ADAM WHEELER - AS I WHEELER DEALER: Ex-Harvard student accused of living a lie

He crafted an elaborate web of lies to con his way into Harvard University, authorities say, but Adam B. Wheeler wasn’t content to graduate quietly and get away with just a degree.

After two years of blending into campus life and racking up academic prizes and tens of thousands of dollars in grants and scholarships, Wheeler allegedly upped the ante: The 23-year-old senior applied for the prestigious Rhodes and Fulbright scholarships last fall using falsified credentials, including a fake transcript and work he plagiarized from a Harvard professor, said investigators.

Wheeler was indicted yesterday on charges of larceny and identity fraud, among other charges. If proven, the charges — he is also accused of falsely claiming to have attended MIT and Phillips Academy and coauthored several books — suggest a student on a fraudulent quest for advancement at all costs, and raise questions about how he nearly got away with it.

“This defendant seriously undermined the integrity of the competitive admissions process, compromised the reputation of some of the finest educators and educational institutions in the country, and cheated those who competed honestly for what he fraudulently received,’’ Middlesex District Attorney Gerard T. Leone Jr. said in a statement.

Leone also highlighted what he said was the financial toll from Wheeler’s alleged deeds: more than $45,000 in grants, scholarship, and financial aid money awarded to him “based on lies and reproductions of other people’s hard work.’’

Calls to Wheeler’s Milton, Del., home were not returned yesterday. Attempts to reach his lawyer were not successful. ...

... Those who knew Wheeler at Harvard describe him as personable, if a bit of a loner.

“I was just knocked silly by this,’’ said one Harvard professor, speaking on condition of anonymity, who likened Wheeler’s fabrications to a scenario from the film “The Talented Mr. Ripley.’’ “There’s something that’s pathological there. And it’s something that seems to me that needs care and clinical treatment, rather than incarceration.’’

After his dismissal from Harvard in October, Wheeler did not sit idly. Three months later, he applied for an internship at McLean Hospital, Harvard Medical School’s psychiatric hospital. The hospital concluded that Wheeler had fabricated his background, prosecutors said.

In the meantime, Wheeler once again submitted transfer applications — this time to Yale and Brown universities. In his applications, Wheeler said he was interning at McLean and included two false letters of recommendation, the documents show.

Wheeler is being held by Cambridge police pending his arraignment this morning at Middlesex Superior Court in Woburn. He is charged with four counts of larceny over $250, eight counts of identity fraud, seven counts of falsifying an endorsement or approval, and pretending to hold a degree.

THAILAND ON THE BRINK OF CIVIL WAR

BANGKOK POST:

Tanks, armoured cars and about 1,000 soldiers were deployed at Silom and Saladaeng areas awaiting the order to crackdown on red-shirt protesters at the Ratchaprasong intersection, reports said.

Natthawut Saikua, co-leader of the United front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD), said early morning on Wednesday that the Centre for the Resolution of Emergency Government (CRES) had sent tanks and more troops to Saladaeng rally site of the red-shirts.

He ordered security guards on duty at all checkpoints to be alert for any crackdown. He told red-shirted supporters to get ready for the situation, while women, children and elderly were advised to move to nearby Wat Pathumwanaram which is believed to be safety zone.

Two army helicopters were seen flying over the Ratchaprasong area, while the red-shirts fired homemade bamboo rockets at them, said the report.

In recent days, the army has resorted to picking off protesters (the top brass calls them "terrorists") with sniper rifles from afar. But the Red Shirts have defended their encampment: two-square miles of Bangkok's priciest real estate, fortified with concertina wire and bamboo staves.

NYTIMES: A Toronto doctor provided unapproved drugs to professional football players, according to a criminal complaint filed Tuesday in federal court in Buffalo.

The players were not named, but two people briefed on the investigation said the doctor, Anthony Galea, and his assistant were headed to Washington to treat a Redskins player in September when the assistant was stopped at the United States-Canada border with human growth hormone, prompting investigations in both countries.

The complaint charges Galea with illegally distributing human growth hormone, introducing the unapproved drug Actovegin into interstate commerce, making false statements to investigators, and conspiring to defraud the United States.

A lawyer for Galea, Mark J. Mahoney, did not immediately return a call for comment, nor did the federal prosecutor’s office.

A spokesman for the N.F.L. said league officials have not been told of the identity of the players.

“We obviously have a very strong interest in learning who these players are and about their involvement with any prohibited substances so that we can enforce our policies,” the spokesman, Greg Aiello, said. “When we have had evidence of illegal purchase, possession, or use of H.G.H., we have imposed discipline and are fully prepared to do so again if the facts support it.”

