On June 2, 1967, 26 year old Benno Ohnesorg was shot in the back of the head by a police officer - Heinz Kurras - during a student protest against the Shah of Iran.
The photograph of Ohnesborg lying lifeless on the pavement became an iconic image among the left in West Germany - and has been credited with inspiring and galvanising the violent leftwing terror groups such as RAF (Rote Armee Fraktion) and the Bewegung 2 Juni - M2J.
The ideology and deeds of these groups were anti-capitalist, anti-zionist, and anti-semitic.
Heinz Kurras was aquitted for the death of Ohnesorg.
Recently, Stasi expert Helmut Müller-Enbergs has uncovered proof in the Stasi archives that Kurras was a member of the Communist Party (SED) and a Stasi Agent.
Müller-Enbergs has not found any evidence that the murder of Ohnesborg was executed after orders from Stasi and points to the fact that Kurras was known to be violent and trigger happy.
It is ironic that an act of police brutality - which cemented the impression among the left that the police in West Germany were facists - was in fact committed by a left winger!
But do not be suprised - this in fact proves the deep rooted similarities between facism and socialism.
