IMHO, these were his best performances: Ben Hur. Planet of the Apes. The Ten Commandments. Will Penny. The Agony and the Ecstasy. Touch of Evil. Khartoum; (he played General Gordon - who defended Sudan from an invading Muslim army led by a self-proclaimed Mahdi. Gordon lost and was BEHEADED. Things haven't changed much, have they?). And - El Cid, (a great Spanish general who defeated the Muslims invaders Spain and restored part of Spain to the West. Temporarily).
Rest in Peace.

Not to take anything away from the great Charlton Heston, but El Cid fought against Moorish kings, and at times, as an ally or as a mercenary working for Moorish kings.
el cid is most famous as an opponent of the muslims.
BTW: did David fight as a mercenary?
While exiled from the court of Yehudah, David and his band did fight in the civil wars of foreign city-states.
And of course I agree that the popular fame of El Cid is as a general in the war to liberate Spain from the Muslim conquerors.
