Philippines and Muslim rebels agree peace deal 

The new autonomous region is to be named Bangsamoro, after the Moros living there

The Philippine government has reached a framework peace agreement with the country's largest Muslim rebel group, President Benigno Aquino says. 

The deal follows long negotiations with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) to end a 40-year conflict that has cost more than 120,000 lives. It provides for a new autonomous region in the south, where Muslims are a majority in a mainly Catholic country. The MILF is "very happy" with the deal, a spokesman was quoted as saying. 

The agreement was reached after talks in Malaysia and is expected to be signed formally on 15 October in the Philippine capital, Manila. 

BBC ANALYSIS: 

Both sides in these long-running negotiations knew there needed to be serious compromises. The government has had to concede that many Muslims living in the southern Philippines believe the existing autonomous region is too small and its leaders do not have enough real power. The rebels have had to back down too - their initial demand had been for an entirely separate state. 

Both sides also know there's huge pressure to get this agreement right. In 2008, a deal was about to be signed when local Christian groups complained they had not been fully consulted, and the Supreme Court blocked the agreement. Within weeks conflict had resumed, and hundreds of thousands of civilians were forced to flee their homes. This time, widespread consultations and a public vote have been built into the process, in the hope that finally a lasting peace can be reached.  

A copy of the framework deal says the parties commit to reaching a "comprehensive deal" by the end of the year. "This framework agreement paves the way for a final and enduring peace in Mindanao," President Aquino said in a speech to announce the deal, referring to the main southern region. But he added: "The work does not end here. There are still details that both sides must hammer out." 

Correspondents say the agreement marks a major breakthrough, though previous peace efforts have broken down and negotiations with the MILF over the last 15 years were interrupted by violence. The Philippine government's chief negotiator Marvic Leonen told the BBC that the new peace deal has more political support than previous agreements, after the negotiation panel held more than 100 consultations with Muslims, Christians, and local and regional governments. The MILF's vice chairman for political affairs Ghazali Jaafar told AFP news agency: "We are very happy. We thank the president for this. 

It is hoped that the agreement could be implemented on the ground by the end of President Aquino's term in 2016. 

President Aquino said the new autonomous region would be named Bangsamoro, after the Moros living there. "This framework agreement is about rising above our prejudices," the president said. "It is about casting aside the distrust and myopia that has the plagued efforts of the past."

• It also provides for the MILF to "undertake a graduated program for decommissioning of its forces" and says both sides would work for "reduction and control of firearms and the disbandment of private armies and other armed groups". 
• Law enforcement would be transferred from the army to the Bangsamoro police in a "phased and gradual manner". 

The MILF, created after a split with another rebel group in 1977, had earlier dropped its demand for an independent Muslim state.

A MOVIE THAT WOULDN'T BE MADE TODAY

In 1991, Sally Field starred in Not Without My Daughter, based on the life of Betty Mahmoody, who was lucky to smuggle her daughter and herself out of Iran to flee her abusive Muslim husband, and even the Islamofascist regime itself. Here's a speech given by Betty (via Atlas Shrugs):

"From the first day that he told me I couldn't come back, I considered myself a hostage," Betty writes. Mahmoody's husband separated her from her daughter for weeks on end. He beat her and threatened to kill her if she left the house or tried to call for help. One afternoon, Betty Mahmoody managed to slip away from the house unnoticed and went to the embassy for help. "When I told them my situation they said that from the moment I married an Iranian, I became a citizen under Iranian law. There was nothing they could do for me."

Several people sympathized with Betty's situation and offered advice. One person told Betty that an escape would be much easier if she left her daughter in Iran. Mahmoody never considered the option. She would not leave without Mahtob. Months went by and Betty Mahmoody watched her daughter grow more despondent and her husband's mood swings more severe. She continued to search desperately for a way out. Finally, someone agreed to help.

