Thousands of cancer sufferers are being denied a 'miracle' drug on the NHS that is routinely available in most other Western countries.

The Government's rationing body claims Avastin is not cost-effective despite evidence showing it can prolong the lives of bowel cancer patients by more than two years.

Campaigners claim 'passport prescribing' means patients here are being cruelly penalised - 10 times as many Britons get the drug paid for by private health insurers than on the NHS.

... Currently, the U.S., Australia, Canada, Scandinavia, France, Germany, Italy and almost all EU countries meet the cost of Avastin in bowel cancer.

It is not available in Slovenia, Macedonia and Albania.

The move will represent the first major test of a Tory pledge to fund all cancer drugs, if they win tomorrow’s General Election.
