THE JOOOOS WIN AGAIN!

Sarkozy is Jewish! But you don't mention it, of course. You use a slightly more devious term: "Neo-Con". Neoconservatism is pretty much a spent force in American politics after the Iraq difficulties so when you keep blathering about the neocons, you are referring to the ethnic identity of most of them. A typical excerpt below:

Specifically, Royal says, "I am not for a Europe that allies with the U.S. I have never been, and will never. apologize to President Bush for the position of France on the issue of refusing to send troops to Iraq."

Sarkozy denies making any apologies. He says that, under his leadership, France would be an independent player that would not be afraid to tell U.S. presidents when they are wrong.

But that has not stopped Royal's backers from trying to chip away at Sarkozy's popular appeal -- most of which appears to be rooted in the appeal of his tough approach to domestic issues such as crime and immigration -- by referring to him as "an American neo-conservative with a French passport." and producing a 9O-page review of Sarkozy's links with U.S. right wingers that refers to the conservative candidate as a "French unit of Bush & Company."

And the Sarkozy victory seems to have sent the demented Right even further around the bend than usual. Flopping Aces has a big post on the many attempts to demonize Sarko. See also The Times of London on that. Election night report from Nidra Poller in France here

More on Sarko's win: "Despite all the warnings of imminent havoc from Segolene Royal, his run-off opponent, and the left, the French have given a solid mandate to Sarko the Hungarian immigrant's son to apply the radical medicine that he has been prescribing for the country's ills. Sarko has won about 53 percent of the vote and Royal 47 percent with a very high turnout of about 85 percent. In his victory speech Sarkozy said the vote was a clear mandate for radical change. "Together we are going to write a new page of history," he told supporters. "The page, I am sure, will be great and it will be beautiful." Sarko delivered a lyrical victory speech, voicing his love for "this great and beautiful nation which has given me everything." He promised to be "the president of all the French" and fulfill his pledges of immediate reform. "The French have chosen to break with the ideas, habits and behaviour of the past," he said. "I will restore the value of work, authority, merit and respect for the nation." He would also rid France of its habit of "repenting" for its past historical sins. "This repentance is a form of self-hatred," he said. He offered friendship to the United States"

That the freely elected President of the French Republic is a Jew gives me a strange new respect for France

Sarkozy is not Jewish.

Sarkozy's grandmother was Jewish. That makes him Jewish enough for Hitler, and that makes him Jewish enough for all the other Jew-haters out there.

OOT, I think we have to respect France for this reason as well: Sarkozy was elected specifically because he stands against the anarchy and the rioting of the "youths."
In other words, France voted to fight back against the Islamofascists in their midst.

Pasto,

Not quite. Sarkozy's maternal grandfather, Benedict Mallah, although born a Jew, converted to Catholicism when he married Adele Bouvier, Sarkozy's grandmother, who was a French Catholic. On the paternal side, he is descended from both Protestant and Catholic Hungarian aristocrats. His father was a member of the French Foreign Legion and trained at Sidi Bel Abbes. Whether this family background would have made him "Jewish enough for Hitler" is debatable. Had he been a German citizen, and had he been willing to serve the Reich, and had his services been needed, he would have been considered at the most a Mischling, and might even have been Aryanized. It may be that 150,000 Mischlinge served in the Wehrmacht during the Second World War, including Field Marshal and State Secretay of Aviation Erhard Alfred Richard Oskar Milch. In any event, you are right that the Jew-haters will denounce Sarkozy as a Jew. But then again, the Jew-haters will denounce anybody as a Jew.

But not until Sarkozy says something about problems France faces other than "global warming," will I believe that the French are gathering themselves to resist the jihad.

The neo-cons are not a spent force.

You can find them in the Victory Caucus or the I Support Democracy In Iraq people.

Lots of other places. We are just getting up our second wind.

I can't wait for the Democrats denounce democracy for all.

By the way, I'm guessing you knew that already. I don't know why you would argue the point. So what if contingencies were granted some people.

pasto -

only people whose MOTHER was a Jewess are Jewish, unless they convert.

sarkozy had ONE GRANDFATHER (his mother's father)who was born Jewish, so he has 1/4 Jewish ANCESTRY, BUT HE ISN'T A JEW: not by religious practice and not by birth. NOT BY BIRTH.

There is NO JEWISH SECT which would say he is a Jew.

He doesn't say he is a Jew.

HE IS NOT A JEW.

PERIOD.

now people call Robert Spencer a Jew, and mean it in a bad way! That doesn't make it so.

same thing with Sarko.

Pasto,

There are a number of different issues here, and I think they are getting confused in our discussion, partly because I brought in some ancillary information which may not have helped.

Let's try to separate some different concerns here.

First of all, so far as I know, President Sarkozy is not a practicing Jew. He does not believe in the Jewish religion.

Secondly, President Sarkozy does not meet the definition of inherent or inherited Jewishness of any organized congregation of Jewish people. To the "Orthodox," any child of a Jewish mother is a Jew. To the "Reform" any child of a Jewish parent is a Jew. But a child with one Jewish grandparent is not accepted as a Jew by birth by any community of Jews, at least in the Western world, nor by the State of Israel.

Does Sarkozy identify with the Jewish people? It has been reported in the Jewish press that after his parents' divorce, he was raised by his mother and was very close to her father, who was born as a Jew, as I admit, to a well-known Jewish family from Salonika (Thessaloniki). He was apparently raised on tales of the Maquis, and the resistance against the German occupation.

Third, I concede that President Sarkozy will be denounced as a Jew by more than a few of his opponents. If he acts against the Jihad, he will be called a Zionist, a Jew, and so forth.

I'm not sure what you mean by contingencies. However, the example of Feldmarschall Milch shows that a Jew could be a trusted participant in the German military machine during the Third Reich, and could devote himself wholeheartedly to the German war effort.

In short, looking for Jewish ancestry as a way of reassuring ourselves that this or that politician will act sensibly let alone courageously to defend Western civilization shows how pathetic we have become.

Reliapundit's comment is very apropos.

Let me be clear, I am not saying that the fact that Sarkozy has Jewish ancestry is a sign that he is senseible, or that his ancestry will impact his decision-making. That's absurd and it's racist thinking.

What I am saying is that I agree with J.R. that the fact that the French voted for a President whose ancestors are Jewish says something positive about the French that I didn't expect to hear.

That's a good thing.

I understand who is a Jew and who isn't according to Jewish law.

That's fine.

My point was that, ethnically, he is, in part, a Sephardic Jew.

There is an ethnic component to being a Jew. That's a fact.