The escape route was risky and treacherous. Betty and Mahtob were driven at night from Teheran to the desolate mountains in the north. Once there, they hid out in a farmer's barn waiting for the most terrifying part of their escape. They now had to cross the ice and snow-covered mountains that border Iran and Turkey. "We had to walk up some of the mountains because they were too steep for the horses," Mahmoody explains. "And I was so exhausted. When we started to go up the last mountains my legs just gave out. I was paralyzed from the waist down." The guides dragged Betty and carried Mahtob the final yards to their freedom.

Betty Mahmoody's story of fortitude during her two years in Iran is awe-inspiring. Betty and her daughter are happy now, although Mahtob still suffers some effects from the terrifying ordeal. They live in the U.S. under assumed names as Betty's husband still threatens to get Mahtob back. However, Betty is no longer afraid of him. "We have so much freedom. I want people to read this story and appreciate their freedom. When they see the American flag or the Statue of Liberty, I want those things to mean to everyone what they now mean to me."

And everybody who believes in freedom should take a look at the film and hear what Betty herself has to say. The film made of her experiences is the kind of thing today's Hollywood is unlikely to make. Come to think of it, there's little chance they'd be willing to make movies like the 10 Commandments and Exodus either.

Speaking of fiction, an inconvenient videotape resurfaced the day before the debate. It was from 2007 in Virginia: Senator Barack Obama, presidential stars in his eyes, speaking to a largely black audience of religious leaders and inciting racial animus.  

 To be generous, Obama’s performance is disgusting. Cynically adopting the black dialect of the American South, a dialect utterly alien to him, he demagogues against Washington’s supposedly selective waivers of the Stafford Act — legislation that requires communities hit by disasters to match 10 percent of federal aid.  

They waived it for 9/11, he tells the crowd, and they waived it when Hurricane Andrew hit Florida: Those communities were allowed to keep their one dollar for every ten federal dollars. But when he comes to Hurricane Katrina, which devastated the largely African-American population of New Orleans, Obama implies that Congress refused the waiver: 

“What’s happenin’ down in New O’leans? Where’s yo’ dollar? Where’s yo’ Stafford Act money? . . . Tells me that somehow the people down in New O’leans they don’t care about as much.”  

In fact, ten days before Obama gave that speech, Congress had waived the Stafford Act requirement for Katrina. He was well aware of that fact, too. After all, he was one of only 14 senators to vote against the waiver.  

He lied about what happened in order to foment racial resentment — an atmosphere that he calculated would help his presidential bid.

The police in France conducted an anti-terror raid, but the prosecution may be trying to use a trick to downplay the seriousness of the case:

PARIS (AP) - Police carried out raids across France on Saturday after DNA on a grenade that exploded last month at a kosher grocery store led them to a suspected jihadist cell of young Frenchmen recently converted to Islam.

The man whose DNA was identified, named by police as Jeremy Sydney, was killed by police after he opened fire on them, slightly wounding three officers in the eastern city of Strasbourg. Officials said he had been under surveillance since last spring - around the time a French Islamic went on a shooting rampage against a Jewish school and French soldiers, killing seven people.

Ten other suspects, aged between 19 and 25, were arrested across the country on Saturday. One man was carrying a loaded gun, and police found weapons, cash and a list of Paris-area Israeli associations during the raids.

Paris prosecutor Francois Molins said all the arrested suspects were French and recent converts to Islam.

Not so fast. How do we know that some of the culprits here aren't of Arabic descent and adherents to Islam much longer than those they say are converts? The reason I take issue with this is because I suspect this is some kind of a trick to exonerate the Religion of Rape by making it sound as though these are just "misunderstanders" which is offensive and trivializes the deeper details involving the Koran's verses.

Four of the men involved in the raid had written wills.

"You can imagine what their other plans could have been," Eric Voulleminot, a counterterrorism official, said at a news conference with Molins.