N.F.L. officials have been in touch with law enforcement and will continue to cooperate with the federal authorities as the case moves forward, Aiello said.

In Canada, Galea faces four charges related to H.G.H. and Actovegin, a drug made from calves’ blood. American investigators have focused on Galea’s ties to professional athletes, including Alex Rodriguez, Tiger Woods and several other baseball and football players.

Major Powers Have a Deal on Sanctions for Iran, U.S. Says

The Obama administration announced Tuesday a deal with other powers, including Russia and China, to impose a fourth set of sanctions on Iran in as many years, touching off a contest with Tehran to win support in the United Nations Security Council.

The announcement came just a day after Iranian leaders announced a tentative deal with Turkey and Brazil to turn over, for a year, about half of Iran’s stockpile of nuclear fuel, part of an effort to undermine the sanctions resolutions. But even if the new sanctions pass the Security Council it is unclear whether its provisions — including a mandate to inspect Iranian ships suspected of entering foreign ports with nuclear-related technology or weapons — will cause enough pain to force the country to halt uranium enrichment and cooperate with international inspectors.

... The agreement was reached by the United States, Britain, France, Russia and China — the five permanent, veto-wielding members of the Security Council — plus Germany. Russia and China have been the most resistant to the American-led efforts to impose new sanctions on Iran, and blocked any sanctions that would stop the flow of oil out of Iranian ports, or gasoline into the country.

But the countries did agree on sanctions aimed at Iranian financial institutions, including those that support the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. ... The newest element of the sanctions would require countries to inspect ships or aircraft headed into or out of Iran if there are suspicions that banned materials are aboard. But as in the case of North Korea, there is no authorization to board those ships forcibly at sea, a step officials from many countries warned could start a firefight, and perhaps touch off a larger confrontation.

If the council adopts the resolution, it would represent the fourth round of sanctions against Iran. The previous three have failed at their main objective: to force Iran to cease enriching uranium and comply with all demands from the International Atomic Energy Agency to inspect suspect locations, turn over documents related to suspected weapons research and allow interviews of Iranian scientists.

... In recent weeks, administration officials have been playing down expectations. Mrs. Clinton no longer refers to “crippling” sanctions, the word she used in the summer of 2009. Earlier this year she referred to “biting” sanctions, and President Obama, in an interview in April, declined to characterize how the sanctions would effect Iran.

Other officials say they do not expect these sanctions, even if they pass as now written, to dramatically change Iran’s behavior.

Iran has been working mightily to ward off new sanctions, sending its foreign minister to the capitals of countries sitting on the Security Council to make the case that the sanctions amount to an American conspiracy to deprive Iran of its right to enrich uranium under the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty.

Iran’s agreement to ship some of its uranium stockpile to Turkey was widely seen by those who take a harder line on Iran as an attempt to undercut the momentum toward sanctions.

... The Turkish prime minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who had been at the signing of the agreement in Tehran on Monday, rejected the skepticism about the Iranian offer to ship out uranium and pointedly criticized the continued moves toward sanctions by the United States.

“This is the time to discuss whether we believe in the supremacy of law or the law of the supremes and superiors,” he told a news briefing in Madrid. “While they still have nuclear weapons, where do they get the credibility to ask other countries not to have them?”

First, the new sanctions - if they are passed - will accomplish nothing in Iran. All they do is assuage some parts of public opinion is some parts of the so-called "international community".

What do you do with a Qaeda operative you think is a threat to your country, but who has not been charged with any specific crimes, and can’t be deported?

That’s the quandary that the British Government now faces, after a special commission ruled that a Pakistani who it believed to be an agent of Al Qaeda could not be returned to Pakistan because he faced the possibility of torture there.

The BBC reports that the commission described the Pakistani, Abid Naseer, as Pakistani native and alleged leader of a bomb plot, as “an Al Qaeda operative who posed and still poses a serious threat to the national security of the United Kingdom.” It said he and another Pakistani man, Ahmad Faraz Khan, had been planning a bomb attack in 2009 when they were arrested, along with nine other people, and that deportation would be “conducive to the public good.”

However, the commission said, because in Pakistan “there is a long and well-documented history of disappearances, illegal detention and of the torture and ill-treatment of those detained, usually to produce information, a confession or compliance,” neither man could be deported.

The new Home Secretary, Theresa May, released a statement saying that she was disappointed with the ruling, and adding, “We are now taking all possible measures to ensure they do not engage in terrorist activity.”

