The U.N. nuclear watchdog says his agency is locked in a "stalemate" with Iran over the country's suspect nuclear program.

Media-fostered Obama cult is proto-Fascist
“What’s Your Pledge?” “To be a servant to our president,” says Demi Moore. “To be of service to Barack Obama,” says Anthony Kiedis. We are witnessing something beyond the every-day attempt to package a political leader in a compelling way. In fact, we may very well be watching the emergence of a cult of personality. To some, even the suggestion of this is absurd because we associate such things with despotism. How could a free society fall prey to such a thing?
Well, where are the radical mantras of “question authority” now? Where have all the liberal flowers gone? They’ve gone to Washington, D.C., everyone. And because children are our future, let’s teach them well and let them lead the way. It’s time to kick the “juvenile idealization of the President” up a notch.
Ever see pictures of LBJ in homes? Nixon? Ford? Carter? Reagan? Anyone named Bush? Clinton? How about Barack Obama? Oh yeah. They are popping out on walls all over America because, like FDR and JFK were, Mr. Obama is being increasingly seen as a colossus standing above it all. He’s a super leader who can do super things. And children in school next Tuesday will have that image reinforced to them, irrespective of what is actually said in the speech.
A cult of personality happens when mass media creates and fosters an idealized and heroic public image for a political leader. It is most often connected with totalitarian regimes, but, as Jonah Goldberg has pointed out in his book, Liberal Fascism: The Secret History of the American Left from Mussolini to the Politics of Meaning, the original use of the word “totalitarian” described a “humane” society, “one in which everyone is taken care of and contributes equally. It was an organic concept where every class, every individual, was part of the larger whole.” Sound familiar?
And of course, it just infuriates liberals to hear even the suggestion that their agenda might indeed resemble fascism, because for so long the mantra has been that “right-wing” conservatives are fascists. But, put simply, true conservatives do not believe in big government and are all about individual liberty – two traits that are decidedly anti-fascist. Fascism is about the expansion, glorification, and predominance of the state – that’s liberalism, not conservatism.
But dull facts are no match for frenzied media. And young minds are no match for a massive campaign to foster the image of a president as more than what our constitution requires him – or her – to be. Do I believe that we are on the verge of some kind of massive move toward “friendly totalitarianism” in America? No. But I do think that if it ever really happened here, it would travel along the same national nerve pathways that are being used by this White House right now.

Observing San Francisco

As I’ve mentioned, my wife, Helene, and I are house-sitting in San Francisco, a wonderful, quirky city but also home pond to Nancy Pelosi and other odd ducks. Following are a few random sightings and quotes that provide a small whiff of the atmosphere here, such as the fact that there are so many Priuses here with Obama bumper stickers that I now suspect that all the cars Toyota shipped to San Francisco last year came with the Obama stickers built into the bumpers at the factory.
When we first saw the following poster in a window we thought it must have been home-made, but subsequent sightings, and this site, reveal that it is in fact mass-produced, presumably with an audience of purchasers. [UPDATE: This link has been corrected. It should have pointed, as it does now, to a site with many Obey Obama posters.]
I think this poster speaks for itself, and it says volumes about the mentality of many of the most fervent Obamaphiles.
Riding on a MUNI bus one day (Helene likes to ride the buses so she can tune up her Spanish) we picked up a copy of the San Francisco Bay Guardian someone had left behind, perhaps the only paper in the land that can make the San Francisco Chronicle seem almost sane. On page 13 of the Sept. 2 – 8, 2009, issue there is a large announcement of High Holiday Services at the Beyt Tikkun Synagogue-Without-Walls featuring Rabbi Michael Lerner and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Alice Walker. (This announcement is not available in the Guardian online, but almost the same thing is online here.) I was struck by the caption under Alice Walker’s picture in the Guardian, which stated that she would speak “about how Oppressed People can Become Oppressors.” I didn’t realize, I thought at first to myself, that Alice Walker had become a critic of racial quotas, etc., but then, after reading the announcement, realized she was talking about the Jews. Silly me.

