MY WILLFUL "CULTURAL" BLINDESS - and the myth of the "global village"

I have never read a Harry Potter novel - or seen one Harry Potter Movie.

I have never seen a compete Seinfeld episode.

I have never heard a complete Elvis Costello song - or one by the Dave Matthews Band.

I have never watched an episode of Survivor, Amazing Race, Dancing with the Stars, or that remodeling show - whatever it's called. Or any "reality" TV show.

I have never watched a complete Olbermann show or Maddow Show or Ed Schultz Show.

I have never purchased a NEWSWEEK and though I may have bought one or two copies of TIME, haven't even touched one in over 15 years.

I don't own an IPOD or any APPLE product.

I haven't seen a complete SOPRANOS show either, come to think of it.

MY POINT?!

Many products the media elite hold up as essential, products that they chatter about each day are unknown or ignored by more people than not.

The average I LOVE LUCY episode had more viewers than the MOST watched SEINFELD episode.

The "culture" pushed by the mass media elites has never ever been less consumed.

What's interesting to me is that even though the media is more splintered than ever, the media elite still behave as if 90% of America listens to them, watches them and cares about them.

It just ain't so anymore.

More people bought tickets for GONE WITH THE WIND than that Cameron 3D anti-free enterprise commie eco-nutsie thing with blue creatures - which I didn't see --- nor care to see.

There is no Cronkite, no Lucille Ball, no Johnny Carson on TV. NO HOWDY DOODY.

There is no "global village" - not anymore.

The Internet and the vestigial leftiness of the media elites killed it.

More people may watch FOX than the other cable news outlets combined, but still: fewer watch FOX than watched Huntley and Brinkley.

This fragmentation - of media and culture - is one reason some parts of our political culture are fragmenting: the two big parties - like the media elites - no longer have a strangle hold on the attention of the public.

Hence the emergence of the citizen journalist and citizen politician and the end of the professional journalist and the professional politician.

To maintain power, the "pro's" need a media that can DICTATE the story of the day and the party lines.

The people need no such thing: the Tea Party movement proves that people's movements can swarm and coalesce within the new media, even a fragmented media because what unites these movements are transcendent values which forge new connection between otherwise disparate persons.

We don't live in a global village; we live in a world with the potential for a virtual issue-oriented and value-oriented coalitions of great and ever-burgeoning magnitudes.

And because of this, the potential for true human liberation has never been greater.

Statists, elitists, China, al Qaeda - tyrants & tyrannies of all forms - have never ever been more threatened than they are now.

They can't dictate the official narrative anymore.

We the people can vet them as never before. And ignore them.

They can push Harry Potter and AGW and Obama and deride FOX and teabaggers and Sarah Palin all they want.

It doesn't work anymore. It can't.

They're too easy to turn off, and it's too easy for us to unite.

How so. For all we know, Iran could be planning to launch their missiles of death against North American and Europe as well, and even against the far east, and there's no telling if even early warning systems and other defense mechanisms there will be able to stop them, and they don't think it's a problem? Steyn's right, it's very bad.

Breaking News: Israelis in Sinai advised to leave immediately

Travel warning issued by PM's office; information received suggests plans to kidnap Israelis vacationing in the area.

A travel warning was issued late Thursday by the Israeli Prime Minister's office, calling on Israelis in Sinai to leave and return to Israel straight away.

The warning quoted "reliable and current intelligence" about a kidnapping plot and called on "all Israelis in Sinai to leave immediately and return to Israel."

Citing credible intelligence, the Israeli Counter-Terror Bureau (CTB) sharpened its advisory against traveling to the Sinai Peninsula also on Thursday evening.

According to the bureau, Israeli intelligence agencies have received information regarding plans by the Army of Islam – a Palestinian terror group affiliated with al Qaida and based in the Gaza Strip – to kidnap Israelis currently vacationing in the Sinai.

Last week, the Israei Air Force – acting upon intelligence provided by the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) – bombed a car in which 27-year-old Mohammed Namnam, a top operative with the Army of Islam, was sitting. According to the Shin Bet, Namnam, from the Shati refugee camp, was responsible for a number of attacks against Israel in recent years.

The CTB said on Thursday that the assassination of Namnam was part of Israeli efforts to foil the Army of Islam’s plans.

On Wednesday, Time Magazine claimed that the intelligence on Namnam was provided to Israel by Egypt whose security forces recently rounded up a number of Army of Islam operatives in the Sinai.

Private screening of film about late PA chairman disrupted by Hamas police who arrest attendees, threaten to seize media equipment.

A Palestinian lawmaker on Thursday said that Hamas police broke up a private screening of a film about Yasser Arafat on the sixth anniversary of the late Palestinian Authority chairman.

Ashraf Jumma reported that police threatened to seize a screen and a VCR and arrested some of the more than two dozen attendees. Police also detained journalists, watched footage from the event and made them promise not to air it.

Hamas officials could not be reached for comment.

In the West Bank, Abbas addressed thousands of flag-waving supporters near Arafat's grave, calling for national unity.

On Monday Hamas announced its decision to ban Fatah supporters from holding a rally in the Gaza Strip to mark the anniversary of Yasser Arafat’s death.

Hamas has done this every year since taking control of the Gaza Strip in the summer of 2007.

