A construction crane - jacking itself up - crashed in Manhattan yesterday, killing at least four people and injuring many others.
These types of accidents are not so rare as you might think.
Here's video (below) of one from a few years back which killed three people.
The sound it makes just before crashing is probably similar to the sound heard by an eyewitness today in NYC.
My condolences to all hurt and the families of those killed.
