It is virtually impossible to determine the true number of casualties that the USSR suffered in World War II.

There are suspicions that the figure of 20 million people includes millions of victims of Stalin's purges of the late 1930's.

I believe that the military losses ranged from 7 to 9 million troops.

These losses were in part so large because the Soviet High Command paid no attention to human lives when launching offensive operations:

one high Soviet official told me that generals deliberately incurred huge losses because that meant to Stalin they were brave!