The prosecutor described 33-year-old Sydney, sentenced in 2008 to two years in prison for drug trafficking, as a "delinquent who converted to radical Islam." He said others in the cell indicated they wanted to return to "the land of jihad."

A statement from President Francois Hollande praised the police for the raids and said the state would continue to "protect the French against all terrorist threats."

Last month's firebombing of the grocery, in a Jewish neighborhood outside Paris, happened on Sept. 19, the same day a French satirical paper published crude caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad. Anti-Western protests were also growing at the time against an anti-Islam film. One person was slightly injured, but the attack came after a summer of what residents described as growing anti-Semitic threats.

France, which has the largest Muslim population in Europe, is trying to contain the spread of a radical Islam hostile to Western influences.

The prosecutor was careful not to draw direct links between Saturday's arrests and Mohamed Merah, a young Frenchman of Algerian descent who died in a shootout with police in March after the killings in the south of France. That attack terrorized the French Jewish community, which has since ramped up security in many parts of the country.

Merah had studied at an Islamist paramilitary camp in Pakistan and claimed ties to al-Qaida. Molins said officials did not believe the men arrested Saturday had trained abroad, but cautioned that the investigation was ongoing.

A highly decorated Army lieutenant colonel says he was essentially blacklisted by his superiors after more than 50 Muslim groups complained about a course he taught on radical Islam. Now he is fighting to get his career back. 

As previously reported by The Blaze, Lt. Col. Matthew Dooley, a West Point graduate and decorated combat veteran, was an instructor at the Joint Forces Staff College at the National Defense University, where he was reportedly popular among students and fellow staff members, FoxNews.com reports. 

That all changed when Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, slammed Dooley and his “Perspectives on Islam and Islamic Radicalism” course during a Pentagon press conference in May, calling his teachings unprofessional and “against our values.” 

He was later given a negative Officer Evaluation Report (OER), which was unusual given the fact that Dooley had passed the evaluations with flying colors the previous five years. Dooley says a bad OER is like being blacklisted in military circles. 

“This was a very heavy-handed approach from the very top,” Richard Thompson, president of the Thomas More Law Center, told Fox News. His organization is now representing Dooley in the case. To read one of their latest press releases on the case, click here. 

“He had a brilliant career ahead of him,” Thompson added. “Now, he has been flagged…“They [superiors] ordered a negative evaluation. He will never have the opportunity for promotion unless this is overturned.”

In September, the household survey showed that the number of people who said they were unemployed fell by 456,000. The number of people who said they were working increased even more — by 873,000. 

Unlike the payroll survey, the household survey captures farm workers, the self-employed and people who work for new companies. It also does a better job of capturing hiring by small businesses. 

But the household survey is more volatile from month to month. The Labor Department surveys just 60,000 households, a small fraction of the more than 100 million U.S. households.

The U.S. unemployment rate plunged to 7.8 per cent, the lowest since January 2009, as the number of Americans saying they have jobs increased by more than 870,000 in September from the previous month. 

All year, the unemployment rate has been stuck in a range of 8.3 per cent to 8.1 per cent, as it was in August. Unlike recent dips in the unemployment rate, the September drop was the result of more people telling a government survey of households that they have jobs. Last month, the jobless rate dropped because thousands of people gave up looking for work. 

The improvement in the unemployment rate could be a boon for President Barack Obama, who is trying to regain his campaign footing after a lacklustre performance in this week’s first of three presidential debates.

A New York police detective shot and killed an unarmed man, whose hands, a witness said, were on the steering wheel of his Honda, after he had been pulled over early Thursday for cutting off two police trucks on the Grand Central Parkway in Queens, the authorities said.

The shooting, which occurred at 5:15 a.m., was the latest in a series of episodes in which police officers fatally shot or wounded civilians. While the Police Department had explanations in the other instances, it could not immediately provide one for the shooting on Thursday.

