Given Obama's support among young people, I believe that he will be most invested in defending the interests of these rising generations and, therefore, the long-term interests of this nation as a whole. Such an outcome would be an unacceptable legacy for any great nation.
I'm sad to say the following: I believe that many Americans, of all Party persuasions, may be thinking in a manner similar to that presented in the above essay. If Obama makes the Democratic Party's ticket, that ticket just might take the election. Of course, one never knows what a voter will do once inside the voting booth. Also, any of the candidates could be swiftboated--if the mainstream media's hold can be broken.
Of this much I'm completely convinced: Conservative voters had better not sit out the 2008 National Elections, as many voters did in November 2006 in order to "teach the politicians a lesson."

You'll get no argument from me! I agree with your analysis--most of it, anyway.
All I want to alert us conservatives to is that the same kind of "logic" used in Susan Eisenhower's essay is being actively promoted all over the place--in the media, in colleges, in the lunch rooms. And people who think the way you and I do are keeping quiet in those forums out of fear of losing jobs, friends, whatever.
One can't be anonymous in those situations.

I almost came to blows with my Christmas dinner host over some of the matters mentioned in the WaPo essay. I'm not sure that my host is speaking to me any more. I presented a cogent analysis, and that presentation made him so angry that I couldn't believe his reaction.

I admit that I'm very discouraged. But I'm no quitter. One of my best Marine friends says that I'm a fighter. I can't give up when I think that I'm right.
