can be discarded without compunction.

Eugenic breeding and eugenic culling of human specimens would thus be no worse than any other form of animal husbandry.

The Spanish government took another step towards abolishing human personhood by directly attacking the biological and familiar basis of human reproduction; henceforth, Spanish birth certificates will not list the baby's Mother and Father, but only its "Progenitor A" and "Progenitor B:"

The new changes replacing Mother and Father come courtesy of a ministerial order.

"Juan Fernando López Aguilar, Spanish Minister of Justice, excused the ministerial order by claiming since the government modified "the status of civil marriages, to allow the union of same-sex couples, it was necessary for a new format for the Family Book (Libro de Familia) and one that uses terms such as "Parent A" and "Parent B" instead of "Father" and "Mother".

There is furthermore no reason that the socialist governments of the world should stop there. The Canadian Supreme Court recently decided that a child can legally have three parents, and ordered the State to register both women in a same-sex relationship as his mothers, with the "family friend" who provided the sperm to be listed as his father. In the dystopian world of polyamorous "families" and "alternative" living-arrangements, why should a birth certificate only show "Progenitor A," "Progenitor B," and not "C," "D," and "E?"

Strictly speaking of course, what the Spanish government and the Canadian Supreme Court have enacted is nonsense, and makes as much sense as King Hardicanute ordering the incoming tide to recede, or a law commanding the Sun to rise in the West. Only in a science fiction fantasy does any human child come into the world with anything other than one mother and one father. Elementary biology shows us that a fertilized human embryo consists of the ovum provided by the mother and the DNA from the sperm, provided by the father.

I am not speaking now of the critical role played in child development by an active, involved father, and the drastic social consequences faced by children in our inner cities who are growing up in a fatherless world. Although that is also part of the brave new world the socialists are wishing on us.

Again in this instance, I am reminded of H.G. Wells's fevered vision of the Island of Doctor Moreau, where half-animal, half-human victims of the Doctor's self-important and unethical experimentation struggled for their identity:

“Say the words,” said the Ape-man, repeating, and the figures in the doorway echoed this, with a threat in the tone of their voices.

I realised that I had to repeat this idiotic formula; and then began the insanest ceremony. The voice in the dark began intoning a mad litany, line by line, and I and the rest to repeat it. As they did so, they swayed from side to side in the oddest way, and beat their hands upon their knees; and I followed their example. I could have imagined I was already dead and in another world. That dark hut, these grotesque dim figures, just flecked here and there by a glimmer of light, and all of them swaying in unison and chanting,

“Not to go on all-fours; that is the Law. Are we not Men?

“Not to suck up Drink; that is the Law. Are we not Men?

“Not to eat Fish or Flesh; that is the Law. Are we not Men?

“Not to claw the Bark of Trees; that is the Law. Are we not Men?

“Not to chase other Men; that is the Law. Are we not Men?”

And so from the prohibition of these acts of folly, on to the prohibition of what I thought then were the maddest, most impossible, and most indecent things one could well imagine. A kind of rhythmic fervour fell on all of us; we gabbled and swayed faster and faster, repeating this amazing Law. Superficially the contagion of these brutes was upon me, but deep down within me the laughter and disgust struggled together. We ran through a long list of prohibitions, and then the chant swung round to a new formula.

“His is the House of Pain.

“His is the Hand that makes.

“His is the Hand that wounds.

“His is the Hand that heals.”

And so on for another long series, mostly quite incomprehensible gibberish to me about Him, whoever he might be. I could have fancied it was a dream, but never before have I heard chanting in a dream.

“His is the lightning flash,” we sang. “His is the deep, salt sea.”

A horrible fancy came into my head that Moreau, after animalising these men, had infected their dwarfed brains with a kind of deification of himself. However, I was too keenly aware of white teeth and strong claws about me to stop my chanting on that account.

“His are the stars in the sky.”

At last that song ended. I saw the Ape-man's face shining with perspiration; and my eyes being now accustomed to the darkness, I saw more distinctly the figure in the corner from which the voice came. It was the size of a man, but it seemed covered with a dull grey hair almost like a Skye-terrier. What was it? What were they all?
There is a difference between a human being and an animal. To be sure, the human being is built upon the chassis of an animal body. But although the animal is endowed with a "living spirit" (Genesis 1:24), the human being also has soul that derives from the breath of God (Genesis 2:7). To deny the difference is to make a mockery of both the human being and of the animal -- it is to transform the animal from that which he is, into a childish cartoon figure; and it is to degrade the human being, and all of his potential, into the passive victim of the bureaucratic intelligentsia.

I am also reminded of the recurrent and defiant refrain in Bertolt Brecht's song "Wie Man Sich Bettet" -- "Ein Mensch ist kein Tier!" A human being is not an animal:
Meine Herren, meine mutter praegte

Your Honors, my mother pronounced
An awful curse on me - that
I'd end up in the morgue
Or an even worser place.
Yes, a word like that, it's easily said.
But I say to you: Nothing will come of it!
You can't do that with me!
A human being is not an animal!
The freedom and potential of the human being is what is being called into question by the multi-faceted Gramscian attacks on human dignity and on marriage & the family. That is what is at stake in the left's culture war today. If we do not win that war, we will cease to be human beings. Let us remember then, "Are we not men?"

"RED AMERICA" IS FRIENDLIER AND HAPPIER THAN "BLUE AMERICA"
YUP: COUNTIES BUSH CARRIED ARE FDRIENDLIER AND HAPPIER - AND GROWING, TOO. CITIES - THE DENSE COUNTIES WHICH THE DEMOCRATS CARRIED - ARE LESS HAPPY AND LESS FRIENDLY.
(Hat tip TAN/Bookworm.)

I KNOW THIS IS TRUE. I LIVE IN NYC. Maybe this is what it all comes down to: the Lefties are unhappy and they want the state to make them happy, and make "you" unhappy!"

ARE THE LEBANESE RIOTS TIMED TO MAKE BUSH LOOK BAD?
Well, if they aren't, the net effect is still that they are hitting the same day as the Presidential State of the Union speech:
An opposition protest turned violent today as thousands of Hezbollah supporters blocked roads leading into Beirut, burning tires and cars and clashing with government loyalists. The escalation brought the Lebanese capital to a virtual standstill and heightened fears that the nearly two-month long political crisis could burst into sectarian conflict.

Along one major thoroughfare, government loyalists faced off with Hezbollah demonstrators with a brawl and sporadic gunfire. One side raised photos of the Hezbollah leader, Sheik Hassan Nasrallah, and burned photographs of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri, whose assassination in 2005 originally set off Lebanon’s political turmoil. The other side, lined up across the street, raised photographs of Mr. Hariri and Prime Minister Fouad Siniora, and even of Saddam Hussein, while shouting epithets back.

Until now, the opposition protest has largely been noisy but peaceful, as both sides dug in for a long fight. Hezbollah, together with the Christian Free Patriotic Movement and several smaller groups, descended on Beirut last month, calling for Mr. Siniora’s resignation and for early parliamentary elections in order to form a so-called national unity government in which Hezbollah and its allies would have veto power.
Yep, until now, it's been "peaceful." One has to wonder if something big and bad will happen right before the SOTU address tonight. The enemy would love that. And they're very PR conscious.

