"I Want To Express My Grave Concerns About The Administration's Response"

I'm with Senator DeMint when he expresses "grave" concerns about our current Presidential Administration.

In this video, Senator DeMint reads into the Congressional record the step by step events that took place which led the Honduran military to depose President Zelaya.

The one thing I had wondered about was whether the Honduran Supreme Court and Congress had overstepped their power in their hurry to get Zelaya out of office, because of the threat he posed as the result of his using a mob to break into a military installation. In other words, I was concerned that they had skipped the Impeachment process, in their haste to get rid of what they saw as a potentially violent threat to the Constitutional processes of the government.

It turns out, however, that even before Zelaya had resorted to such "mob rule" methods, he was in violation of Article 238 in the Honduran Constitution which states that, "Any President who even proposes an extension of his tenure in office shall immediately cease performing the functions of his post."

In other words, the only thing to wonder about with regard to the Honduran situation is, why did it take so long for the Judiciary and the Legislative branches to order Zelaya removed from office.

You have to watch this video. It is a devastating denunciation of President Barack Obama.

In the end you will be left knowing that the Honduran government did the right thing,

and,

you will also be left podering one ominous (grave?) question,

Is it, in fact, true that Barack Obama is attempting to help Zelaya perform a coup against the Honduran Constitution?

DOV WEISSGLAS CAUSES TROUBLE AGAIN

I'd had this sitting around for a couple days as I didn't have time to work on it. In the Jerusalem Post, Dov Weissglass is quoted in an act of trying to cause problems for Israel:

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu is making a mistake in not explicitly endorsing the road map, with its monitored sequence of phases toward Palestinian statehood, and risks placing Israel in a situation where the Obama administration instead seeks to impose a permanent accord that would be immensely problematic for Israel, Dov Weissglas, former prime minister Ariel Sharon's bureau chief, has warned The Jerusalem Post.

Amid continued speculation that President Barack Obama is about to unveil a comprehensive Middle East peace plan, Weissglas asked: "If the Americans say there's no road map, and let's say instead they convene a peace conference in Washington in the presence of the Saudis and the Kuwaitis and the Qataris, all singing Israel's praises, to discuss final-status issues, what will Netanyahu say then?"

Had Netanyahu accepted the road map from the moment he formed his coalition, "the international community would have been reassured," Weissglas said. "The Americans would not be prodding us on the issue of the settlement freeze. The Palestinians would have resumed the negotiating process."

Unfortunately, however, Weissglas went on, Netanyahu came into office "with very negative baggage" and "had to be dragged" toward accepting the inevitable two-state vision.

Weissglass should just shut his big mouth. He's as bad as his former boss. If Netanyahu accepted things the way he says, there would be a "settlement freeze". It'd all be awful. But Weissglas clearly does not care, does he?

DC COMICS BECOMES DHIMMI COMICS

Coming back from a vacation I was on, I've made quite a discovery indeed: DC is going to allow for a team-up between its superheroes and those of the Kuwaiti-based Teshkeel that go by the Islamic religion. The UK Guardian published the following article:

They are superheroes battling injustice and fighting evil the Islamic way, and they are teaming up with some of the west's biggest comic book icons. Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman are among those joining forces with The 99, who personify the 99 attributes of Allah, according to Islamic tradition.

And I'm guessing that, in the official books published in Kuwait, the "heroes" themselves personify such traits as jihad, conquering other countries and dhimmifying those they consider infidels, condone such quranic verses as "Therefore, when ye meet the Unbelievers (in fight), smite at their necks..." (Qur'an 47:4), and even verses like “Forbidden to you are ... married women, except those whom you own as slaves” (Sura 4:23-24). That's exactly why to see these DC superheroes meeting up with a bunch whose religion and beliefs go entirely against their own will be one of the most implausible ever seen.

What will unfold on the pages of the collaboration between DC Comics in the US and Teshkeel Comics in Kuwait is yet to be seen, but the appearance of The 99 – who already appear in comics in the Muslim world – alongside archetypal American heroes would have been unlikely during the Bush years. DC Comics' president and publisher, Paul Levitz, believes the cross-cultural project is unprecedented.

Now that is hilarious. They make it sound as though most American comics actually did support the war against terror and uphold patriotic values. Sorry, but it was anything but that, and even now, they can't be counted on to offer a fully convincing portrait of superheroes fighting terrorism, even allegorically.

That aside, it's interesting to note that company president Paul Levitz has approved of this.

