Pelosi and Reid cave in: will allow votes on re-opening off-shore drilling

WASHINGTON POST:
Congressional Democrats, balancing political reality against a policy they have long opposed, are on the cusp of approving legislation that would open the Atlantic and Pacific oceans to oil drilling as close as 50 miles offshore.

With votes scheduled this week in the House and Senate, Democrats have essentially given up defending the current ban on drilling within 200 miles offshore along both coasts. Instead, led by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), they are offering a mix of proposals that would allow drilling, with the waters off Massachusetts, Virginia and Georgia most likely to be the first affected.
THIS IS GOOD NEWS - FOR OUR ENERGY SUPPLIES AND COSTS, AND FOR THE GOP.
  • AND IT'S PART AND PARCEL OF THE FACT THAT OBAMA HAS LOST.
  • ALL THE CONGRESSIONAL DEMOCRATS ARE JUMPING SHIP: IT'S EVERYMAN FOR HIMSELF!
  • DESPITE THIS DESPERATE DEMOCRAT EFFORT TO GET BACK IN THE GOOD GRACES OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE AND BACK IN STEP WITH THE COMMON SENSE APPROACH TO ENERGY ISSUES IN TIME FOR THE ELECTION, MCCAIN-PALIN AND THE GOP - AND NOT THE DEMOCRATS - WILL GET A BIG BOUNCE OUT OF THIS.
  • IT PROVES THAT MCCAIN-PALIN AND THE GOP ARE ALREADY LEADING THE WAY.
  • OBAMA: IT'S TIME YOU GOT OUT OF THE WAY!
VOTE ACCORDINGLY.

Don't get too giddy yet. I've read that Pelosi's plan has a provision in it that doesn't give the states a share of the royalties, meaning that they don't have an incentive for opting in.

That provision, if it's being reported accurately, must be changed for it to have an impact.

I don't believe this will lead to any, uh, what's the word, oh yeah, OIL! They've figured a way to give the fawning media a chance to say "See? The Democrats want to lower gas prices too." without actually changing the amount of oil that is drilled. There's nothing about oil shale. There's nothing about Canadian tar sands. There's nothing about oil production in this bill.

And that's before the lawyers sue to stop any drilling before all sorts of environmental impact studies are taken. Forever. So forget about selling me this pig in a poke.

Correct, it's all a Media Ploy, trying to stir up enough talk that the Democrats are solving the problem of energy....while in fact they have always been the ones to stand in the way of progress.

All their talk about moving forward and solving anything is crap, these Liberals have only talked, talk is all they are good at, and when they get in an argument they will only change the subject because they can not win.

America is a Free Land with Free Markets, the government should not be forcing the American people to use any one thing, all the options should be available and people will choose as they will.

I hate Liberals and hippies.

THEY DEMS THINK IT'S A PLOY BUT THEY'RE PAINTING THEMSELVES INTO A CORNER.

CONGRESSMEN ARE RUNNING SCARED.

AS OBAMA DEFLATES THEY NEED SOMETHING TO COMBAT THE WAVE OF PALINMANIA.

THEY THINK THIS CAN STOP IT.

EXPANDED DRILLING OFF SHORE WILL PASS.

BUT THE CREDIT WILL BE OURS!

The Republicans in Congress just need to stick to their guns and let the BAN expire.

Otherwise the dems will have a bill that is so laden with restrictions and impediments that no actual drilling will every be able to be done.

Yeah, politically it's a victory, but the 'within 50 mile" limit bothers me. The way the continental shelf drops off, and looking at the likely depths involved, this is going to be awfully hard to feasibly drill and produce.