NORMAN FINKELSTEIN: DENIER OF THE IMPLICATIONS OF THE HOLOCAUST, AND APOLOGIST FOR TERROR

When I looked into who Norman Finkelstein was the first thought that came to mind is he must be David Duke's long lost brother.

Patrick Ishmael gave me the heads up about Finkelstein being slated to speak at SLU (Saint Louis University) on January 30th . Just another testament to how leftist Universities embrace anti-semites.

Finkelstein is the author of "The Holocaust Industry". To give you an idea of where he is coming from, Noam Chomsky is a big fan of the book and a good friend of Finkelstein's.

Check out Ishmael's post on this to see Finkelstein's Lebanese interview. Also, you may want to let SLU know what you think about having Finkelstein on their campus.

Reliapundit adds: Finkelstein's in "good" company with Chomsky, Jimmy Carter, David Duke, David Irving and Arafat and Binladen and Nasrallah and Ahmadinejad!

Here's a link to a pro-palestinian/pro-Jimmy Carter article he wrote for the leftist mag Znet. And here's a link to a pro-palestinian book of his - in which he defends the intifada.

BOTTOM-LINE:
He defends jihadoterrorists and Nazis - two of the most ruthless genocidal hate-groups of all time, and condemns Israel and Jews - the most besieged nation on the globe and the most persecuted people on the Earth in all of human history. Say no more.

JEWS IN YEMEN ARE BEING THREATENED
WorldNetDaily reports that the Jewish community of Yemen is under threat from Islamic militants, and forced to pay jizyah:
JERUSALEM – Many of Yemen's Jews this weekend fled their homes for a hotel after receiving death threats from Islamic militants accusing the country's tiny Jewish community of serving as agents for "global Zionism."

The Jews said they feared for their lives. It was disclosed they had been forced to pay special taxes that Islam imposes on Jews and Christians in return for protection and security. About 45 Jews left their village in Sa'ada county in Yemen after Dawoud Yousuf Mousa, one of the heads of the local Jewish community, was warned Jan. 10 if the Jews don't leave within 10 days they would be exposed to killings, abductions and looting.

Four masked militants approached Mousa and delivered a letter to him warning the Jewish community had been under Islamic surveillance. "After accurate surveillance over the Jews residing in Al Haid, it has become clear to us that they were doing things which serve mainly global Zionism, which seeks to corrupt the people and distance them from their principles, their values, their morals, and their religion," the letter stated. "Islam calls upon us to fight against the disseminators of decay," the letter said. The threats have been attributed to disciples of Shiite religious leader Hossein Bader a-Din al-Khouty. [...]

Most of Yemen's Jews were evacuated to Israel in Operation Magic Carpet, a series of semi-secret airlifts between June 1949 and September 1950 that brought 45,000 to the Jewish state with the assistance of Britain and the U.S. A smaller, continuous migration was allowed to continue until 1962, when a civil war in Yemen put an abrupt halt to any further Jewish exodus. Several thousand Jews remained.
There should be made an appeal on their behalf, and I think that they should all be brought over to Israel for their safety and a better life. In a backwards country like Yemen, there's simply no future to be had there.

ANOTHER GRAMSCIAN ATTACK ON AMERICA'S FAMILIES

The Gramscian left has won another victory against Western civilization.
Just persuading the gliberal glitterati to accept bestiality as a normal subject for a normal film would go a long way towards undermining marriage and family in America.

But they have gone even further than that in their depraved attack on decency.

They have succeeded in making it (in the words of the Sundance Festival's official website) "as smart as it is eloquent."

By undermining the foundations of our culture from within, the Gramscian left seeks to render us too weak to withstand the attacks the come from without.

Perversely, although they appear to favor every form of license and the most extreme manifestations of irresponsibility and recklessness, they seek to destroy every traditional human institution (such as church & family) only in order to foster their dystopian State, in which only the State is permitted to mediate any and every aspect of daily life.

Reliapundit adds: The post modern, Gramscian Left wants liberty without Natural Law; this is of course nothing more than libertinage, and it's decadent - perniciously so. These statists are like perverted nannies: they want a strong state in order to mainstream (IOW: force down your throat) their decadence, and also to regulate things like smoking on private property. If he were alive today, the tyrant Caligula would be a member of the Gramscian Left - he'd probably live in SF and vote for Pelosi. Heck: he'd be a big fundraiser for her and the rest of the New Democrats! [Then again, perhaps Caligula was not as bad as toay's Gramscian left: he merely made his favorite horse a Senator; he didn't have sex with it - at least that was never alleged publicly!]

WILL ISRAEL JOIN NATO?
JPOST EXCLUSIVE. RTWT.

Excerpt: In an effort to establish more effective deterrence in the face of Iran's race to obtain nuclear weapons, government ministries are, for the first time, working on drafting a position paper that will include guidelines and a strategy for turning Israel into a full-fledged member of NATO, The Jerusalem Post has learned.

Iraqi MP: America Is The Defender Of Democracy In Iraq

Here's an Iraqi who gets it:
Interviewer: "How can the Iraqi public, which is anti-American, and which believes the U.S. is the Great Satan, support people who talk the way you do?"

Iyad Jamal Al-Din: "Whoever believes America is the Great Satan should not shake its hand. I do not consider the U.S. to be the Great Satan. I view it as the sponsor and founder of the project of democracy, and the defender of democracy in Iraq.

You can be sure that if America were to withdraw today, there would be Shiite massacres of Shiites, Sunni massacres of Sunnis, and Kurdish massacres of Kurds. The strong would again devour the weak, until somebody would be back the next day - there's no doubt about it. We are still far from democracy."
God bless this man. Watch the video of the interview.

Are The Terrorist Forces In Iraq Ramping Up In Preparation For The State Of The Union Address?
Clearly, they are ramping up their attacks. Check this out:
BAGHDAD, Jan. 21 — The United States military said that two marines died Sunday in western Iraq and that an additional seven service members died Saturday. The deaths brought the weekend toll to 27 and made Saturday the third-deadliest day for United States forces since the war here began.
The enemy now knows they only have to keep it up for another year to win. They know how many troops we are sending and they know where. And, they know the score. They know the Democrats are poised to give up.

This morning I did something I very rarely do. I watched television. And, Diane Sawyer was droning on and on about the weekend's death toll. It occurred to me that in World War II, such reports would not have been made public at all. The reporting on the war was all big picture. Did we gain ground? Did we win or lose this or that major battle? Casualty rates would not have been the main part of the report, and for the most part, they came to light more as rumor than as hard fact.

That's the way it needs to be to win a war.

The way we fight our information war in this day and age is suicidal, and it needs to stop.

HOMESCHOOLING AND THE CULTURE WAR

"What about home schooling? You know, it's not just for scary religious people anymore."--From Buffy The Vampire Slayer

I usually like to say that I'm not your typical homeschooling mom but I'm not sure there is one anymore. The stereotype used to be a mother with long gray hair in a bun always wearing a jean jumper with 8 kids. I have 4 kids which is a lot of kids to your average liberal but very few in some homeschooling circles. My husband is a Youth Pastor but my kids watch TV and do Karate and lots of other normal things.

I have home schooled for 8 years but I am considering private school for my kids for next year. I think there are advantages and disadvantages to homeschooling, private school and public school. In considering private school I have examined the strengths and weaknesses of home schooling. I think one of the biggest strengths is being able to prepare your kids with a Conservative, Christian Worldview. One of the biggest problems I have with public schools is that many of them preach a liberal, anti-American worldview to our kids.