The detective, Hassan Hamdy, 39, a 14-year veteran assigned to the Emergency Service Unit, fired one bullet through an open window of the car, which his squad had just pulled over with the help of a second police vehicle. The bullet struck the driver, Noel Polanco, 22, in the abdomen. He was declared dead less than an hour later at New York Hospital Queens....

... A passenger in Mr. Polanco’s car, Diane Deferrari, said in a phone interview Thursday night that just before pulling the car over, officers appeared irate that Mr. Polanco had cut them off. She said that one of the officers — but not Detective Hamdy — stuck up his middle finger and was screaming obscenities from one of the moving police trucks.

“As soon as we stopped — they were rushing the car,” Ms. Deferrari said. “It was like an army.”

She said a group of officers swarmed the car, yelling for the three people in Mr. Polanco’s car to put their hands up. Mr. Polanco, whose hands were still on the steering wheel, had no time to comply, Ms. Deferrari said. At that instant, a shot rang out, and Mr. Polanco gasped for air, she said.

“I felt the powder in my face,” she said.

Officers then dragged Mr. Polanco from the car and onto the highway, where traffic was snarled, as early-morning commuters slowed to look, she said.

“This is all a case of road rage on behalf of the N.Y.P.D. — that’s all this is,” she said. ...

FRENCH GOVERNMENT DELEGITIMIZING JERUSALEM

By doing business with the PA in the "east":

France’s most populous administrative zone, encompassing the capital Paris, has signed a cooperation agreement with the Palestinian district of Jerusalem, a move organizers say is designed to send a “political message” of solidarity with the Palestinians and their aspirations for a future capital in the city.

The French region described the agreement as the “first of its kind.”

The decision is a blow to Israel’s claim that the eastern sector is part of its united capital. A spokesman for Israel’s Foreign Ministry said east Jerusalem “does not exist” as a separate entity and that the French council was “living in a make-believe world.”

The Regional Council of Île-de-France voted September 28 in favor of a “decentralized cooperation agreement” with the Palestinian Authority (PA) district of Jerusalem, making it “the first French community to sign an agreement of cooperation with the Arab part of the holy city,” a statement on the council’s website read. The agreement is to be officially signed during the month of October.

Israel extended its sovereignty to the entire city of Jerusalem following the Six-Day War of 1967, and does not recognize the PA’s Jerusalem district, which incorporates some 400,000 Palestinian residents in Jerusalem and its outskirts.

Nor should they recognize such a thing, because it doesn't exist. What the French government is doing here is offensive, and a waste of their own public's taxpayers money. Now you can see where any taxes the Hollande government might rob the public of might go - to delegitimization efforts against other countries.

A DARK DAY FOR LIBERTY

Today was a dark day in American history, but you'd never know because the media is complicit in this sharia enforcement.  I had a front-row seat to witness the rape of the First Amendment in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, Judge Rosemary Collyer, presiding. Robert Spencer and I went down to Washington as defenders of America's most fundamental and unalienable right. And in return, we had the sad misfortune of watching a U.S. District Court Judge discard, denigrate, downplay and dismiss our most basic law of the land: the freedom of speech. 

The Judge went out of her way to validate and substantiate the ridiculous premise of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), that the AFDI pro-freedom ad would endanger passengers on the D.C. subways and thus must not be posted, or at least delayed until some (fanciful) time when the jihad threat would subside. It was painful to watch Judge Collyer almost physically wrestling with the First Amendment, trying to tackle it and pin it to the floor. But the First Amendment was much too wily for the wrongheaded, utterly subjective, and clueless judge. 

... The ad is not hate speech, it's love speech. It's love of life speech. The ad speaks to the defense of freedom and individual rights for all. There's nothing hateful about it. 9/11 was hate. 3/11 in Madrid was hate. 7/7 in London was hate. The Fort Hood jihadi was hate. The Christmas balls bomber was hate. The Fort Dix Six was hate. Pushing back against such hate is not hate.