He said: "It is a long-standing tradition for characters to meet others in the fictional world, and over the years a lot of the superheroes have been translated into Arabic, taking on ethnic elements. But this is a nice step forward. The most difficult creative test is when you are working with the least precedent and when you're trying to reach an audience that has a different cultural bias and different interests."

It sounds like he may be subtly attacking the sensible audience if they're offended by this teaming of heroes who under better editorial would have more common sense with so-called heroes who could condone atrocities like jihadic violence and racism. If anything, this tells that Paul Levitz is clearly a bad lot himself. He was of course responsible for handing Dan DiDio the keys to the kingdom, and did nothing to stop Identity Crisis from being crafted. Once, he was a great writer, with plenty of Earth-2 and Legion of Super-Heroes stories to his credit. Now, it's clear that power and greed have consumed him, and I'm going to have to look upon him in disgrace.

Unlike their western counterparts The 99 do not wear disguises, unless you count the burka-wearing Batina The Hidden, nor are they outsiders with secret identities. They are ordinary people who develop extraordinary abilities after coming into contact with mystical gems infused with power and wisdom.

Only Batina, one of five females, is fully veiled, and although characters pray or read the Qur'an, they are meant to appeal to children of all faiths.

No kidding. Sorry, I don't buy that for a second.

But who are some of the people behind this particular "project"?

The team behind The 99 includes comic book stalwarts Fabian Nicieza, Stuart Moore, June Brigman, Dan Panosian, and John McCrea, who have all worked at DC Comics and Marvel.

And now I consider Nicieza and company as bad as leftist writers like Warren Ellis and Mark Millar, possibly even worse. Nicieza is clearly another of many burned-out comic writers who's naive to boot.

About 23 heroes have been launched and there are more to come.

Mutawa said: "We're building the brand slowly.

"It's difficult to have any kind of reading or comic book culture here because there is a lot of stuff that doesn't come in or it's censored. Certain storylines don't work and some stuff, like magic, just isn't allowed."

Really? In that case, how do they expect to craft anything fun to read? It does suggest though, that the Islamists behind The 99 despise Tales of the Arabian Nights, where plenty of magic is involved!

This is another reason why I find the big two in their current incarnation so alienating today, because they're willing to insult their own properties by involving them with others whose ideologies go completely against their own.

This one-  German industrial output leaps higher

Roaring auto output pushed German industrial production higher in May by the biggest margin since August 1993, official data showed Wednesday, signaling the country's deep recession might be near an end.

The economy ministry said overall output in Europe's biggest economy jumped by 3.7 percent in May from the previous month and added: "Industrial production may have passed the trough."

This is at a time, the US is celebrating the fact that The U.S. manufacturing sector shrank in June but at a slower pace than during the prior month

Yes, prejudice blinds. German unemployment declines in June from 8.2% to 8.1% after having dropped from 8.4% a month earlier. In contrast, American unemployment rose from 9.4% to 9.5% in June after having risen from 8.9% a month earlier. 

As I have previously noted, both country had 7.2% unemployment rate in December 2008.

None of this means that Germany is out of the woods. It merely means that she is bound come out of them in a much better shape than had she wasted money in ineffective "make work" projects. I wish I could say the same about the US. And the "usual suspects" are talking about a second stimulus!

Now, it might have acted by pushing abstinence and seeking ways to encourage intact families. Concerned, though, that this would have been just too Victorian and moralistic, the British government opted for a different approach: it decided to teach teenage girls how to have sex. The results were predictable(emphasis mine):

A multi-million pound initiative to reduce teenage pregnancies more than doubled the number of girls conceiving.

The Government-backed scheme tried to persuade teenage girls not to get pregnant by handing out condoms and teaching them about sex.

But research funded by the Department of Health shows that young women who attended the programme, at a cost of £2,500 each, were ’significantly’ more likely to become pregnant than those on other youth programmes who were not given contraception and sex advice.

A total of 16 per cent of those on the Young People’s Development Programme conceived compared with just 6 per cent in other programmes.

WSJ: Iran Opposition Finds New Ways to Protest; FORMER IRANIAN PRESIDENT BANISADR SAYS FRAUD WAS ORDERED BY KHAMENEI

The three top leaders of Iran's opposition joined forces on Tuesday and their supporters began a three-day national strike, signaling a resurrection of protests even as Iran's president announced to the nation that the postelection turmoil was over.

Opposition candidates Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi, joined by former President Mohamad Khatami, met to plot strategy and issued their first-ever joint statement, calling for an end to the government's arrests and what they called "savage, shocking attacks" on their advisers and supporters.

Meanwhile, hundreds of opposition supporters quietly flocked to mosques or retreated to their homes to begin an unusual form of three-day strike boycotting workplaces, banks and the baazar.