Recently my husband had one of the teens from the youth group over. He saw that I had pictures of President Bush up and made some comment. We started talking and it turned into a political debate. It was a cordial debate and he wasn't bad since he is on a debating team. Yet what broke my heart was how he has been completely indoctrinated via the public school system and the liberal media. All this coming from a pretty good kid but one whose world view is seriously flawed.

Liberals have taken over many of the college campuses, the public school system, Hollywood and the Drive By Media. If we are to combat liberals completely taking over the culture we will have to take an active role in training our kids.

National flag a symbol of racism?

Today Australia, tomorrow the USA?
"The Australian flag has been banned from this year's Big Day Out in Sydney after organisers branded it a "gang colour" and symbol of hate.

The Daily Telegraph has learned organisers of the Aussie rock festival at Homebush will confiscate any flag or bandana bearing the national symbol at the gate.

Source
How the elite hate the patriotism of ordinary people! They claim that the ban is because "racists" use the flag but is not their reaction to the deeds and attitudes of a tiny minority an example of that evil, overgeneralized "stereotyping" that they condemn in others? By the same logic, all blacks are to blame for the actions of the criminal minority of blacks.

EUROPE SENDS BILLIONS TO PUTIN FOR "KYOTO CREDITS"

In an earlier post, I quoted David Warren's grim assessment of Europe's latest folly, the purchase of Kyoto Credits from Putin's Russia. Here's Warren:

The mystery deepens. Turning the newspaper page, we find that, under demented Kyoto arrangements, Germany’s Dresdner Bank is now brokering an arrangement by which European companies will pay 15 billion euros to the corrupt and autocratic Russian state monopoly, Gazprom, in return for “carbon credits” to continue selling oil and gas to European customers on the open market.

This money in turn will help Russia’s dark, authoritarian regime to invest further in its ability to hold Europeans who depend on Russian heating oil through the winter to ransom when it has political demands.

They start by opposing capital punishment. They end by insisting on hanging themselves. [UMPH ADDED.]

And here's some more information about this ridiculous situation: European nations agreed to the "Kyoto" process, and have set carbon emissions limits for themselves. In order to exceed those limits, they are going to buy "credits" from Russia. These "credits" are a fictional device. The Europeans are buying permission to pollute -- from Russia, the most polluted country in Europe. Russia delivers nothing. Reuters:
Gazprombank and Dresdner Kleinwort plan to invest in projects generating carbon credits under the Kyoto Protocol, in a Russian and east European market worth up to 5 billion euros ($6.5 billion) through to 2012.

But Gazprombank, owned by the world's largest gas company Gazprom (GAZP.MM: Quote, Profile , Research), admitted that no projects could actually be implemented until Russia passed laws to govern emissions trading -- something it has repeatedly promised but failed to deliver.
Furthermore:
Outside JI schemes, which allow investors to book foreign emission savings as their own, experts say Russia may have as many as 3 billion tonnes of spare quotas to sell under Kyoto's terms if it passes the required laws.
Thus Western Europe itself funds the tyrannical regime that is still seeking to subvert it. As Lenin said, "When the last of the bourgeoisie is hanged, it will be a capitalist who sells us the rope."

HIZBALLAH ARE IRANIAN AGENTS, AND OPERATING HERE

As translated by the indispensable MEMRI, in an interview in the Kuwaiti Daily Al-Siyassa, former Hizballah secretary-general Sheikh Subhi Al-Tufeili admitted that the gang of Lebanese Shi'ite terrorists is an "integral part of Iranian Intelligence":

Question: "You were formerly Hizbullah secretary-general. Is the [situation in Lebanon] within the strategic framework of Hizbullah? Does Hizbullah have an outlined and prepared plan that is being implemented today? Why do you think Hizbullah has become a source of anxiety for the Lebanese? "

Al-Tufeili: "It wasn't like this in the beginning. Hizbullah's activity was limited to resistance [operations]... But, unfortunately, the problem has developed today to the point where they have succeeded in changing Hizbullah from a resistance force into a tool to be used in [whatever] direction they want."

Question: "Does this mean that Hizbullah does not make its own decisions, and that its orders come from outside [Lebanon]?"

Al-Tufeili: "Yes, Hizbullah is a tool, and it is an integral part of the Iranian intelligence apparatus. Unfortunately, all the elements in the [Lebanese] arena have become tools, and take orders from outside [Lebanon]..."

Remember, Hizballah are the terrorists who killed 241 American servicemen and 58 French paratroopers in Beirut in 1983. As the Wikipedia entry reminds us:
This was the deadliest single-day death toll for the United States Marine Corps since the Battle of Iwo Jima (2,500 in one day) of World War II and the deadliest single-day death toll for the United States military since the 243 killed on 31st January 1968 — the first day of the Tet offensive in the Vietnam war. The attack remains the deadliest post-World War II attack on Americans overseas.
Moreover, as the Wikipedia continues:
In May 2003, in a case brought by the families of the 241 servicemen who were killed, U.S. District Court Judge Royce C. Lamberth declared that the Islamic Republic of Iran was responsible for the 1983 attack. Lamberth concluded that Hezbollah was formed under the auspices of the Iranian government, was completely reliant on Iran in 1983, and assisted Iranian Ministry of Information and Security agents in carrying out the operation.[7] Among the intelligence information initially uncovered by Thomas Fortune Fay, an attorney for the families of the victims, was a National Security Agency (NSA) intercept of a message sent from Iranian intelligence headquarters in Tehran to Hojjat ol-eslam Ali Akbar Mohtashemi, the Iranian ambassador in Damascus. As it was paraphrased by presiding U.S. District Court Judge Royce C. Lamberth, "The message directed the Iranian ambassador to contact Hussein Musawi, the leader of the terrorist group Islamic Amal, and to instruct him ... 'to take a spectacular action against the United States Marines.'"[3]
The Democrats in the Senate want to make sure that the President is denied his Constitutional authority to respond with force to an act of war from Iran.

Meanwhile, Iran is at war with the United States, and has been at war with the United States for over 20 years.

And their Hizballah agents are hard at work inside our homeland territory:

Michelle Malkin had photographs of Hizballah demonstrators back in July, 2006. And Debbie Schlussel documented Hizballah activities in the heart of America here and here. A Washington Times editorial back in May 2005 concerned "Hezbollah in America," and FOX News presented a documentary on the terrorist group's operations in America just last night. As their summary says:

One of those operations is the subject of “Smokescreen: Hezbollah Inside America,” an exhaustive FOX News report about a Hezbollah cell that was operating for several years in Charlotte, North Carolina. FOX followed the many tentacles of this cell, which extended far beyond Charlotte — to Michigan, to the West Coast, to Canada and to Beirut, Lebanon, where most of the members were from. FOX News spent months tracking this story to all these places and more.

At least one member of the Hezbollah cell first came to the U.S. on forged visa picked up in Venezuela. Others overstayed their tourist or student visas. Once here, they began making millions through a combination of tobacco smuggling, credit card schemes, and arranging phony “green-card” marriages. They even succeeded at obtaining a $1.7 million loan from the Small Business Administration.

Got that? The Iranian founded, backed, and directed terrorist group that blew up the U.S. Embassy in Beirut, the Marine barracks in Beirut, and the Khobar Towers in Saudi Arabia (all many years before President Bush was even elected Governor of Texas) is actively operating in Michigan, California, and the Carolinas.

