Sergey Lavrov said Russia was worried by recent comments by US Vice President Dick Cheney in which he reaffirmed that "all options are on the table" to prevent Teheran from becoming a nuclear power. "We are concerned about the possibility of a military scenario," Lavrov was quoted as saying in government daily Rossiyskaya Gazeta. "We are observing a US military buildup in the Persian Gulf. Such a buildup of forces always threatens to trigger a military conflict, even by accident."
Russia has repeatedly spoken out against resorting to force to resolve the dispute over Iran's nuclear program, and has warned that overly harsh sanctions would be counterproductive.
WHICH LEAVES WHAT, EXACTLY!? A HARSHLY WORDED LETTER!? WEAK SANCTIONS!? IF WE TAKE THE MILITARY OPTION OFF THE TABLE, WHAT CHANCE IS THERE FOR THE UNSC TO ORDER MEANINGFUL SANCTIONS!? NONE.
IOW: THE INCREASED PRESENCE OF US MILITARY IN THE GULF SENDS TWO MESSAGES: ONE TO IRAN, AND ANOTHER TO RUSSIA AND CHINA AND FRANCE; THE MESSAGE: WE MEAN BUSINESS.
EITHER THEY VOTE HARSH SANCTIONS OR WE ATTACK. AND SOON.

BOTTOM-LINE: PUTIN IS NOT OUR ALLY. WE SHOULD TREAT HIM AS THE FOE HE IS.

Of course Putin isn't our ally. But its pretty hard to treat someone as a foe who's sitting on a nuclear arsenal that we're trying to help keep under control. He has the U.S. between a rock and a hard place and he's taking advantage of it. He's scum.
