What are the Democratic Presidential candidates afraid of?
Anyway, my suggestion to Dean is, and this is only offered because I know it will never get back to him, instead of barring the press, he ought to try taking the press down to the bar.
That they love, or so I hear.
The head of the Democratic Party said Wednesday that the best way to get presidential candidates to talk frankly about issues is to lock out the media.What an idiot Dean is. Doesn't he think before he opens his mouth? I love the guy. He's good for our side.
During the Mortgage Bankers Association conference, a banker expressed frustration with candidates who only talk in sound bites and wondered how that could be changed. Howard Dean, once a presidential candidate, offered a simple solution.
"I suggest you have candidates in to meetings like this and bar the press," Dean said.

A RETIRED policeman is going blind – because a Yorkshire health trust will not pay for treatment that could save his sight. Leslie Howard, also an ex-Royal Military policeman and former prison officer, suffers from a degenerative eye condition. The drugs needed to save his sight are available on the NHS in other parts of the country.IF TAX-FINANCED/STATE-RUN "UNIVERSAL HEALTHCARE" SUCKS THERE, THEN IT MAKES NO SENSE TO DO IT HERE - YET THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT ALL OF THE DEMOCRAT CANDIDATES FOR THE PRESIDENCY ARE ADVOCATING.
But Mr Howard, 76, has been told by health chiefs not to expect a penny of NHS treatment until he goes blind in one eye and starts losing sight in the other.
He fears that after a lifetime of public service the decision by North Yorkshire and York Primary Care Trust could plunge him into total blindness and leave him and his invalid wife Mary Ann, 70, housebound.
As his case led to a new row over NHS "health rationing", Mr Howard, of Acomb, York, said: "The problem is we have lived too long and are just pieces of meat now – a nuisance.
"I was advised to go private but was quoted £1,000 an injection for who knows how many injections. I can't afford that kind of money. I've paid tens of thousands of pounds in taxes and to know that I will now lose my sight because I can't afford private treatment is diabolical."

Dear Senator;
You ran and won re-election on an independent line because you lost the Democrat Party nomination in the primary to an "anti-war", MoveOn-type Leftist - Ned Lamont.
Your decision to run as an independent proves that you can put principle ahead of party affiliation.
And, your decision proves that you believe the War against Global Jihad - and the campaign in Iraq - is more important than party affiliation.
Nevertheless, after being sworn in for another term you decided to caucus with the Democrats. I understand this very well: I am a lifelong Democrat who first registered as a Democrat in 1974. Even though I voted for Bush in 2004, and now find that I have much more in common with the GOP platform than with the Democrat Party platform, I still haven't changed my party affiliation from Democrat to Independent or Republican. It doesn't really matter if I do or don't.
But it does matter who you caucus with.
The Senate Democrat Caucus is now entirely dominated by the same "anti-war", MoveOn-type crowd who turned on you before the last election; they turned on you despite the fact that you have been a stalwart liberal Democrat for decades, and the Vice Presidential candidate in 2000.
So... First of all, you owe this "anti-war" MoveOn-type crowd nothing. Second of all, your candidacy and election victory proves that you and your constituents believe that there are more important and valuable things about you than which party you caucus with.
Therefore, if you truly believe that the War we are now in is the most important issue, and if you believe that the current Senate Democrat Party leadership is undermining our efforts in this war, then you have a duty to stop caucusing with these Democrats, and start caucusing with the Senate GOP.
If you were to do this, then Senator Harry Reid and his comrades in the "anti-war" defeatist wing, which now controls the party, would be relegated to the minority of the Senate, and then they wouldn't be able to damage our efforts in the war.
Simply by caucusing with the Senate GOP, you can do more to aid the war effort - and help us to victory - than any Senator. Please do this.
Victory in the war is more important than which party you caucus with.

BISHARA SUSPECTED OF COLLABORATING WITH HEZBOLLAH
Azmi Bishara, who phoned in his resignation from the Knesset recently, is suspected of aiding the Hezbollah:
Azmi Bishara is suspected of having aided Israel's enemies during the Second Lebanon War.Frankly, I doubt he'll return so soon, since an arrest warrant could be issued for him. He's also sent someone to gather the rest of his belongings, and if he hasn't left anything behind, then it's unlikely he'll be back, if at all. He certainly shouldn't be allowed any benefits as an erstwhile Knesset member, and steps should be taken to bar him from even that.
The information came to light after the Petah Tikva Magistrate's Court partially lifted the gag order that was imposed on the case since Bishara left Israel.
Bishara is suspected of transferring information to Hizbullah during the war, of maintaining contacts with a foreign agent, and of money laundering.