And that moron John Conyers wants to do what with the Patriot Act?

RUSSIAN & BRITISH ASTRONOMERS WARN: WARMING SUNSPOT CYCLE MAY BE OVER; GLOBAL COOLING MAY BEGIN

Previously, The Astute Bloggers have noted that Danish scientists have suggested that the apparent increase in solar energy retained by the earth's climate has more to do with the Sun than with the puny efforts of Man. Specifically, with the interaction between cosmic rays and water molecules in the upper atmosphere.

Blogger Al Fin (Hat tip: Andrew Stuttaford) recently identified reports concerning the opinions of Professor Nigel Weiss (Cambridge University) and Habibulo Adusamatov (St. Petersburg) on just this subject.

Professor Weiss ("Professor Emeritus at the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics at the University of Cambridge, past President of the Royal Astronomical Society, and a scientist as honoured as they come") is certain that we are about to enter a cooling period.

Dr. Weiss believes that man-made greenhouse gases have recently had a role in warming the earth, although the extent of that role, he says, cannot yet be known. What is known, however, is that throughout earth's history climate change has been driven by factors other than man: "Variable behaviour of the sun is an obvious explanation," says Dr. Weiss, "and there is increasing evidence that Earth's climate responds to changing patterns of solar magnetic activity."

The sun's most obvious magnetic features are sunspots, formed as magnetic fields rip through the sun's surface. A magnetically active sun boosts the number of sunspots, indicating that vast amounts of energy are being released from deep within.

Typically, sunspots flare up and settle down in cycles of about 11 years. In the last 50 years, we haven't been living in typical times: "If you look back into the sun's past, you find that we live in a period of abnormally high solar activity," Dr. Weiss states.

These hyperactive periods do not last long, "perhaps 50 to 100 years, then you get a crash," says Dr. Weiss. 'It's a boom-bust system, and I would expect a crash soon."

In addition to the 11-year cycle, sunspots almost entirely "crash," or die out, every 200 years or so as solar activity diminishes. When the crash occurs, the Earth can cool dramatically. Dr. Weiss knows because these phenomenon, known as "Grand minima," have recurred over the past 10,000 years, if not longer.

"The deeper the crash, the longer it will last," Dr. Weiss explains. In the 17th century, sunspots almost completely disappeared for 70 years. That was the coldest interval of the Little Ice Age, when New York Harbour froze, allowing walkers to journey from Manhattan to Staten Island, and when Viking colonies abandoned Greenland, a once verdant land that became tundra. Also in the Little Ice Age, Finland lost one-third of its population, Iceland half.

Global cooling would be much more of problem than global warming! And note that sunspots and cosmic rays are directly related; when there are more sunspots, there are more cosmic rays.

Professor Adusamatov ("head of the space research laboratory at the St. Petersburg-based Pulkovo Observatory") suggests that increasing levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere are not the cause, but rather an effect produced by global warming.

"Global warming results not from the emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, but from an unusually high level of solar radiation and a lengthy - almost throughout the last century - growth in its intensity," Abdusamatov told RIA Novosti in an interview.

"It is no secret that when they go up, temperatures in the world's oceans trigger the emission of large amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. So the common view that man's industrial activity is a deciding factor in global warming has emerged from a misinterpretation of cause and effect relations."

He notes that the world's oceans are not actually warming:

Abdusamatov claimed that the upper layers of the world's oceans are - much to climatologists' surprise - becoming cooler, which is a clear indication that the Earth has hit its temperature ceiling already, and that solar radiation levels are falling and will eventually lead to a worldwide cold spell.

"Instead of professed global warming, the Earth will be facing a slow decrease in temperatures in 2012-2015. The gradually falling amounts of solar energy, expected to reach their bottom level by 2040, will inevitably lead to a deep freeze around 2055-2060," he said, adding that this period of global freeze will last some 50 years, after which the temperatures will go up again.

"There is no need for the Kyoto Protocol now, and it does not have to come into force until at least a hundred years from now - a global freeze will come about regardless of whether or not industrialized countries put a cap on their greenhouse gas emissions," Abdusamatov said.

The cynical use Vladmir Putin's corrupt and anti-democratic regime is making of the Kyoto Protocols deserves its own post.

THE FAIRNESS DOCTRINE AT THE HUFFINGTON POST

There are no stronger proponents of the Fairness Doctrine than the gang at The Huffington Post. Their recent entry into the fray comes from Taylor Marsh (I've never heard of her either). Amazingly, in one paragraph she completely implodes and defeats her entire argument:
But the Fairness Doctrine isn't going to kill Rush or Hannity. With tens of millions of listeners and a dozen years head start, are they really in jeopardy? This is about something much bigger. The Fairness Doctrine would bring new competition to the radio airwaves at all levels all across this country. It wouldn't keep a show on that wasn't any good either. But even wingnuts like Rush and Sean would actually have to offer facts amidst their snide, condescending decent into propaganda, while having guests on to offer the opposite side. That's just too much work, especially for Rush, who hasn't broken a sweat, except when he was in trouble for allegedly doctor shopping pills, or when he got caught with somebody else's penis pills after his single man's holiday to an underage capital of the world.
Wow. Okay, first off let's get one fact straight: The Fairness Doctrine would work and would be a good idea if all media was controlled by the state. If this were the Soviet Union in the early 1980s and they installed a Fairness Doctrine to allow non-communist views to be heard on Pravda, we in the West would have applauded.

But here in America, we live in a free society where the news media is not controlled by the state - except for the fact that the government controls the licenses to the broadcast spectrum. Some governmental rules then apply to those licensees, of course, but unless the government is prepared to completely dictate content (like the Lefties did in the Soviet Union), the fairness doctrine cannot work. Companies which broadcast are businesses. And in a free society - again, this is a still a free society, and in a free society you have free market capitalism, otherwise you're society cannot really be free.

Okay, let's look at Marsh's argument: She says what's the harm if the "wingnuts" already have such a head start? Okay, that's a fair point, but then she argues that radio stations wouldn't keep a show on the air which wasn't any good. Um, with the Fairness Doctrine in place, they would have to. That's the main problem with the whole idea. In the name of "fairness" you give the public programs even if they don't want them. This argument would have a leg to stand on if only Air America had decent ratings, but instead, it's been a disaster.

Then, like a German car that goes from 0-to-60 in less than 6 seconds, Marsh descends into Leftist hate faster than you can say "Hail Stalin!" She rips into Rush Limbaugh for his alleged doctor shopping and for having "somebody else's penis-pills after his single man's holiday to an underage capital of the world."

Hmmm, interesting. What's her proof that Rush was cavorting with underage Dominican women? It's he's Rush Limbaugh, he had Viagra, he was in the Dominican Republic. Not exactly stellar journalism from someone who's lecturing us on fairness.

And you know what else is interesting. I looked over The Huffington Post, and I didn't see any entries offering an opposing view on Rush Limbaugh's personal life. Thank you and good night.

POLLING, FAIR-WEATHER HAWKS AND THE OVERALL POPULARITY OF THE IRAQ WAR
About 35% of the American public are committed hawks; about 30% are committed doves; about 20% blow any which way that day's or week's news is blowing: if news is good then they are pro-war; if news is bad, then they are anti-war. And about 15% never care enough to decide what they are.