In a novel attempt to outflank government restrictions, opposition supporters alerted one another to take advantage of an Islamic tradition rarely practiced in Iran called Etekaf. It calls for a retreat from worldly activities during these three days in the month of Rajab in the Islamic calendar.

The strikes come just ahead of a protest planned for Thursday to commemorate 18 Tir, the 1999 student uprisings that led to dozens of students getting killed. "By staying away from workplace, the brave people of Iran can show they will never accept this illegitimate government," wrote an Iranian columnist in Iran on a news Web site.

M&G: Khamenei ordered Iran election fraud, says ex-president

Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, is personally behind the alleged fraud in the June 12 presidential election, former Iranian president Abolhassan Banisadr claimed in Vienna late on Monday.

"Khamenei ordered the fraud in the presidential elections and the ensuing crackdown on protestors," Banisadr said at a symposium marking the 20th anniversary of the murder of three Kurdish opposition leaders in Vienna.

"The regime is edging closer to the abyss and is holding on to power solely by means of violence and terror," said Banisadr, who was Iran's first elected president following the 1979 Islamic revolution.

The regime wanted to keep the population in a permanent state of uncertainty and fear and so systematic terror was institutionally organised and controlled by the regime and Khamenei, he added.

"They don't want Iranians to be able to even think about protests in their own homes."

Intellectuals and students were the main targets since they were regarded as the driving force behind the resistance, Banisadr continued. "Reformers and liberal pragmatists are to be wiped out."

The Swedish Model Is Failing

Sweden is often held up as the model of the Socialist state that works.

Not really true.

Sweden still sets hearts racing across Europe. The "Swedish model" might bring up thoughts of a nubile blonde rather than a strong social state, but it is in the latter incarnation that my home country stirs the passions of left-leaning Europeans. Whatever Sweden does must be right, or so reason progressive politicians and Guardian journalists – not to mention scores of Swedes. But beyond this blue-eyed vision lurks a darker reality. Sweden's conservative coalition government has stood still as the financial crisis has engulfed the country. Jobs, social services and healthcare are eroding. The Sweden Democrats – the equivalent of the BNP – are on the rise. The social state is failing. The Swedish dream is no more.

Take healthcare. Swedes do not enjoy free public care: it costs to see a GP. That is, if you manage to see one. Queues are long and scandals rack the system. Psychiatric care, the source of many such scandals, has a near-medieval penchant for authoritarianism with few European equivalents. People are locked up for months for not taking medicine, given no therapy, and spat out of the system into despair and destitution. The mentally ill die in wards and in outpatient isolation. And they do not even have charities to turn to because state-run healthcare is supposed to work: this is Sweden, after all.

Those who do enjoy Sweden's second-rate public services are lucky. Undocumented migrants, who lack a "personal number", are barred from day-to-day healthcare. Foreigners do not fit easily into a social system built on the postwar notion of the folkhem, or people's home, whose rightful inhabitants are the native Swedes. Despite the xenophobic right's lack of electoral success, Sweden is divided between those inside the system and those outside it – including the asylum seekers now deported en masse to Iraq. But migrants should be happy to be here. This is Sweden, after all.

Patient's shock at hospital waiting list in Australia

AN UNWELL woman with a family history of bowel cancer said she was shocked to learn she had at least an eight-month wait for a colonoscopy.

Maureen Watts, 63, says she has been waiting to hear back from Royal Darwin Hospital since mid-February about when she could be booked in for the procedure.

But last week, she said, she rang to check again on when they could fit her in, and that it was then she was told there was no theatre spare.

"(She) told me they're renovating or refurbishing the hospital and that they don't have a theatre ... until September," she said.

"(And then) there was a big backlog of people that they have to go through.

"I asked what can I do about it, and she said 'well, really, nothing - neither can I'."

Ms Watts - whose mother and both grandfathers all had bowel cancer - said she had been feeling unwell before seeing a RDH doctor in February, who agreed she should have a colonoscopy as well as an endoscopy.

RDH media officer Kasey Brunt said the hospital was investigating the case.

All these bigtime hotshot bloggers - from Instapundit to Hot Air and NRO and NEWSBUSTERS and DEFENSETECH - they should all do what you do: read The Astute Bloggers everyday.

They'd be better informed than they are.

CLARIFICATION: I have nothing against them all linking to the GREAT Yon - a courageous and objective reporter.

I object to them calling the Philippines a forgotten front. We consistently covered it and we linked to news items from around the world on it. We atb TAB didn't forget it. They did. They are projecting their own weakness. We take exception to that.