"GRAPHIC NOVELIST" DIDN'T LIKE ISRAEL BEFORE, DOESN'T NOW EITHER

There's this very saddening item in recent news of an American Jew named Sarah Glidden who put together a graphic novel called "How to Understand Israel in 60 Days or Less", and it didn't surprise me that it reeks of hostility to the Jewish state, and a weird obsession with "palestinian" Arabs. In this Haaretz article (via Newsarama) about little miss Glidden, it may say she "stopped worrying" and "started loving Israel" but if this is any suggestion:

The author doesn't try to conceal her critical attitude toward Israel, but admits that she has developed an obsession about the country.

"I think there are a lot of American Jews who are similarly obsessed. Part of the reason, I think, is that if you are an American Jew, whether you are secular, Reform or Conservative, you are raised being told that Israel is your country too, and you can move there, and be a citizen, so it is a place that somehow is important to you. I always had this feeling that I have to have a relationship with Israel, and sometimes I didn't want to have this relationship, when I would hear the news and get upset, or people would be talking about Israel and I was wanting to defend it, and I would be ashamed about what the government there was doing, much in the way that I'm ashamed about the United States sometimes, when it does things I don't agree with."

When Glidden visits the Golan Heights in the book, she is shocked by the Zionist propaganda awaiting her in a visitors center there; she visits Kibbutz Degania and is angry that the stories of the pioneers' heroism ignore the Palestinian residents who were there before them; she is rescued by the skin of her teeth from the frightening crowds at the Purim parade in Holon ("Stereotype No. 142: Israelis love to push. Status: confirmed" ); and in Jaffa she is angry that the tour guide prefers to present the mixed city's history via entertaining tales, rather than by discussing difficult incidents in its past.

At the same time, however, Glidden is also surprised to discover that the Israeli guide is willing to answer tough questions too and to deal with criticism; indeed, she conducts conversations with Israelis that often surprise her. When she sees a group of soldiers up close, she is astonished to discover how young they are. And in the middle of the trip, in Tel Aviv, without advance warning, she has a sort of emotional breakdown.

"When I came here I wanted to receive confirmation of the fact that Israel is the bad guy in the story. I wanted to know that I could remove it from my life once and for all," her comic incarnation confesses in the book, under the monument built by sculptor Yigal Tumarkin in Rabin Square, to one of the Israelis accompanying the group. "But now I don't know any more. Suddenly I understand why Israel did some of the things it did. You're good people. At least some of you. Or maybe I'm simply getting brainwashed here, just as everyone warned me would happen!"

Okay, I think this is all we need to know that she tries...and fails to convince she's really on Israel's side, and doesn't buy into the libel that Britain if anyone started several decades ago. The problem is that it's just so jumbled and ambiguous, like the woman can't decide where she stands. If anything, I do think she's got a problem with moral equations.

(Notice how she doesn't mention Orthodox Judaism in her allusion to religious sects? Does that suggest she's got a problem with them, or even dislikes Hasidics?)

Here's another interview on Comics Alliance, and looking at it, it seems like she's repeatedly hinting that she wants the "palestinians" to be brought into focus (hence, her obsession), and thinks Israeli guides like Yad Vashem's are constantly leaving it out. Plus, there's this to consider:

...it was incredible, but that was the strongest example of actual propaganda and, you know, like Gil says, it is actually propaganda, because it was used during the '90s when Israel was considering giving back the Golan Heights. It was a movie made to make people reconsider that and turn against that idea. It was almost like a historical document of Israel in the '90s."

So she's in favor of giving it back to an enemy, Syria, with no respect for Israel? And I assume she doesn't support the Jewish bible and history either?

One more telling thing is a little revelation made by the Huffington Post Monitor blog, whose blogmaster also noticed what I did about young miss Glidden believing so strongly - or obsessively - in the palestianian narrative, yet that doesn't keep commentors on Arianna's site from coughing out hate.

And what does that tell us? That Glidden, clearly a leftist, has succeeded brilliantly in brewing up a masterpiece of moral equivalence. No need to bother about this tripe then. She's got to choose one side only, research more carefully what's right or wrong, and decide whether she supports Jewish identity or not. Otherwise, I don't think she's got a leg to stand upon. And her bizarre attitude is so galling, that's one more reason why I want nothing to do with her work.

One more thing worth noting from the article in leftist Haaretz:

"I thought there was no way DC Comics was going to be interested in someone like me. I'm a beginner; [I thought] they only publish comics about superheroes and fantasy. But I told him what it was all about and he bought a book and went away. Two days later, I got an e-mail saying that he was an editor at Vertigo publications [a division of DC specializing in comics for adults], and that they wanted to publish it. Only then did I realize that Vertigo does many things that are political. It was a dream come true."

Yeah, if you're a leftist. For this is also a company that's been making its politics clearer in recent years, and it's getting disgusting. That's why it's not really surprising that they've agreed to publish such a peculiar item.

Andrew Gilligan has a pretty eye-opening account of the infiltration of school inspectors with links to far Right Islamist organisations into the school inspectorate. I’m not going to summarise the article – it bears reading in full.One particular case is worth a little further comment:

Among the schools directly inspected by Ofsted was the Madani Girls’ School, a private Islamic school in London’s East End.

Its Ofsted report, written by Mrs Messaoudi, said it made pupils “aware of their future role as proactive young British Muslim women” and left them “well-prepared for life in a multicultural society”.

However, the Madani Girls’ School’s own website openly states: “If we oppose the lifestyle of the West, then it does not seem sensible that the teachers and the system which represents that lifestyle should educate our children.”

It says that under western education “our children will distance themselves from Islam until there is nothing left but their beautiful names”.