Any analysis of the SALIENT ups and downs of the first three years of the Iraq War proves this: when Baghdad fell; when Saddam was caught; when good elections were held - then the war went up in overall popularity. This is because the fair-weather hawks decided that because of that week's news the war was okay. When these folks think the war is going badly they become doves.

The RELENTLESSLY one-sided and deliberately negative reportage of the MSM has made these fair-weather hawks more negative than ever - and turned them into doves, for the time being. This is EXACTLY how the MSM skewed the American public to feel negatively about the Vietnam War (after the Tet Offensive, which we WON). We were also WINNING the Vietnam War and Vietnamization was working, and we were also fighting for completely noble and extremely important geopolitical reasons. When the doves of the Democrat Party voted to cut off funding of the South Vietnamese government in 1975 - two full years after the last US combat troop has left Vietnam - it led to the treaty-violating invasion of South Vietnam by North Vietnam, 2 million Boat People, Pol Pot's genocide of 3.5 million Cambodians, and the collapse of Laos. Had we just kept advisory and support troops in South Vietnam and kept up our financial aid these horrible things WOULD NEVER HAVE HAPPENED. Our RETREAT from Southeast Asia encouraged the USSR to invade Afghanistan, and the jihadist to overthrow the Shah. So you see, our dovish Left-wing anti-Vietnam War policies had horrible long-term ramifications - for the entire Free World.

Our combat troops will be needed in Iraq for between one and two years more - according to most analysts, with a perhaps tens of thousands to remain there, on base in Iraq, in order to assist in a continued training and advisory capacity for as long as needed - JUST LIKE IN WE DID IN SOUTH KOREA. This is a reasonable outcome for Iraq, JUST AS IT WAS FOR SOUTH KOREA.

From the position the doves of the Left now advocate for Iraq - "no surge, and withdrawal on an arbitrary timetable" - it is reasonable to feel that these doves do not care about Iraq or the region or the Free World. Advocating these polices for Iraq is like preferring it if we had abandoned South Korea and had let it fall under Stalinist tyranny for the last 50 years. That's just what they're saying now: they wouldn't mind it if Iraq descended into a Taliban-like or Iran-like jihadist tyranny. They'd rather just leave - and stick their heads in the sand.

I for one feel that we can and should make the same opened ended commitment to Iraq as we made for South Korea - and Japan and Western Europe.

Those who claim we don't have the resources are flat pour wrong: we began to fight and eventually won WW2 while mired in a deep DEPRESSION, while unemployment was at its worst. We remain committed to Western Europe from 1946 to 1950 even though our efforts to rebuild it had ALL FAILED UP TO THEN: YUP: The Marshall Plan was not enacted until 1950. There FOUR FULL YEARS OF LACKLUSTER RESULTS UNTIL 1950, BUT AMERICA DID NOT BUG OUT - AS THE LEFT WOULD NOW HAVE US DO!

We can and should do whatever it takes to make sure Iraq doesn't collapse under al Qaeda or Iranian hegemony. It's in in our national interest, the interest of the region, and the free World. Those who decry these goals as unfeasible are wrong, amoral and myopic doves who should be ignored. We must ignore them now; we mustn't repeat the errors of Vietnam.

WISDOM FROM DAVID WARREN

Anyone not reading David Warren's columns should start doing so now. Warren writes for the Ottawa Citizen, and publishes his essays at his own website. He writes on political and social issues, and he writes very well. Mr. Warren's latest contribution discusses the hanging of Barzan Ibrahim al-Tikriti:
Barzan, the late half-brother of Saddam Hussein, was also his intelligence chief. Think for five seconds what that might mean. Among Barzan’s own victims were those he fed feet-first into wood-choppers. And he was able to do such things repeatedly, without the slightest complaint from officials in Italy, France, Turtle Bay, or elsewhere. Now finally he is brought to justice, and the world’s glitziest whited sepulchres suddenly recover their capacity for moral outrage. And all it took was the miscalculation of a ratio between neck diameter and body weight. (Perhaps a metrication error, confusing pounds and kilos.)
As usual, Mr. Warren gets it exactly right:
Extreme sentimentality, on behalf of infamous monsters, is what we have come to expect from the post-rational species of liberal, whom I term a “gliberal” to distinguish him from the real thing. For them, only the side of justice can err. They are indifferent to the victims of injustice. By subtle degrees, they even come to identify with the perpetrators of horrible crimes, though they wouldn’t dare commit such crimes themselves. One cannot understand them without meditating deeply on the nature of the demonic.
He also ties together Europe's sentimentality and its blindness to its own interests:

MUSLIM/TURKISH TEEN MURDERED AN ARMENIAN JOURNALIST

The hatred in Turkey for Armenians is still present, as the following report can tell:
Police on Saturday detained a teenager suspected of slaying an ethnic Armenian journalist, acting on a tip from the boy’s father after his picture was broadcast on Turkish television, senior officials said. Ogun Samast, who is either 16 or 17, was caught on a bus in the Black Sea city of Samsun, said Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. He was traveling, apparently from Istanbul back to his hometown of Trabzon, said Istanbul Gov. Muammer Guler.

Samast was wanted in connection with the killing of Hrant Dink, a 52-year-old editor of the Turkish Armenian newspaper Agos. Dink was gunned down Friday outside his newspaper’s office in Istanbul.

Most Turks assume Dink was targeted for his columns saying the killing of ethnic Armenians by Turks in the early 20th century was genocide. Nationalists consider such statements an insult to Turkey’s honor and a threat to its unity, and Dink had been showered with insults and threats.
Ahem. It WAS genocide, more on which is noted below. The teen has now confessed to the crime:
The teenage boy suspected of fatally shooting an ethnic Armenian journalist confessed during initial questioning that he killed the man, a local prosecutor told a state-run news agency on Sunday. Ahmet Cokcinar - a prosecutor in the city of Samsun, where the boy was caught - told the Anatolia news agency that the teenager confessed to killing Hrant Dink.

Ogun Samast, who is either 16 or 17 years old, was caught Saturday after police acted on a tip from the boy's father after his picture was broadcast on Turkish television, senior officials said. Samast was caught on a bus as he was apparently traveling from Istanbul, where the shooting took place, back to his hometown of Trabzon, Istanbul Gov. Muammer Guler said. [...]

Turkey's relationship with its Armenian minority has long been haunted by a bloody past. Much of its once-influential Armenian population was killed or driven out beginning around 1915 in what an increasing number of nations are calling the first genocide of the 20th century.

Turkey acknowledges that large numbers of Armenians died but vehemently denies it was genocide, saying the overall figure is inflated and the deaths occurred in the civil unrest during the collapse of the Ottoman Empire.
It just shows how Turkey is still comprised of largely a bad lot, if they won't be honest about the facts regarding the Armenian genocide.

Reliapundit adds: LGF reports (via NRO/Corner) that MORE than Turkish nationalism was the cause of the murder:
Maybe the Assassination in Turkey Was Done for Religious Motives? [Michael Ledeen] -- From Little Green Footballs:
The assassination of Turkish-Armenian writer Hrant Dink is being universally portrayed as ethnic strife, a political act by Turkish nationalists against an Armenian critic. Call me Mr. Suspicious, but when I see the entire media monolith pushing an idea like that with so much enthusiasm, I start looking for the real explanation. And the real explanation, as with so many of these media smokescreens, is jihad. Turkish-Armenian editor shot dead in Istanbul. (Hat tip: Paul.)
NTV television said Dink had been shot three times in the head and neck.