For what it is worth I thought readers of this site should be informed of some recent news from Denmark - a nation that has provided universal healthcare for all its citizens for decades.
You might be interested to know that 1.7 million Danes, out of a total population of about 5 million, have private supplementary healthcare insurance coverage so they can be treated at private clinics when they need healthcare.
Approximately half of these private policies are provided by employers- the remaining 800.000 choose to purchase this coverage - out of their own after tax income - themselves.
If this relatively small system was functioning well, do you think more than a 3rd of their captive customers would purchase supplementary coverage?
And do you think the United States Government is capable of managing a system with more than 300 million customers?

WHY THINGS ARE GETTING WORSE IN AFGHANISTAN - (DESPITE OBAMA'S TROOP ESCALATION), AND WHAT MUST BE DONE ABOUT IT

WHY IS THIS SO?
I'LL TELL YOU WHY - AND YOU WON'T READ THIS ANYWHERE ELSE:
IT'S BECAUSE LET THEW PAKIS GET RID OF MUSHARRAF.
Musharraf as far from perfect and there was undoubtedly a lot of double-dealing going on during his reign - with or without his knowledge.
But things were better then.
But the Democrats - especially Joe "let's divide up Iraq" Biden and Jean Francoise Kerry - allied themselves with Sharif and Bhutto and agitated for Musharraf's ouster and the return of Sharif and Bhutto to power.
Bush and Musharraf acquiesced.
WHAT WAS THE CHIEF RESULT OF THIS APPEASMENT?
What's ALWAYS the result of appeasement?
More violence.
IT WAS ALL SO PREDICTABLE:
The new "democratic" government led by Bhutto's widower - the incredibly corrupt "Mr. 10%" - appeased the Taliban and allowed Taliban to strengthen themselves in the lawless tribal regions.
Now, a year or so later all the libs and the permanent shadow government of CIA bureaucrats have decided that Afghanistan might not be winnable and maybe we should exit. They wonder: maybe Obama's escalation is a mistake - and Democrats in Congress predictably prepare to "bug out"....
Even George Will has endorsed this idiocy.
HERE'S THE REAL ANSWER:
We must simply tell Pakistan this:
Only the regions which the government of Pakistan can exercise political, legal, police, jurisprudential, and military control over are legitimately party of Pakistan.
If they cannot control the FATA regions and the Taliban "safe havens" then they are DE FACTO not part of Pakistan.
Lawless regions within so-called "international borders" are merely DE JURE parts of Pakistan and these borders will no longer be recognized. Henceforth, we will attack the enemy of our ally Afghanistan at will - and with all necessary force within these lawless/self-administered regions.
THEN WE GO IN THERE AT WILL WITH WHATEVER KINETIC FORCE OUR MILITARY SAYS THEY NEED TO DO THE JOB.
AND THE JOB IS ANNIHILATING THE ENEMY.
And if there are civilian casualties, then TOUGH SHIT. if civilians in these regions don't want to be collateral damage then they should split at once.
This is a brutal strategy - but one which would succeed.

Ninety people were arrested following clashes between right-wing protestors and anti-fascist campaigners in Birmingham on Saturday.
A group called the English Defence League, which said it was protesting against Islamic extremism, was met with a counter demonstration.

The arrested are aged between 16 and 39 and offences include criminal damage.

