NYTIMES: Mothers Arrested Before Opposition Rally in Iran
Ahead of a planned opposition rally on Monday, Iran tightened security and arrested over 20 mothers who were mourning children killed in the unrest that has broken out since the disputed June 12 elections.
The mothers took part in an antigovernment protest in Leleh Park in central Tehran every Saturday since the death in June of Neda Agha-Soltan, 26, whose shooting became a symbol of the government’s violent repression.
The rally had been attacked by the police before, but Saturday was the first time the mothers were arrested.
An opposition Web site reported that the protest was broken up by the police and many demonstrators were taken away. The BBC Persian service quoted a witness who said 29 women were arrested, some of whom were later released. But at least 21 remained in jail, the BBC said.
Ms. Agha-Soltan’s mother regularly attended the rally, but it was not clear whether she was there on Saturday or was among those arrested.
The arrests appear to be part of the government’s increasing efforts to suppress a large rally planned for Monday on National Student Day.

6) we were going to run out of oil (I had several professors in college in the early 80's who promised me we would run out of oil by the early 1990's - we actually have MORE KNOWN RESERVES NOW THAN AT ANY TIME IN HISTORY - AND IT IS ALL BUT A PROVEN SCIENTIFIC FACT THAT OIL IS NOT A FOSSIL FUEL, BUT IS INSTEAD A NATURAL OCCURRING SUBSTANCE)

BBC: E-mails hacked from a climate research institute suggest climate change does not have a human cause, according to Saudi Arabia's lead climate negotiator.
Mohammad Al-Sabban told BBC News that the issue will have a "huge impact" on next week's UN climate summit, with countries unwilling to cut emissions.
... Mr Al-Sabban made clear that he expects it to derail the single biggest objective of the summit - to agree limitations on greenhouse gas emissions.
"It appears from the details of the scandal that there is no relationship whatsoever between human activities and climate change," he told BBC News.
"Climate is changing for thousands of years, but for natural and not human-induced reasons.
"So, whatever the international community does to reduce greenhouse gas emissions will have no effect on the climate's natural variability."
Some other countries shared this view, he said; and as a result, governments would not be prepared to countenance agreeing anything that would affect economic growth for many years, until "new evidence" settled the scientific picture.

... Meanwhile another leading US climate scientist, Nasa's James Hansen, has said it would be better if the Copenhagen summit failed.

In other new findings in the report:
• It took 17 minutes for the chief of the Virginia Tech Police Department to get through to the executive vice president’s office after he learned of the dorm shooting.
• Campus trash collection was canceled 21 minutes before students and teachers were warned.
• Virginia Tech’s government affairs director ordered Steger’s office locked around 8:52 a.m. Two classroom buildings were also locked down well before the notification went out. But Owczarski said the office was never locked.
• One student killed in the dorm, Emily Hilscher, survived several hours after being shot, but no one bothered to notify her family until she had died. A call to her parents Friday wasn’t immediately returned.
• An administrator who was a member of a policy group dealing with the shooting mailed a colleague in Richmond around 8:45 a.m. that a gunman was on the loose, but warned the colleague to make sure that information didn’t get out because it was not yet "releasable."
• Virginia Tech had two different emergency-alert policies in effect at the time, and that led to the delay in issuing the university-wide alert.
The original report criticized the university’s failure to act on warning signs from Cho that included violent, twisted writings and sullen, hostile behavior. It also criticized the communications failures and other problems that allowed nearly two hours to elapse between the first gunshots and the campus-wide notification…

The Met Office plans to re-examine 160 years of temperature data after admitting that public confidence in the science on man-made global warming has been shattered by leaked e-mails.The new analysis of the data will take three years, meaning that the Met Office will not be able to state with absolute confidence the extent of the warming trend until the end of 2012.
The Met Office database is one of three main sources of temperature data analysis on which the UN’s main climate change science body relies for its assessment that global warming is a serious danger to the world. This assessment is the basis for next week’s climate change talks in Copenhagen aimed at cutting CO2 emissions.
THE UN'S IPCC AND THE USA'S EPA SHOULD DELAY ANY AND ALL MARKETPLACE, TAX AND TRADE CHANGES UNTIL THIS REPORT IS DONE AND SUFFICIENTLY VETTED BY A TRULY HONEST AND OPEN PEER-REVIEW.

INSTEAD OF RELAXING IN A CHALET IN GSTAAD, POLANSKI DESERVES JUSTICE.FILM director Roman Polanski was released on bail into house arrest in his Swiss chalet in the up-market resort of Gstaad yesterday, following his arrest for fleeing sentencing in the United States for unlawful sex with a 13-year-old girl in 1977."Roman Polanski was released from custody pending extradition and transferred to Gstaad, where he is under house arrest at his chalet," the Swiss government said in a statement. "Polanski has undertaken not to leave his house and property at any time."
Polanski was released from prison after posting $4.5million (£2.7m) bail, on condition he wore an electronic monitoring tag, surrendered his identity and travel documents, and did not leave his house.
House arrest means the Oscar-winning director could spend time with his family – he is married to French singer and actress Emmanuelle Seigner, with whom he has two children – while waiting for a decision on extradition.
"It must be special treatment – if he were a normal man, they would keep him in jail," said Anne-Marie Fankhauser, a local resident in Gstaad.