Muharrem Gozutok, a restaurant owner near the newspaper, said the assailant looked about 20, wore jeans and a cap and shouted “I shot the non-Muslim” as he left the scene.
This little piece of essential information is now being excised from all wire service and media reports.
The MSM is systematically downplays jihadism in all attacks globally; WHY?! Because it just doesn't fit in with their warped post modern Leftist worldview: which is that Judeo-Christian/Western Civilization is the main thing wrong with the world, (the cause of most genocide, Third World poverty, and global warming). Anything which distracts from this - their "party line" - is censored.

GOING AFTER TERRORISTS IN SOMALIA
It seems that Ethiopia doesn't mess around when it comes to Islamic Terrorists. Islamic Militants took over parts of Somalia last June and ever since then Ethiopia has been helping the weak, transitional government combat them. Things came to a head in December when "Ethiopian Warplanes Attacked Somalia".

The U.S. has also gotten involved with a U.S. Air Force AC-130 gunship attacking a target suspected to be harboring al-qaeda terrorists in Somalia on the 8th of this month. The next day they coordinated with the transitional government of Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya to continue operations against the terrorists. The USS Dwight D. Eisenhower was deployed in the Indian Ocean to aid in the mission.

The transitional Somalian government welcomed the U.S. help since the mission is to go after al-qaeda terrorists indicted for the bombings of the U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania.

The War on Terror isn't just about Iraq and Afghanistan. As President Bush has said we go after the terrorists wherever we find them. Except this time I'm willing to bet we won't leave Somalia until the job is done.

HILLARY HAS BEEN PLANNING FOR A WHILE
According to Schumer's new book, as reported on the Fox News web site:
...In his book, he suggests that Hillary Rodham Clinton first got a twinkle in her eye about running for Senate in New York in 1998, when she came up four times to campaign for him during his contest against Al D'Amato. That puts the beginnings of her interest in a Senate run earlier than many people thought....
Not a surprise, really. Plans for the road to the White House are often carefully laid.

LIEBERMAN CALLS DEM DOVES IN CONGRESS PUSSIES

WELL, NOT EXACTLY PUSSIES - JUST CONGRESSIONAL FELINES; WSJ - (hat tip Memeorandum):
The war in Iraq brings to Joe Lieberman's mind an old Mark Twain story.

"When a cat jumps on a hot stove, the cat never jumps on the stove again because the cat always assumes the stove is hot," says the senator from Connecticut.

"But we are smarter than that. OK, so Vietnam didn't work out. But there are times when you've got to use force, to protect your security and to protect your principles."

Try telling that to the nuisance of congressional felines now prowling around the Iraq debate, eyeing it like a cooker on high boil.

Next week will witness a Senate vote on a resolution condemning President Bush's new plan to quell growing sectarian violence and terrorism in Iraq by increasing the number of troops. While that vote may be largely symbolic, it comes amid far more ominous congressional calls to cut off war funding, to leave the Iraqis to settle their differences, to bring the troops home.
If ever the Iraq political debate was at a crossroads, it's now.

At the center of this fray is Sen. Lieberman, a sort of Horatio at the congressional bridge--spiritedly trying to hold back a bipartisan stampede out of Iraq that he believes will result in devastating consequences for that country, the region and, most importantly, U.S. national security.
Iraq is very winnable, and we will win if the Democrats don't force us to abandon them the way they forced us to abandon the South Vietnamese people and the Contras; (many of the doves then are the very same doves now: Kennedy; Kerry; Levin, et al: WRONG THEN AND WRONG NOW!). Which is to say that Joe is flat out WRONG about "Vietnam not working out", (or under a misconception as to why):
  • FACT: the last US combat troop left Vietnam on March 31, 1973.
  • FACT: South Vietnam didn't fall until TWO YEARS LATER.
  • FACT: the North Vietnamese didn't violate the terms of the Paris Peace treaty and invade the South, and South Vietnam didn't fall until the Democrat inn Congress pulled the plug on financing them and abandoned them to the socialists of North Vietnam.
  • FACT: millions fled Vietnam AFTER the socialist takeover; millions did not get in boat to enter Vietnam.
  • FACT: socialist Pol Pot promptly took over Cambodia and murdered MILLIONS, and Laos promptly fell too - THE DOMINO THEORY WAS CORRECT. 100 million people in the region suffered under socialism for decades ever since - 65 million in Vietnam alone!
  • A similar regional bloodbath and descent into jihadist tyranny in the Middle East would follow the collapse of the nascent democracy in Iraq. That's why we mustn't act like pussies and abandon the Iraqis or the region.
Bottom-line: If we want to transform Iraq into a democracy and an ally in the GWOT, then we mustn't abandon them - CERTAINLY NOT NOW.

MEXICO EXTRADITES DRUG CARTEL BOSS TO US

It looks like Felipe Calderon is improving more and more over his predeccessor, Vicente Fox. He's handed over a drug runner to the US:
Mexico has extradited a purported drug cartel boss and three other alleged major traffickers to the United States, a move that Washington on Saturday called "unprecedented" in the cross-border fight against organized crime.

Osiel Cardenas, the alleged Gulf cartel leader who was believed to still be running his gang from jail in Mexico, was sent north Friday along with 13 others wanted by U.S. authorities after their appeals against extradition ran out, the office of Mexico's attorney general said.

U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales praised Mexican President Felipe Calderon on Saturday for the extradition, saying the U.S. had never before received from Mexico such a large number of drug suspects and others wanted for prosecution in the United States.

"The actions overnight by the Mexican government are unprecedented in their scope and importance," Gonzales said in a statement released Saturday.
There's still a lot more that Calderon needs to do to prove that he's bettering his predecessor. But for now, this is certainly a good step.

WHO'S THE MOST POWERFUL WOMAN NAMED HILLARY?

IT AIN'T RODHAM CLINTON. It's Hilary Pennington - who has $60 BILLION to give away!

(YEAH, she spells it with one "l"!)

I pledge to do whatever I can to make sure Pennington STAYS the most powerful Hillary in the world, too!

HOW TO PREVENT ANY AND ALL PHONIES FROM BEING ELECTED PRESIDENT
I propose a constitutional amendment banning any and all persons otherwise qualified to become president from running or serving if they have ever had cosmetic surgery to their face. Like Kerry and Edwards and Hillary. And Pelosi.

I feel that if someone won't show their real face - its wrinkles and sags and warts - to the electorate, that then they don't have the basic honesty or guts to be a good president. (Coloring hair is okay, though.)

GREAT ANALYSIS OF: "the political opportunistic hysterics of today's Democratic Party "

Dr. Pat Santy on the doves who control the Leftist Democrat:
... they continue to intellectually approach the complete moral and intellectual bankruptcy of the leftist base they pander to, [so] we will have the continuing pleasure of watching these moral pygmies, currently even more intoxicated with power because they have a majority in Congress, as they actively undermine (all with the help of their media propaganda wing) any and all American interests around the world; impede and vilify US military actions (while saying they "support" the troops), and generally behave as prototypical leftists are wont to do--all, of course, in the name of "peace".