Britain: Question a doctor and lose your child
PARENTS are being threatened with having their children taken into care after questioning doctors’ diagnoses or objecting to their medical care. John Hemming, a Liberal Democrat MP, who campaigns to stop injustices in the family court, said: “Very often care proceedings are used as retaliation by local authorities against ‘uppity’ people who question the system.” Cases are emerging across the UK:
* The mother of a 13-year-old girl who became partly paralysed after being given a cervical cancer vaccination says social workers have told her the child may be removed if she (the mother) continues to link her condition with the vaccination.
* A couple had all six of their children removed from their care after they disputed the necessity of an invasive medical test on their eldest daughter. Doctors, who suspected she might have had a blood disease, called for social services to obtain an emergency protection order, although it was subsequently confirmed that she was not suffering from the condition. The parents were still considered unstable, and all their children were taken from them.
* A single mother whose teenage son is terminally ill and confined to a wheelchair has been told he is to become the subject of a care order after she complained that her local authority’s failure to provide bathroom facilities for him has left her struggling to maintain sanitary standards.
In the first of those cases, Ashleigh Cave, 13, from Liverpool, began experiencing severe headaches and dizziness half an hour after being inoculated last October with Cervarix, which guards against girls contracting the human papilloma virus. The schoolgirl was soon collapsing repeatedly; she lost the use of her legs and was admitted to Alder Hey children’s hospital. Nearly 11 months later she is still in hospital and is unable to stand or walk unaided. Her mother, Cheryl, has now been told that doctors believe her condition must be psychosomatic.
“The hospital brought in social workers from the local authority who have told me they are considering putting Ashleigh on an at-risk register,” Cheryl Cave said. She is convinced her daughter’s paralysis was caused by the vaccination. Cave said that a social worker from Sefton council said she suspected her of having Munchausen’s syndrome by proxy or factitious illness syndrome — controversial conditions in which mothers are said to attribute illnesses falsely to their children in order to gain attention.
Cave said: “The social worker said I should stop believing the injection has anything to do with Ashleigh’s condition because I am putting my thoughts on to her and stopping her getting well. “Since Ashleigh was in hospital she has become incontinent and had double kidney infections and chest infections. Have I made all these up?”
In the third of these cases, Melvilina Gavin-Langley’s 16-year-old son Omar is terminally ill with Duchenne muscular dystrophy and restricted to a wheelchair. His mother is embroiled in a legal dispute with Birmingham city council over a partly completed extension intended to provide Omar with easy access to a bathroom.
Gavin-Langley, 49, who wants the extension rebuilt because she says it was designed in a way that was dangerous and obstructed access to sewers, said: “I have had to carry Omar upstairs to bathe him but it was risking dislocating his shoulders and also I got a hernia from all the lifting. “I told the council I could no longer lift Omar across my back.
“They then turned that around and said I had said I could no longer care for my son. They say they have to put him into care because his hair has not been washed and he’s not getting a bath. They have just threatened me with this because they don’t like me taking legal action against them.” A spokesman for Birmingham city council confirmed the council was seeking an interim care order but said social workers wanted Omar to remain with his mother.
Sefton council did not comment on the Ashleigh Cave case.

LAWYERS KILLING HEALTHCARE IN BRITAIN, TOO

THIS IS INTERESTING FOR TWO REASONS: IT SHOWS THAT THE NHS IS NOT BETTER THAN US HEALTHCARE, AND THAT LAWYERS THERE ARE JUST AS AWFUL AS THEY ARE HERE.

HEALTH chiefs have been forced to spend more than £2.7billion of tax- payer’s money in compensation claims.
A joint investigation into NHS litigation by the Sunday Express and the Conservatives shows payouts for NHS blunders cost every working person in Britain more than £15 a year.
The latest tally amounts to £2.71billion since Labour came to power.
The number of claims last year was a record, costing the taxpayer £312million, a 1,300 per cent rise since 1997.
And payouts will almost double next year thanks to more lawyers offering no-win, no-fee deals. Hospitals have been ordered to put aside £713million to pay for botched treatment.
Lawyers’ fees are spiralling: up from 22 per cent of payouts in the financial year 2005-6 to 33 per cent in the 12 months to April this year – earning them £103million.

NYTIMES: Wall Street Pursues Profit in Bundles of Life Insurance
After the mortgage business imploded last year, Wall Street investment banks began searching for another big idea to make money.
They think they may have found one.
The bankers plan to buy “life settlements,” life insurance policies that ill and elderly people sell for cash — $400,000 for a $1 million policy, say, depending on the life expectancy of the insured person.
Then they plan to “securitize” these policies, in Wall Street jargon, by packaging hundreds or thousands together into bonds.
They will then resell those bonds to investors, like big pension funds, who will receive the payouts when people with the insurance die.
The earlier the policyholder dies, the bigger the return — though if people live longer than expected, investors could get poor returns or even lose money.
