Malmö dwellers forced to deliver their own mail 

”You do what you have to do, we have to solve it somehow. And we have no idea how it will work before we have tried, that's how I look at it,” Swedish Postal Service (Posten) district manager Rolf Weiffert to local paper Skånska Dagbladet.  

For months, Seved has been plagued by continuing problems. 

Threatened postal workers in the area were forced to carry panic alarms and many residents say they don't dare go out at night. 

From February 1st, two residents in the area will help authorities deliver mail to some 500 households in the area.  

The Posten and Malmö city will be co-operating on the project, which will begin as a 6 month trial project and focus on getting young people engaged in postal delivery, according to the newspaper. 

"I'm satisfied," Anders Malmquist, district manager with the city of Malmö, said. 

“Young adults get an insight and an understanding of how it is to work in the postal service."
The two young people who will deliver the letters are currently being recruited.  

They will be employed for 12 months by Jobb Malmö, a community project, and get introductory education by the postal system, followed by an internship and, the plan is, eventual employment as a postal worker. 

The municipality sees the venture mostly as a workforce project to steer the unemployed youth into work life, even if the idea itself stems from criminality and the lack of safety that has come to characterize the area. 

The postal service denied that there was a need for new postal worker recruitment, but stated that the there was a danger of the postal service coming to a halt. 

Since the police beefed up camera surveillance of the area in December, the number of incidents has decreased, but the district, which has 4,500 residents, has always had considerable social problems. 

Half of the population is between 19 and 44 with a majority of foreigners. 
Less than half of the adults have paid employment and the average income is low. 
Youth gangs have taken over parts of the town and are engaged in more or less open drug trafficking. In October, one postal vehicle was also subjected to an attempted robbery.

It seems that Obama is deliberately engineering USA/Israel rift: cancels military exercise

Israel and the United States have agreed to postpone a major joint military drill scheduled for spring, Israeli public radio reported on Sunday, saying budgetary constraints were behind the delay.  

 The radio, citing military sources, reported that the exercises, codenamed "Austere Challenge 12," would be pushed back to the end of 2012. Despite the postponement, there were no changes to a visit to Israel by top U.S. military chief General Martin Dempsey, scheduled to arrive later this week for meetings with Defence Minister Ehud Barak and Chief of Staff Benny Gantz. The postponed military exercises were to include thousands of American and Israeli soldiers in the largest missile defence manoeuvres ever held by the allies.

Quid Pro Quo: Qatar funds Muslims in France in Exchange for Assistance with Libya

Far-right presidential candidate Marine Le Pen on Friday lashed out at Qatar for investing in "Muslim" areas of French cities and for taking over Paris Saint-Germain football club. 

"The massive investments which it has made in suburbs are made because of the very high proportion of Muslims who are in the French suburbs," she told reporters. 

"I think this situation could be very dangerous," she said. "We are letting a foreign country choose its investments with regard to the religion of this or that part of the French population or of French territory."

The tiny but very wealthy Gulf state of Qatar late last year set up a 50-million-euro ($67-million) fund for entrepreneurs from France's often-deprived suburbs to set up businesses. 

Le Pen, who is just two percentage points behind French President Nicolas Sarkozy less than four months before the election here, also said that she was not happy with Qatar's takeover of Paris Saint-Germain last year.

"It does actually bother me that Qatar bought Paris Saint-Germain," she said.

Qatar's Crown Prince Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani is owner of the club through Qatar Sports Investments. 

Le Pen said that in general Qatar was "playing a double game" by presenting itself as an "enlightened" country while at the same time supporting Islamist groups in the Middle East and North Africa.

Gas-rich Qatar is a traditional French ally and provided vital Arab support to French and British-led efforts to get a UN mandate for military action to protect civilians during the eight-month uprising in Libya. 

Qatar provided military support to NATO-led operations in Libya, including deploying troops on the ground.

The new race row involving Ms Abbott comes two weeks after she was forced to apologise for saying ‘white people love to divide and rule’ following the trial of the killers of black teenager Stephen Lawrence.

Politics graduate Jade Knight, 25, told yesterday how she approached Ms Abbott about the chances of work after recognising her at a branch of Boots in London’s Piccadilly.

"I went downstairs and found Ms Abbott and said I hoped she didn’t mind me asking her, but if there was any kind of work I could do for her, I would love the opportunity.‘She said, “You’d be better off working for a white Conservative. You’re a black conservative, you don’t do the black thing.” I couldn’t believe she had said it. 

‘She was basically accusing me of selling out, which is not true. I told her being a conservative wasn’t going against my heritage. Anyone who understands black culture knows black culture can be very conservative. 

I thought she would understand that as she is educated.’ 

British-born Ms Knight, whose father is a Nigerian immigrant, went to school at a London comprehensive before gaining her degree. She is not a member of the Conservative Party but regards herself as a ‘social conservative’."...
She explained to Ms Abbott that she was a committed Christian and had become a conservative with a small ‘c’ after working with disadvantaged black and Hispanic children in America. 

‘Many were badly behaved and came from broken homes with no male figure and surrounded by crack addicts,’ she said. ‘I had lived for a while with an aunt and uncle in Georgia in America where most black parents were married and the kids were much better behaved. 

‘It convinced me that social conservatism, with its emphasis on family values, is right.

Ms Knight inherited her love of politics from her father, a lecturer in politics. ‘He made me watch Channel 4 News every day,’ she recalls. However, it did not lead her to embrace his support for Labour. She voted Lib Dem in the 2005 General Election and backed David Cameron in 2010.