NASRALLAH'S LATEST RANT PROVES ANY SIGN OF WEAKNESS OR DIVISION AIDS THE ENEMY
BBC:
Hezbollah head Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah has welcomed the resignation of Israeli army chief Lt-Gen Dan Halutz in the wake of the two sides' summer conflict. Sheikh Nasrallah told his movement's al-Manar TV in Lebanon: "Any of them that don't resign will be forced out."

Gen Halutz said he was taking responsibility for the failures of the Israeli military campaign. Hezbollah's capture of two Israeli soldiers in July, and killing of eight others, sparked 34 days of fighting. A UN-brokered truce ended the conflict, in which more than 1,200 people died. ...n a three-hour interview broadcast live, Sheikh Nasrallah told al-Manar he had been "happy" when he heard of Gen Halutz' resignation.
By any rational measure Israel won the war; sure, it did not attain all of its goals, but it thrashed the enemy - who attained NONE of its goals... except perhaps a weird emotional edge, one which only suicidally inclined genocidal maniacs like jihadists can attain - as if they glory in defeat. (ASIDE: Egypt still celebrates the Yom Kippur War as a great victory even though the FACT is they lost!) BOTTOM LINE: Hizballah has not lost its resolve, yet. And wars only end when the enemy does lose their resolve.

This is why the UN shouldn't have intervened on behalf of Hizballah; the world would be safer if it let Israel do WHATEVER it takes, and lets Israel do it for as long as it takes - n order to CRUSH the maniacs of Hizballah.

In the same radio appearance Nasrallah said this - an OVERT THREAT against the democratically elected government of Lebanon:
In a separate development, Nasrallah promised Friday evening that his opposition alliance would intensify its campaign to bring down the government, pledging to mount an "effective" action in the coming days. Nasrallah told al-Manar that Hizbullah's consultations with its allies were drawing to a close and they would release a statement shortly that spelled out the steps to be taken. "I believe this action will be effective, very important and very big," he said. He would not divulge the plan but urged all Lebanese to support it.
I also believe WE should take an effective and very important and very big action: we should assassinate Nasrallah.

PELOSI AND THE SOCIALISTS

MUST READ COLUMN (RMN/via RCP). EXCERPT:
With the Democrats back in power in Congress and with the 2008 election campaign already upon us, you'll be hearing much more about "income inequality." This is a major issue for "progressives" (when you hear that word, think "socialists") like Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. ...

Individual incomes are determined objectively in the marketplace. When politicians or labor unions don't like the results, they meddle in people's lives and businesses in pursuit of power while invoking the name of "social justice," today's name for egalitarianism. ...[But] redistribution of income and wealth - without regard for talent and productivity - can destroy a society economically.
They tell you that they're gonna tax the other guy and give it to you. In fact they're gonna just muck up the whole dang economy.

UPDATE: Today, we're headed in the RIGHT dirction; a new direction - (one that takes us to the LEFT) will - as Pastorius posted last week, and as LMC said in the comments - take us right down the tubes!

EVIDENCE MOUNTING: THAI NEW YEAR'S BOMBINGS WERE WORK OF JIHADISTS

THE AGE (OZ): Bangkok bombings the work of JI
THAI intelligence agencies say operatives of the regional terror network Jemaah Islamiah were directly involved in the New Year's Eve bombings in the Thai capital that left three dead and 40wounded. In reports seen by The Weekend Australian, the agencies say a key JI leader in Thailand's southern Narathiwat province was directly involved in the planning of the operation. The link contradicts earlier comments by military-installed Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont who said the bombings appeared to be unrelated to the violence in the south, which has claimed more than 1800 lives since early 2004.
The junta was led by a MUSLIM, who immediately began to appease the jihadists in Thailand's south. In return they got bombed and have suffered from a continuous terror spree in the South. (NO SURPRISE HERE: APPEASEMENT ONLY REWARDS/ENCOURAGES THE ENEMY!)

And then, the junta had the freakin' audacity to blame the bombings on the man they overthrew. WHAT SCUM. Stupid, cowardly Leftist scum. (YEAH LEFTIST: another idiotic thing the junta did after seizing power was to try to control the markets - which immediately plunged as a result - forcing them to back track).

I think the Thai people should take to the streets and stage a little REVOLUTION, and OUST the junta and then re-install their popularly elected PM.

GENOCIDAL IMAM ONCE PREACHED IN PEORIA

Remember this story, "Undercover at the Mosques," and these videos? I posted the story here in "Not To Worry. It Can't Be Happening Here." Now comes on January 18, 2007, this report from Fox News, via Jihad Watch. Excerpt:
NEW YORK — A New Jersey-born Muslim cleric with links to a suspected Al Qaeda operative who surfaced at a college not far from the cleric's Peoria, Ill., mosque the day before the Sept. 11 attacks has found a new home.

The imam now is spewing his message of hate to a growing group of followers at a mosque in Birmingham, England. His target: the United States, the United Kingdom, Christians and Jews.

Abu Usamah at-Thahabi, who preached at the Islamic Center of Peoria in 2001, is the subject of a British news documentary that revealed Monday how he regularly exhorts worshippers at the Green Lane Masjid, or mosque, in Birmingham to hate Westerners...

ORCHESTRATED FUSS, INTENDED TO DEMONIZE HEBRON'S JEWISH COMMUNITY
The spokesman for the Hebron Jewish community talks about some orchestrated fuss that's come up, that may be intended to divert attention from Olmert and Peretz's woes, but is certainly the concoction of a vicious left-wing media intent on demonization.

NEGEV POLICE NEGLECTING DUTIES, ENABLING BEDUIN THIEVES TO STEAL
According to this Jerusalem Post editorial, which relates to the case of Shai Dromi:
No Negev farmer is exempt from the reign of terror imposed by Beduin gangs. The police do little, and rarely arrive even when summoned. Insurance companies will have nothing to do with the beleaguered farmers. Their only alternative is to pay exorbitant "protection" money to Beduin "guards" to prevent them from absconding with equipment, livestock and produce. This situation, as The Jerusalem Post warned in these very columns last week, is plainly untenable.

Dromi's case was a disaster waiting to happen, as noted in that same prescient editorial on January 10 - several days before the incident at Dromi's ranch. We titled that article "The Wild South" - the prevalent appellation for the lawless Negev, where no entrepreneur, homeowner or driver is safe from Beduin gangs.
Now I see. This is what happens when you have incompetants in charge. A call for a more responsible police chief, to say nothing of a new staff shuffle, is what's needed now.

SOME EVANGELICALS EMBRACE GLOBAL WARMING
I can't begin to tell you how irritated I was when I came across this article, "Scientists, Evangelicals Battling Global Warming". It seems that a bunch of supposed Evangelical Leaders want to join with Scientists in fighting global warming. My problem with that is you would have to believe in global warming first in order to agree to work on fighting it.

Even though the Drive By Media would like you to believe that everyone believes in global warming many logical people (mostly conservatives) don't buy into the Global Warming Myth. So it was a huge disappointment to see some of my fellow Evangelicals jumping on the global warming bandwagon.

I went to this link to see who all was on the list. My biggest shock and disappointment was to see Bill Hybels name on there. I used to love Bill Hybels but he seems to have gone the Rick Warren way. Rick Warren's name was on there too but that did not surprise me. This is the 3rd issue in recent months to send up red flags with me. I posted about both the Syria trip and having Obama speak at his AIDS conference here. It saddens me when people who should know better buy into the politically correct agenda of the day.