Recently Bishara tendered his resignation from the Knesset, but as a former MK he continues to hold many of the privileges of an elected official - a situation that the State of Israel cannot accept, MKs said on Tuesday.
MKs from the right-wing parties were discussing ways to revoke some of Bishara's pension privileges, including the more than NIS 72,000-a-year pension that he will receive for the next decade for his years of Knesset service. The MKs, who asked to remain anonymous, said that they were planning to file a complaint against Bishara in the Ethics Committee.
"How can we accept a situation in which this man dishonors the state and yet we continue to pay him, like freierim [suckers], and give him all his privileges?" said one MK.
Bishara was last known to be in Egypt, but even his colleagues in Balad said they did not know his current whereabouts.
If Bishara were to move to Syria, one of the countries that he is rumored to be considering for residence, the MKs said that there should be a legal way to stop funds from reaching him.
Bishara, meanwhile, has promised that he will return to Israel to confront the charges being leveled against him. There is a court-imposed gag order that prohibits the publication of suspicions against him or details of the police investigation.
ISRAEL'S STATE COMPTROLLER RELEASES INFO ON OLMERT'S CORRUPTION
And now, Ehud Olmert has just been confronted with very hard, serious charges of corruption:
State Comptroller Micha Lindenstrauss on Wednesday informed the attorney-general that Prime Minister Ehud Olmert may have been guilty of criminal behavior by taking an active part in an Investment Center decision to provide a $10 million grant to a company represented by his close friend, former partner and personal lawyer, Uriel Messer.Lindestrauss has already recommended that the attorney-general open a criminal investigation into Olmert's crooked deeds, and in the Labor party, calls have been coming out for the party to leave the government. Olmert's had this coming to him for a long time already, and it's richly deserved. This may be the beginning of the end for his political career.
The letter to Attorney-General Menahem Mazuz came in the wake of a 30-page report released on the same day entitled "Conflict of Interests on the Part of the Minister of Commerce and Industry." The decision to provide the grant to the company represented by Messer was made under the previous government, when Olmert served as minister of commerce and industry. [...]
According to Lindenstrauss, Silicat Industries Inc. applied to the Investment Center in October 2001 for status as an "approved industry," which would enable it to obtain government money to build a Silicat-producing factory in Dimona, at a total investment cost of $48 million.
The file was not discussed until the second half of 2003, when Olmert was already serving as Minister of Commerce and Industry under Prime Minister Ariel Sharon. Within less than six months, the Investment Center granted the approval.
During the negotiations with the Investment Center, Messer represented the company. On July 10, 2003, Olmert hosted a meeting on the company's application in his office.
"Olmert should not have participated in the meeting or intervened in the discussion because of the conflict of interests he was involved in," wrote Lindenstrauss. "This conflict of interests stemmed from the fact that between the company's representative, who asked for benefits from the Investment Center which the minister was in charge of, and Olmert, there had previously been economic ties and there continued to be ties of friendship and a lawyer-client relationship."
The following month, Olmert visited Dimona. During the visit, he reduced the amount of the guarantee the company was to deposit with the government from $15 to $5 million dollars. Olmert also knocked $1 million after the $7.5 million sum the company would have had to pay for infrastructure development, and then reduced it by another $4 million in return for the company's undertaking to develop the land itself.
Lindenstrauss wrote that Olmert's decision to reduce the guarantee by $10 million was "a substantial benefit to a particular entrepreneur, which reduced the guarantees the investors were supposed to provide, thereby increasing the government's risk in investing in the company."
The Investment Center granted the status of an "approved industry" without first seeing to it that the company fulfilled all the conditions that the professional echelon had laid down. Lindenstrauss also charged that Olmert and his aides, Ovad Yehezkel and Doron Shofen, intervened even after the Investment Center granted the company approved status.
IQ COMPLEXITIES
There is a press report here which says rather gleefully that higher IQ is linked to higher earnings but not to higher wealth. The actual journal abstract from which the press report is derived is much more interesting, however so here it is:
"How important is intelligence to financial success? Using the NLSY79, which tracks a large group of young U.S. baby boomers, this research shows that each point increase in IQ test scores raises income by between $234 and $616 per year after holding a variety of factors constant. Regression results suggest no statistically distinguishable relationship between IQ scores and wealth. Financial distress, such as problems paying bills, going bankrupt or reaching credit card limits, is related to IQ scores not linearly but instead in a quadratic relationship. This means higher IQ scores sometimes increase the probability of being in financial difficulty.
So high IQ people spend their extra loot rather than saving it and risk it rather than protect it. Maybe that is smart. It could mean that people who are both smart and well-off are an important source of those risk-taking entrepreneurs we all need to create new businesses and new jobs.
I have had a quick look at the full journal article (kindly sent to me by Prof. Zagorsky) and the data do appear to be of unusually high quality so I think these findings can be relied on. It may be worth noting that the relationship between IQ and income has often been found previously.

