As most of you may have noticed - Fidel has admitted that the Cuban Economic Model is no longer considered appropriate. I believe this sea change is a direct result of Fidel's near death experience and not driven by any new economic data. The Cuban model has clearly only been beneficial for those who possess power in the Communist system. Now that Fidel realizes his remaining time here is short he no longer needs to defend the system he enjoyed. Perhaps he even realizes there is a power higher than the Party.
