A group of unidentified armed men abducted an American citizen from his residence in the eastern city of Lahore, police officials said on Saturday.
A spokesman for the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad confirmed the abduction and identified the American as Warren Weinstein.
“I can confirm that an American citizen, working for a private company, is missing. We are working with the Pakistani authorities,” said Alberto Rodriguez, the embassy official.
The LinkedIn networking Web site identified a Warren Weinstein as serving Pakistan country director for J.E. Austin Associates Inc., an Arlington, Virginia-based consulting firm. The Web site said Mr. Weinstein had been based in Lahore for seven years, and a police official said Saturday that he had been living alone in Model Town, an old, affluent neighborhood of Lahore, since 2006.
The J.E. Austin Web site called Mr. Weinstein an expert in international development, and said he had been working on the firm’s Pakistan Initiative for Strategic Development and Competitiveness.
