BRRRRRRR!: FLORIDA'S COLDEST DECEMBER EVER

Florida's Coldest Winter in 30 Years

Florida is in the middle of their coldest winter in three decades, and it's not over yet.

Alachua County experienced one of the coldest Decembers ever last month, during which the average daily temperature was 8.5 degrees below normal.

Gainesville tied a record for the coldest December on record last month, which also tied for the second coldest month ever, based on average daily temperatures.

The average daily temperature in Gainesville was 47.6 degrees in December, which tied the old record set in 1989, according to records from the National Weather Service. The 30-year average daily temperature is 56.1 degrees for December.

If you spent time in Blount County this December, you might have noticed one thing: It was cold.

But exactly how cold — and how different this December was from past years — is a different matter. With an average temperature of 32.8 degrees — 8.1 degrees below normal — December 2010 was the 6th coldest 12th month Blount County has seen since 1871.
MORE: Marion County experienced it coldest December ever last month, during which the average daily temperature was nearly 10 degrees below normal.
Ocala recorded its coldest December on record, which also was the fifth coldest month ever, based on average daily temperatures.

The average daily temperature in Ocala was 49.6 degrees in December, which smashed the old mark of 51 degrees set in 1917. The 30-year average daily temperature is 59.5 degrees for December, according to National Weather Service records.

The cold blast also was the fifth coldest month since officials began keeping records in 1896. The rest of the Top 5 fell in January: 47 degrees in 1938; 48.6 in 1940; 48.7 in 1981; and 49.4 in 1977.