Kevin William Ridenour and Nicholas Edward Craig pleaded guilty to felony interference with the housing rights of an African priest because of their hatred of black people. Ridenour and Craig admitted burning a large wooden cross early on March 23 on the street in front of the driveway of a rectory attached to Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church in Westwood. The rectory, which is less than half a block from where the pair resided, is occupied by the Rev. Bernardin Mugabowakigeri, a native of Rwanda. In written plea documents, Assistant U.S. Attorney Benjamin Wagner agreed to recommend two years in prison for Ridenour, 21, and 21 months for Craig, 18, when they are sentenced July 2."

ONE-ARMED BOMB MANUFACTURER WAS CAPTURED IN KANDAHAR
Weird, you say? But apparently, it's true, Canadian troops in Afghanistan captured a one-armed terrorist described as the "mad bomber":
ZHARI DISTRICT, afghanistan–The mad bomber has one arm.It doesn't take much to tell that the mad bomber must've had his arm blown off during one of his manufactuing jobs. It's just too bad that the whole of him didn't go with it, or the troops would've had one less fiend to deal with in the nightmare that is Afghanistan.
Which suggests he's committed at least a single painful miscalculation in his life as an explosives alchemist.
And yet, even one-handed, he had been making life miserable for Canadian troops in this grim western corner of Kandahar province, his handiwork a constant threat and sometimes terror.
When he got it right. When the planets and fates aligned. When a military vehicle crunched its thick wheels over one of his roadside specials or the stride of a combat boot made dreadful contact with just that tiny piece of Ground Zero, death-in-a-canister.
The bomber isn't really so mad. As an expert in improvised explosive devices, he was quite the abominable genius, dexterous with just five fingers.
His craftsmanship was readily recognizable for those who knew what they were looking at.

BILL MOYERS' BS TO AIR ON PBS
Guess what your tax payer dollars are paying for? Bill Moyers to have supposedly "objective" documentaries on PBS. After a 2 year absence Moyers (who can't get hired by anyone else) is taking our tax money to air a propaganda, hit piece on Fox News and Conservative talk show hosts entitled, BUYING THE WAR tonight.Bill O'Reilly and Sean Hannity both talked about it on their shows last night. Bill O'Reilly especially showed that Moyers has some serious problems telling the truth. A Fox News producer questioned Moyers about things he has said and Moyers denied it all. O'Reilly then played the tapes of the interviews where Moyers said exactly what the producer asked him about. Moyers has been repeatedly asked to come on O'Reilly's show and he refuses to do so.
The documentary to air tonight is filled with propaganda aimed at doing nothing more than trashing people that he disagrees with ideologically. Bill Moyers is a left wing whacko and I resent the fact that PBS is paying him to do hit pieces on his enemies. Yet another reason our hard earned tax money shouldn't go to fund anything done by PBS.

U.S. Sen. Barack Obama said Monday he accepted campaign contributions from Antoin "Tony'' Rezko without knowing that Rezko was a slumlord with problem buildings in the state Senate district Obama represented at the time.OBAMA IS OBVIOUSLY LYING.
"Should I have known these buildings were in a state of disrepair? My answer would be that it wasn't brought to my attention,'' Obama, who's seeking the Democratic presidential nomination, said at a South Side campaign stop.
His comments came in response to a Chicago Sun-Times report that he had done previously undisclosed legal work between 1995 and 1998 on a series of troubled low-income-housing deals involving Rezmar Corp., owned by the indicted businessman.
Obama worked for a small Chicago law firm -- Davis Miner Barnhill & Galland -- between 1993 and 2004. The firm worked on deals that got $43 million in government funds for 15 apartment buildings Rezmar rehabilitated with not-for-profit community groups. Four of the buildings ended up being foreclosed on.