However, it was unclear exactly what measures the government would take.

The Times of London reported:

It is likely that both men will be put on control orders under which their movements, access to telephones and bank accounts can be restricted.

The ruling has ignited a debate about what to do in such cases, with Philip Johnston of The Guardian noting,

We may have a new government but we have the same old problem with alleged foreign terrorists — we can’t deport them because of their human rights.

Sabirhan Hasanoff, 34, a dual U.S. and Australian citizen who owns a home in Brooklyn, New York, was arrested on April 30 and charged with conspiracy to provide material support to Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda network, according to a U.S. District Court indictment.

Another New York man, Wesam El-Hanafi, was arrested and charged in the same indictment, and is currently detained pending an appearance in Manhattan federal court later this week. Both men are accused of pledging allegiance to al Qaeda and using their computer expertise to aid the group.

After hearing from prosecutors and Hasanoff's attorney Anthony Ricco, U.S. Magistrate Judge James Francis placed Hasanoff in detention without bail, deeming his "level of sophistication" too big a risk.

Hasanoff pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Al Qaeda was responsible for the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States that included strikes on the World Trade Center in New York with hijacked airliners that killed almost 3,000 people. Another hijacked plane hit the Pentagon in Washington and a fourth was brought down in a Pennsylvania field.

PRIME ASSET

Ricco said his client, an accountant, had been a group chief financial officer for a Dubai-based company for 3-1/2 years and that his extensive travel was strictly business.

Assistant U.S. Attorney John Cronan argued Hasanoff "turned to al Qaeda in this very city where he lived and embraced its extremist ideology and radical goals."

Prosecutors said they had a witness who would testify against Hasanoff if the case goes to trial.

Hasanoff's "advanced computer knowledge," as well as his two passports, made him a prime asset to the radical network, Cronan said.

Among Cronan's accusations were that Hasanoff held coded online chats with El-Hanafi discussing fighting overseas, bought e-mail encryption software and made international wire transfers to al Qaeda militants.

He visited Yemen, Syria, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey among other places, Cronan said.

SAUDI WOMAN BEATS UP SHARI'A COP

It was a scene Saudi women’s rights activists have dreamt of for years.

When a Saudi religious policeman sauntered about an amusement park in the eastern Saudi Arabian city of Al-Mubarraz looking for unmarried couples illegally socializing, he probably wasn’t expecting much opposition.

But when he approached a young, 20-something couple meandering through the park together, he received an unprecedented whooping.

A member of the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, the Saudi religious police known locally as the Hai’a, asked the couple to confirm their identities and relationship to one another, as it is a crime in Saudi Arabia for unmarried men and women to mix.

For unknown reasons, the young man collapsed upon being questioned by the cop.

According to the Saudi daily Okaz, the woman then allegedly laid into the religious policeman, punching him repeatedly, and leaving him to be taken to the hospital with bruises across his body and face.

“To see resistance from a woman means a lot,” Wajiha Al-Huwaidar, a Saudi women’s rights activist, told The Media Line news agency. “People are fed up with these religious police, and now they have to pay the price for the humiliation they put people through for years and years. This is just the beginning and there will be more resistance.”

“The media and the Internet have given people a lot of power and the freedom to express their anger,” she said. “The Hai’a are like a militia, but now whenever they do something it’s all over the Internet. This gives them a horrible reputation and gives people power to react.”

We better hope it serves well for the woman's defense: she's now facing the danger of imprisonment and flogging. So let's hope the rights activists are ready to help her on this one.

COMEDY CENTRAL AS JUDEOPHOBE CENTRAL

At the Sydney Morning Herald, a writer on Jewish affairs talks about how Comedy Central, which censored a South Park sketch featuring Mohammed, never did the same with products revolving around Drawn Together, a onetime animated production now being released in DVD, which comes with a game featuring a most horrific idea:

Back to the offensive web game - I.S.R.A.E.L. Attack. The game is part of a promotional campaign for the DVD release of the now cancelled animated television series Drawn Together.

The game opens with an evil looking, long-nosed character screaming at a faceless figure, “You lied to me, Jew producer”. The blabbering, squirming, frightened “Jew producer” at first denies the accusation and then admits that he’s “busted”.

And what did the “Jewish producer” fail to do? He did not kill each one of the Drawn Together cartoon characters after the show was taken off the air.

So, to finish the job the “Jew producer” was supposed to carry out, the giant robot I.S.R.A.E.L - Intelligent Smart Robot Animation Eraser - is dispatched by the villainous mastermind to wipe out every character. Forever.