CHAVEZ HAS LEGALLY BECOME A DICTATOR

BBC:
Venezuela's National Assembly has given initial approval to a bill granting President Hugo Chavez the power to rule by decree for 18 months. Mr Chavez said he wants to approve "revolutionary laws" to enact sweeping political, economic and social changes.

He has said he wants to nationalise key sectors of the economy and scrap limits on the terms a president can serve.
CHAVEZ IS A DANGEROUS TYRANT.
NOT JUST FOR VENEZUELANS, NOT JUST REGIONALLY, EITHER.

PAKISTAN HUNTING WOUNDED AL QAEDA
TURKISH PRESS/AFP:
Pakistani security forces on Wednesday hunted for 10 injured militants including a senior Al-Qaeda member after an army air strike destroyed a training camp near the Afghan border.
I think they're on the trail of a BIG ONE! More HERE.

SARKO SURGING; SEGO TANKING
INTERESTING NEWS ABOUT THE FRENCH ELECTION. Check this out HERE, TOO. AND THIS! And then there's this item. Why is this happening: the Segolene honeymoon is over; now truth is coming out.

(BTW: The same thing will happen to Hillary and Barack Hussein Obama, too.)

DOMESTIC SLAVERY IN MCLEAN, VIRGINIA?
See this from the Washington Post and this from the ACLU's web site for information about a civil lawsuit filed against a Kuwaiti diplomat and his wife.

A local channel here used to have the video report at the channel's web site, but as far as I can now tell, the video is no longer available just a day later--even though I saw the video on the news last night.

REPUBLICAN OPTIONS FOR 2008
I did an extensive post at my blog on why I vehemently despise John McCain and don't want him to get the Republican nomination in 2008. So who would I support?

First of all, I wish we had better choices. I am a pro-life, conservative Christian and I wish we had someone more Reaganesque. We don't, so here is my take. Brownback and Huckabee are conservative enough for me but not presidential IMHO. Brownback proved my point recently by not supporting Bush's troop surge. Mitt Romney is trying to cater to conservatives but I have a contact in Massachusetts that knows Romney's true colors and they aren't those of a genuine conservative.

So who does that leave? If forced to pick right now my 2 choices would come down to Newt and Giuliani. I'm concerned about some of Newt's baggage but he is a genuine conservative and I think he has what it takes to be president. As for Giuliani, I love this man. If he was more conservative on social issues he would be my first choice by a long shot. He is still an option for me though because it boils down to 2 issues, the War on Terror and Supreme Court Justices. I think he would be stellar on both of these.

It will be interesting to see how it all plays out but my mantra as always is, "Anyone but McCain!!!"

NOBEL PRIZE WINNERS LIVE LONGER
I am not sure of the logic in the report below. Have they REALLY ruled out the possibility that people who are brighter also tend to be healthier? Evidence that they are goes back to the 1920s -- with the studies by Terman & Oden. And there has been plenty of recent evidence to that effect as well. See for instance findings by Martin, Fitzmaurice, Kindlon & Buka in "The Journal of Epidemiology & Community Health" of 2004, vol. 58, pp. 674-679. The full report is here (PDF) and a summary is here. The reason for such findings would be obvious if it were not for politics: High IQ signifies good brain function but the brain is part of the body so good brain function tends to go with good body functioning generally. Note that I say TENDS. There are exceptions to every rule.

"British researchers have found that winning a Nobel Prize can add nearly two years to your life because the award boosts social status. Scientists at Warwick University in central Britain studied the lifespans of 524 chemists and physicists who either won a Nobel Prize or had been nominated for the honour between 1901 and 1950. While nominees were found to live to an average age of 75.8 years, the 135 scientists who actually won a Nobel Prize survived for another 1.4 years on top of that.

The researchers found that the prize money won by Nobel laureates had no effect on how long they lived, suggesting that the extra years were solely due to boosted social status.

The research was part of an investigation into the way social position affects well being and lifespan. Economist Professor Andrew Oswald, who led the team, said: "Status seems to work a kind of health-giving magic. Once we do the statistical corrections, walking across that platform in Stockholm apparently adds about two years to a scientist's lifespan. How status does this, we just don't know."

ANOTHER MISLEADING ANALYSIS OF CONSERVATISM BY LEFTIST PSYCHOLOGISTS
Psychology Today has just put out a big article on the psychology of politics. It purports to explain why people hew to the Left or the Right.

It bases its conclusions, however, on research that has no scholarly worth whatsoever. The two main pieces of research it relies on to support the differentiations it proposes are by Jost et al and Block et al. Both pieces of research are within my area of academic specialization so the gaping flaws in both are more evident to me than they might be to others. I have previously pointed out how intellectually discreditable both studies are. See here and here. I was actually one of the authors whose research the Jost et al. article purported to summarize!

Jost et al. showed vividly the usual Leftist talent for ignoring large bodies of evidence that did not suit their preconceptions. Their article must in fact rate as one of the most dishonest meta-analyses ever reported. They were very clearly guilty of "motivated cognition" -- exactly what they accused conservatives of. Leftist projection and leftist denial do usually go hand in hand.

Michelle Malkin and Jim Lindgren note the absurd "sampling" in the Block study. It seems unlikely that there were any actual conservatives among the individuals studied! That is not the first time Leftist psychologists have perpetrated such an absurdity in their mendacious claims to "explain" conservatism, however. See, for instance, here.

Given the very dubious basis of the generalizations offered in the Psychology Today article, the generalizations offered by the article should detain no-one. Whether any of the statements made are true is simply unknown.

Sadly, many in the blogosphere have assumed that there is some respectable evidential basis for the article. Cinnamon Stillwell and Fausta sum up some of the blogospheric reactions.

"SISSY" NOW A WICKED WORD

The Leftist attack-site Media Matters is targeting conservative radio personality Michael Smerconish because he uses the word "sissy" (short for "sister") to describe various policies he disagrees with. The term is of course derogatory and implies a lack of manliness so I guess you are not now allowed to question anyone's manliness.

That seems rather strange given the feminist claim that sex-roles are all obsolete anyway. Shouldn't it be a compliment to be a "sissy" among todays's androgynous Leftists? Feminists have been proclaiming androgyny as the ideal for many years now. (See here.)

The attack-site gives various addresses that you can use to protest against Smercoinsh. It might be rather fun if readers here used the same addresses to support him!

Reliapundit adds: When you use the above featured derogatory word correctly it's a SISSY FIT.

THE INFIDEL BLOGGERS ALLIANCE RADIO SHOW

And now, coming to you live from a Stealth Bomber circling above Mecca, it's the Infidel Bloggers Alliance Radio Show...

Tonight, Fu2rman and I interviewed Craig Baker, the Texas man who responded to the new Mosque next door by staging a "Great American Pig Race and Pork Barbecue" every Friday night during prayer services. He's the man. A true American Infidel Hero. We also talked with Imam Ali Allah Akbar Bibi, who proclaimed death to the Infidels and Jews, condemned Lesbians, and made a general ass of himself. And finally, we spoke with Horst Scheinhaxe, the leader of the Council of American-Nazi Relations. (Check out that website. It is something else.) Horst told us about the plague of Naziphobia which is, according to him, sweeping the nation. Apparently, some evil right-winger threw a copy of Mein Kampf in the toilet at New York University. The horror.