BUSH SAYS TALKS WITH IRAN POSSIBLE
In yet another betrayal of those who elected him to be a strong leader, George Bush is going back on his word again:
I am really done with George Bush. For God's sake, Hilary looks almost good at this point.
President Bush said Tuesday that Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice might have one-on-one talks with Iranian leaders at an international conference on Iraq next month, but that Tehran's nuclear program would not be on the table. In an interview, Bush initially appeared to rule out any contact with Iran, a member of his "axis of evil."Sorry if it sounds like I'm lacking in an ability for nuanced thinking, but I don't understand how the U.S. could benefit from having talks with a nation whose stated foreign policy is "Death to America."So, what are we going to talk about? The purpose of talking is negotiation and compromise. But, death is an absolute, so there is no compromise involved. Half of death is still death.
"What I'm not willing to do is sit down bilaterally with the Iranians," he told PBS' "The Charlie Rose Show." Later, he said Rice and Iran's foreign minister might have bilateral conversations at the conference. "They could. They could," Bush said.
The United States cut diplomatic ties with Iran following the 1979 storming of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran. Although there have been periodic diplomatic contacts, the Bush administration has resisted pressure at home and abroad to engage Iran one-on-one in an effort to improve security in neighboring Iraq.
That policy began to change this spring. Although it is not inviting a broad conversation, the administration has repeatedly said it will not rule out sideline talks with either Iran or Syria at the conference May 3-4 at Egypt's Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheik. Such contact would follow the model established last month when lower-level State Department officials had cordial discussions with Iranian and Syrian diplomats.
America cannot negotiate over its own death, unless our purpose is to set up a trust, I guess.
Of course, many would say, the purpose of the May 3-4 conference in Egypt would be to discuss Iranian policy vis a vis Iraq. But, it is my contention that, as Iran has made it clear that its primary goal is the elimination of the Great Satan, then we must assume that Iran's policy with regards to Iraq would be in accordance with it "Death to America" foreign policy goals.
Now, it is true that a nation can only be hurt in those areas in which it has an interest. They call it a "sodium" deficiency below to pull the wool over your eyes. But it is ordinary table salt they are talking about -- the stuff that has recently been heavily (and fraudulently) demonized. It's just too embarassing to mention what it really is. Mr Rogers, of Milton Keynes, was one of 70 runners taken to hospital in sweltering temperatures. Running his first marathon, he collapsed after completing the race in 3 hours and 50 minutes.....

Among them was the athlete widely tipped to win the men's race, Haile Gebrselassie, of Ethiopia, who stopped after about 19 miles. Matt Dawson, the England rugby player, described seeing runners pass out in front of him, while Gordon Ramsay, the celebrity chef, who was running his eighth marathon, said: "It was like running in a desert. People were dropping like flies." St John Ambulance said that it treated 5,054 people.

And then... like I said at the top... I'm really beginning to think that the blacks in the USA have become as hyper-sensitive as the Muslims - who riot over cartoons.
Muslims who expend more energy to condemn cartoons than beheadings send a very powerful message: they tell us that they're inimical to our civilization, dangerous and not to be trusted.
Blacks who expend more energy blaming an over-the-hill white DJ for saying something that gets repeated ad nauseum in the most popular part of their contemporary culture tell us something too.
It tells us that they are in deep denial about how self-destructive their pop sub-culture has become. Blair spoke about this a few weeks back and the blacks in the UK were livid. IOW: they're in denial there, too.
Muslims largely live in a world of their own making: it's impoverished and degrading because of their choices. It is NOT the West's fault or Christianity's fault or Israel's fault. MUSLIMS SHOULD LOOK WITHIN.
And if American blacks don't like terms like "nappy headed whores", then they should look within in, too.
The major reason each group doesn't is ideological and psychological: Islam tells Muslims that they alone have the perfect way, and that all others are inferior and deserve servitude. Islam tells Muslims that their problems are the result of cultural corruption and hegemony from the West.
Well, Afghanistan turned further away from the West - in deeper into fundamentalist Islam - than any other Muslim nation. And it was a freakin' hell-hole as a direct result. IT WAS NOT BECAUSE OF ISRAEL OR DUE TO THE ISRAEL LOBBY. IT WAS RADICAL ISLAM WHAT DONE IT.
But the Muslims still blame us.
Likewise, if many blacks continue to remain on the outside of power-structures in the USA, it's because they perpetuate their own self-alienation by empowering a degrading sub-culture. (Bill Cosby has said this, too.)
These sub-cultures have a powerful enabler: Postmodern Leftism - which hates the West and LOVES VICTIMHOOD - has empowered the most negative sub-cultures in Islam and the American black community by promoting idea that the path to a better life will come through demolishing and punishing the Judeo-Christian West and free markets, capitalism, industrialism, and globalization, (despite the fact that these things have actually done more to improve living standards that anything else in all of human history).
The truth is hard for Muslims and Leftist and rappin'/hip-hoppin Sharptonesque blacks to accept: they are the source of most of their own problems. It's easier to blame infidels, neocons, and white racists.
I think black self-degradation is a more negative drag on black achievement than white racism.
AND LET ME MAKE THIS CLEAR: blacks have achieved an ENORMOUS amount in many MANY fields since integration. Most of the blacks who have achieved great things have done so within the system, without playing the victim-card. Their achievement is to be admired. They should be leading the effort to rid the black community of blacks who degrade blacks. There are signs they are beginning to do this. I hope it continues.
AND ANOTHER THING: without blacks there would be NO CONTEMPORARY AMERICAN CULTURE. The contribution of blacks to every art, business, sport and industry have been ENORMOUS. There is NO reason for them to be whining or playing the victim. There is EVERY reason for them to be PROUD.

