TURKEY'S SNOWIEST WINTER IN DECADES CONTINUES

EARTH TIMES:
Ankara - Traffic on major roads, domestic flights and sea transportation was disrupted in Turkey on Sunday after heavy snowfalls across the country, the Anadolu news agency reported. The main highway between Istanbul and Edirne, near the border with Bulgaria and Greece, was closed by police as was the main road between the capital Ankara and the central Anatolian city of Konya.

Dozens of domestic flights were cancelled as were ferries that cross the Dardenelles.

Thousands of villages across the country were cut off by the snow and homeless people were reported to have frozen to death overnight in the western city of Bursa.

Authorities called on people to avoid unnecessary travel and for all vehicles to equipped with snow chains.

With further snow predicted until mid-week, authorities in a number of provinces cancelled school for Monday.
