This has been the coldest start to winter for the last 130 years, when records began.

According to Met Eireann, Ireland’s meteorological service, December has officially been the coldest month ever on record.

Last Monday County Mayo recorded low temperatures of -17.2C (1F). Christmas Day may be the coldest ever

Saturday could be the coldest Christmas ever, according to the Met Office, surpassing a record set 14 years ago.

The record daytime temperature for the big day is -5.9C (21F) in 1996 in Glenlivet, Scotland, but the Met Office warned of ‘comparable’ temperatures on Christmas Day in Scotland and north-west England.
