Sarkozy's UMP had a disappointing result in the last election - they actually have FEWER seats now than under Chirac. The Socialists GAINED!
WHY? How did Sarko go from an unstoppable force to mediocrity?
Some - like Capt Ed - say it was complacency of the electorate. NOPE! (AND YOU SHOULDN'T
EVER BLAME THE VOTERS, ED!)
The REAL: reason is simple: Sarkozy appeased the Left and lost his base.
NEED PROOF?! HERE: The Socialists GAINED seats in a low turnout election. This means that the Right-wing didn't turn out to vote FOR SARKO in this election, though they had in the previous two.
WHAT HAPPENED IN THE INTERVENING TIME!?
Sarkozy appointed 4 socialists and a few centrists to his cabinet.
This was a DISINCENTIVE for MANY of the people on the Right to continue to support him. He moderated himself into mediocrity.
THERE IS A LESSON IN THIS FOR THE GOP:
Don't try to get the people of the Democratic Left to like you; satisfy the base.
IOW: Dance with the one what brung ya!
