MORE PROOF THAT DAVID BROOKS IS A WEIRDO: HE DOESN'T UNDERSTAND WHY 80% OF THE PUBLIC IS UNHAPPY WITH THE DIRECTION OF THE COUNTRY

None of us have ever lived through an election at a time when 80 percent of voters think the country is headed in the wrong direction. But now that we’re in the thick of it, a few things are clear. From voters, the demand is: Surprise Me Most. For candidates, the lesson is: Weirdness Wins.

The reason Bush and Congress are BOTH so unpopular and "right direction" numbers are also low is simple - BUT OBVIOUSLY WAY ABOVE DAVID'S PAY GRADE:

• GOP conservatives - about 30% of the overall electorate - think Bush has been weak on the GWOT and on spending and on illegal immigration. SO WE'RE UNHAPPY!

• The leftie loons - about 30% of the overall electorate - are unhappy 'cause they wanted Congress to raise taxes and retreat.

• Another 20% are unhappy because they believe the crap the MSM tells them: we're in a depression and we lost Iraq.

It's not because of anything in David's column; (when your premise is nonsense it's hard to go anywhere but down!).
