THE GOP LOST BECAUSE:
1 - IT DIDN'T NOMINATE A CONSERVATIVE; IT NOMINATED A "CENTRIST".THEREFORE: ALL THE GOP HAS TO DO TO WIN IS NOMINATE A REAL CONSERVATIVE - LIKE MITT OR DEMINT OR CORNYN OR INHOFE OR NEWT OR PALIN.
2 - IT WAS OUTSPENT 8-1 BECAUSE OBAMA LIED AND OPTED OUT OF MCCAIN-FEINGOLD.
3 - THE STOCK MARKET CRASHED.
4 - WE WON IN IRAQ - SO IT WENT OFF THE FRONT PAGES.
5 - THE MSM WAS TOTALLY IN THE TANK FOR OBAMA, VIRTUALLY TELE-FELLATING HIM.
- CONSERVATIVE PHILOSOPHY IS FINE - BASED ON PRINCIPLES AND OPEN TO DEBATE ON POLICY.
- CONSERVATIVES JUST NEED TO STICK TO PRINCIPLES AND FIGHT FOR GOP CANDIDATES WHO WILL STAND FOR THOSE PRINCIPLES.
(MCCAIN WON NEW HAMPSHIRE AND FLORIDA BECAUSE DEMOCRATS VOTED FOR HIM, NOT REPUBLICANS.)

That won't work because not every state requires you to provide a political affiliation when you register to vote. Missouri, where I live, doesn't. Kansas, right next door, does.
I rather dislike the idea of providing your party affiliation anyway because it leads to all the problems we have with voter drives. A liberal/leftist group can easily throw out Republican registrations, and a conservative group can do the same with Democrat registrations.
Further, at least as far as Kansas is concerned, I think it's a fairly easy process to change your party affiliation. People hell-bent on crossing party lines are going to do it however they can.
I would love to see someone like Newt, but he's got too much baggage. It's doubtful I would support him. Any Democrat opponent would drag up his affairs, welfare reform (even though it was good) and that misquote about medicare hanging on the vine. I supported Thompson, but he couldn't get any traction. He might have done better with more money. He just didn't have what McCain and Romney had, sadly.

It's time to change the nomination process. Iowa and New Hampshire allow Democrats to vote in the GOP primary. Why would we allow the Left to nominate our candidate?
We should immediately overhaul the primary system to ensure only states that restrict the primary to registered Republicans are first in line.
