CITY HAD ENOUGH BUSES TO EVACUATE AT LEAST 30,000 BEFORE HURRICANE STRUCK

ACE ASKS: IS IT Bush's Fault?

205 schoolbuses, owned and operated by the city of New Orleans (and not the federal government) sat idle asthe ocean swept into the city, and still sit in three foot deep water.

Did Karl Rove order the Mayor of New Orleans not to take the rather simple step of running those buses 24/7 to evacuate the poor (who supposedly didn't have enough money to leave)?More... And nevermind the additional 364 buses of the NO transportation system, which similarly sat in their parking lots while the levees broke.

Remind me again -- who's in charge of a city's transportation system?

Still More... Galveston, Texas had all of its available buses fueled and ready to roll should Katrina hit that city. Why didn't New Orleans!?

By my calculation, 564 buses could have taken AT LEAST 30,000 poor "personal transportation-less" people to safety on Saturday night when mandatory evacuation was ordered and BEFORE the storm struck on Sunday. If they made two trips they might have evacuated EVERYONE WHO HAD NO INDEPENDENT WAY TO EVACUATE! I blame Mayor Nagin and Governor Blanco, NOT FEMA or Bush.

jeff jenson i think u r nuts.
the operative part of your excerpt is:

"... for ensuring that emergency response professionals are prepared for any situation."

the primary response is by the NOLA mayor and LA guv.

even the nat' guard and the pentagon folks must all be cleared by guvs - and report to the guvs.

blanco and nagin proved to be inadgequate to their challneges.

as a result, the evacuation went BADLY.

EVERY sinlge person in NOLA could have been evacuated before Katrina hit. they had the authoirty and the means.

NOW.... i do agree that the respoisne from tues-fri SEEMED slow.

but we have no idea how tough it was for the 1st responders to operate in those conditions - meaning the WORST natural disaster OF ALL TIME.

90,000 sq miles dmagaed. highwasy and briodges and phoines and power out - that served MILLIONS of people.

100,000's of homes destroyed and isloated in floodwater.

2 milion displaced people.

i belive it is possible that mediocrity became incompetence because it was was exacerbated by the ENORMITY of the challenge.

there is NOTHING to the charge that the responbse was slow due to race, class, or regional bias. ZERO.

the region is VERY racially mixed and bipartisan.

the ONLY overwhelmingly black and poor segment which was mis-served was the folks who were not evacuated from NOLA and that was the fault of their black mayor.

he did not fail because he hates blacks.

he was simply overwhemlmed and fell down on the job SATURDAY - when he should have and could have used city buses to get ALL the poor "personal transportation-less" people out of the city.

these are the FACTS.

your commentys are unsubstantiated overemotional.

thanks for reading and commenting.

Pat Robertson a good friend of president Bush claimed for awhile that he can divert hurricanes, I bet he is responsible for Katrina as he is responsible for Rehnquist death, he was also praying for more opening in the Supreme Court. You have to be amazed at the power of God and especially of his favor minister Mr. Paterson that when he is not fighting hurricanes, helping the GOP to get more openings in the SCOTUS, he is calling for the assassination of Hugo Chavez, following Jesus example when he called his disciples to kill Caesar. Or didn't he? Republicans must be proud of their false prophets.

reliapundit will defend Bush even if he is caught giving a blow job to his horse in Crawford, Republicans have no principles or morals just blind allegiance to the party even if that means that Americans will die in foreign battle grounds or natural disasters, they simply don't care as long as they hold on to power.

you Leftie commenters (516am & 520am) are LAUGHABLY CRUDE IGNORANT IDIOTS.

#1 - I am a REGISTERED Democrat.
#2 - your bestial-blow-job comment proves you are immoral and have no principles.
#3 - I have been critical of Bush's spending and immigration policy and MANY other things.
#4 - I could easliy delete your comments, but they illustrate EVERYTING that is wrong with the current Democrat Party and the Left.

Bush's reaction is much worse than the local efforts to this disaster. I agree with Kayne West 100% that Bush does not care about black people, and I think that influenced the miserable failure that is Bush's response to this disaster.

First, Bush has never agreed to meet with the NAACP, and is the only President since Herbert Hoover in the 1920s that has been so insensitive to this organization for black people. He has nominated some extremely ideological conservative judges to federal district courts who have been hostile to civil rights and civil liberties such as:
a.) Terrence Boyle, 4th circuit court judge who ruled for whites and against blacks in two voting rights cases-reversed both times.
b.) Janice Rogers Brown, DC circuit court judge who voted to protect racist speech in the work place.
c.) D. Michael Fisher, 3rd circuit
court judge who voted to protect racist speech in the work place.
d.) William Pryor, 11th circuit court judge who voted to promote states’ rights over the rights of blacks who have been discriminated against.

Bush has also repeatedly passed tax cuts that mostly help his rich 1% upper class friends while at the same time he has cut social services to help the very poor. Bush’s much-touted No Child Left Behind Act is inadequately funded and does not address the soaring number of poor, under funded, racially segregated public schools nationally. The Bush administration also backed white students in their effort to torpedo the University of Michigan’s affirmative action program. Bush backed so called “race neutral alternatives” that cripple the fight for workplace diversity.

In short, Kanye West is 100% right when he says that Bush doesn’t care about black people. Maybe if Bush did care about minorities he would have responded more appropriately to this disaster rather than commenting on how much he hopes that Senator Lott's mansion would be rebuilt so that he could BBQ on the porch.

mike - thanks for the well-written comment; too bad it's all WRONG.

you have merely regurgitated left-wing nonsense which is totally unsupproted by the facts.

nagin - who is black - and the La. guv - who is a Democrat - bear MOST of the responsibility for the human tragedy. Not Bush. Or FEMA. And Bush is NO RACIST. Tha's justa racist smear.

ALL FEMA directives to ALL states state FLATLY that they cannot bring relief until after 72-96 hours after an emergency and to plan accordingly.

Louisiana and Nawlins were NOT prepared, and they also failed to properly exeute their OWN hurricane evacuation plans and shelter plans.

i have liked to several articles on this this - as have MAY others - you shoulduse the links and educate yourself on this matter.

you seem to be smart. I suggest you should un-tether yourserlf from left-wing propaganda.

if you do, you will see the light.
