More than 30,000 hospital beds have been lost since Labour came to power, with record cuts in NHS wards last year.

The Department of Health claims bed numbers have fallen because hospitals are more efficient, with patients staying for shorter periods

The cutbacks mean increasing numbers of hospitals are going on "black alert" – which involves closing their doors to new patients because they are full.

Patients' groups described the loss of the beds, at a time when overcrowded wards have seen soaring rates of killer infections, as "a national scandal".

The reduction contradicts a pledge from Tony Blair at the turn of the century that there would be 7,000 more NHS beds by 2010. New figures, seen by The Telegraph, show that the number of health service beds fell more than 8,000 last year, as the NHS began a reorganisation process which will mean the closure of dozens of hospitals.

More than 40 per cent of maternity units turned away women in labour last year because they had no room.

Meanwhile, ambulances have been forced to queue outside overstretched hospitals, treating patients in car parks just yards from accident and emergency departments. The new statistics, revealed in response to a parliamentary question by Ed Vaizey, the Conservative MP, show that almost 32,000 NHS hospital beds went between 1997, when Labour took office, and 2007.

HEALTH chiefs will spend NHS money flying Midland patients to India for treatment under shock plans to cut waiting lists.

One senior British doctor told the Sunday Mercury that it was "common sense" to send NHS patients to the sub-continent for surgery.

Nearly 500 senior NHS doctors have spent the past week enjoying a taxpayer-funded break at one of the world's most exclusive ski resorts at a cost of up to £400,000.

The specialists – many of them key workers including anaesthetists, radiologists and urologists – attended a seminar every morning and evening and spent the rest of their days enjoying the well-groomed pistes and stunning Alpine views.

They are each allowed to charge hundreds of pounds of expenses to NHS Trusts on the grounds that the trip “continued their medical education”.

Few would disagree with the verdict of Lord Winston that the use of contaminated blood in transfusions and blood products was "the worst treatment disaster in the history of the NHS".

Thousands of people in the UK, including an estimated 4000 in Scotland, were given contaminated blood in the 1970s and 1980s.

As a result, many, including more than 2000 haemophiliacs in the UK, have since died from either hepatitis C or HIV, and there is a fear that others remain undiagnosed.

Campaigners for a public inquiry into what went wrong have argued for many years that if this scale of carnage had occurred in an accident, there would have been a full-scale public inquiry long ago.

That did not happen because this was a systemic failure which took place more slowly in a series of personal tragedies to individuals.

Our members tell us that the gaps in service are basic. There aren't enough midwives or beds, and they hate that they don't have time to give the care and reassurance they want to provide for expectant mothers. They are reinforcing the review's findings of a "failure to recruit enough midwives for one-to-one care during labour".

We feel that maternity services are now at breaking point.

Given the staffing shortfalls, we need real figures underpinned by the demographic changes facing this country - rising birth rates and the retirement of baby-boomer midwives - if the government is to honour its guarantees for maternity care.

More than seven million patients have been unable to see an NHS dentist for almost two years.

Most of those denied access have paid for private care instead, says Citizens Advice.

The Government is not doing enough to tackle waiting lists, according to the think tank

Almost 400,000 patients are still waiting more than a year for NHS treatment, a think tank claimed today.

Government figures showed a rise in the number of patients being admitted for treatment within the 18-week target from referral.The latest figures, for October 2007, showed 60 per cent were treated in that timeframe, up from 57 per cent the previous month.

But right-wing think-tank Civitas warned the figures were concealing a high number forced to wait far longer.

It said 713,513 (or 18 per cent) of patients needing elective treatment were waiting longer than 36 weeks, with 387,152 (10 per cent) of those having waited over a year.

Mothers and babies are being put at risk in NHS hospitals because midwives are so overstretched, shocking new figures show.

Midwives are being forced to oversee more births than they were six years ago, meaning they can not give women the support they need to ensure they stay safe.

In some parts of the country midwives are in charge of 25 per cent more births as they were in 2001, according to the official figures obtained by the Liberal Democrats.

The average midwife is now overseeing 33 births a year - well in excess of the guidelines which state they should deal with no more than 28 births.

Cancer patients fight to stop NHS withholding care

CANCER patients have launched a legal action to prevent the NHS from withdrawing care if they seek to improve their chances of recovery by paying privately for an additional drug.

The patients say the NHS will be breaching their human rights if it withdraws the treatment they are receiving.

Two of the patients, Colette Mills, 58, a former nurse from near Stokesley, North Yorkshire, and Debbie Hirst, 56, from St Ives, Cornwall, who both have breast cancer, have been told they will be made to foot the entire £10,000 monthly bill for their care if they attempt to pay privately for an additional drug, Avastin.

Ministers claim that to allow patients to pay for top-up drugs would be unfair to those who cannot afford them and lead to a two-tier NHS. The health department has issued guidance to NHS trusts warning that such co-payments are not allowed.

Gordon Brown admits that the purpose of the NHS is to take care of itself:

I believe these are steps vital to securing the health of the NHS for the next sixty years.

He is proposing far-reaching changes in the way health care is provided, in order to secure the health of the NHS.

Patients could be required to stop smoking, take exercise or lose weight before they can be treated on the National Health Service, Gordon Brown has suggested.

The NHS will be used as another tool to control private behavior. Excuses will be made so that services will not need to be provided at all.

Already this year, it has been reported that malnourished patients are being allowed to starve on NHS wards. The Conservative shadow Health Minister Stephen O'Brien noted:

"It is a scandal that in 21st-century Britain, we allow vulnerable patients to be let out of hospital in a malnourished state, and it is even worse that we allow thousands of patients to get more poorly while they are in hospital."

Scores of premature babies may be dying unnecessarily across England because the NHS mismanaged a reform of neonatal units in 2003, parliament's spending watchdog reveals today.

Health ministers provided £73m over three years to link up hospital neonatal units in 23 regional networks that could provide specialist services to save premature and low birth weight babies.

But the National Audit Office finds that the Department of Health did not issue instructions for the units to be adequately staffed.

As a result the service was overstretched. Its specialist nursing workforce was nearly 10% below strength.

There were not enough cots to respond to every emergency and there was a lack of specialist 24-hour transport to move babies and mothers to other hospitals.

CHANNEL 4/UK: Woman 'too fat' for op goes abroad

A British woman branded too fat for surgery on the NHS has undergone a second hip replacement operation in Malta.

Frances Kinley-Manton needed the operation due to arthritis pain in her hips, which kept her in a wheelchair for two years.

But NHS doctors told the 15-stone woman she would have to lose about two stone before she could be considered for surgery.

Mrs Kinley-Manton, from Palnackie near Castle Douglas, Dumfries and Galloway, was not able to lose weight through dieting and was forced to travel abroad for treatment. She took out a mortgage on her house to pay around £7,000 for a private left-hip replacement operation at a hospital in Malta in July.

She has now gone under the knife again at St James Hospital in Sliema on Malta to have the other hip replaced.

She said: "I had no alternative. NHS said they wouldn't operate on me because I'm overweight, but I think they were just trying to keep their costs down. They wouldn't even put me on a waiting list. It goes against my principles to have come to Malta, but I didn't think the surgery was ever going to happen in the UK."

The first operation was a success and she was walking more and less dependent on her wheelchair. The treatment made such a difference that she decided to go ahead with an operation to replace her right hip, which was also painful.