The data from the Climatic Research Unit at East Anglia University — headquarters for Climategate — is now discredited.RTWT.
This discredits any findings by other research bodies that relied on the Climategate data.
How much falls from Climategate, whose participants read like a Who’s Who at the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change?
Not much, says CRU’s disgraced director, Phil Jones, pointing out that CRU’s data for global temperatures is but one of several datasets, all in general agreement. Besides, many argue, CRU was no linchpin to the science. The IPCC relied on numerous other sources. Throw CRU out, they say, and the IPCC’s conclusions remain unshakable.
In truth, if you throw CRU out, you’ve eviscerated the findings of the IPCC’s Fourth Assessment Report, the most recent and most definite opus from the UN.
... There is no unimpeachable raw data in which we can have confidence. There is a large cast of impeachable characters in the Climategate drama with an evident appetite for cooking the books.
And there are but two honest options for our governments to now employ. They can choose to redo the studies, with data, scientists, and a peer-review process that can be trusted. Or they can recognize that the IPCC process has been politicized from the start, and that the prima facie evidence for dangerous global warming does not meet the threshold required to prolong the scientific sham of the generation.

Foreign Policy has given Stephen Walt space to write a piece headlined “Why They Hate Us,” in which he asks:
“How many Muslims has the United States killed in the past thirty years, and how many Americans have been killed by Muslims?”He calculates thusly:While “Muslims” may have killed 2,819 Americans on 9/11, Americans killed “at least 100,000” Muslims through the U.N. sanctions imposed on Iraq. While Somali “militia” killed 18 U.S. military in Mogadishu, American military men killed 315 Somali militia. While “Muslims” killed 300 U.S. Marines and diplomats in Beirut in 1983, Americans have killed up to 32,000 Afghan citizens.
He goes on and on like this.His bottom line: While “Muslims” have killed 10,325 Americans, Americans have killed 288,000 Muslims.
Walt concludes:
“The United States has killed nearly 30 Muslims for every American lost. The real ratio is probably much higher, and a reasonable upper bound for Muslim fatalities (based mostly on higher estimates of ‘excess deaths’ in Iraq due to the sanctions regime and the post-2003 occupation) is well over one million, equivalent to over 100 Muslim fatalities for every American lost.”He quotes an unnamed “prominent English journalist” who, he says, has articulated his point “quite simply.”“If the United States wants to improve its image in the Islamic world,” he said, “it should stop killing Muslims.”Moral relativism is hardly uncommon in today’s political discourse, but refusing to differentiate between American troops trying to feed starving Somalis and Somali terrorists trying to stop the feeding program really does take the cake, so to speak.
It’s also revealing that Walt neglects to ask how many Muslims have been killed by Saddam Hussein, by al-Qaeda, by Iranian proxy death squads in Iraq, by the Taliban, and by other radical Muslim groups.
There obviously is no recognition by Walt that in recent years Americans have sacrificed lives and treasure to save Muslims from tyranny and carnage in Bosnia, Kuwait, Somalia, Iraq, and Afghanistan — and, yes, Muslims were killed in the process because in each of these cases, except Bosnia, Muslim communities were threatened by radical Muslim groups or regimes.
You think this sort of smarmy attack on America has no impact?
I received the Walt piece today on a Pakistani list-serve in which I am included. It was posted to demonstrate, once again, what sinister and untrustworthy people Americans really are.
One can imagine al-Qaeda, the Taliban, and various Islamist apologists using this as a rough guide as to how many Americans they would be justified to slaughter. This is a wonderful time for Walt to be offering such little propaganda gifts to America’s enemies, don’t you think?
Keep in mind that Walt not only publishes this pseudo-scholarship in respectable journals, he also teaches it on respectable campuses — has for years.
Walt calls himself a “realist” but I’ll need someone to explain to me where he differs from the hard, anti-American left.

Few would deny that Muslims too are victims of Islamist terror. But a new study by the Combating Terrorism Center in the US has shown that an overwhelming majority of al-Qaida victims are, in fact, co-religionists.ABOVIA ESTHER.
In the battle against unbelievers, can one also kill Muslims? Even the terror network al-Qaida is troubled by this question.
... But even as such apologetic communiqués from al-Qaida show the terror network stylizing itself as a defender of the true faith wrestling with religious concepts, they also make it look as though any dead Muslims are regretful but isolated cases. The facts, though, tell a different story.
Between 2004 and 2008, for example, al-Qaida claimed responsibility for 313 attacks, resulting in the deaths of 3,010 people. And even though these attacks include terrorist incidents in the West -- in Madrid in 2004 and in London in 2005 -- only 12 percent of those killed (371 deaths) were Westerners.
