The government should butt out of our healthcare system. In fact, I actually advocate that the federal government stop paying the employer portion of health-insurance coverage right now. Were that to happen, we'd see an immediate sea change in the health-insurance industry. The government's paying in is jacking up the rates for all of us!
With all these layoffs right now, more and more people are being forced into no-insurance. Were the free market left to work, the cost of that insurance would, of necessity, come down; and doctors and hospitals would have to bargain, too.
Right now all over the country, many docs will no longer take any insurance as payment. Guess what? The cost of doc visits has dropped some 30%, and service is much better too: house calls, Sunday hours, etc.
Another benefit of my proposal: Those of us being extorted by COBRA rates ($1000-$1200 every month) would be able to put money into savings and investments, as well as buying merchandise. Those steps would stimulate our economy.
So, why do people pay the extortion rates I mention? Fear of bankruptcy due to medical bills, such bankruptcies happen with some frequency. That law allowing for liens against one's one home for medical bills needs to be modified.
National healthcare will in no way have the benefits often touted by the left.