"I didn't commit any crime. This sentence is to shut me up and to stop the effort to expose human rights violations in Syria," he said, according to Reuters.

GOING TO WAR WITH IRAN COULD GET THE SILENT TO SPEAK UP
A former Israeli general, Yossi Cooperwasser, has the following argument in the NY Sun about going to war with Iran:
But does Cooperwasser have a point about getting anyone in Iran with common sense to step out of the shadows and speak up? Maybe.
JERUSALEM — A military strike against Iran could empower that country's democratic forces.I wouldn't go that far regarding the House of Saud. They still won't allow Jews to enter their country, and they still harbor and fund terrorists.
So says a retired general who headed Israel's military intelligence research division, Yossi Cooperwasser. An attack on Iran "may cause people in Iran who today are silent to act," General Cooperwasser, who spoke alongside other authorities on Israel during a visit of Western journalists to Israel sponsored by the American Israel Education Fund, said. "If the situation changes and the world intervenes forcibly, they might go to the state and say, ‘What are you doing?'"
General Cooperwasser's remarks by no means reflected the consensus of the group. Some officials expressed optimism about the recent Saudi overture to Israel — which might, in theory, help to isolate Iran — while others voiced hope about the prospects for success of economic sanctions against the Islamic Republic.
But does Cooperwasser have a point about getting anyone in Iran with common sense to step out of the shadows and speak up? Maybe.

"The only good thing about the nuclear issue is that it seems it has brought so much pressure on this government that this might be the end of them," said Shahla, 38, standing with bags of spring onions, radishes and tomatoes outside a greengrocer's near Ahmadinejad's old house in the eastern Tehran district of Narmak. She did not buy the cucumbers she wanted because they cost too much.
"People are struggling to survive," she said. "My children should be eating fruit, but it's too expensive." A woman in a black chador, the dress of the ultra-conservative, stopped to listen. In the old days she would have been one of the unofficial guardians of the revolution and would have stopped the conversation. Instead, she chimed in. "The people's blood is boiling," she said, introducing herself as Miriam, an employee of the education department. "But we are strangled, we cannot speak."
These are the people who voted Ahmadinejad into power and they are furious that their salaries remain pitifully low while the price of food rises at a rate unofficially estimated at between 20% and 40%.

How awful it would be if people got enough info to actually identify a wanted felon! Fortunately, the police concerned are apparently going to continue with their policy.
It's so much easier in the USA. If no racial description is given, you assume the perp is black -- unless he has an Hispanic name, of course.

"NSW police use the description "Middle Eastern" too frequently in media releases, skewing the perception of crime rates and contributing to racial tensions, a report says. The service constantly ignores its policy on the use of ethnic descriptions and has even issued releases referring to suspects wearing balaclavas as being of Mediterranean or Middle Eastern appearance, the report by the Australia Middle East Christian Council found.
The report said up to two-thirds of the police media releases that mentioned ethnicity referred to suspects of Mediterranean or Middle Eastern appearance. This was a disproportionate use, said Peter El Khouri, a member of the council and former Liberal Party candidate. "There is a perception that the Middle Eastern community, Australians of Middle Eastern background, are significantly responsible for crime in the state," said Mr El Khouri, who is of Lebanese descent.