The blue and white (the colours of the Israeli flag) murderous female robot, equipped with machine-gun, a rocket and eraser bombs goes on a rampage and destroys everything in its path, including animals and plants in addition to children.

Got it? ISRAEL is the cold, efficient, homicidal automaton that is programmed to indiscriminately annihilate without mercy. The game borrows heavily from the classic anti-Semitic blood libel of Jews as baby-killers.

While I've never really cared for South Park, something tells me whatever they've done involving the Jewish community that might be negative is still pretty mild compared to this. "Cowardly Central" is a most fitting description of this crappy network. Trey Parker and Matt Stone would do well to sell South Park somewhere else, like maybe the cable station mentioned here.

HAMAS DESTROYS FELLOW ARABS' HOMES AND EXPELS THEM

A most surprising report. Hamas has done the job Israeli authorities may not have the courage to do:

(Israelnationalnews.com) Hamas police beat and forcibly removed residents from their homes in a southern Gaza city, and the buildings were then demolished by bulldozers.

The Associated Press reports that the Hamas police wielded clubs and pushed the residents out of dozens of homes in Rafah, on the Egyptian border. The incident occurred on Sunday, and destruction was expected to continue on Monday. Hamas authorities said the homes were built illegally on government land.

Newly homeless residents were reportedly furious over Arabs on bulldozers razing Arab homes.

"For years," AP's Rizek Abdel Jawad reports, "Palestinians have criticized Israel for destroying houses, mostly because they were built without permits issued by the military. Now, Rafah residents complained, their own government, run by the Islamic militant Hamas that seized power in Gaza in July 2007, has done the same."

One woman shouted that Hamas had promised reform and change, but had "destroyed our homes" instead. Standing next to the concrete chunks that remained of her house, she said she and her husband had nowhere else to go.

I estimate these people will end up homeless, because truly, Hamas couldn't give a damn about their problems, and their actions are certainly anti-capitalist. As for the "change" part, sound familiar? I thought so.

ISLAM DOMINATES EGYPTIAN ARMY

Another sign of how fundamentalist Islam is ruining a country it's long dwelled in:

JERUSALEM - The Middle East Newsline reports that the Egyptian Army has come under the steady domination of Islamists. Egyptian sources said Islamists have risen to mid- and high-level ranks in the army and navy. They said many of these officers pressure their soldiers to demonstrate a devotion and observance to the Muslim religion regardless of their faith.

“There is an acceptance in most of the military that fundamentalist Islam is legitimate and becoming the dominating trend,” a source familiar with the Egyptian military said.

The sources said the Islamist trend in the military began in the Egyptian Navy during the 1990s. They said the Islamic influence spread to the army and included pressure on non-Muslims to convert.

The Islamist officers were said to have reached senior levels of the army. They sources said the officers have pressed for greater access to mosques, additional time for prayer and ritual as well as decreasing tolerance for secular and non-Muslim soldiers.

The main victims of the Islamization of military have been Coptic Christians, said to comprise about eight percent of Egypt’s population.

Coptic soldiers have reported Islamist harassment, beatings and pressure to convert.

In August 2009, a Coptic soldier was said to have shot himself amid pressure from Islamist officers in his unit. The body of Mubarak Zakaria, 22, was found badly bruised in what the sources said reflected severe beating and torture.

This may even be the case with Turkey's army, or it could become the case soon enough. And if the militaries of foreign countries can be as influential upon their countries, that's one more reason why they'll become more dangerous.

CHOMSKY DENIED ENTRY INTO ISRAEL

BRAVO!: Noam Chomsky denied entry into Israel

Professor Noam Chomsky, an American linguist and left-wing activist, was denied entry into Israel on Sunday, for reasons that were not immediately clear.

Chomsky, who was scheduled to deliver a lecture at Bir Zeit University near Jerusalem, told the Right to Enter activist group by telephone that inspectors had stamped the words "denied entry" onto his passport when he tried to cross from Jordan over Allenby Bridge.

When he asked an Israeli inspector why he had not received permission, he was told that an explanation would be sent in writing to the American embassy.

Chomsky arrived at the Allenby Bridge at around 1:30 in the afternoon and was taken for questioning, before being released back to Amman at 4:30 P.M.

Interior Ministry spokeswoman Sabine Haddad said Chomsky was turned away for various reasons but declined to elaborate. The ministry was looking into allowing him to enter only the West Bank, said Haddad.
